They showcase school spirit and team work, just like any other sports team, and require a great amount of dedication and skill. At CWNC, the marching band is rather small. It includes 15 students that play in the band, as well 3 students in the color guard, all moderated by Mr. Emanuelson. The band is growing, but at a slow pace. It has only grown by two participants from last school year. The students play a variety of instruments from woodwind to brass and percussion. They increase school spirit at football games during the fall and travel on a different spring trip every year to perform in parades. Last year, the band took a trip to Cedar Point. Members of the band also have many other unique experiences, like spending a day at Kennywood, playing at a Harlem Globetrotters game. Another perk is you receive an honors credit in concert band for participating in marching band. An incredible amount of work goes into making it all happen, as anyone can tell you that it's not very easy to march and play an instrument at the same time! The students spend time in the summer together during Band Camp, which helps them to form a family-like community. We are one big family. We all work well together, and we just have a lot of fun, explained Ana Weigand, a junior involved in marching band. The marching band could improve even more were it to gain more members. We could do a lot more, in the band and in the color guard, said Weigand. The band would be able to better display to other schools how proud we are to be part of the CWNC family. It may be too late to join the marching band this year, but it is the perfect time to begin thinking about joining for next year. 2 GIRLS BASKETBALL PRE-SEASON By: Nicole Twichell As the basketball season is approaching, our Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic girls are working very hard during preseason. In 2015, the team won states but lost in the WPIAL championship. In 2016, the team won the WPIAL championship but lost in the state quarter finals. With all of the past success of the team, the girls have a lot to prove this up and coming season. With the loss of seniors, Sam Breen and Kylie Huffman, division one and division three college players respectively, this year the team has to work that much harder to continue the success of the previous team. The girls have conditioning every week from the trainer of Robert Morris University. The team also has preseason games every week. The girls are excited for the season and are working very hard as it quickly approaches. When asked what are your thoughts and expectations for this up and coming season, Tess Myers, sophomore varsity player answered, This year s group of girls are all very good and together. We are determined to win the WPIAL championship and to make it far into states. The incoming freshmen are very good, along with the rest of the team. The whole team is looking very good and prepared for this season. The team has high expectations for the season. TROJANS ON ICE By: Ava Perock As the hockey team starts their season, they recently took on the Highland Rams at home at UPMC Lemieux Center on Friday, September 22. During the first period, the Trojans scored their first goal. Within a minute from the first goal, the Trojans scored again. Making the score 2-0. Sadly, not long after the Trojans second score, Highland scored their first goal. After another minute, the Rams scored again, tying the score 2-2. Before the end of the first period, the other team made two more goals ending the first period with a score of 2-4. Not much happened during the second period until about halfway through it. The Trojans scored another goal. With less than 5 minutes left in the period, the Highland Rams scored another goal, ending the second period with a score of 3-5. In the third, Trojans scored two more goals and Highland also scored two more. The final score of the game was 5-7. The hockey team has been preparing for their season by training throughout the summer. The training started in July and the team did an off the ice training that lasted two days. The training focused on strength development. When school started, the team began their ice practices where they then focused on the hockey specific team and team systems. The team practices Tuesdays and Thursdays at UPMC Lemieux Center. The two coaches are Mr. Jonathan Hoffmann and Mr. Todd Cian. Going into this new season of hockey, I asked Coach Hoffmann what his expectations were. He stated that, This season will be another year for us to grow and develop as a team. In only our second season and a lot of fresh faces in the locker room, our emphasis is on skill development, playing within our team systems, and enjoying the game. I also talked with some of the members of the hockey team. I sat down with the team s goalie Christopher McFayden and asked him about his hockey experience on the team. He said, My favorite thing about being on the hockey team is the boys that I am honored to play with. 2

