* The federal and state governments can try the same defendant for the same crime as long as the person violated both a federal and a state law.

1 THE ANCHOR ISSUE 14 Double Jeopardy By: Jacolby Doss & Shanna Jackson Last week, it was discovered that investigators in the Casey Anthony trial, may have missed key evidence which could have helped convict her for the murder of her daughter. Upon hearing this, some people began to question why she could not be taken back to trial and possibly be convicted of murder. In the United States legal system, the double jeopardy clause, states someone cannot be tried twice for the same crime. However, there are some exceptions: * After a defendant is acquitted criminally, a civil suit may still be brought. * The federal and state governments can try the same defendant for the same crime as long as the person violated both a federal and a state law. *An individual can be tried twice based on the same facts as long as the elements of each crime are different. 2 Clubs! Boss club is full of events this year! November thirtieth, the Boss club members had a matching/speed dating event. Every student will be matched with another member based on what they like and interests. They are to keep in contact and become friends. Once a week, the partners have to communicate via phone. Boss club also has events once a month. December- Christmas party January- Tie dye/ potluck We asked the students why they liked Boss club, what makes it fun, and what they have learned. Natalia: I enjoy being in Boss club because I make new friends and im getting excited about talking to my buddy I was matched with. Julie Wethington: Boss club is really fun because we always rotate events. In October we went fishing and it s really nice to just interact with all the kids and spend time with them. Brittney Murrell: I like this class because it s something I want to do in the future. Working with these kids is always interesting. Breanna Kean: Interacting with the kids in this class has to be the best part about it. Heather Sinclair: I enjoy Boss Club because not only are you just interacting, but you re helping them open up.

3 Boys Basketball The Russell County Mighty Laker Basketball team has started off their season with three games in five days. The Lakers started off their season Tuesday November 27 against Lincoln County. It was a back and forth game with Russell County coming out on top Tyler Robertson led the team with 29 points, with Barton Mann adding 16. Two days later, the Lakers traveled to Franklin-Simpson High School to take on the Wildcats. Tyler Robertson nearly had a triple double in the game, finishing with 38 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists. Ben Bertram and Barton Mann added 11 and 10, respectively. The Lakers defeated the Wildcats handily, by the score of 75-55, improving their record to 2-0. On Saturday evening, The Lakers traveled to South Warren High School in Bowling Green to take part in the State Farm High School Shootout. The Lakers faced off against the Ohio County Eagles, one of the top teams in Region 3. Coach Willie Feldhaus noted that the team s strong defensive effort was enough to keep them in the game, but a poor shooting night from the field, as well as the free throw line, ultimately ended up costing the Lakers the game as they fell to the Eagles. This was the Laker s first loss of the young season. Tyler Robertson finished with 13 points and Nick Coffey added 11 as well. Girls Basketball The Lady Laker basketball team started off their season this past Saturday at McCreary Central High School. The Lakers took on Maribyrnong, an Australian travel team. The Lady Lakers won the game Senior Regan Helm led the team with 12 points, while junior Madison Loy added 10 points. This was the Lady Lakers first win on the season in their quest for another 16th district championship. Coach Pippen liked his team s effort throughout the game, noting their intensity on the defensive end as one of the keys that led the Lady Lakers to victory. By: Brandon Roark & Zac Oakes

What s the wildest thing that happened to you in ROTC? Riding a roller coaster for the first time in many years during out recent trip to kking s Island 4. What s the most rewarding thing that has happened to you during ROTC? One of my former students who graduated in 2000 in now an assistant principal at one of the high school s in my former school district Sr. Chief 1. Why did you join ROTC? I was retiring from the Navy in 1997 and was looking at what I wanted to do in my second career and I found information posted on a board about becoming a NJROTC instructor after I retired from the Navy. 2. What s your favorite thing about ROTC? Working with the young people and watching how they grow with confidence and mature into young adults. Also I enjoy helping the cadets meet thier goals 3. What s the wildest thing that happened to you in ROTC? I guess that would have to be when on a PT day at my old school we were playing soccer. We had a cadet that was a rather large man 6 9 and about 350 lbs. we called him BIG SAM and he was a freshman at that size. Well, another cadet ran into him trying to get the ball, needlees to say the Big Sam did not move and the other man got knocked out cold. We even had to check for breathing and a pulse! 4. What s the most rewarding thing that has happened to you during ROTC? To me every day has it s rewards when dealing with the cadets in my class. Every day I come to work knowing that I have been blessed by finding this job and coming to Russell County The NJROTC Program The NJROTC (Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps) was established in 1964 High Schools across the nation. Instructed by retired members of Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, and other enlisted people the NJROTC curriculum is based on citizenship, and leadership development. The program goes beyond the classroom as cadets also do community service, drill competition, field meets, flights, visits to naval activities, marksmanship, training, and other military training.

Austin Hadley: As much as he wants to I guess. What s the correct answer you may ask? The amount of wood that woodchucks would chuck on a given day varies greatly with the individual woodchuck. According to a Wall Street Journal article, New York State wildlife expert Richard Thomas found that a woodchuck could chuck around 35 cubic feet of dirt in the course of digging a burrow. Thomas reasoned that if a woodchuck could chuck wood, he would chuck an amount equal to 700 pounds. Some say it depends on three factors: The woodchuck s desire to chuck said wood. The woodchuck s need to chuck the aforementioned wood.

7 Senior Page Financial Aid Workshop All senior students looking to receive financial aid for college need to fill out the FAFSA form. All schools in the nation require students to fill out this form before they can receive financial aid. Seniors will receive the letter in the mail explaining everything you will need to complete the form. Lindsey Wilson College will be mailing seniors the form so dont throw any mail you receive from Lindsey away. Financial aid applications will be available on January 9th. There will be somone here to help students fill out the form. Students will fill out the form during the school day and parents will come to the school library at 5 p.m. that afternoon to finish the application. Senior Trip The 3rd payment for the Senior trip is due in December. There are a few spots available if any senior is interested in going to New York City.
