Most recently, the Spartans lost at #20/#23-Oregon, 35-22, on September 15. Hawai i record: 4-1, 1-0 Mountain West. The Rainbow Warriors defeated Duquesne, 42-21, on September 22. San José State head coach Brent Brennan: In his second season as a major college head coach. Has a major college coaching record of 2-14, all with the Spartans. Brennan returned to San José State for 2017 after six seasons as a receivers coach at Oregon State. He was a Spartan assistant coach during the 2005 through 2010 seasons. He is 0-1 as a head coach against Hawaii. His first college football coaching position was as a University of Hawai i graduate assistant in Hawai i head coach Nick Rolovich: In his third season as Hawai i s head coach. Has a coaching record of 14-17, all with the Rainbow Warriors. He is 2-0 as a head coach against San José State. The Novato, Calif., native was an All-America quarterback for City College of San Francisco (CCSF) and played two seasons for the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League. Rolovich also was an assistant coach at CCSF during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Series history: Hawai i leads the series, with one cancellation. The Rainbow Warriors have won the last two meetings between these teams including a decision in Honolulu last year. The Spartans last win in the series was a road victory in San Jose State s last victory over Hawai i in San Jose was on October 14, 2011 when San Jose State edged Hawai i, The one cancellation in the series was the December 16, 1941 game in Honolulu. The game was canceled following the December 7 attack on Pearl Harbor. The Spartans traveling party arrived in Hawai i on December 3. Mountain West openers: San Jose State seeks its first win in a Mountain West opener since joining the conference in The Spartans lost Mountain west openers to Utah State (2013, 2017), Nevada (2014), at Air Force (2015) and at New Mexico (2016). The last time San Jose State won a conference opener was in 2008 when San Jose State staged a second-half comeback to win at Hawai i, 20-17, when both teams were Western Athletic Conference members. Three consecutive home games: For the first time since 2007, San Jose State is playing three consecutive games as a home team starting with Hawai i on September 29. The Spartans host Colorado State on October 6 and Army West Point at Levi s Stadium in nearby Santa Clara, Calif., on October 13. In 2007, San Jose State hosted UC Davis, Idaho and Hawai i on consecutive weeks.

San Jose State is 1-2 in Homecoming games when Hawai i is the opponent. The Spartans defeated the Rainbow Warriors, 28-27, in the 2011 Homecoming contest and lost in Hall of Fame weekend: The Hawai i football game caps a week of San Jose State Sports Hall of Fame activities. The 2018 induction ceremony is Friday, September 28. This year s Hall of Fame class will be introduced during halftime of the football game. Sophomore Trevor Robbins at center, redshirt freshman Jesse Chamberlain at right guard, junior Jesse Osuna at a linebacker position. Senior John Toussaint at cornerback and sophomore Tre Webb, a safety, were first-time starters in UC Davis season opener. In the Washington State game, wide receiver Austin Liles, offensive tackle Deano Motes and defensive back Tre White made their first starts at the major college level. Linebacker Kyle Harmon joined the list of first-time starters for San Jose State in the Oregon contest. Tops at his position: For the third consecutive week, Josh Oliver is the leading pass receiver among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) tight ends. After three games, Oliver is averaging 6.33 receptions a game and has 19 catches for the season. He and Missouri s Albert Okwuegbunam (5.75/game) are the only two tight ends listed among the Football Bowl Subdivision s (FBS) top-50 pass receivers in games played through September 22. Oliver caught a single-game career best eight passes for 86 yards in the opener vs. UC Davis, six at Oregon including his first touchdown of the season and five balls for 51 yards at Washington State. 13 of his 19 receptions this season resulted in a San José State first down. A year ago at Hawai i, Oliver had five receptions for 62 yards. Spartans match 2017 interception total: Three games into the season, San Jose State s six interceptions matches its season total for The Spartans presently rank 12th nationally with their six interceptions in games played through September 22. Cornerback Dakari Monroe and linebacker Jesse Osuna share the team lead with two interceptions each and rank tied for 10th nationally in pass interceptions. Third nationally: Senior cornerback Dakari Monroe ranks third nationally in passes defended heading into this week s action. Monroe has a 2.67 per game average with two interceptions, one vs. UC Davis and his second at Oregon, and six pass break ups.

