Following a pair of games on back-to-back days, HBU gets MEDIA a much-needed day of rest on Monday before hitting the court in the final game of the 2K Classic Benefiting Wounded Warrior Project on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 6:00 p.m. CST against Virginia Tech at Cassell Coliseum. The Huskies (1-3) took a pair of tough losses over the past weekend in Nashville, Tenn. in the sub-regional round of the 2K Classic. On Saturday, HBU erased a 27-point deficit with 15 minutes to go, tying the game with five minutes on the clock before ultimately falling to Belmont on the Bruins home floor, Then, on Sunday, the Huskies trailed for a majority of the game but held a five-point lead with 15 seconds left before Detroit Mercy got a pair of threes in the final 10 seconds to send it to overtime where the Titans pulled away and defeated the Huskies, Senior center Josh Ibarra picked up 2K Classic Sub-Regional All-Tournament honors after posting double-doubles in both games on the weekend, capped by a 31 point, 13 rebound effort on Sunday. He is now averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds per game for the season. David Caraher is second in both scoring, with 16.8 points per game, and rebounding, averaging 6.5. A pair of guards have shown the ability to fill up the stat sheet so far this year as junior Braxton Bonds is averaging 9.8 points, 5.8 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. Ian DuBose, a freshman, is contributing 13.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.3 steals per outing. Sophomore Jalon Gates is coming off back-toback career-high performances in scoring after finishing with 15 against Belmont and then 18 against Detroit Mercy. Virginia Tech (3-1) boasts one of the top scoring offenses in the country, averaging points per game through the first four games of the year. The Hokies feature three players averaging at least 19 points a game with senior guard Justin Bibbs leading the way at 22.5 per outing. Ahmed Hill, a junior, is averaging 22 while freshman Nickeil Alexander-Walker is adding Chris Clarke is leading the Hokies on the boards, averaging 8.8 rebounds off the bench. Virginia Tech is shooting 57.3 percent from the floor and 47.6 percent from three this season and out-rebounding opponents by more than eight boards per contest. This marks the first-ever meeting between the Huskies and Hokies and is the first time HBU has ever played a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). HBU played current ACC member Pittsburgh during the campaign but at the time Pitt was a part of the Big East. 3 STORYLINES IBARRA'S CAREER DAY On Sunday (11/19/17), senior Josh Ibarra set a new career-best with 31 points in HBU's overtime loss to Detroit Mercy. It was the first 30-point game for Ibarra and was part of his second double-double in two days. He was 12-of-16 from the floor and 7-of-12 ffrom the stripe. He was named to the 2K Classic Sub Regional All-Tournament Team for his performance in Nashville. FRESHMEN MAKING AN IMPACT EARLY It was a freshman who led HBU in scoring in each of the season's first three games. Freshman David Caraher made a splash in the opener at Providence, leading all players with 19 points and seven rebounds and followed that up with a 20-point performance against Arlington Baptist. At Belmont, Ian DuBose poured in a team-best 19. Caraher is second on the team with 16.8 points per game while DuBose is third at 13.3 per outing. COTTRELL MOVING UP THE LONGEST-TENURED HEAD COACHING LIST HBU head coach Ron Cottrell is in his 27th season at the helm of the Huskies' program. At the end of the season, his 26th, he held the eighth-longest tenure among all active Division I head coaches. With the retirements of Presbyterian's Gregg Nibert and Austin Peay's Dave Loos, Cottrell is now the sixth-longest tenured active coach in the nation. This season, Cottrell will face off against two other coaches in the top-10. HBU will face Belmont and head coach Rick Byrd (32nd season) on Nov. 18 in Nashville, Tenn. and then Michigan State and head coach Tom Izzo (23rd season) on Dec. 18 in East Lansing, Mich. IBARRA MOVING UP THE ALL-TIME LISTS In his final season at HBU, senior Josh Ibarra is second in all-time field goal percentage (.611) and sixth in blocked shots (118). Additionally, he stands at 574 career rebounds, 31 away from entering the top-15 in program history. With 819 career points, Ibarra has a chance to close out his career with at least 1,000 points and 750 rebounds. He would become just the sixth player in program history to achieve that feat. The top all-time field goal percentage in program history is well within reach at.616, held by Terry Hairston. TOUGH SCHEDULING The Huskies closed the regular season with the 14th-most difficult non-conference strength of schedule in the nation facing a non-conference lineup that included Northwestern, Indiana, Marquette, Texas Tech, New Mexico, Rice and Saint Peter's. This season, the Huskies' non-conference slate includes five teams that reached the 2016 NCAA Tournament and eight total teams that played in a postseason tournament. HUSKIES IN THE PROS HBU has six former players actively playing professional basketball around the world. Alex Fountain ('17) is currently in his first year playing professionally with the Fraport Skyliners in Germany while Anthony Odunsi ('16) is playing in Caen, France.. Ricmonds Vilde ('15) is currently playing in Japan while Art Bernardi ('13) is in his home country of Brazil. Emanuel Lewis ('09) is in the offseason presently after playing this past season in China and Rod Nealy ('03) is playing in Portugal. BROTHERS IN THE BACKCOURT The Huskies roster features a pair of brothers in senior guard Will Gates Jr. and sophomore guard Jalon Gates, who had never played together on an organized team until coming to HBU. The Gates brothers are one of 30 pairs of brothers playing together at the NCAA Division I level. Will and Jalon are the sons of Will Gates Sr., who starred in the 1994 critically acclaimed documentary Hoop Dreams. Gates Sr. went on to play collegiately at Marquette. THE NORTH CAROLINA CONNECTION HBU has four freshmen on its roster with ties to North Carolina. Forward David Caraher is a Chapel Hill, N.C. native who played high school ball at Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, N.C. while guard Ian DuBose, a Durham, N.C. native, spent his high school career at the Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, N.C. Guard Oliver Lynch-Daniels also hails from Chapel Hill, N.C. but attended Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. Forward Philip McKenzie grew up in Nassau, Bahamas but attended high school in the U.S. at the Cannon School in Concord, N.C. HBU S RECORD WHEN... Those five seniors combined to start 73 games last season and accounted for more than 57 percent of the team's scoring. Second Team All-Conference selection Colter Lasher finished his career 15th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,246 career points and his 139 three-point field goals made places him eighth all-time. Reveal Chukwujekwu, also a Second Team All-SLC honoree, ended his career with 631 total rebounds, good for 13th-best in HBU history.
