He is one shy of matching the single-season program record of 14, which was set by Joe Leone in The Pilots have made the NCAA Tournament 15 times in their history, including last season. SENIOR DAY: - Prior to the match on Sunday against Santa Clara, honored their seven seniors on this year s roster. - All seven are starters or have started games for the Zags this season. - This is the largest senior class since 2014, when the Zags also honored seven seniors. - In the match on Sunday, seniors Ben Willis, Christo Michaelson, Jalen Crisler, Nick Ulowetz, and Colton Cavey all played over 100 minutes in the 0-0 tie. Saint Mary s sophomore forward Jake Rudel has been named the West Coast Conference Men s Soccer Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. The sophomore striker recorded a hat trick in the Gaels 5-0 win against Loyola Marymount on the weekend. The hat trick was the program s first since 2006 and is just the third performed by a West Coast Conference men s soccer student-athlete this season. Rudel leads the Gaels with six goals on the year and 13 points. 4 HEAD COACH EINAR THORARINSSON 23rd year - Cornell, 1975 Einar Thorarinsson enters his 23rd season at University as he looks to guide the Bulldogs back to the upper echelon of the West Coast Conference. The all-time leader in coaching wins in program history, Thorarinsson has led GU to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (2001, 2007) and a pair of WCC titles (co-champs in both 1997, 1998). Under his watch, the Bulldogs have finished in the top five in the league 14 times, including eight WCC finishes in the top three. The squad was also honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for academic excellence for the 13th straight season in Since his arrival on the GU campus in January of 1995, Thorarinsson has made an impact on the fortunes of the program, turning it into an annual contender for the WCC men s soccer crown and leading the Zags to their inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance in He earned his third WCC Coach of the Year honor in 2005, and won his 100th match in Thorarinsson took a team laden with 10 seniors back to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, the Bulldogs earning an at-large bid for their second NCAA Tournament appearance. In the 2016 season, the Bulldogs came firing out of the gates with a start including wins over No. 16 Seattle U and at No. 20 American leading to the Zags first national ranking since 2007, as they cracked the NSCAA NCAA Division I Men s Top-25 Poll at No. 20 on September 13. The team finished the season 8-8-2, and nine players were selected to the WCC All-Academic Team, with Jalen Crisler and Jakob Granlund honored as First Team All-WCC, joined by Christo Michaelson and Ben White who were chosen honorable mention, and Davis Behnke, was tabbed to the All-Freshman team. In 2015, Thorarinsson used a mix of veterans and underclassmen to fight to a record, including seven of the 10 losses coming by just one goal. That team, which was led by sophomore All-WCC first-teamer Ben White, senior second-teamer Conner Bevans and junior honorable mention selection Jakob Granlund, finished sixth in the league with a 2-5 WCC record. In 2014, earned a second consecutive fifth-place league finish with a league record, including a pair of back-to-back overtime victories to end the season. Thorarinsson s squad was led by six all-league honorees, including All-WCC first-teamer Lars Ludwigs, second-teamer Clark Phillips and a quartet of All-WCC Honorable Mention recipients. One year prior, in 2013, made a charge into the top three of the league behind a pair seniors in Nick Hamer and Josh Phillips. Hamer earned WCC Player of the Year honors and Phillips was named WCC Defender of the Year on the way to a league record. The squad earned a school-record eight All-WCC honors with Hamer and Phillips earning first team honors, and Clark Phillips (no relation to Josh), earning second team honors. Four others were named All-WCC Honorable Mention and one was selected to the All-Freshman Team. The Zags posted four-straight seventh-place league finishes from In non-league action, GU did post multiple victories over cross-state rival Seattle U as well as the Pac-12 s Oregon State. During that stretch, goalkeeper Ryan Caballero rewrote the GU record books, posting the highest-career saves total (322) and two of the top three highest single season saves totals (93 in 2011, 91 in 2010). He also had the fourth-highest career shutouts total with 12 when his career came to an end in While the results on the field in 2009 weren t up to Thorarinsson s high standards, the Bulldogs did earn some recognition both on the field and in the classroom. The Bulldogs had seven players earn All-West Coast Conference honors, equaling the record number set in Senior forward Tye Perdido was named to the first team while senior defender Nick Barclay and senior midfielder Ben Funkhouser were second-team selections. Four others garnered honorable mention recognition and the Bulldogs also