3 BOYS BASKETBALL PRE-SEASON By: John Fukon Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic has had great success in basketball in the past two years. The boys team won the WPIAL Championship back to back. In 2015, the boys won the WPIAL and advanced to the quarterfinals of states. Last year, 2016, the boys won WPIAL again and made it one step farther to the state semifinals. This years team needs to live up to the high expectations set in the past two years. It is not an easy task to repeat what has happened the past couple years in this basketball program. Seven seniors graduated from last year s team, and three of them were in the starting five. Also, starting guard, Isaiah Wilson, transferred to First Love Christian Academy.I, John Fukon is the only remaining starter from last year. Therefore, the boys had to work hard since the state semifinal game last year. Open gyms started in April of last year, a month after the season had ended. Along with that, games were played at Cardinal Wright on the North Shore, Northgate, North Hills, and Penn Hills. These games and open gyms occurred all throughout the summer. The boys would also work out in their own time by going to the gym and playing pick up outside. Along with that, head Coach, Dave Long, made the team run a mile in under six minutes and forty five seconds. All this preparation has gotten the boys excited for the season to start. Although it will not start until late November/early December, the team already has their eyes set for glory. When asked what the hope was for this year, senior Brian Davidson said, We got to get that 3-peat. This means that he wants to win a third consecutive WPIAL Championship at the Peterson Events Center. Senior, Michael Drambel said, I want to get back on the floor and hope to get back to the Peterson Events Center. With majority of the players not seeing time they wanted last year, they have become eager to get out on the court and prove themselves. Everyone desperately wants another ring, which is the attitude needed in order to capture one. 4 FALL FASHION Malia Fairbrother In the world of fashion, we're always one step ahead, keeping up to date with the latest trends through social media. The most fashion-savvy users follow all of the top models, fashion blogs, and social media influencers. Currently, credit to Valentino, camouflage is a top pattern this season. Many celebrities, including Kylie Jenner, who has one of the most followed Instagram accounts, are wearing this trend. Whether it be in the form of pants or jackets, camo is making its way into everyday styles from the runway. Another pattern that was popular at the end of summer that is also perfect for transitioning into fall styles is gingham. Most people confuse the pattern with plaid, but the unique, small squares set it apart. One can find this pattern everywhere from shops like Brandy Melville, ASOS, and Nordstrom. A very distinct trend that still going strong is brand name clothing reworks. The most recognized shop for rework pieces is Frankie Collective. The store sells original vintage pieces from brands like Adidas, Fila, Champion, and Ralph Lauren, but also recreates some pieces for a unique look. The brand makes rework skirts, tops, sweatshirts, and co-ord sets. Finally, a trend inspired by various runway looks, is denim on denim. One good tip is to match the wash of the denim if you don't have exact matching pieces. For example, pair light wash denim with light was denim, or dark was denim with dark wash denim. Must Have: A hoodie. Simple yet impactful. Trending brands for hoodies are Champion, Shadow Hill, and Danielle Guizio. 5 MEET MRS. BOUCH By: Caitlin Cole Where did you attend college? I attended the University of Notre Dame for my bachelor's degree where I double majored in English and Anthropology. I then went on to earn my Masters in Education through Notre Dame's Alliance for Catholic Education program (ACE). It is a two year service and graduate school program where teachers work in underprivileged Catholic schools around the country while working on their degrees. I was stationed in Montgomery, AL. Why did you choose teaching as a career? I've always wanted to be a teacher since I was in third grade. I love helping people learn and learning new things myself. Why did you choose Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic? I have a lot of a connections with North. My grandma lives a block away from the old North Catholic, and I grew up playing in their parking lot with my sisters and cousins. I have a number of family members and friends who attended North, and I knew quite a few teachers before coming here. After praying about it for a long time, I decided to apply, and I'm glad I did! This is a school growing in faith, community, and academic excellence, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it. Do you have any lifelong goals? I am publishing my first novel soon - I'm waiting for a proof from the publisher. I've been writing novels since eighth grade and getting published has been a lifelong goal of mine. Mr. Malone told us he ate 10,000 apples in his lifetime, have you done anything cool? I climbed the mountain behind Machu Picchu, have done competitive ballroom dance, took karate for 15 years, and I've been knitting since I was 11.
