It marked the first time the Owls have had multiple players earn C-USA All-Conference honors since 2011, when Jessica Kuster (first team) and Morgan Mayse (third team) were selected. 20/20 Club The Owls secured their second straight 20+ win season, marking the first time Rice accomplished the feat since the / seasons. The program record for wins in a season is 24, set by the team. From Way Downtown, Bang! The Owls lead all of C-USA in three-pointers made per game (8.3) and rank second overall with 264 made three-pointers. Rice has eclipsed last year s school record of 242 made trifectas. On the flipside, Rice has the number one three-point defense in all of C-USA, allowing opponents to make just 28.4 percent from beyond the arc. Fighting Through Adversity The Owls success this season is even more impressive considering the amount of injuries they ve had to fight through. Rice has lost four players for the season due to a variety of injuries, all four of whom were significant rotation players who played in the post. Shani Rainey, Temi Alao, Kendall Ellig and Olivia Ogwumike have combined to miss 102 games this season. On top of that freshman guard Sydne Wiggins was forced to miss the entire non-conference portion of the schedule with a foot injury. Doing It With Defense The Owls had the number two scoring defense during C-USA play, allowing just 55.9 points per contest. Rice had held 21 opponents below 60 points and has an 20-1 record when doing so. Holding on to the Lead Rice is a perfect 19-0 this season when they enter the locker room with a halftime advantage. Staying Out of Harms Way Because of a short rotation, it s even more imperative that the Owls stay out of foul trouble. Rice leads all of C-USA and ranks 19th in the country in fewest fouls, committing just 438 this season. The Owls 13.7 fouls per game is the best rate in C-USA and 14th in the nation. Winning with The Owls are 19-1 this season when they win the battle of the boards and just and just 5-8 when either trailing or tied in the category. Ogwumike Earns Academic Accolades Redshirt sophomore guard Erica Ogwumike was been named to both the C-USA All-Academic Team, as well as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District Women s Basketball Second Team. Ogwumike became the fourth Owl in school history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District accolades and the first since Lindsey Maynard in Ogwumike has maintained a 3.86 cumulative grade point average and is a double-major in Kinesiology and Policy Studies. Ogwumike ranks 5th in C-USA in scoring (17.2 ppg), 2nd in rebounding (9.3 rpg) and 7th in steals (2.0 spg). Owls Picked to Finish 5th Rice was picked to place fifth in the Preseason C-USA Women s Basketball Poll. A Year to Remember Last season was a banner year for the Owls in numerous ways. Rice s 11-game improvement was tied for the sixth-best in the nation, going from a 9-22 record in to a mark last year. The Owls put an exclamation mark on the year by winning the Women s Basketball Invitational title, the team s first-ever postseason title outside a conference tournament. 2