had an All-Freshman Team honoree. Barclay and the team picked up academic honors awarded by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Barclay was named to the University Division Scholar All-West Region team, while the Bulldog men were recognized with a NSCAA Team Academic Award for the academic year for having a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. was one of 145 college men s teams recognized. Barclay earned his honor with a 3.46 GPA. The 2008 season came down to the final match with the Bulldogs still in the West Coast Conference title chase. finished tied for second, three points out of first. In 2009, the Bulldogs suffered five shutouts in eight WCC losses, and six losses were decided by one goal. The Bulldogs had their inaugural Hermann Trophy candidate in 2007 in senior George Josten, who left third in career goals (34) and assists (17), and fourth in career points (85). Josten also became the first Bulldog to be a three-time All-WCC first-team selection and a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American (first team in 2006 and 07, and third team in 2005). He earned Far West Region first-team honors and became the Bulldogs inaugural soccer All-America selection by being named to the 2007 NSCAA/adidas All-America third team. Off the field, Josten was also honored as the 2007 NSCAA/adidas Men s Scholar Athlete of the Year and led a group of 47 athletes named to the 2007 NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America Team. Under Thorarinsson s tutelage the Bulldogs had two players selected in the January 2008 MLS Draft and had a third sign as a free agent. Josten was taken in the second round as the 20th overall pick by the Columbus Crew, defender Austin Washington was drafted in the fourth round as the 54th overall pick by the Chicago Fire and keeper Vito Higgins signed with the Los Angeles Galaxy after attending a tryout camp. Thorarinsson also saw the Bulldogs return to the national rankings in 2007 for the first time since was ranked as high as 12th on the national scene after wins over defending NCAA College Cup champion UC Santa Barbara and 15th-ranked University of Washington. The win over cross-state rival Washington was the first in program history. Prior to 2007, the Bulldogs had been on the verge NCAA Tournament berths in 2005 and 06. In 2005, went into the final weekend with a shot at the WCC regular-season title, and in 2006, was again in the title hunt most of the season before settling for third place. In 1999 once again remained in the title hunt until the final match of the season, losing to Portland 5-2 and dropping to a fourth place finish in the conference standings. The season was highlighted by one of the toughest schedules in Bulldog history, with eight matches against nationally-ranked teams. responded with a record in those matches including upsets of No. 1 Creighton (1-0) in Omaha, Neb.; No. 5 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., and a 1-0 setback at No. 1 Santa Clara. Back-to-back was the theme in 1998 as Thorarinsson again led to a share of the WCC soccer title. The Bulldogs entered the final match of the season with a record and needed a tie or win against San Diego to claim the title outright and secure their inaugural NCAA Tournament berth. fell short in the match, losing the title 2-1 to USD. The upward swing continued in 1997, sharing the WCC crown with Santa Clara University at 4-2-0, missed out on the league s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by virtue of a 2-1 setback at SCU. The 14-4 record again led all WCC teams in victories, and Thorarinsson became the first coach in any sport to earn back-to-back WCC Coach of the Year plaudits. also witnessed its first soccer Player of the Year with Jeff McAllister garnering the honor in The Bulldogs finished that season ranked 16th in the nation by Soccer Times. Thorarinsson, who joined the Bulldogs from across town at Whitworth College, inherited a squad which had gone in Improvement was minimal to in 1995, but then the Zags made noise in the West Coast Conference in 1996, going into the final weekend of conference play in control of their own destiny. Thorarinsson coached at Whitworth College for nine seasons while posting a record, five Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges titles and NAIA national rankings in five of his nine seasons. He was named NAIA District I Coach of the Year from and again in He also coached the Pirates women for two seasons from Thorarinsson has strong soccer ties in Spokane. He coached East Valley High School from , taking the Knights to the final four in He has coached in the Olympic Developmental Program since 1990 and was a United States Soccer Federation Region IV staff coach from He also coached the Spokane Shadow of the USISL in their first of seasons of Thorarinsson holds national coaching licenses from the USSF and NSCAA. The native of Reykjavik, Iceland, played at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY, from , and for Cornell University from He is a 1975 graduate of Cornell with a degree in Landscape architecture. 