4 TEAM NOTES NEW YEAR - NEW FACES FOR THE GRIFFS 4Canisius started the season with six new scholarship players, including four true freshmen, making the Griffs on the of the youngest teams in the MAAC. 4The Blue and Gold started the season at Buffalo with a total of 270 combined Division I games played among eight players, including junior guard Jonathan Sanks, who played 19 games as a redshirt-freshman at Georgia Southern in Senior Jermaine Crumpton is the most experienced returning player for Canisius, as he starts his final season on Main Street having played in a total of 90 career games. He is also the Griffs active leader in career starts with 39, with 34 of those starting assignments coming last year. 4Sophomores Malik Johnson and Isaiah Reese played in all 34 games last year as freshmen last year. Johnson started all 34 games as well, setting the program record for starts by a true freshman. WELCOME TO YEAR TWO UNDER WITHERSPOON 4Canisius head coach Reggie Witherspoon starts his second season at the helm of the Golden Griffins program after leading the team to an overall mark and an appearance in the CIT last season. 4The 18 wins last season ties Witherspoon with former head coach Earl Brown for the second-most victories in a coach s first year leading the Griffs. Brown led the team to an record in Former head coach Jim Baron holds the program record for wins in year No. 1 with the program after he guided the team to a mark in Witherspoon s first year at Canisius was highlighted by a seven-game win streak that ran from Dec. 7 through Jan. 4. That seven-game winning streak was the program s longest since , and featured OT wins over rivals Buffalo and St. Bonaventure. 4The season was capped by Canisius earning a bid to the 2017 CIT, the program s fourth trip to the CIT in the last five seasons. Witherspoon joins Baron as the only two coaches in program history to lead the Griffs to the national postseason in their first year on Main Street. CANISIUS PICKED NINTH IN MAAC POLL 4 Canisius was recently picked to finish ninth in the annual MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll. This is the second-straight year where the Griffs were picked to finish ninth in the league's preseason poll. HIGH-FLYIN GRIFFS 4 The Griffs finished the season ranked third in the MAAC and 58th in the nation in scoring average after posting 78.4 points per game. 4Canisius scored 80-plus points 16 times last year, where the team went 12-4, and closed out the season with a school-record 2,665 points. 4On Nov. 18, Canisius posted 104 points in a win over Youngstown State. The 104 points in a regulation game are the most for the team since Feb. 28, GRIFFS GO FOR 100 IN HOME OPENER 4 The Canisius men s basketball team won its first game of the season Nov. 18 when the Golden Griffins defeated Youngstown State at home by a score of The 104 points scored in regulation are the most for the team since Feb. 28, 1989 when the Griffs defeated Elmira at home by a score of Canisius has now scored 100-or more points in a game 47 times, including at least once in each of the last three years. 5 TEAM NOTES DROPPING DIMES 4 According to kenpom.com, Canisius ranked sixth in the nation in assists-to-field goal percentage, with 64.0 percent (601-of-943) of the team s baskets last season coming off assists. 4 The Griffs ended the last season with a school-record 601 total assists as a team, and the squad s 17.7 assists per game average ranked sixth-best in the nation. 4 Canisius dished out 29 assists on 38 made field goals in the team s win over Youngstown State Nov. 11. Sophomore Isaiah Reese had 11 assists in that game, the most for a Canisius player since the season. MAKING THE FREE ONES COUNT 4 As a team, Canisius shot 73.6 percent (470-for-639) from the free-throw line last year, which ranked fourth in the MAAC and 70th in the nation. 4 Despite scoring 104 points in the win over Youngatown State Nov. 18, the Griffs shot just 53.6 percent (15-for-28) from the chairty stripe in that game. ROAD WARRIORS 4 Canisius ended the campaign with 10 true road wins, which ranked second-best in the MAAC behind regular-season champion Monmouth. 4The 10 road victories last year for the Blue and Gold are the most for the program since , when the Griffs earned 11 road wins en route to a record and a trip to the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden. WHAT THE GRIFFS DID ON SUMMER VACATION 4The Canisius men s basketball team took a five-day foreign tour north of the boarder to Canada Aug , where the team played five games and posted a 3-2 record. 4The foreign tour was the program s first since Canisius traveled to Italy in the summer of The Griffs spent time in Montreal and Ottawa, spending down time to tour such sites as Old Montreal, Olympic Stadium and Saint Joseph s Oratory of Mount Royal in Montreal before heading to Ottawa, Canada s capital city. 4On the basketball court, Canisius won three games. The team was led offensively by sophomore Isaiah Reese, who averaged 21 points per game in five contests. 6 PLAYER NOTES CRUMPTON EARNS PRESEASON HONORS 4Canisius senior Jermaine Crumpton starts the season as a Preseason All-MAAC First Team honoree, the program s first since Billy Baron was honored prior to the start of the campaign. 