The Spartans lost at RV/#24-Utah, 54-16, on September 16. Utah State record: 1-2, 0-0 Mountain West. The Aggies lost at Wake Forest, 46-10, on September 16. San José State head coach Brent Brennan: In his first season as a major college head coach. Has a major college head coaching record of 1-3, all at San José State. Brennan returns to San José State after six seasons as a receivers coach at Oregon State. He was a Spartan assistant coach during the 2005 through 2010 seasons. He is 0-0 as a head coach against Utah. While an assistant at San Jose State, the Spartans were 3-3 against the Aggies. Utah State head coach Matt Wells: In his fifth season as the head coach of the Aggies. Has a major college coaching record of 29-27, all at Utah State. He is 2-0 as a head coach against San José State. Series history: San Jose State leads the series, The Aggies have wins in the last six meetings including a 41-7 decision in Logan during the 2014 season. The Spartans' last victory in the series was a 30-7 triumph in San Jose during the 2008 season. These teams have faced each other as conference members of the Mountain West, Western Athletic Conference, Big West and the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. Mountain West openers: Since joining the Mountain West in 2013, San Jose State is 0-4 in conference-opening games. The upcoming Utah State marks the second time in five seasons the two teams are facing each other in a Mountain West opener in CEFCU Stadium. In 2013, Utah State was a winner over San Jose State. Utah State as a conference opener: For the fifth time, Utah State is a conference-opening opponent for San Jose State. Besides the 2013 Mountain West opener, the Spartans defeated the Aggies in 2006 and 2007 to open Western Athletic Conference action with a 1-0 record. In 1979, San Jose State and Utah State opened the season as Pacific Coast Athletic Association members and played to a tie which was the highest scoring tie game in NCAA history for 12 years until BYU and San Diego State played to a tie in Utah State-San Jose State connections: New San Jose State University linebackers coach Bojay Filimoeatu played his college football at Utah State during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Former San Jose State head coaches Dave Baldwin ( ), John Ralston ( ) and Terry Shea ( ) coached at Utah State. The San Jose State football team will wear an Extra Yard For Teachers helmet decal provided by the CFP for the Utah State game. A 13-game regular-season schedule: For the first time since the 2010 season and fifth time in school history, San José State has a 13-game regular-season schedule. The Spartans also played 13 regular season games in 2002, 1939 and Busiest defense in FBS football: Four games has a lot do with it, but San José State s defense has faced more snaps to date than any other Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team in games played through September 16. Three Spartan opponents have combined for 343 snaps. Oregon State is next closest at 304. Despite the number of plays for the San José State defense, the Spartans are credited with forcing 26 punts, recovering five fumbles and intercepting one pass in 64 opponent possessions their first four games. First to 50: Linebacker Frank Ginda is the first Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player this season to be credited with at least 50 tackles. Ginda has 57 tackles in four games after a game-high 15 at Utah on September 16. He heads into the Utah State game the national leader in total tackles per game at yard field goals at San Jose State: Junior Bryce Crawford became the tenth San Jose State kicker to convert a field goal of 50 or more yards when he kicked a 51-yard field goal at Utah on September 16. The 51-yard field goal is Crawford's career long and matches the fifth longest field goal by a Spartan. The 51-yard field goal is the 13th time any San Jose State kicker made a field of 50 or more yards. Crawford's 51-yard field goal was the first field goal of 50 or more yards since Austin Lopez kicked a 50-yard field goal at Wyoming in the 2014 season. Crawford's 51-yard field goal matches the ninth longest field goal by a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) kicker this season. Gaither in the top-10: Sophomore Bailey Gaither is one of 15 players tied for fifth nationally with four receiving touchdowns. Gaither has at least one TD catch in every game this season except in the 56-0 loss at Texas. He had two in the opener vs. #19-USF and one each against Cal Poly and at Utah. Takeaways matter: The San José State defense recovered three fumbles and turned them into 14 points in the win over Cal Poly. At Utah, the Spartans matched their season-high of three takeaways and turned them in 10 points. In San Jose State's three losses, 10 turnovers turned into 55 points, 14 each for USF and Texas and 27 at Utah. Four games, four quarterbacks: In San José State s first four games, four quarterbacks were used. Freshman QB starters at San José State: Montel Aaron became the sixth San Jose State freshman of any kind to start a game at quarterback since freshman eligibility was reinstated in 1972 when he started the September 9 Texas game.

Aaron's start at Utah was the 14th time a San José State freshman started a game at quarterback since Doug Allen (1984, one); Greg Centilli (1988, two), Marcus Arroyo (1998, five), Tafralis (2004, three) and Love (2016, one) were the other occasions a freshman started at quarterback for the Spartans. Paso Robles pair leads Spartan pass catchers: Wide receiver Bailey Gaither and tight end Josh Oliver, teammates since their Paso Robles (Calif.) High School days, are the team's top two receivers. Oliver had seven career receptions in his first two seasons and heads into the Utah State game second on the team in pass receptions with 12. Gaither came into the season with four career receptions as a redshirt freshman. He has 18 catches and leads the team with four touchdown receptions. Young Spartans: The current San José State football roster consists of 48 freshmen. In the last eight seasons, the 2017 squad is the third one to begin a season with at least 40 freshmen. The 2012 (41) and 2013 (45) teams had more than 40 freshmen on the opening-game roster. Previously, the last time San José State played in a game with 100-plus degree weather was on September 1, 2007 in a 45-3 loss at Arizona State. The evening temperature was 101 degrees at kickoff. Four hours, three minutes of football: For the first time since defeating #16-ranked Fresno State, 62-52, on November 29, 2013, San José State played a football game that lasted at least four hours in its season-opener against USF. The game had 189 plays, 39 possessions, 23 punting situations, 18 assessed penalties, and four replay reviews leading to a 4-hour, 3-minute contest length. The 2013 San José State-Fresno State game lasted 4-hours and 9-minutes. Plenty of chances to score: The 39 possessions in the San José State-USF game are the most in a San José State football game since the Spartans 2016 home opener against Portland State. The Spartans and Vikings combined for 37 possessions, 19 by Portland State and 18 by San José State in a Spartan win. 900 Club: In a game with 64 combined points scored, there were more punting yards than total offense in the San José State-USF game. San José State, with its 387 yards, and USF, with its 548 yards of total offense, combined for 935 yards of total offense. Lots of pass plays: San José State s 50 pass plays against #19-USF are the most attempts by the Spartans in a game since 51 passes in a loss to Colorado State on November 1, USF tied a San José State opponent record becoming the third school to run 101 plays against the Spartans in a game.

New CEFCU Stadium playing surface: In 2017, San José State replaced its FieldTurf playing surface with its second artificial playing surface, AstroTurf, since CEFCU Stadiium opened in For the first time, the Spartans home field has a two-toned look with light and dark greens alternating every five yards from goal line to goal line. Home stadium name history: San José State and Citizens Equity First Credit Union (CEFCU, pronounced SEFF-cue) are in year two of a 15-year naming rights agreement for the university s football stadium, built in 1933, to be called CEFCU Stadium - Home of the Spartans.
