The Spartans lost at UNLV, 41-13, on September 30. Fresno State record: 2-2, 1-0 Mountain West. The Bulldogs won their Mountain West opener with a win over Nevada at home on September 30. San José State head coach Brent Brennan: In his first season as a major college head coach. Has a major college head coaching record of 1-5, all at San José State. Brennan returns to San José State after six seasons as a receivers coach at Oregon State. He was a Spartan assistant coach during the 2005 through 2010 seasons. He is 0-0 as a head coach against Fresno State. Fresno State head coach Jeff Tedford: In his first season as the Bulldogs' head coach. Has a coaching record of 2-2 with the Bulldogs. Overall, he is in his 12th season as a major college head coach and has a record of He is 0-0 as a head coach against San José State, but is a combined 6-2 as a former player (1-1) and assistant coach for Oregon (1-0) and Fresno State (4-1) against the Spartans. As a quarterback in the 1981 and 1982 games against San Jose State, Tedford led Fresno State to 72 total points rushing for two touchdowns and passing for four. The Spartans, who intercepted five Tedford passes in two seasons, won in Fresno in 1981, 65-33, and lost in San Jose the next year, Series history: Fresno State leads the series, The two teams first played in 1921 and San José State went home with a 14-2 victory. The Spartans have more games against the Bulldogs (80) than any other opponent. San José State has wins in four of the last five games including a victory in San José last season. The Bulldogs last win in the series was a triumph in Fresno on November 8, San José State and Fresno State still hold the NCAA record for most penalties in a game by two teams, 36 (24 by the Spartans and 12 by the Bulldogs), during the 1986 contest won by San Jose State, The Spartans' 24 penalties for 199 yards also remains a Football Bowl Subdivision record for most penalties in a game by one team. Homecoming: This year's San Jose State-Fresno State game is the annual Homecoming contest for the Spartans. Since 1933, San Jose State is in Homecoming contests. The Spartans are looking for their first Homecoming win since 2014 when they defeated UNLV, This year's game marks the ninth time Fresno State is San Jose State's Homecoming foe and the first since The Spartans are 6-2 in the previous eight Homecoming games with the Bulldogs as the opponent. For San Jose State fans, the best known Homecoming game vs. Fresno State was in 1986 when the Bulldogs came into Spartan Stadium undefeated and ranked #19 in the Associated Press poll.

The game was named Sports Illustrated's Most Exciting Game of the Year. Valley Trophy: Since 2013, San José State and Fresno State play for the Valley Trophy. San José State is the metropolitan capital of the high-tech Silicon Valley. Fresno State is the largest city in the agriculturally-rich San Joaquin Valley. The two schools are separated by approximately 150 driving miles. San José State participating in Extra Yards For Teachers Program: San José State is one of the eight Mountain West schools participating in the College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation's Extra Yard for Teachers Week honoring the contributions teachers make in the lives of children of all ages. Teachers from Cadwaller, Carolyn Clark, Arbuckle, Dorsa, Ernesto Galarza, Horace Cureton, Linda Vista, Lnydale, O.B. Whaley, Russo/McEntee Academy and Tipton elementary schools; Fischer, Joseph George, Mathson, Renaissance Academy and Sheppard middle schools; and Gunderson, Richmond and San Benito high schools are being honored. One teacher from these schools will be honored with a $1,000 grant from San José State and the Mountain West to help support the teacher's classroom project listed in DonorsChoose.org. Nate Velichko One of 181 National Semifinalists: Offensive tackle Nate Velichko is one of 181 semifinalists named by the National Football Foundation for the 2017 Campbell Trophy honoring college football's top scholar-athlete. On November 1, 12 finalists will be named. Each finalist will be awarded an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship and will be honored in New York city. The winner will have his postgraduate scholarship award increased to $25,000. Velichko is a senior from Foster City, Calif., majoring in kinesiology. The Ellen Show honors San Jose State football: On the September 26 nationally-syndicated Ellen Show starring Ellen Degeneres, the San Jose State University football team was featured for community support, participation and involvement through its Beyond Football Program. Through the Ellen Foundation and Cheerios cereal One Million Acts of Good, Ms. Degeneres presented San Jose State University football $25,000 to continue its work in its Beyond Football Program. A 13-game regular-season schedule: For the first time since the 2010 season and fifth time in school history, San José State has a 13-game regular-season schedule. The Spartans also played 13 regular season games in 2002, 1939 and The 2017 San José State football team is the first in school history to play six games in a season through September 30. Busiest defense in FBS football: Six games has a lot do with it, but San José State s defense has faced more snaps to date than any other Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team in games played through September 30. Five Spartan opponents have combined for 509 snaps. UMass is next closest at 423. First to 40, 50, 60, 70 and now 80: Linebacker Frank Ginda is the first Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player this season to be credited with 40 tackles and now 50, 60, 70 and tackles. Ginda has 87 tackles in six games after a game-high 14 at UNLV on September 30. The offense turned those takeaways into 34 points. On the opposite side of the ball, 18 Spartan turnovers became 93 points. There was a season-high 35 points off of turnovers in the loss to Utah State. Spartans in top-10 for defensive touchdowns: Heading into the Fresno State game, San José State is tied for ninth nationally with two touchdowns scored by its defense. In the Cal Poly win, linebacker Jamal Scott picked up a fumble and ran 22 yards for a touchdown. More recently against Utah State, cornerback Jermaine Kelly scored a touchdown on a 68-yard interception return. Texas and Utah State share the national lead with four defensive touchdowns. Sack count increasing: The San José State defense has six quarterback sacks in the last two games and 10 for the season after a season-high four against Utah State (9/23) and two at UNLV (9/30). Seven Spartans have a sack to their credit in Protecting the quarterback: The September 30 UNLV game marked the first time this season San Jose State's quarterbacks were not sacked in a game. This season, the Spartans have allowed 12 sacks in six games. Protection leads to production: With protection in and around the pocket and no quarterback sacks, San Jose State had its first 300-plus passing yardage game of the season at UNLV with a season-best 315 yards on 49 pass attempts. Offense showing signs: San Jose State gained more than 400 yards of total offense, 462 at UNLV, for the first time since a season-high 482 against Cal Poly on September 2. In the games at Texas, at Utah and home vs. Utah State, the Spartans averaged just yards of total offense against those three opponents. 30 pass completions: The San Jose State-UNLV game marked the first time since the 2015 season opener at home vs. New Hampshire on September 3 that the Spartans had at least 30 pass completions in a game. San Jose State was 30-of-49 with two interceptions for 315 yards and a touchdown against UNLV. 50-yard field goals at San José State: Junior Bryce Crawford became the tenth San José State kicker to convert a field goal of 50 or more yards when he kicked a 51-yard field goal at Utah on September 16. Crawford's 51-yarder was the first field goal of 50 or more yards by a Spartan since Austin Lopez's 50-yard field goal at Wyoming in As an encore, Crawford kicked a 53-yard field goal at home against Utah State on September 23. His two 50-plus yard field goals are the 13th and 14th times in school history a San José State kicker made a field goal of 50 or more yards. The 53-yard field goal is the second longest in school history and the longest without the benefit of altitude. Former longtime NFL kicker Joe Nedney kicked a 60-yard field goal to win a game at Wyoming in Crawford (51, 53), Quinn Nordin of Michigan (55,50), Daniel Carlson of Auburn (54, 52, 50) and Matt Gay of Utah (51, 56) are the four Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) kickers with two or more field goals of 50 or more yards in games played through September 23. Crawford is the first San José State kicker with field goals of 50 or more yards in consecutive games and joined Austin Lopez (2013) and Tony Brown (1985) as Spartans with two field goals of 50 or more yards in a season. Streak ends: Bryce Crawford made 17 consecutive field goals over two seasons before missing from 52 yards at UNLV on September 30. The 52-yard field goal try was his second of the game after making a 28-yard try in the first quarter. His streak is the second longest in school history trailing Austin Lopez ( ) who made his first 23 field goal tries covering his entire freshman and the first half of his sophomore season. Crawford's last two misses are 52 yards at UNLV on September 30, 2017 and 50 vs. Hawai'i on October 21, 2016.

