5 Coaching Staff Head Coach Ron Cottrell Career & HBU Record: , 26 yrs. Alma mater: Arkansas, 1988 Ron Cottrell has the eighth-longest tenure among active NCAA Division I head men s basketball coaches, entering his 26th season at the helm of the HBU basketball program with a record of (.571). He led the Huskies back to the NCAA Division I ranks after 16 seasons building a perennial power at the NAIA Division I level, and now leads them into their fourth season in the Southland Conference. In addition to his coaching duties, Cottrell has assumed the role of associate director of athletics, after spending 15 years as director of athletics at HBU. He was one of the driving forces, working closely with HBU President Robert B. Sloan, in the Huskies transition to the NCAA. Last season, HBU enjoyed its most successful season since returning to Division I, going overall, earning the fourth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament with a 10-8 league mark. The Huskies also made the program s first NCAA postseason appearance since 1984, competing in the College Basketball Invitational. Senior guard Anthony Odunsi was a first-team all-conference selection, while sophomore center Josh Ibarra earned honorable mention. The Huskies went on a 10-game winning streak from Dec. 29 to Jan. 30, winning their first eight league contests. HBU then recorded its first conference tournament victory with a win over Southeastern Louisiana in the quarterfinals. In the season, Cottrell led the Huskies to a overall record and 7-11 mark in Southland play, doubling the team s overall win total from and winning five more league games. At the conclusion of the season, Odunsi was named Southland Conference honorable mention, the program s first player honor since joining the league, while Ibarra ranked 49th in the nation with 2.04 blocks per game, fifth among all freshmen. Ibarra also finished tied for 18th among freshmen and ninth in the Southland with 6.5 rebounds per game. Cottrell guided the Huskies to a record in and an appearance in the Great West Conference championship game to close out HBU s affiliation with the league. After starting the season 4-13 with his young roster, Cottrell s squad won 10 of its last 13 games, including an eight-game winning streak from Jan. 22- Feb. 25. Senior forward Art Bernardi earned first-team all-conference honors, senior guard Anthony Hill was named conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year and freshman guard Rob Lewis was voted the league s Sixth Man of the Year. Lewis, sophomore guard Marcel Smith and freshman guard Caleb Crayton also earned allconference honorable mention. The Huskies entered a new era during the season, as they began their first season of Great West Conference play. HBU went 9-3 in the league, finishing second during the regular season and advancing to the championship game of the conference tournament. Four players earned all-conference recognition, including first-team selections Gonzalez and Mario Flaherty. Gonzalez was the league s leading scorer and was named Newcomer of the Year. Gonzalez once again led the Great West in scoring during the season to earn first-team all-conference honors. He averaged 22.9 points per game, the sixthhighest scoring average in the nation and second-highest in HBU history. Michael Moss was named Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Year and was an allconference honorable mention pick after leading the lead with 2.8 steals per game, which was also the sixthhighest average nationally. 6 Coaching Staff During the season, Cottrell solidified his place as HBU s all-time winningest basketball coach as HBU defeated Campbell, 87-76, on Dec. 14, 2011, for the head coach s 400th career victory. Freshman guard Tyler Russell was named to the Great West All-Newcomer Team and was joined in all-conference honorable mention accolades by seniors Terry Bembry and Joe Latas. During the NAIA years, the Huskies won nine consecutive Red River Athletic Conference championships and competed in the NAIA national tournament 10 straight years. He built the basketball program into one of national prominence, perennially ranked in the NAIA Top 25, and finishing the season as one of the NAIA s top 10 teams six times. In , Cottrell led the Huskies to a 31-3 record and ended the season as the NAIA s top-ranked team, a ranking the Huskies held onto for the final five weeks of the season. After that history-making season, Cottrell was chosen as the Basketball Times NAIA National Coach of the Year. That season also boasted the Huskies as the national scoring and rebounding leader, scoring points per game and bettering their opponents by a margin of 13 rebounds per game. It was the second straight year the Huskies led the NAIA in rebounding and the third time in the previous eight seasons that HBU led the nation in scoring. HBU again led the nation in rebounding two years later, out-rebounding their opponents by 10.2 boards per game in In that season, Cottrell reached another milestone in his successful career, posting his 300th career win. Cottrell is known for his up-tempo offense and pressure defense, a philosophy he learned from his mentor, former Arkansas coach Nolan Richardson. As an assistant to Richardson at Arkansas, Cottrell helped coach the Razorbacks to two Southwest Conference