OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE WOMEN S BASKETBALL QUICK FACTS ON THE MEND: Eastern Shore should see the return to the court of Preseason All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Third-Team selection Keyera Eaton today. Sophomore Ksenia Popovich is also available to play tonight for the first time this season. However, the Hawks are now without graduate transfer Jordyn Smith who gutted her way through an ankle injury to finish the game at George Mason, but isn t ready to return yet. The Hawks also recently lost sophomore Dayona Godwin to and injury as well. Junior Ciani Byrum also still has not played since 12 games into the season when she injured her knee at North Carolina A&T State. MAKING THEIR PRESENCE KNOWN: Despite bringing in seven new faces this season, Hawks head coach Fred Batchelor couldn t be sure exactly how much the newcomers would contribute. But, so far, the results have been pretty good. Freshman Bairesha Gill-Miles is averaging 9.8 points and 5.8 rebounds (and leads the team in both categories). Freshman Amanda Carney is tied for the team lead with eight made 3-pointers this season. Classmate Porsha Sydnor is seocnd on the team with 20 assists over six games this season. THE CAVALRY: In addition to the eight returners and four freshmen, The Shore welcomes in two graduate transfers and a junior college pickup. Forward Jordyn Smith (Towson) and guard Martha Thompson (Xavier) both found themselves in the Hawks opening day starting lineup. Forward Dominique Walker (Harford C.C.) is looking to make a contribution off the bench. So far, Smith has made the biggest impact of the the three transfers averaging 9.2 points 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. But Thompson is close behind with 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds. Guard Keyera Eaton also missed time with various ailments; she averaged 10 points per game. NEXT WOMAN UP: Eastern Shore got key contributions from role players in lieu of the injuries. Nine players started at least 10 games for the Hawks last season, including five returners. Guard Alexus Hicks stepped into Byrom s point guard role and performed admirably, while Ra Jean Martin provided a spark off the bench and in the starting lineup. Hicks currently leads the conference in steals with 35, a mark that is good for third nationally. Hicks is also on a quest to become the 25th member of the 1,000 point club. She currently has 940 points, just 60 away. MAGARITY IN PURSUIT: Regan Magarity is also on the way to joining the 1,000 point club. She stands at 827 career points, 163 shy of that plateau. Magarity is 25 rebounds shy of tying Amy Byrne and Michelle Bain for 10th all-time at Virginia Tech.. DOUBLE-DOUBLES ALL AROUND: The Hokies have tallied 10 doubledoubles on the season already. Regan Magarity has five, Chanette Hicks and Alexis Jean each own two and Rachel Camp recorded one in the game against West Virginia. SHARPSHOOTER: Kendyl Brooks continued her streak of hitting at least one 3-pointer in 17 straight games, with her shot with 1:16 remaining in the fourth quarter of Sunday s contest against Radford. BROOKS EMBARKS ON YEAR NUMBER TWO: In his first year in Blacksburg, Kenny Brooks led the Hokies to a 20-win season, the Elite Eight of the WNIT and set multiple program records which included; points scored (2,405), 3-pointers made (247) and an attendance record. 4 Head Coach Fred Batchelor Hometown: Virginia Beach, Va. College: Valley Forge, th Season at Eastern Shore ( ) 18 th as collegiate head coach ( ) Fred Batchelor enters his fourteen season as women s basketball head coach at Maryland Eastern Shore. Batchelor is the winningest coach in Maryland Eastern Shore women s basketball history. Under his leadership, the Hawks have compiled 163 wins while posting.500 or better in the conference nine of the last 13 seasons. His ultimate goal is to lead Maryland Eastern Shore to the NCAA tournament by building a program that exemplifies high character, exceptional talent and a diligent work ethic. Batchelor s staff has recruited and developed six student-athletes who finished their freshman season on the MEAC All-Rookie Team, including local standout Casey Morton, who was Rookie of the Year. He also coached Kristi Veltkamp, the MEAC s inaugural Defensive Player of the Year in In the season, Toni Kennedy led the nation in three-pointers made per game (3.4). Batchelor has over 20 years of coaching experience at a variety of levels. Having coached men s basketball for half of his career, he has served as head coach of Villa Maria Junior College where he took that program from zero to double-digit wins in just one season. He also served as a men s assistant at the University at Buffalo. He returned to his alma mater, Buffalo State College, to serve as the interim men s head coach. At the conclusion of that year, he was named the women s basketball head coach at Buffalo State, where he has experienced his most success as a collegiate head coach. He led his team to a school-record 25 wins and was the first African- American coach in both men s and women s basketball to win the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship in its 60-plus-year existence. As a result, he was voted SUNYAC Coach of the Year. He also guided the Bengals to an NCAA Division III tournament appearance. Before coming to Maryland Eastern Shore, he also served as women s head coach at Elizabeth City State where he lead the Vikings to a thirdplace finish along with a semifinal CIAA tournament appearance. Batchelor received his Bachelor s degree from Valley Forge Christian College where he was a two-time National Christian College All- American point guard recording over 1,600 points and over 800 assists. He was recently inducted into VFCC s Athletic Hall of Fame. He also earned his master s degree in Multi-disciplinary Studies (with a concentration in Educational Leadership) from Buffalo State. OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE WOMEN S BASKETBALL ASSISTANT COACHES Associate Head Coach Sidney Raikes enters his first season as associate head coach at Maryland Eastern Shore. Raikes completed his first year at Towson University after eight seasons at Coppin State University. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, player development along with practice and game preparation. Raikes is a graduate of Coppin State, who earned his degree in Criminal Justice in Raikes was a star on the basketball court for the Eagles. He led Coppin State to a four-year record of overall and a 56-8 mark in MEAC play. Coppin State went 47-1 in MEAC action during Raikes final three seasons. The Eagles captured three straight MEAC regular season titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1993 and the NIT in Raikes ranks sixth all-time in scoring at Coppin State with 1,412 career points and is one of only 20 1,000 point scorers in program history. Raikes earned all-conference honors three times in his career. Assistant Coach Casey Morton Morton enters her second season as an assistant coach for her alma mater. Morton ended her collegiate career in 2011 with 1,230 points, which is fourth all-time in the program s Division I history. The Eastern Shore native and former Mardela High standout also ranks fourth in total assists (296) and total steals (188). In her freshman year, she won Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Year while earning a spot on the conference s All-Rookie Team. Morton was selected to the All-MEAC team in her senior year after posting more than 11 points per game. Graduate Assistant Coach Vontreece Hayes enters her third season with the Hawks after finishing her collegiate career at Greensboro College. Recently, Vontreece was part of the semi-professional women s basketball USA Elite in Greensboro, N.C. Also, Hayes joined the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s (WBCA) So You Want To Be a Coach Program, where she met Coach Batchelor. Since 2008, she has volunteered with the National Carolina Basketball Association tournament under former Utah Jazz and Wake Forest guard Delaney Rudd. Since 2009, she taught Team Reign Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) 12u and 16u girls. For three years ( ), she coached North Carolina Basketball Association AAU Phoenix Select 12u.
