Saturday's game will renew the oldest series for the Providence College Friars as they face the University of Rhode Island for the 111th time in the series history. The two teams have actually played 112 times as games in 1920 and 1921 are recognized by the NCAA as exhibition games (both games were won by the Rams). Providence leads the all-time series, When it is PC's home, the Friars are in 52 meetings. When it is a URI home game, PC is The Friars are 4-2 versus the Rams in games on a neutral court. Last season, Providence defeated the Rams, 61-49, on December 7 in URI's home game at the Providence Civic Center. Erron Maxey led the Friars with a doubledouble (12 points, 14 rebounds). Zach Marbury led URI with 19 points. The Friars had a season-best defensive effort as they held the Rams to 49 points. Rhode Island enters Saturday's game coming off a seven-day break in its schedule. In the Rams' most recent game, the team was defeated by Florida State, 86-71, on November 25 at the Great Alaska Shootout. Since opening the season with a win at home over Fairfield, the Rams (1-4) have lost their last four games. In addition to the loss to Florida State, URI also has been defeated by Tulsa (90-80), Missouri (70-60) and Alaska Anchorage (87-77). Rhode Island is led by 6-6 junior forward Tavorris Bell (Hempstead, N.Y.). Bell is averaging 23 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. URI's 6-3 junior guard Zach Marbury also is having a strong season, averaging 17.4 points per game. PC ON THE TV... Saturday's game is the Friars' first television game of the season. The game will be broadcast locally on WJAR-TV 10. Matt Devlin will handle the playby-play and Mark Plansky will be the analyst for the broadcast.

3 FRIARS DEFEAT FIU... The Friars earned their third win of the season with a victory against Florida International on November 29 at the Providence Civic Center. The Friars had their top shooting performance of the season as they made 28 of 54 field goal attempts (.519), including nine of 19 shots from three-point territory. Freshman Maris Laksa (Ventspils, Latvia) led the team with a career-high 17 points. Senior Erron Maxey (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) added seven points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Senior Karim Shabazz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) and junior John Linehan (Chester, Pa.) both missed the game with injuries. WELSH EARNS 100th WIN... Friar Head Coach Tim Welsh earned his 100th career victory when the Friars defeated Florida International, 74-55, on November 29. Welsh has recorded a mark in his six seasons as a head coach. Prior to coming to Providence, he coached the Iona Gaels for three seasons, posting a mark. In his first three seasons at Providence, Welsh has recorded a record. LAKSA RECORDS A CAREER HIGH... Junior Maris Laksa (Ventspils, Latvia) scored a team-high 17 points in 33 minutes in the Friars' win over Florida International on November 29. The 6-9 junior forward has been successful from the three-point arc this season. He is 7-13 (.538) from three-point territory in six games this season. MAXEY SCORES 1,000th POINT...Senior Erron Maxey (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) entered PC's game against Auburn on November 26 needing seven points to become the 35th player in Providence College history to score 1,000 or more career points. Maxey scored 14 points in the Friars' loss to Auburn and finished the game with 1,007 career points. Maxey, who has played 95 career games, has scored 1,014 points and is averaging 10.7 points per game in his career. In six games this season, Maxey is averaging 10.2 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game. On November 21, he recorded his first double-double of the season in PC's loss to Maine. He had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Last season, the 6-6 forward led the team in scoring, averaging 14.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game PROVIDENCE COLLEGE BASKETBALL PROVIDENCE ALL-TIME... In 74 seasons of Friar basketball, the team has posted a 1, (.611) mark... The team's all-time record at the Providence Civic Center is (.713). LINEHAN COULD RETURN... Junior John Linehan (Chester, Pa.) could return to the Friar lineup on Saturday against Rhode Island. He has missed the last five games with a strained hamstring. Linehan, who missed almost the entire season with a groin injury, strained his hamstring with 7:47 remaining in the first half of the Friars' win over Holy Cross on November 18. His condition is listed as day-to-day. In nine minutes of action in the Holy Cross game, Linehan scored four points and grabbed three rebounds. In , he led the BIG EAST in steals with 60 and was tied for fourth in the nation with a 3.3 thefts per game average. He ranks eighth all-time in steals at Providence College with 166 in 66 games. MILLS LEADS FRIARS IN SCORING... Sophomore Abdul Mills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is leading the Friars in scoring, averaging 12.6 points in the six games this season. In PC's most recent game, Mills registered his second-best offensive performance of the season with 16 points in the team's win over Florida International on November 29. He scored a game-high 19 points in the Friars' loss to the Maine Black Bears on November 21. He was one point shy of tying his career high of 20 points. Mills also had a game-high five assists against the University of Maine. SHABAZZ MAY RETURN FOR URI GAME... PC's 7-2 center Karim Shabazz injured his knee in PC's win over UMKC on November 24. The senior center has missed the last three games due to the injury. His condition is listed as day-to-day. He could return to the Friar lineup against Rhode Island on Saturday. In three games this season, he is averaging 5.