championships and three trips to the NCAA tournament, culminating in the Hogs appearance at the 1990 NCAA Final Four where they lost to Duke in the semifinals. During Cottrell s tenure on the bench at Arkansas, the Razorbacks posted a record of Prior to joining Richardson s staff as an assistant coach, Cottrell spent a year as an assistant at North Dakota State College of Science before returning to Arkansas, his alma mater. Cottrell knows the Houston area, having graduated from Houston s Westbury High School. He returned to his native Arkansas to attain a degree in industrial engineering. While attending the University of Arkansas, Cottrell served as sports director for Fayetteville, Ark., ABC affiliate KTVP-TV before entering the coaching profession. When Cottrell was hired to lead the HBU program in the fall of 1990, Cottrell spent the second year of the Huskies self-imposed basketball hiatus putting the program together, recruiting and scheduling before beginning play in the season. The first season, the Huskies posted a 7-23 record. It was a season of growing pains for Cottrell and his young team. 7 Coaching Staff He had formed his base with freshmen, and although they took their lumps, it paid off in the long run. By the time those freshmen were seniors, they had made the playoffs three straight years and fell just three points shy of making it to the NAIA national tournament. After seven-and-a-half years as the HBU coach, Cottrell broke the school s coaching record for wins during the season, a record previously held by Gene Iba after an eight-year tenure. The Huskies had a school record 22-game winning streak and a school-best 26-6 record, only to be exceeded by the team with a 28-6 record. In , the Huskies again rewrote the record books with a 31-5 record. HBU tied the school record for wins and set a new low for losses with the team s 31-3 mark and broke the record for consecutive wins with 25. In , the Huskies saw a 60-game home winning streak come to an end, ending the nation s longest active home winning streak for a men s team. That team went on to finish the year with a 27-6 record. Cottrell was one of six members of the 2012 HBU Sports Hall of Honor class, recognizing his many contributions to the University as both a coach and administrator. They have two daughters, Scottlyn Rose, a junior manager for the men s basketball program at HBU, and Sydney-Anne, who is a freshman on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women s basketball team. He also serves as a deacon at Sugar Land Baptist Church. The Huskies had at least one basketball player receive All- America honors each season during a span of 13 seasons and Cottrell has coached athletes to All-America accolades 20 times, including the Basketball Times NAIA National Player of the Year, Rod Nealy. In addition, the Huskies have had recipients of All-Conference honors 39 times under Cottrell. In conjunction with the Huskies on-court success, Cottrell stresses excellence in the classroom as well. For his tenure, he holds an 85 percent graduation rate, as six players have received Academic All-America honors and 53 have garnered Academic All-Conference accolades. Cottrell was named Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year five times. He also has twice been awarded the Houston Area High School Boys Basketball Coaches College Coach of the Year and he received what he regards as one of his highest honors in the summer of 2006 when he was selected by USA Basketball to serve as a court coach for the gold-medal winning 18U USA team. With Cottrell at the helm as Athletics Director, the Huskies won 42 conference championships and had teams compete in national tournaments 35 times. HBU won eight Red River Athletic Conference all-sports awards in the nine-year history of the RRAC. HBU produced 99 All- America honorees, 65 academic All-America athletes and 241 All-Conference performers during his tenure. He was honored for his leadership as the 2001 recipient of the NAIA Region VI athletic director of the year award. 8 Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Steven Key 23rd season at HBU Alma mater: HBU, 1996 Steven Key is in his 23rd year as assistant basketball coach at HBU, the second-longest active tenure by an assistant coach in NCAA Division I. His duties include scheduling, recruiting, scouting, game preparation, and on-the-floor coaching. Key has been with head coach Ron Cottrell from the beginning, first as a manager, then as a student-assistant before assuming his current position, marking his 26th season overall with the Huskies. Last season, Key helped the Huskies to their most successful campaign since returning to Division I as they went overall and earned the fourth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament with a 10-8 league mark. HBU posted its first Southland Conference Tournament victory with a win over Southeastern Louisiana in the quarterfinals, then made the program s first NCAA postseason appearance since 1984 with a spot in the College Basketball Invitational. He was a key ingredient in the Huskies success of nine-straight conference championships and 10 consecutive NAIA national tournament appearances. He also was instrumental in the season s history-making success and No. 1 national ranking. Key served in the sports