The 2012 (41), 2013 (45) and 2017 (47) teams had more than 40 freshmen on the opening-game roster. New look in the offensive line: San José State s starting offensive line of tackles Troy Kowalski and Jackson Snyder, guards Jake Colman and Jesse Chamberlain, and center Trevor Robbins now have 35 starts combined. Compared to last year s starting five of Kowalski and Nate Velichko at tackles, Jeremiah Kolone and Chris Gonzalez at guards and Keoni Taylor at center, they had 123 starts among them heading into the 2017 season. Freshman QB starters at San José State: Montel Aaron became the sixth San José State freshman to start a game at quarterback since freshman eligibility was reinstated in 1972 when he started the 2017 game at Texas. Other Spartan freshmen to start at quarterback since 1972 include Josh Love in 2016 at Iowa State and Adam Tafralis. Doug Allen (1984, one); Greg Centilli (1988, two), Marcus Arroyo (1998, five), Tafralis (2004, three) and Love (2016, one) were the other occasions a freshman started at quarterback for the Spartans. Experienced defensive line: The Spartans have three returning starters in the defensive line in seniors Bryson Bridges and Sailosi Latu and graduate student Boogie Roberts. Collectively, they have 61 starts among them and are the most experienced unit on the 2018 Spartans. Tested linebackers: Senior Jamal Scott, junior Ethan Aguayo, and sophomores Tysyn Parker and Alii Matau were starters during the 2017 season. With 10.0 tackler for loss to his credit, Scott was one of three Spartans with at least 10.0 tackles for loss a year ago. Despite missing three games, Aguayo led the team with two fumble recoveries and was third on the Spartans with 84 tackles. Parker was a starter the last four games of the season and was credited with 38 stops. Matau was thrust into a starting role as a hybrid defensive lineman for the BYU and San Diego State contests. New-look secondary: With three former Spartan defensive backs from last year s team playing professional football in the NFL and CFL as of August 25, the San José State secondary definitely has a new look. Senior Dakari Monroe has the most starting experience with 11 career starts primarily as a cornerback. Sophomore Jonathan Lenard, Jr., started the last six games of 2017 at a safety position. Crawford doing it all: The 2017 Colorado State game could be termed a dress rehearsal for senior Bryce Crawford. In that game, he was the Spartans placekicker, punter and took care of kickoffs. He handled each kicking discipline vs. UC Davis. Families that stay together: The 2018 San José State team has a set of twin brothers, a third sibling from one family and the remaining brother from a previous Spartan brothers duo. Wide receiver Jeremy Kelly returned to the team after missing the last portion of the season. His older brother, Jermaine Kelly, was a 2018 seventh round draft choice of the Houston Texans. Redshirt freshman Isaiah Ossai is the third Ossai in the family to join the San José State football program. Brother, Onyeka Ossai, was a linebacker during the 2001 through 2003 seasons. Older brother William Ossai was a San José State linebacker from 2015.