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He posted his best game of the season against Maine on November 21 when he scored eight points and grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds. The season was his first year with the black and white. Shabazz to transferred to Providence in January 1999 from Florida State. In 21 games last season, Shabazz averaged 30.4 minutes, 10.4 points and 8.2 rebounds. The Far Rockaway, N.Y. native is the tallest player in the history of PC basketball. 4 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE BASKETBALL KABBA STEPS IN... Freshman Sheiku Kabba (Bronx, N.Y.) was pressed into action when junior John Linehan strained his hamstring with 7:47 remaining in the first half of the Friars' win against Holy Cross on November 18. Kabba responded with eight points, including a clutch three pointer with 2:30 remaining in the game to give the Friars a three-point lead. He played a team-high 33 minutes in PC's loss to Maine on November 21. He had nine points and three rebounds against the Black Bears. Since Linehan's injury, Kabba has started all five games for the Friars. He is averaging 6.7 points and 3.2 assists per game this season. FRIARS POST 1-2 MARK IN ENERGIA SYSTEMS TOURNAMENT... The Friars posted a 1-2 record in the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. on November On Friday, Providence defeated UMKC, 60-53, in the first round of the Tournament at the Municipal Auditorium. The Friars were led by the strong play of freshman forward Chris Anrin (Varmdo, Sweden). Anrin recorded 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds. He also was four of seven from behind the threepoint arc. Sophomore guard Abdul Mills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also was impressive for the Friars. Mills scored 13 points in 33 minutes of action. The following afternoon, PC was defeated by Creighton, 63-51, in the second round of the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament. Sophomore Romauld Augustin (Montreal, Quebec) was PC's top scorer with 13 points in 32 minutes. Freshman Marcus Douthit (Syracuse, N.Y.) contributed with 10 rebounds and nine points in the loss. Sophomore Abdul Mills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also added 10 points and four assists. On the final day of the Tournament, the Friars were defeated by Auburn, 80-69, on November 26. For the second consecutive game, Augustin led the PC with 15 points on a six for eight shooting performance. Freshman forward Maris Laksa (Ventspils, Latvia) also added 15 points in the loss. Senior forward Erron Maxey (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) scored 14 points and went over the 1,000-career point mark in his 94th game at Providence. FRIARS CAPTURE ROAD OPENER... On November 24, PC earned a win over UMKC which gave the Friars a win in their first road game of the season. Last year, PC won its road opener with a victory over American University of Puerto Rico. In road games during the season, Providence posted a 3-7 mark. FRIARS IN IN-SEASON TOURNA- MENTS... After posting a 1-2 record at the Energia Systems Thanksgiving Tournament, the Friars have now recorded a (.558) mark all-time in in-season Tournaments. Last year, PC recorded a 1-2 record at the Puerto Rico Shootout in Bayonee, Puerto Rico. The last time Providence won an in-season tournament was during the season when the Friars defeated Notre Dame to win the Fleet Classic in Providence, R.I. FRIARS SIGN TWO RECRUITS... Friar Head Coach Tim Welsh has two studentathletes committed to attend Providence College in September Rob Sanders of New London, Connecticut and Garnett Thompson of Islip, New York have signed national letters of intent to attend Providence College. Sanders, a 6-foot-6-inch, 205-pound forward is attending St. Thomas More Prep School in Connecticut. Last year, he averaged 20 points per game at New London High School and was named Eastern Connecticut Player of the Year. Thompson, a 6-foot-9-inch, 215-pound forward is currently attending Suffolk Community College in New York. Prior to attending Suffolk, Thompson played at Central Islip High School. FRIAR NEWCOMERS... The Friars have four newcomers on the roster this season. Head Coach Tim Welsh has added freshmen Chris Anrin (Varmdo, Sweden), Marcus Douthit (Syracuse, N.Y.), Sheiku Kabba (Bronx, N.Y.) and Maris Laksa (Ventspils, Latvia). Anrin, a 6-7 forward, averaged 10.5 points per game in for Alvik in Sweden's A League. Douthit averaged 18 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks per game in for St. Thomas Aquinas High School in New Britain, Conn. Kabba played AAU basketball in for the Gauchos in New York City. Laksa averaged 14 points per game at the World Junior Championships in Portugal in FRIARS ON THE RADIO/INTERNET... All the Friar action this season can be heard on 630 WPRO with John Rooke and former Friar Joe Hassett calling all the action. It will mark the 12th season the two have teamed up to broadcast Friar basketball.
