The Lobos have three wins in their last four games after defeating Hawai i, 28-27, on October 17. San José State head coach Ron Caragher: In his third season as the San José State head coach. Has a record of with the Spartans. Overall, he is in his ninth season as a major college head coach with a record. Caragher s first six seasons as a head coach were at the University of San Diego. Series history: The Spartans lead the series, These teams are meeting for the first time since San Jose State defeated New Mexico, 20-12, in the inaugural New Mexico Bowl on December 23, The Spartans carry a two-game winning streak in the series and are winners of six of the last seven games between these teams. The Lobos last win in the series was a victory in Albuquerque on October 9, Two Spartan greats led the Lobos: Dud DeGroot, the most successful head coach in San Jose State football history, and Bob Titchenal, captain of the 1939 undefeated Spartan team, would eventually become the football head coach at the University of New Mexico. DeGroot compiled a record during the 1932 through 1939 seasons. In his first season at San Jose State, the Spartans were undefeated for the first time with a record. In his final season, San Jose State was 13-0 scoring 322 points while yielding just 29. His Spartans had eight shutouts that season. DeGroot was New Mexico s head coach from 1950 through His teams compiled a win-loss record topped by the 1952 team that posted a 7-2 overall mark. The 1952 Lobos had five shutouts and gave up just 46 points. Titchenal was an All-American center at San Jose State and would go on to play in the NFL for Washington ( ) and for San Francisco (1946) and Los Angeles (1947) in the All-American Football Conference. He was New Mexico s head coach from 1953 through The Lobos were in those three seasons including losses to San Jose State in 1954 (26-14) and 1955 (14-0). Titchenal was San Jose State s head coach from 1957 through The Spartans had a combined win-loss record in those seasons and lost to the Lobos in 1962 (25-13). The best-known player he coached was quarterback Dick Vermeil who would go on to lead the St. Louis Rams to the Super Bowl XXXIV championship..500 is the target again: For the third time this season, San José State can return to the.500 plateau for the season with a victory. Ervin s total broke the previous record of 286 set by Nathan DuPree in an October 31, 1992 game at UNLV. His 42 carries were a personal single game high. He previous high of 22 carries was in the 2014 Utah State game. With four pass receptions for 45 yards, Ervin accumulated 345 yards in all-purpose running against Fresno State. His all-purpose yardage total was more than Fresno State s 247 yards of total offense. Closing in on 1,000 rushing yards: Tyler Ervin s 896 rushing yards after seven games leave him 104 shy of becoming the 11th San José State player to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Of the 10 previous Spartans to gain 1,000 yards in a season, Deonce Whitaker (1,577 in 2000) and Johnny Johnson, Jr. (1,219 in 1988) did it in their ninth game. Most rushing touchdowns in a season in three seasons: After seven games, San José State has 16 rushing touchdowns. This year s Spartans already surpassed the team s 11 rushing touchdowns in 2014 and 12 by San José State in In 2012, San José State rushed for 17 touchdowns in 13 games. The last time a Spartan team scored 20 or more touchdowns in a season by running the ball was in 2004 with 22 rushing touchdowns. Team passing completion percentage: San José State enters the New Mexico game with a team passing completion percentage of 66.8 percent - tops in the Mountain West. In the New Hampshire (9/3) and Fresno State (9/26) wins, the Spartans completed 85.7 percent and 86.9 percent of their passes, respectively, and did not throw an interception in either game. Season-high pass interceptions: For the first time this season, the San José State defense came up with two pass interceptions in a game in the UNLV triumph (10/10). Maurice McKnight, with his first of the season, and Jimmy Pruitt, with a team-high third of the year, had the interceptions. The last time San José State did not win a game in which it had two or more interceptions was an October 8, 2011 loss at BYU. That night, the Spartans came up with two interceptions. Pass defense keeps high ranking: The Spartans enter the week of October 19, the national leader in fewest passing yards allowed per game (121.0) and 17th in passing efficiency defense (98.2 rating). Opponents are completing 51.4 percent of their passes against San José State - the second best mark among Mountain West teams.

Offensive outburst at start of the season: San José State was credited with 707 yards of total offense in its win over New Hampshire. The total is the fifth best single-game figure in school history, the sixth time the Spartans gained at least 700 yards in a game and ranks 13th among 2015 single-game performances through October 10. Less than 200 yards allowed: The Spartan defense had a solid night in its opener forcing New Hampshire to give up the football on six possessions without gaining a first down and yielding just 186 yards of total offense. Season captains named: Running back Tyler Ervin, cornerback Jimmy Pruitt, offensive tackle Wes Schweitzer and linebacker Christian Tago were named team captains for the 2015 season. Tago is the only non-senior among the four. Seven get the scholarship word: During preseason camp, head coach Ron Caragher announced seven players would be placed on scholarship. Cornerback Dominic Barnes, running back Chris Dadson and wide receiver/holder Chris Kearney received the news early in the month. Defensive ends Mikal Berry and Nick Oreglia, quarterback Mitch Ravizza and offensive lineman Michael Talafus were informed following the August 15 practice. Of the seven, Kearney is the only senior and Berry is the one sophomore. Dual-sport Spartans: Since the end of the 2014 football season, wide receiver Tyler Winston and quarterback Mitch Ravizza played a second NCAA Division I sport. Winston played 21 minutes and scored 4 points as a reserve guard in the San José State men s basketball game against Seattle University (12/13/14). Ravizza completed his third season as a utility player/pinch runner on the Spartan baseball team. New assistant coaches: Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Al Borges, special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Dan Ferrigno and offensive line coach Adam Stenavich are in their first season as San José State assistant football coaches. Combined, the new Spartan assistants have 63 seasons (Ferrigno, 34; Borges, 28; Stenavich, 1) of major college coaching experience.
