HBU men s basketball is set to open its campaign MEDIA this Wednesday at the McKale Center on the campus of the University of Arizona, facing the Wildcats at 8:00 p.m. central. The Huskies (0-0) come into the season with eight returners, including three starters, from last season with four of those returners having averaged double-figures in scoring. Senior Braxton Bonds has played in every game the last two seasons as the team s point guard, averaging 9.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.9 steals per game over 61 games. Bonds is joined by fellow seniors Josh Ibarra, Edward Hardt and Stephen O Suji. Ibarra was a senior last season but suffered a season-ending injury in the team s ninth game at UTSA and received a medical redshirt to return for another season. At the time of his injury last year, the HBU post player was averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds a game. Hardt, who joined the Huskies last season, closed out his junior year by averaging 11.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg over the final seven games of the season. Sophomore Ian DuBose returns after starting every game and averaging 12.5 ppg during his inaugural campaign while also pulling down 5.5 rpg and connecting on 35 percent from three-point range. DuBose is the Southland Conference s top returning sophomore scorer and rebounder, finishing in the league s top-25 in scoring and top-20 in rebounding as a freshman. Jalon Gates, a junior, knocked down 75 three-pointers as a sophomore for the ninth-highest single-season total in program history en route to an 11.5 ppg average. Arizona (0-0) lost all five starters from a squad that finished the year 27-8, won the Pac-12 tournament and fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament. In a pair of exhibition games, the Wildcats have been led by sophomore Brandon Randolph and freshman Brandon Williams. In a win over Western New Mexico, Randolph finished 6-of-8 from the field and was perfect from beyond the arc, making all five of his attempts. In a more tightly-contested game versus Chaminade, Williams led the way with 23 points while Randolph added 19. In the preseason Pac-12 media poll, the Wildcats were picked to finish fourth. Wednesday s game marks the second-ever meeting between the two programs with the previous meeting coming during the season with the Wildcats earning the win. HBU returns to Houston for its home-opener against Fordham inside Sharp Gym on Saturday, Nov. 10. 3 STORYLINES BONDS STEADY AT THE POINT Senior point guard Braxton Bonds is now in his third season with the Huskies after transferring to HBU as a sophomore and immediately stepping into a starting role. Bonds has appeared in every game and started all but one (Senior Night his sophomore season when a senior got the start in his place), averaging 32 minutes played per game over his first two seasons. As a sophomore, he scored 302 points, pulled down 156 rebounds and totaled 58 steals. As a junior, he scored 303 points, pulled down 155 rebounds and finished with 58 steals. Bonds saw his assists rise from 103 as a sophomore to 152 during his junior campaign. IBARRA MOVING UP THE ALL-TIME LISTS In his final season at HBU, senior Josh Ibarra is third in all-time field goal percentage (.604) and fourth in blocked shots (129). Additionally, he stands in 13th at 634 career rebounds, 67 away from entering the top-10 in program history. With 909 career points, Ibarra has a chance to close out his career with at least 1,000 points and 750 rebounds. He would become just the sixth player in program history to achieve that feat. The top all-time field goal percentage in program history is well within reach at.616, held by Terry Hairston. DUBOSE MAKES A STRONG FRESHMAN DEBUT Ian DuBose is the Southland Conference's lone returning sophomore to rank in the league's top-30 in scoring (12.5 ppg) and top-20 in rebounding (5.5 rpg) last season. As a freshman, DuBose started all 31 games and averaged nearly 29 minutes per game. DuBose led the team in scoring nine times during his inaugural campaign and was the team's top rebounder seven times. DuBose scored a career-high 23 points at Stephen F. Austin while enjoying one of the best free throw-shooting games in program history, connecting on 13-of-13 from the stripe. THE NORTH CAROLINA CONNECTION HBU has three sophomores and two freshmen on its roster with ties to the Tar Heel State. Guard Ian DuBose, a Durham, N.C. native, spent his high school career at the Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, N.C. Guard Oliver Lynch-Daniels hails from Chapel Hill, N.C. but attended Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. while forward Philip McKenzie grew up in Nassau, Bahamas but attended high school in the U.S. at the Cannon School in Concord, N.C. The freshmen, Qon Murphy and Benjamin Uloko, are from Cornelius, N.C. and Clemmons, N.C., respectively, with Murphy attending the Cannon School where he was a teammate of McKenzie and Uloko matriculating from West Forsyth High School. EXPERIENCED YOUTH HBU's roster features three sophomores in Ian DuBose, Philip McKenzie and Oliver Lynch-Daniels who combined to appear in 92 games with 35 starts as a trio of true freshman during the season. As a group, they averaged more than 20 minutes per game as rookies for the Huskies and all three are probably starters for Wednesday's game against the Wildcats. NEW FACES The Huskies roster this season features seven newcomers in the form of one NCAA Division I transfer, two junior college transfers, a sophomore walk-on and three true freshmen. Ryan Gomes transferred to HBU after two seasons at Mount St. Mary's where he appeared in 64 games over two seasons, including 15 starts as a sophomore. He will sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining. Jackson Stent is a junior transfer from Casper College while Ty Dalton comes from Colby Community College with three years of eligibility left. The Huskies signed Qon Murphy and Benjamin Uloko out of North Carolina in April and then added sophomore Nick Jones and freshman Andre Charles Jr. to the roster. COTTRELL AMONG THE LONGEST-TENURED HEACH COACHES IN THE NATION HBU head coach Ron Cottrell is in his 28th season at the helm of the Huskies' program. At the end of the season, his 26th, he held the eighth-longest tenure among all active Division I head coaches. With the retirements of Presbyterian's Gregg Nibert and Austin Peay's Dave Loos, Cottrell is now the sixth-longest tenured active coach in the nation. While Cottrell holds that sixth spot, assistant coach Steven Key is the longest-tenured Division I assistant coach in the nation. Key is in his 25th year as a part of the coaching staff and his 28th overall with the HBU basketball program. HUSKIES IN THE PROS HBU has eight former players actively playing professional basketball around the world. Alex Fountain ('17) recently completed his first year playing professionally with the Fraport Skyliners in Germany while Colter Lasher ('17) and Anthony Odunsi ('16) both played in Australia in 2018 with Lasher earning All-Star honors as a rookie. Ricmonds Vilde ('15) is currently playing in Japan while Art Bernardi ('13) is in his home country of Brazil. Emanuel Willis ('09) is in the offseason presently after playing this past season in China and Rod Nealy ('03) is playing in Portugal.
