4 Nyla Milleson Head Coach Sixth Season Kansas State, (19 years) Nyla Milleson begins her sixth season at the helm of the George Mason women s basketball program. She became the eighth head coach in program history on April 16, In , the Patriots had one of the best seasons in program history and tied for the 10th-best one-season turnaround in the nation with a nine-game turnaround. They set a school record for wins (24), made the postseason for just the third time in program history - and first in 14 years - and won a postseason game for the first time as they reached the second round of the WNIT. The record marked Mason s first winning season in 14 years and they finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 with 11 conference wins for their highest conference finish and most conference wins since She also had the A-10 Player of the Year in Natalie Butler, who was drafted by the Dallas Wings of the WNBA and A-10 Rookie of the Year in Nicole Cardano-Hillary. Prior to Mason, she spent six years as the head coach at Missouri State where she led the Lady Bears to three WNIT appearances. Under the tutelage of Milleson, the Lady Bears went (.547) and were the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference regular-season champions. Prior to Missouri State, she started the women s basketball program at Drury University and spent seven seasons ( ) as the head coach. She made five straight NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, including a 2004 NCAA Division II national championship runner-up finish, and was inducted into Drury s Athletics Hall of Fame last fall. 5 Women s Basketball Game Notes SCOUTING HOUSTON The Cougars (4-7) have lost two straight and four of five. They suffered a overtime loss to UT Arlington on Monday at home. Junior guard Jasmyne Harris leads the team with 17.1 points a game and is tied for fourth in the nation with 38 steals. Junior Angela Harris (no relation) and senior Seritha Hawkins also average double figures scoring, with 11.1 and 10.6 points per game, respectively. Houston was picked to finish third in the American Athletic Conference after returning all five starters from a team that won 20 games and reached the WNIT in SERIES HISTORY The teams have met just once last year, with Houston holding on for an victory on Dec. 21, 2017 in Houston. Then-graduate student Natalie Butler led the Patriots with a career-high 35 points and 20 rebounds. Nicole Cardaño-Hillary also added 14 points before fouling out in the final minutes. Houston s Angela Harris and Seritha Hawkins each scored 18 points and the Cougars nabbed 16 steals. LAST TIME OUT The Patriots shot a season-high 57.6 percent from the field and matched their season-best for points with a victory at Eastern Kentucky on Dec. 9. Sophomore Nicole Cardaño-Hillary scored a career-high 33 points on 12-of-21 shooting and made all eight free throw attempts. She became just the 18th player in program history to score 30 points or more. Junior Jacy Bolton added a season-high 18 points and junior Alexsis Grate and Marika Korpinen each scored 10 points. Mason also shot a season-high 83.3 percent at the free-throw line. SENSATIONAL SOPHOMORE Guard Nicole Cardaño-Hillary has picked up right where she left off after being named the 2018 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. The 5-foot-7 guard is averaging a league-best 21.1 points. On Dec. 9, she set a career high with 33 points against Eastern Kentucky. She was named the A-10 Player of the Week on Dec. 10 for the second time this season after she averaged 24.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals in a pair of wins over Delaware and EKU. She has scored in double figures in 43 of 44 career games, including all 10 this season, and has notched six 20-point plus games this year. The native of Madrid, Spain, ranked third in the A-10 last year with 17.8 points a game. Her 605 points set the Mason freshman single-season scoring record and ranks fourth among all players. She also led the league in steals (84) and was second on the team in assists (102). Among all Division I freshmen, she ranked second in scoring and third in steals. The Atlantic 10 All-Conference Third Team selection was tabbed to the preseason A-10 All-Conference First Team and All-Defensive Team. ATLANTIC 10 LEADERS Several Patriots are among the league s best in numerous statistical categories. Sophomore Nicole Cardaño-Hillary leads the Atlantic 10 in scoring with 21.1 points per game. Sophomore forward Camarie Gatling also ranks first in the conference in shooting percentage (.600) and fellow sophomore Marika Korpinen is atop the league in 3-point shooting percentage (.500). Junior Jacy Bolton, who has three double-doubles this season, ranks second in the A-10 with 7.8 rebounds a game. MEET THE NEWCOMERS The Patriots welcome two freshmen - Livija Kaktaite and Devyn Wilson. Kaktaite, a 5-foot-7 guard, spent last year at Long Island Lutheran High School in New York but is originally from Sveksna, Lithuania. She helped Lithuania win bronze this past summer at the U20 European Championship and won a gold medal in 2015 at the U16 European Championship. Wilson, a 6-foot-1 forward, scored more than 1,000 points at Norcross (Ga.) High and was named to the Region 7A First Team last winter. The Patriots will also add Aussie Rosie Schweiser to the team for the spring semester. The 6-foot guard/forward will be graduating from high school in her hometown of Canberra, Australia this month and then will enroll in classes at George Mason in January. LIFT OFF THE BENCH The Mason reserves are averaging 21.0 points, including scoring a season-high 38 points off the bench at UMKC on Nov. 23. The bench has scored at least 20 points in five games and twice dropped more than 35 points. Junior Alexsis Grate scored a season-high 10 points off the bench on Dec. 9 at Eastern Kentucky. INTERNATIONAL PATS The Patriots have three student-athletes on their roster who were born outside of the United States: sophomore Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (Madrid, Spain), sophomore Marika Korpinen (Turku, Finland) and freshman Livija Kaktaite (Sveksna, Lithuania). Cardaño-Hillary moved to the states when she was 12, graduating from Vista Ridge High outside of Austin, Texas. Korpinen and Kaktaite both finished their schooling at Long Island Lutheran High in New York but have spent most of their lives in Europe PROSPECTUS The Patriots return nine letterwinners and three starters from a team that won a school-record 24 games, posted their best Atlantic-10 finish (fourth) since joining the league, reached the WNIT and won a postseason game for the first time in program history A-10 Rookie of the Year Nicole Cardaño-Hillary is back after averaging 17.8 points - third-most in the A-10 - in and leading the conference with 84 steals. Also back is junior captain Jacy Bolton (9.5 ppg) and junior Sarah Kaminski (6.5 ppg).the Patriots graduated two of their top players in A-10 Player of the Year Natalie Butler (19.2 ppg, 16.6 rpg - best in the nation) and forward Tayler Dodson (team-high 110 assists). Butler, who led the country with 33 double-doubles, was drafted by the Dallas Wings in the third round of the WNBA draft and is currently playing in Belgium. Both Butler and Dodson received their master s degrees on Thursday.