information department for ten years. He was the director for seven years and was associate director of athletic media relations for one year, before concentrating solely on his basketball duties. Key created the Huskies first athletic website in 1997 and received several awards from the NAIA for his website expertise. A three-sport letterman in basketball, baseball and football at Calvary Baptist High School in Savannah, Ga., Key came to HBU from Valdosta State University where he was the head manager for the Blazer basketball team. He has been involved in almost every facet of the athletic department since his arrival in The son and brother of Baptist ministers, Key is very active in his church, Kingsland Baptist in Katy. He is a member of Joshua House ABF and also teaches third grade Sunday school. A 1996 graduate of HBU with degrees in history and kinesiology, Key is married to the former Sherry Blakely, a four-year letterwinner for the HBU softball team from and 2006 inductee into HBU s Sports Hall of Honor. Sherry s No. 6 jersey was retired by the softball team on April 21, 2012, becoming the first student-athlete in HBU history to be so honored. They are the proud parents of 8-year-old Eiley Rowan. The Keys oldest daughter, Emma Claire, passed away May 15, 2010, shortly before her ninth birthday when the family was involved in a car accident while traveling in Louisiana. In her honor, the Key family established the Emma Key Hands and Feet Foundation in May of The HBU Alumni Association has also named the Emma Key Faithful Servant Award in rememberance of her. 9 In Memory of Emma Claire Key Emma Claire Key She had an unbelievable impact on people; Sunday school teachers, classroom teachers, her classmates at a very, very young age and I can t help but believe that happened because the Lord knew she wasn t going to be around very long. On May 15, 2010, while traveling on I-10 through Louisiana, HBU assistant basketball coach Steven Key and his family were involved in an accident, which claimed the life of his oldest daughter, Emma Claire Key, shortly before her ninth birthday. Recognized easily by the matching red hair of her parents, Steven and his wife, Sherry, a former standout third baseman for the Huskies softball team, Emma touched many lives, including the HBU basketball team and the entire HBU athletic department. Emma accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior early in her life and was excited to share her faith with everyone and devoted herself to love and service. While Emma s time was short, she made a lasting impact for the Kingdom of God and will not be forgotten. In 2014, the HBU Alumni Association commissioned the Emma Claire Key Faithful Servant Award to be given annually to the HBU student who best displays the selfless, giving spirit and bold witness for Christ that Emma embodied. Steven and Sherry Key were named the award s first recipients. Current senior HBU basketball manager Sebastian Huang was the recepient in During the season, the basketball team wore patches on its jerseys and the staff wore pins with the letter E in pink, Emma s favorite color. Coach Key now only wears pink ties during games in memory of his beloved daughter. 10 Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Jud Kinne Seventh season at HBU Alma mater: Albion, 2003 Jud Kinne is in his seventh season as assistant coach at HBU, serving as the program s recruiting coordinator. Last season, Kinne helped the Huskies to their most successful campaign since returning to Division I as they went overall and earned the fourth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament with a 10-8 league mark. HBU posted its first Southland Conference Tournament victory with a win over Southeastern Louisiana in the quarterfinals, then made the program s first NCAA postseason appearance since 1984 with a spot in the College Basketball Invitational. Kinne came to HBU after serving three seasons as associate head coach at Central Arizona College. He began his coaching career as a student assistant at Albion College, a highly successful Division III school in Albion, Mich., under Mike Turner, who won 527 games to rank among Division III s all-time leaders. Kinne was head coach at Marygrove College in Detroit for two years, coaching four all-americas, before assisting one season at Arizona State. He served under National Coach of the Year, Rob Evans, assisting with travel, oncampus recruiting, scouting and film exchange for the Sun Devils. He also spent one season at Centenary. 11 Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Keith Berard Seventh season at HBU Alma mater: Southern Utah, 1996 Keith Berard returned to the HBU men s basketball staff in Sept. 2016, after serving his first stint with the Huskies from Berard spent three years ( ) coaching at Episcopal High School in Houston, after one season ( ) as an assistant coach at Weber State in Ogden, Utah. During his five seasons at HBU, he assisted in on-the-floor coach, recruiting, academics and served as the camp coordinator for the Ron Cottrell Husky Basketball Camps. Prior to his first stint with the Huskies, Berard served as an assistant coach at Texas Southern, where he helped the Tigers to the Southwestern Athletic Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in A Houston native, who played at St. Thomas High School, Berard spent three seasons as assistant coach at College of Eastern Utah and one at Howard College. After playing two seasons at Weatherford College for former Husky Mark Osina, he finished his career with two seasons at Southern Utah from , helping lead the Thunderbirds to the American West Conference championship in 1995 and earning first-team all-conference and Team MVP honors. Berard ranks among SUU all-time top 10 in 3-point percentage, assists and steals. 