5 ASSISTANT COACH PAUL MEEHAN Paul Meehan enters his fifth season with after joining head coach Einar Thorarinsson s staff in the spring of He came to the Bulldogs after three seasons as the head men s soccer coach at Corban University in Salem, Ore. In addition to coaching, oversees the program s scheduling and recruiting. In his first four seasons at, Meehan has helped the Zags to a third-place team finish in 2013 and a fifth-place team finish in The third-place in 2013 was the highest finish for GU in five seasons. The 2016 season featured the Zags first national ranking since 2007, as they cracked the NSCAA NCAA Division I Men s Top-25 Poll at No. 20 on September 13. The Bulldogs allowed two goals or fewer in their first nine games and forced four conference games into overtime. Jakob Granlund was selected Third Team All-Far West Region. In 2015, battled to a record which included seven losses by just one goal and a defense that tied for first in the league with just 21 goals allowed on the year. GU placed four players on All-WCC teams with Ben White (First Team), Conner Bevans (Second Team), Jakob Granlund (Honorable Mention) and Garrett Wilson (All-Freshman). At Corban, Meehan inherited a program that had 13 returning players and had gone the four seasons prior to his arrival. In just his second season at the helm, he led the Warriors to an record with an mark in the Cascade Conference, good for third place. His squad finished second in the conference tournament in their inaugural title-game appearance. In 2012, Meehan s Corban squad went 8-7-3, including in the Cascade Conference. Prior to his arrival at Corban, Meehan spent three seasons ( ) as Oregon State University s lead assistant to former head coach Dana Taylor. Working with Taylor, Meehan focused in the areas of recruiting, training and conditioning, budgeting and scheduling, community service, compliance, alumni relations and summer camps. Meehan s recruiting efforts helped bring in former Beaver Danny Mwanga, who was named 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year and No. 1 overall selection in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft by the expansion Philadelphia Union. Meehan is no stranger to s Luger Field, either. He was on the Beavers staff that played the first regular-season match on the new Luger Field in 2008, OSU playing CS Bakersfield to kick off the Nike Soccer Classic. Meehan has also had coaching stints at NCAA Division I members Marshall University ( , ) and Fresno State University ( ). With Fresno State, Meehan helped lead the Bulldogs to the 1998 Western Athletic Conference title and an appearance in the NCAA Men s Soccer Championships. Meehan s collegiate coaching career began at Bellevue Community College in Washington, where he established an record that included three Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) titles and two Coach of the Year honors. After growing up in Seattle, Meehan played at then-naia member Western Washington University from He served as team captain and was an all-conference selection in He graduated in 1983 with a degree in physical education. Following his time at Western Washington in 1984, Meehan helped lead Team USA of the American Indoor Soccer Association to a record and played with Major Indoor Soccer League s Milwaukee Wave reserve team. ASSISTANT COACH VITO HIGGINS Vito Higgins, who made the move from the field to the coaching box for University in 2008 following an outstanding career in the nets for the Bulldogs, returns for his 10th season. The native of Kailua, Hawai i, joined head coach Einar Thorarinsson s staff after a foot injury cut short his professional career. He is second all-time in saves with 305 at GU, and had signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS in the spring of 2008 following a tryout, but decided to forego his professional career when Thorarinsson offered him a spot on his staff. Higgins was instrumental in the Bulldogs reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2007, posting a 0.71 goals-against-average for the season which still ranks second on the single-season list behind fellow Hawaiian Josh Fouts and his 0.68 in Higgins also posted a 1.34 career GAA that still ranks third behind Fouts (0.83) and another Hawaiian, Mike McCarthy (1.16). His 14 career shutouts rank second behind Fouts. He started 70 of his 72 appearances and played more than 6,500 minutes in his career. Under his tutelage, current keeper Ben Willis is ninth all-time with 65 career saves and fourth with a 1.39 goals against average. He has only allowed 32 goals in three years, which is fifth all-time, and his three shutouts are already seventh. The Zags celebrated their seven seniors pregame and led in shots when the match was over. In the 76th minute Joe Corner got a good look for the Zags, but his shot was deflected wide. Colton Cavey had two good runs at the goal with headers, once in the 79th minute and again in the 101st, but was unable to connect fully.
