2 Mid-American Conference 94 Former Eastern Michigan University greats have been at the forefront of Mid-American Conference athletes that have excelled in championship roles in the world of athletics. EMU players Grant Long, George Gervin and Earl Boykins have all enjoyed outstanding success in the NBA players while the football ranks have produced Super Bowl champions in John Banaszak, Ron Johnson and Lional Dalton. In addition, EMU graduates Hayes Jones and Hasely Crawford have won gold medals in the Olympic Games. Since its inception in 1946, the MAC has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. Under the guidance of Commissioner Rick Chryst, the seventh commissioner in the history of the league, the MAC has responded to the ever-changing landscape of membership issues and member standards in the fast-paced environment of collegiate athletics. Dr. Carol Cartwright, former President of Kent State University, chaired the Executive Committee of the NCAA Board of Directors from during a legislative process that keyed legislation relative to I-A status. In May of 2005, the MAC added Temple as a football only member (effective 2007) with a plan that includes a men s and women s basketball scheduling partnership with the Philadelphia-based institution. The conference now has national leadership positions on the following NCAA committees: Board of Directors (Dr. Sidney Ribeau, BGSU); Management Council (Dell Robinson, MAC Associate Commissioner); Championships/ Competition Cabinet (Brad Bates, Miami); Committee on Academic Performance (Brad Bates, Miami); Academic Eligibility Compliance Cabinet (Warde Manuel, Buffalo); and Athletic Certification Committee (Shonna Brown, MAC Assistant Commissioner), Playing Rules Oversight Panel (Rick Chryst, MAC Commissioner). Further, The MAC also has representation on the Division I Sport Committees and related governing groups: men s basketball (Laing Kennedy, Kent State), baseball (Dave Heeke, Central Michigan), volleyball (Kelli Andrews, Toledo), softball (Janna Blais, BGSU), football issues committee (Mike O Brien, Toledo), men s basketball issues committee (Charlie Coles, Miami), men s basketball rules committee (Reggie Witherspoon, Buffalo), track and field (Rich Ceronie, Miami), women s basketball issues committee (Jim Phillips, Northern Illinois), women s golf (Robert Collins, Northern Illinois), women s gymnastics (Jerry Reighard, Central Michigan) BCS AD Advisory Committee (Mike O Brien, Toledo) and BCS Presidential Oversight Committee (Dr. John Peters, NIU). MAC Milestones Both in the classroom and on the field of competition, the MAC continues to excel at the national level. In an NCAA report released in October 2004, the MAC led the 11 I-A conferences in long term graduation rates for football studentathletes at public institutions. In addition, the Eastern Michigan University w o m e n s s w i m m i n g t e a m p o s t e d t h e highest GPA in the nation in In March of 2006, Chryst and Cleveland Cavaliers President Len Komoroski announced that the Mid-American Conference Men s and Women s Basketball Tournaments will remain in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena through The MAC also announced a format change for both tournaments, bringing all 12 men s and women s teams to Cleveland beginning in This year, the MAC will co-host the 2007 Women s Final Four at Quicken Loans Arena, after successfully hosting the 2006 NCAA Women s Basketball Regional at Quicken Loans Arena. Chryst also announced a new, five-year relationship with International Sports Properties (ISP), Inc. to oversee and coordinate the league s marketing and sponsorship rights. ISP, which currently manages 29 college properties nationwide, is considered the leader in the collegiate sports marketing industry. The MAC will be ISP s first conference property. ISP will be responsible for managing, and ultimately growing, the MAC s stable of corporate partners, which currently stands at nine - FirstEnergy, Huntington Bank, Kraft, Marathon, GMAC Financial Services, MBNA, Aeropostale, Gatorade and Sirius Satellite Radio. FirstEnergy, title sponsor for the men s tournament since its first year in Cleveland in March 2000, will return as title sponsor of the 2007 event. The 2006 men s basketball tournament at Quicken Loans Arena drew a total of 33,417 spectators, including 10,253 at the Championship Game this season. The total attendance was the second-highest four-session total in MAC Tournament history. It shattered the previous total of 33,349 set in Three teams represented the MAC in post-season action with Kent State advancing to the NCAA Tournament, while Akron and Miami both participated in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). ESPN recently extended its television contract with the MAC through The agreement guarantees the league exposure for the term of the agreement on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. ABC/ESPN owns exclusive rights to the MAC Football Championship game and ESPN/ ESPN2 has those same rights to the MAC Men s Basketball Championship. Complementing ESPN s national television coverage is a broad regional television package in football, men s basketball, women s basketball and selected MAC championship events. The regional network is anchored by long-term agreements with FSN Ohio and Comcast Local in Michigan and Indiana. Comcast Chicago has also been an outstanding partner in raising the MAC s profile in the nation s third-largest market. History of the MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men s and women s basketball since its move to Northeast Ohio. T h e M i d -A m e r i c a n C o n f e r e n c e w a s founded as a five-school league on Feb. 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947) and Ohio University (1946). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University ( , 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947). Affiliate members include Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) in men s tennis and men s soccer and Missouri State University (formerly known as SMS) in field hockey. In 1946 men s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total of 23 sports. Women s sports were brought into the MAC structure in F o r m e n, c h a m p i o n s h i p s ( 1 1 ) a r e sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and tennis.