Freshman QB starters at San José State: Montel Aaron became the sixth San José State freshman of any kind to start a game at quarterback since freshman eligibility was reinstated in 1972 when he started the September 9 Texas game. Other Spartan freshmen to start at quarterback since 1972 include current sophomore Josh Love in 2016 at Iowa State and Adam Tafralis. Aaron's start at Utah was the 14th time a San José State freshman started a game at quarterback since Doug Allen (1984, one); Greg Centilli (1988, two), Marcus Arroyo (1998, five), Tafralis (2004, three) and Love (2016, one) were the other occasions a freshman started at quarterback for the Spartans. Paso Robles pair among top Spartan pass catchers: Wide receiver Bailey Gaither and tight end Josh Oliver, teammates since their Paso Robles (Calif.) High School days, are two of the team's top two pass catchers. Oliver had seven career receptions in his first two seasons and heads into the Fresno State game third on the team in pass receptions with 17. He had a single-game career-high five catches at UNLV. Gaither came into the season with four career receptions as a redshirt freshman. He has 21 catches and leads the team with four touchdown receptions. Young Spartans: The current San José State football roster consists of 48 freshmen. In the last eight seasons, the 2017 squad is the third one to begin a season with at least 40 freshmen. The 2012 (41) and 2013 (45) teams had more than 40 freshmen on the opening-game roster. The game had 189 plays, 39 possessions, 23 punting situations, 18 assessed penalties, and four replay reviews leading to a 4-hour, 3-minute contest length. The 2013 San José State-Fresno State game lasted 4-hours and 9-minutes. Plenty of chances to score: The 39 possessions in the San José State-USF game are the most in a San José State football game since the Spartans 2016 home opener against Portland State. The Spartans and Vikings combined for 37 possessions, 19 by Portland State and 18 by San José State in a Spartan win. 900 Club: In a game with 64 combined points scored, there were more punting yards than total offense in the San José State-USF game. San José State (387 yards), and USF (548 yards) combined for 935 yards of total offense. The two teams punted for 941 yards on 11 punts by the Spartans and 452 on 12 punts by the Bulls. Lots of pass plays: San José State s 50 pass plays against #19-USF are the most attempts by the Spartans in a game since 51 passes in a loss to Colorado State on November 1, USF tied a San José State opponent record becoming the third school to run 101 plays against the Spartans in a game. Lots of punts: The San José State-USF game included 23 punts, 11 by San José State s Michael Carrizosa and 12 by USF. The last time the Spartans punted 10 times in a game was in a 48-0 loss to Boise State on October 16, USF became the first San José State opponent to punt at least 10 times in a game since Utah State punted 10 times in a 30-7 Spartan victory on October 11, The San José State-USF contest marked the first time since a 21-0 home loss to Louisiana Tech on November 8, 2008 that there were at least 20 punts in a Spartan game. That day, there were 11 by San José State and nine by Louisiana Tech. New coordinators: Offensive coordinator Andrew Sowder and defensive coordinator Derrick Odum are in coordinator roles for the first time in their respective coaching careers. Sowder is in his ninth season of college coaching; Odum, his 22nd. Two generations of Bernardis: First-year offensive line Joe Bernardi is a second-generation San José State offensive line coach. His dad, Gary Bernardi, now at the University of Colorado was the Spartans offensive line coach during the 2010 through 2012 seasons. The Bernardis are the second multi-generational football family to serve as San José State assistant coaches. Tom Quinn, current New York Giants special teams coordinator, had the same role with the Spartans during the 1999 through 2001 seasons. His dad, Mike Quinn, was San José State s special teams coordinator from 1976 through Youth movement in the coaching box: Offensive line coach Joe Bernardi (30), offensive coordinator Andrew Sowder (29), linebackers coach Bojay Filimoeatu (27) and wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings (26) begin the season aged 30 and under. Filimoeatu and Cummings will be a year older in December. Experienced offensive line: San José State s projected starting offensive line of tackles Troy Kowalski and Nate Velichko, guards Jeremiah Kolone and Chris Gonzalez, and center Keoni Taylor have 151 combined starts after six games of the 2017 season. That number is tops among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools. Families that stay together: The 2017 San José State team has two sets of brothers and one second-generation Spartan. Cornerback Jermaine Kelly is the older brother of wide receiver Jeremy Kelly. Linebacker William Ossai, a senior, is the older brother of freshman Isaiah Ossai. Isaiah is the third Ossai in the family to join the San José State football program. Their older brother, Onyeka Ossai, was a linebacker during the 2001 through 2003 seasons.

New CEFCU Stadium playing surface: In 2017, San José State replaced its FieldTurf playing surface with its second artificial playing surface, AstroTurf, since CEFCU Stadiium opened in For the first time, the Spartans home field has a twotoned look with light and dark greens alternating every five yards from goal line to goal line. Home stadium name history: San José State and Citizens Equity First Credit Union (CEFCU, pronounced SEFF-cue) are in year two of a 15-year naming rights agreement for the university s football stadium, built in 1933, to be called CEFCU Stadium - Home of the Spartans.