12 Coaching Staff Director of Operations/Graduate Manager Luke Hillin First season at HBU Alma mater: Texas A&M, 2015 Luke Hillin enters his first season as Director of Basketball Operations at HBU. Prior to HBU, Hillin served in two different capacities as a student at Texas A&M. A Houston native, he served as student manager of the Aggie football team from , serving as head student manager his final two years. Hillin also worked as an operations intern with the men s basketball team across the season. Hillin graduated from TAMU with a degree in business administration in marketing with a minor in sports management in December Hillin is the son of Kim and Bobby Hillin, Jr. His father, Bobby, was a NASCAR driver for 20 years, once holding the record for being the youngest driver ever to win a Winston Cup Series event. Video Coordinator/Graduate Manager Reggie Gallant First season at HBU Alma mater: South Carolina, 2015 Reggie Gallant Jr. is entering his first season as video coordinator for the HBU basketball program. An Irmo, South Carolina, native, Gallant worked spent two seasons ( ) as the head manager for the University of South Carolina men s basketball program under head coach Frank Martin. Gallant earned his bachelor s degree with a triple major in management, economics and marketing and is currently pursuing a Master s degree in international business at HBU HBU Basketball

13 Support Staff Jeff Sutton Assistant Director, Athletic Media Relations Jeff Sutton is in his first year as assistant director of athletic media relations and third overall at HBU. He is responsible for the media relations efforts as the primary contact for men s basketball, men s and women s soccer, softball, men s and women s track & field and cross country. Prior to re-joining the HBU staff, Sutton worked for six-plus years on the University of Houston campus in a variety of roles, including stints in the Division of Advancement and the UH Alumni Association. During his employment at UH, he served as a gameday statistician for HBU home basketball and football games. From he was on the HBU staff as the associate director of athletic media relations for one year and one year as the director of athletic media relations. Prior to HBU, Sutton spent two years as the sports information director at his alma mater, Southwestern University, after one year as assistant sports information director at the University of Texas-Pan American. Sutton is a Houston native who earned his bachelor of arts degree from Southwestern University in He currently resides in Houston with his wife, Stephanie, and step-daughter, Aven. He is a member of College Sports Information Directors of America. René Peña Director of Olympic Athletic Performance René Peña is in his second year as the Director of Olympic Athletic Performance at HBU and his 19th as a strength coach. Peña came to HBU after spending four years as the strength and conditioning coordinator for the St. Louis Cardinals. While with the Cardinals, Peña was a member of the exciting 2011 World Series champions and also the 2013 National League champions. Peña s talent helped develop many Major League athletes while with the Cardinals and many Minor League championship titles as well. As a strength coach, Peña has worked with many athletes in the high school, collegiate, and professional level in both men s and women s sports. Chris Eaton Athletic Trainer Chris Eaton enters his third year as an assistant athletic trainer, working primarily with the men s basketball program. He came to HBU from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, where he was a graduate assistant athletic trainer from While at Southeastern, he worked with the football and baseball teams, both of which were Southland Conference champions. Eaton received his bachelor s degree in athletic training from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. At Purdue, he spent time working with the swimming and diving, football, and cheerleading programs. The native of Spiceland, Indiana, also spent a month in China, where he studied alternative practices in sports medicine HBU Basketball 13