From the North - U.S. 27 to the first Mt. Pleasant exit. This will exit to the right and become Mission Street on the north side of Mt. Pleasant. Take Mission all the way south with the CMU campus on the right (west) side of Mission starting at the corner of Bellows and Mission B. From the South - U.S. 27 to the first Mt. Pleasant exit. This will exit to the left and become a two-lane road that goes right into campus and the town. CMU will be on the left (west) side. C. From the East - (1) I-75 to M-57 or M-46 and then follow directions above (B). (2) I-75 to U.S. 10 to M-20 east. Follow M-20 into Mt. Pleasant (becomes Pickard Street) and turn left (south) on Mission, and then follow directions above (A) D. From the West - M-46 to U.S. 27 and then follow directions above (B). Eastern Michigan A. From the North - U.S. 23 south to Washtenaw Avenue east (exit 37A); take Washtenaw to Hewitt Road; turn left on Hewitt and proceed to the Convocation Center on the east side of the street. B. From the South- U.S. 23 north to Washtenaw Avenue east (exit 37A) and then follow directions above (A). C. From the East - (1) Take I-94 west to Michigan Avenue exit 181B. Turn right on the ramp and move into the far left lane and turn left on Hewitt Road. Head north on Hewitt for 2.5 miles, past Washtenaw Avenue. The Convocation Center is on the east side of Hewitt Road. (2) Take I-96 west to M-14 west. Follow M-14 to U.S. 23 south. Go south to Washtenaw Avenue east (exit 37A); take Washtenaw to Hewitt Road; turn left on Hewitt and proceed to the Convocation Center on the east side of the street. D. From the West - Take I-94 east to Michigan Avenue exit (exit 181). Turn left and get in the far left lane. Turn left on Hewitt and head north on Hewitt approximately 2.5 miles, past Washtenaw. The Convocation Center is on the east side of the street. Kent State A. From I-76 - take the Kent (Route 43) exit and proceed north to Route 261; turn right (east) onto Route 261. Proceed 1/4 mile to Campus Center Drive; turn left and proceed to campus. B. From I-80 - take the Streetsboro exit (#13). After the toll booth, proceed straight (follow the Ravenna sign) onto Route 14 (southeast) past Route 303 to Route 43; turn right (south) on Route 43 and continue for approximately six miles until you come to the traffic light at Main Street; follow Main to the fifth traffic light; turn right (south) onto Lincoln Street; proceed on Lincoln Street to the first traffic light; turn left and proceed on Summit Street to the second traffic light; turn left at the light and proceed to campus. C. From I-90 - proceed toward Cleveland. Take I-271 south to I-480 east; stay on I-480 until it becomes Route 14 in Streetsboro. Turn right (south) on Route 43 and then follow directions above (B). Marshall A. From I-64 - Take the Hal Greer Boulevard exit; proceed north towards Huntington to Fifth Avenue; turn right onto Fifth Avenue; turn left onto 20th Street (Marshall s football stadium is directly on the right); turn left onto Third Avenue (Henderson Center Basketball Arena is directly on the left). B. From I-77 - Take I-64 West to the Hal Greer Boulevard exit; then follow directions above (A). C. From Route 52 - Take I-64 East to the Hal Greer Boulevard exit; then follow directions above (A). B. From the South - I-75 north to I-275 north (take the airport exit which goes off to the left); follow signs for Indianapolis/ Cincinnati (I-275 splits and becomes I-74/Indianapolis and I-275/Cincinnati-Dayton); follow I-275 east towards Dayton; take Colerain Avenue exit and turn left. This is State Route 27 north, proceed towards Oxford. C. From I-70 going East - Take the State Route 27 south exit in Richmond, Indiana; proceed through Richmond and Liberty, Indiana to Oxford. D. From I-70 going West - Continue west to State Route 127 south; follow State Route 127 through Eaton and Camden to State Route 73; turn right, to Oxford. Northern Illinois A. From the North or West - Take I-39 south to Route 38 (exit #99); take Route 38 east 14 miles to DeKalb; turn left at Annie Glidden Road and proceed half a mile to campus. B. From the East - Take I-290 or 294 to I-88; take I-88 west to Annie Glidden Road (exit #107); go north on Annie Glidden Road two miles to campus. Ohio A. From the Northeast - I-77 south to State Route 7 (exit #1 - Marietta) to U.S. 50 west to Athens; follow U.S. 50/State Route 32 west to State Route 682 north (sign denotes Ohio University); exit 682 north; turn right at first traffic light (Richland Avenue), and proceed to campus. B. From the Northwest - U.S. 23 south to I-270 east to U.S. 33 east (Lancaster exit) to Athens; exit the second State Route 682 north exit (marked Ohio University this exit); follow 682 north; then follow directions above (A). Toledo A. From the North - (1) I-75 south to I-475 west; exit at Douglas Road; turn left, crossing Monroe, Central and Kenwood; turn right on University Hills Blvd. and proceed onto campus. (2) Route 23 south to I-475 east; exit at Secor Road; turn right, cross Central and Kenwood; turn left at Bancroft; turn right at University Hills Blvd. and proceed onto campus. B. From U.S At exit #36, turn east onto Stadium Drive, go 2.6 miles; turn left onto Oliver Street; cross railroad tracks and immediately turn left; go 1/2 block to Western Avenue; turn right; follow to West Michigan Avenue and proceed westerly one block to campus. C. From M-43 West of Kalamazoo - Go easterly past U.S. 131; after 1.7 miles, turn right onto Solon Street; follow Solon into Howard Street and go 1.1 miles to Stadium Drive; turn left and proceed easterly 1/2 mile to Oliver Street; follow directions above for exiting from U.S. 131 (B). D. From M-43 North of Kalamazoo - Turn left off M-43 (Gull Road) in Kalamazoo onto Riverview Drive; go under the railroad overpass and bear right onto Michigan Avenue; continue westerly on Michigan Avenue for 1/2 mile; it then becomes Kalamazoo Avenue, which is one-way westbound; after 1.4 miles, bear left and go 0.3 miles; cross Main Street and rejoin Michigan Avenue; proceed westerly on Michigan Avenue to campus.