Linebacker Jesse Osuna, cornerback Nehemiah Shelton and linebacker Kyle Harmon each had their first major college interception in the Washington State game. A high five for Bryce Crawford: Senior Bryce Crawford kicked three field goals in a game for the fifth time in his career in the Oregon game. Crawford converted his three attempts of 31, 28 and 25 yards. For the season, he is 4-of-5 in field goal kicking. His only miss this season is from 53 yards. Kicks by Crawford: Senior Bryce Crawford is listed among the top-50 kickers in three categories for the second week in a row. He ranks 33rd in both field goals per game (1.33/game) and field goal accuracy (80.0 percent) and 35th in punting (43.0/punt). No other Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) kicker is listed in the top-50 in those three categories. Oregon game features two more special teams highlights: In the Oregon game, San Jose State blocked its first opponent kick-scoring try in three years when defensive lineman Bryson Bridges blocked a Zach Emerson second quarter 42-yard field goal try. The last time a Spartan blocked either a point after touchdown (PAT) or field goal attempt was in the 2015 win over New Mexico when Christian Tago was credited with blocking a Lobos field goal try. In the fourth quarter, kickoff returner Thai Cottrell notched a career long 96-yard kickoff return. He was tackled at the Oregon 4-yard line which eventually led to a Bryce Crawford 25-yard field goal. His kickoff return matches the seventh longest of the 2018 season by a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player in games played through September 15. Three games, two or more quarterbacks: In each San Jose State game this season, the Spartans used at least two quarterbacks. Josh Love, Michael Carrillo and Montel Aaron played in the opener vs. UC Davis. Aaron and Carrillo were the quarterbacks at Washington State. Love and Aaron called the signals for the Spartans at Oregon. New look offensive line: For the Washington State and Oregon contests, the San Jose State starting offensive line consisted of Jackson Snyder and Deano Motes at tackles, Troy Kowalski and Jake Colman at guards and Trevor Robbins at center. Robbins is the only one of the five to start all three games at the same position. A master s degree in their future: Quarterback Michael Carrillo and defensive lineman Boogie Roberts are two San José State players playing as graduate students. Carrillo graduated with cum laude honors majoring in business administration with an emphasis in marketing in May He is pursuing a M.B.A. Roberts majored in communication studies. He is enrolled in the master s program in interdisciplinary studies and tailored his curriculum towards classes that focus on sports broadcasting. 200-plus for Montel Aaron: Quarterback Montel Aaron posted a personal single-game best quarteback efficiency rating in the UC Davis game. Aaron completed 13-of-19 passes for 254 yards and touchdown passes of 79 and 17 yards to wide receiver Bailey Gaither, all in the second half of the UC Davis encounter. Young Spartans: The current San José State football roster now consists of 39 freshmen. In the last nine seasons, the 2018 squad is the fourth one to begin a season with at least 40 freshmen. The 2018 (40), 2012 (41), 2013 (45) and 2017 (47) teams had more than 40 freshmen on the opening-game roster.

Other Spartan freshmen to start at quarterback since 1972 include Josh Love in 2016 at Iowa State and Adam Tafralis. Doug Allen (1984, one); Greg Centilli (1988, two), Marcus Arroyo (1998, five), Tafralis (2004, three) and Love (2016, one) were the other occasions a freshman started at quarterback for the Spartans. Experienced defensive line: The Spartans have three returning starters in the defensive line in seniors Bryson Bridges and Sailosi Latu and graduate student Boogie Roberts. Collectively, they have 64 starts among them and are the most experienced unit on the 2018 Spartans. Families that stay together: The 2018 San José State team has a set of twin brothers, a third sibling from one family and the remaining brother from a previous Spartan brothers duo. Wide receiver Jeremy Kelly returned to the team after missing the last portion of the season. His older brother, Jermaine Kelly, was a 2018 seventh round draft choice of the Houston Texans. Redshirt freshman Isaiah Ossai is the third Ossai in the family to join the Spartan football program. Brother, Onyeka Ossai, was a linebacker during the 2001 through 2003 seasons. Older brother William Ossai was a San José State linebacker from Defensive back Andrew Jenkins is the twin brother of Tre Jenkins. Their dad, Aaron Jenkins, played at the University of Washington and ran for a 6-yard touchdown in a comeback win over the Spartans in New coaches: Offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven and defensive backs coach Aric WIlliams joined the San José State coaching staff in February McGiven was the offensive coordinator at Oregon State in 2017 and held the same position at Utah State, Montana State, Weber State and Southern Utah. Williams coached the previous three seasons at the Idaho. Two generations of Bernardis: Second-year offensive line Joe Bernardi is a second-generation San José State offensive line coach. His dad, Gary Bernardi, now at the University of Colorado was the Spartans offensive line coach during the 2010 through 2012 seasons. The Bernardis are the second multi-generational football family to serve as San José State assistant coaches. Tom Quinn, former New York Giants special teams coordinator, had the same role with the Spartans during the 1999 through 2001 seasons. His dad, Mike Quinn, was San José State s special teams coordinator from 1976 through Beyond Football: The San José State University Beyond Football program encompasses personal growth, identifying career objectives and fostering community service. From August 1, 2017 through July 31, 2018, the Spartans logged more than 5,000 hours of activities, an average of about 50 hours a player. Home stadium name history: San José State and Citizens Equity First Credit Union (CEF- CU, pronounced SEFF-cue) are in year three of a 15-year naming rights agreement for the university s football stadium, built in 1933, to be called CEFCU Stadium - Home of the Spartans. CEFCU and San José State Athletics first became partners in 2011 with signage on the stadium scoreboard and at the West gate entry point. Apparel: In July 2017, San José State University began a six-year, all-sports apparel agreement with adidas.