4The Niagara Falls, N.Y., native is Canisius top returning scorer after he averaged a career-high 15.9 points per game a season ago. 4The Preseason All-MAAC teams are voted on by the conference s 11 head coaches. RETURNING AWARD WINNERS 4Canisius starts the season with one of the youngest rosters in the nation, with eight players ranking as freshmen or sophomores. However, the Griffs are the only team in the MAAC to return multiple MAAC honorees from a season ago. 4Senior Jermaine Crumpton and sophomore Malik Johnson both earned all-league honors for the Blue and Gold last season. Crumpton was an All-MAAC Third Team honoree, while Johnson was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team. 4The third-team acknowledgment for Crumpton was his first all-conference award, and Johnson s appointment to the MAAC All-Rookie Team makes him just the ninth player in program history to garner that honor. CRUMP 1K 4 Canisius senior Jermaine Crumpton started his final season with the Griffs as a member of the program s famed 1,000-career point club. The Niagara Falls, N.Y., native scored his 1,000th career point March 3, 2017 in the team s MAAC Tournament quarterfinal loss to Saint Peter s. 4 Crumpton is the eighth player in school history to reach the 1,000 point plateau in his junior year, and just the second Griff to accomplish that feat since Frank Turner did it in Crumpton starts tonight s game ranked 29th in school history with his 1,074 career points. He is the second Niagara Falls, N.Y., native to reach 1,000 points in a Canisius uniform, joining for Griff guard DeWitt Doss ( ). CHARGE IT! 4 Jermaine Crumpton took a team-high 24 offensive charges last season, more than any other player on the Canisius roster. 4 The Niagara Falls, New York native took multiple charges in five games last season, which also led the team. 4 Crumpton is the program s active leader in career charges taken, with 30 to his credit in 91 career contest. ONE-THREE FOR A TRIPLE-DOUBLE 4 Sophomore guard Isaiah Reese became the first Canisius player in the program s 114-year history to record a triple-double Nov. 18, when the Griffs defeated Youngstown State at home by a score of Reese scored a career-high 23 points and dished out a career best 11 assists, while matching a career-high with 11 boards. He also had three steals in 34 minutes of action. 4 The Miami, Fla., native is the first Division I player this season to post a triple-double on the final box score, and he s the first MAAC player to record a triple-double in a game since former Iona guard Scott Machado had one against Marist Feb. 12, REESE IS A KEY PIECE IN Sophomore guard Isaiah Reese closed out his rookie campaign by averaging 7.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game last season. 4 Reese leads Canisius with his 19.0 points per game this season. He has multiple 3-point makes in all three games to date, with a total of eight tryes coming in Canisius last two outings. 4 The Miami, Fla., native led the team in scoring when the Griffs defeated Colgate Nov. 1 in an exhibition game. He finished that contest with 24 points and added six assists to the winning effort. He also led Canisius in scoring on the team s foreign tour to Canada in August, where he averaged 21.0 points per game over five contests. 4 Reese was the first player to sign an NLI to join the program after head coach Reggie Witherspoon took over in May MAN OF STEAL 4Sophomore guard Isaiah Reese was credited with a career-high five steals in the Griffs loss to Saint Peter s Feb. 26, He has recorded multiple steals in 16 of his first 37 games in a Canisius uniform. 4The Miami, Fla. native finished his first year in Canisius Blue and Gold ranked eighth in the MAAC in steals per game with 1.4 per contest. FOLEY FILLS IT UP 4Sophomore guard Spencer Foley scored a career-high 25 points in the team s win over Youngstown State Nov. 18, highlighted by his 6-for-7 effort from 3-point land. 4The Chicago, Ill., native went a perfect 6-for-6 from 3-point land in the first half against the Penguins, which set a school record for 3-point makes in a 20-minutes span. 4He went into the locker room at halftime with 22 points, the most points for a Griff in a half since former guard Malcolm McMillan had 22 points in the first half of a game at Hofstra Nov. 13, A START FOR THE RECORD BOOK 4Freshman guard Takal Molson set a Canisius record with 25 points in the team s loss to Buffalo Nov. 11. FOUR NEW FRESHMEN FOR THE GRIFFS 4 The Canisius basketball roster features four true freshmen, one from Buffalo, one from Connecticut, the program s first Alabama native and a Canadian-born player. 4 Guard Takal Molson returns to the Queen City after spending the season at TAAG Academy in Tampa. Molson, who graduated from Health Sciences Charter School, played basketball and football at St. Mary s of Lancaster (N.Y.). He signed his NLI to join the program in April Forward Jalanni White comes to Canisius after averaging 12.1 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game last year at Notre Dame - West Haven in New Haven, Conn. He helped lead that team to the school s first perfect season (22-0). 4 Guard D.J. Heath, a four-star recruit from Anniston, Ala., is the highest rated recruit to sing an NLI with Canisius since former Griff Elton Frazier ( ) joined the program. Heath helped lead his Sacred Heart high school squad to three-straight Alabama Class 1A state crowns. 4 Forward Scott Hitchon brings a strong front court game to the Griffs roster after growing up in Whitby, Ontario. He averaged 19 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for Thornlea Secondary last season. Thornlea is the same program that produced former Griff guard Kassius Robertson ( ). The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called The Hounds of Zeus in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid.