Live statistics are also available for every home game. Lonnie King is in his third year as the play-by-play voice for HBU basketball and also serves as the play-by-play voice for Huskies football and will call the games for women s basketball during Southland Conference doubleheaders. He is in his fifth year with Legacy Sports Network, and has been broadcasting Houston-area sports for 12 years. Prior to his work with HBU, King provided play-by-play for LSN s production of high school football broadcasts on Comcast Sportsnet Houston. He has also worked LSN productions for Fox Sports Houston and Fox Sports Southwest of HBU, San Jacinto College and high school sports. He has also previously done work for UIL Radio state tournament broadcasts and ISP/IMG on their University of Houston baseball, Notre Dame University baseball and University of Washington women s basketball broadcasts. 39 Southland Conference Well into its sixth decade of service, the Southland Conference continues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebrates the academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions and approximately 4,200 student-athletes. Having commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2013, the Southland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 13 member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions in Dallas on March 15, 1963, the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well into the 21st Century. The successful transformation continues, as the Southland Conference welcomed four additional members in 2013: Abilene Christian University, Houston Baptist University, the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, and the University of New Orleans. In addition to its newest members, the Southland also consists of the University of Central Arkansas, Lamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. An original Southland member from , Abilene Christian rejoined the league as one of the most decorated athletic programs in NCAA history, and the addition of Houston Baptist, UIW and New Orleans gives the Southland a regular competitive presence in the key metropolitan areas of Houston, San Antonio and New Orleans. Southland cities encompass approximately 14 million people, and six of its television markets rank among the top 100 in the U.S. All told, the membership of the Southland encompasses nearly 140,000 current students and an alumni base of nearly 800,000. Famous alums from current Southland Conference schools include former CBS news anchor Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), NBA executive Joe Dumars (McNeese State), ABC news anchor Robin Roberts (Southeastern Louisiana), Major League Baseball star Wade Miley (Southeastern Louisiana), NBA legend Scottie Pippen (Central Arkansas), and track and field Olympians Kenta Bell (Northwestern State), and Bobby Morrow and Billy Olson (both Abilene Christian). Other notable alums from current members include Grammy Award-winning musicians Frank Ocean (New Orleans), Don Henley and Rodney Crowell (both Stephen F. Bum Phillips (Lamar and Stephen F. Austin). The Southland sponsors 17 full championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. The eight men s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women compete for nine championships in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball. The conference earns automatic qualification to NCAA championships in baseball, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s cross country, football, men s and women s golf, women s soccer, softball, men s and women s tennis, and volleyball. The Southland Bowling League, an affiliated Conference sport, originated in 2015, and four of its members filled out half of the eight-team bracket, with Stephen F. Austin advancing to the national title match. Continuing its tradition of innovation, the league launched the Southland Conference Television Network in the fall of 2008 and has broadcast more than 160 events. The network has expanded its reach to roughly 13 million households throughout Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma in recent years, and has also gained national viewership through ESPN3 and Fox College Sports. In its first seven years, the network has received recognition for its work, earning numerous College Sports Media and Telly Awards. The Southland Conference, in conjunction with the city of Frisco, Texas, and Hunt Sports Group, also serves as the host to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game in Frisco, which has been home to the conference headquarters since The game is played at Frisco s Toyota Stadium, and after a successful three-year run, the partnership was rewarded with a three-year renewal to serve as the national championship host site through the 2015 season. Men s basketball has experienced a tremendous amount of success during the Southland s 52 seasons. The league has sent four teams to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, as well as a squad to the NIT Final Four. Basketball stars Karl Malone, Joe Dumars, Jeff Foster, Dwight Bo Lamar, Andrew Toney and Mike Oliver played in the Southland Conference. The league saw a record five men s basketball teams reach the postseason in In women s basketball, the Southland also has its share of tradition with former member Louisiana-Monroe advancing to the 1985 NCAA Women s Final Four, and Stephen F. Austin sustaining itself as one of the most successful programs in the history of the sport. In 2014, the Ladyjacks became the fifth program in NCAA Division I history to record more than 950 wins. The conference continues to make great strides in the classroom. During the last decade, no other Division I conference has improved its Academic Progress Rate as well as the Southland Conference has. In fact, in , the Southland ranked 10th among the 31 Division I leagues in men s basketball APR. The academic progress the league has shown ultimately leads to higher graduation rates for our studentathletes.
