On Tuesday, January 16, the Friars will play the University of Miami Hurricanes at the Providence Civic Center. The Friars and the Hurricanes have met 21 times in the all-time series with Providence holding a 12-9 lead. PC has posted a 6-4 mark all-time at home against Miami, a 5-5 record at Miami and 1-0 record on neutral courts against the Hurricanes. The two teams first met on December 8, 1962 when the Hurricanes earned an win at Providence. In the only meeting between the two teams last season, PC earned a win at Miami on February 16, The last time Miami defeated PC was on February 13, 1999 when the Hurricanes won, 69-65, at Providence. Miami has won three out of the last five meetings. PC is 5-5 in the last 10 games versus the Hurricanes. PC has posted an 8-7 mark all-time against Miami in BIG EAST play. SCOUTING THE HURRICANES... Miami enter Tuesday's game with an 8-7 mark overall and a 0-4 record in BIG EAST play. In their most recent game, Boston College defeated the Hurricanes, 82-73, at Chestnut Hill, Mass. Miami's other losses in BIG EAST play have been against Virginia Tech (85-74), Boston College (73-72) and Pittsburgh (62-51). The Hurricanes are led by freshman Darius Rice (Jackson, Miss.) who is averaging 15.1 points per game. Junior forward John Salmons (Philadelphia, Pa.) also is having a strong season, averaging 13.3 points per game. He is leading the team in rebounding, averaging 6.5 boards per game. Tuesday's game will mark Miami Coach Perry Clark's first game ever against Providence. FRIARS 7-1 AT THE CIVIC CENTER... The Friars have recorded a 7-1 mark at the Providence Civic Center this season. PC opened the season with a win over Holy Cross on November 18. The Friars lost their only home game on November 21 with a defeat to Maine. In PC's most recent victory at the Civic Center, the Friars defeated Connecticut, 81-68, on January 13.

3 PROVIDENCE COLLEGE BASKETBALL FRIARS DEFEAT NO. 13 UCONN... On January 13, Providence ended a five-game losing streak against Connecticut with an victory at the Providence Civic Center. The win over the 13th-ranked Huskies gave the Friars their first victory against a ranked opponent since PC upset No. 18 Syracuse on January 12, The win over UConn also marked PC's first victory over a top-20 opponent at home since the Friars defeated No. 8 Purdue, 87-82, on December 27, All five Friar starters scored in double figures, including junior John Linehan (Chester, Pa.) who had a career-high 19 points. Linehan was 3-4 from behind the three-point line, 8-8 from the free throw line and recorded five steals in the win. Senior Karim Shabazz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) and senior Erron Maxey (Lake Elsinore, Pa.) each had 12 points while sophomore Romuald Augustin (Montreal, Quebec) had 10 points. Sophomore Abdul Mills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had another strong game for PC, scoring all of his 14 points in the second half. DEFENSE IS THE KEY... PC has posted a 10-1 mark this season when opponents have scored 75 or fewer points in a game. The Friars have not allowed an opponent to shoot 50 percent or more from the floor in a game this season. The Friars rank first overall in the BIG EAST in three-point field goal percentage defense (.295) and second overall in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage defense (.389). FRIARS SHOOT FOR THREE... Providence College has been successful this season from behind the three-point arc. PC is 9-2 when the team has made 40 percent or more of its three-point attempts in a game. The Friars have made 118 of 295 (.400) attempts from three-point territory. The Friars rank second overall in the BIG EAST at.400 percent in three-point shooting and second in conference play, making 26 of their 63 attempts (.413). Sophomore Romuald Augustin (Montreal, Quebec) has been the team's most prolific three-point shooter, connecting on 24 of his 53 attempts (.453). FRIARS VS. RANKED TEAMS... PC's win over 13th-ranked Connecticut on January 13 was the Friars' first victory against a ranked opponent since PC upset No. 18 Syracuse on January 12, The win over UConn also marked PC's first victory over a top-20 opponent at home since the Friars defeated No. 8 Purdue, 87-82, on December 27, The Friars have recorded a 1-1 mark this season against ranked teams. PC's game against nationally ranked Seton Hall (No. 11/11) on January 3 was the Friars' first contest this season against a ranked team. Last season, the Friars posted a 0-3 record against ranked teams with losses to No. 3/2 Michigan State (82-58), No. 6/6 Connecticut (64-50) and No. 4/4 Syracuse (74-58). FRIARS FORCE TURNOVERS... PC has posted a 6-0 mark this season when opponents have committed 20 or more turnovers in a game. In PC's last two games, the team has forced a combined 45 turnovers in wins over Villanova and Connecticut. FRIARS MATCH WIN TOTAL AL... With Providence's victory over No. 13 Connecticut on January 13, the Friars matched their entire win total for the season. PC has posted an 11-4 mark this season while the squad recorded an record last year. FRIARS TOUGH ON THE ROAD... The Friars have posted a 4-1 mark this season in road games. On January 9, the Friars defeated Villanova, 76-67, for their fourth win of the season on the road. PC's loss to Seton Hall on January 3 was the team's first loss this season in a road game. On November 24, PC earned a win over UMKC in Kansas City, Mo. PC improved to 2-0 in road games with an victory over Massachusetts on December 7 at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. On December 11, the Friars earned their third road victory with a win at George Washington. In road games last year, Providence posted a 3-7 mark. A TOTAL TEAM EFFORT... One of the trademarks of the Friars this season has been that a different player has led the team in scoring in almost every victory. Seven different players have led the team in scoring in the squad's 11 wins this season. The Friars do not have a player averaging more than 13 points a game this season. STARTING LINEUP... 4 PROVIDENCE ALL-TIME... In 74 seasons of Friar basketball, the team has posted a 1, (.612) mark. The team's all-time record at the Providence Civic Center is (.716). LINEHAN NAMED BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK... Junior John Linehan (Chester, Pa.) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, January 15. Linehan was named Player of the Week after leading the Friars to two BIG EAST wins last week with his impressive defense. On January 9, Linehan had six steals, six assists and six rebounds in PC's win at Villanova on January 9. On January 13, the 5-9 guard scored a career-high 19 points and registered five steals as the Friars upset 13thranked Connecticut at the Providence Civic Center. In the win over UConn, Linehan was an impressive 3-4 from behind the threepoint line and 8-8 from the free-throw line. In the two games last week, Linehan averaged 12 points, 4.5 assists, 5.5 steals and four rebounds. He also was an impressive from the free-throw line in the two games. Linehan leads the team in steals with 34 in 10 games this season. Linehan ranks fourth all-time in steals at Providence College with 199 in 75 games. Linehan has been an integral part of the Friars' success this season. With Linehan in the lineup, the Friars have posted an impressive 9-1 record. Linehan missed five games this season with a hamstring injury which he suffered in the first game. The Friars posted a 2-3 record without Linehan. He is fifth on the team in scoring this season, averaging 9.3 points per game. In , he led the BIG EAST in steals with 60 and was tied for fourth in the nation with a 3.3 thefts per game average. AUGUSTIN HAS A PRODUCTIVE WEEK... Sophomore Romuald Augustin (Montreal, Quebec) helped lead the Friars to two wins last week. On January 9, he registered season highs in points (21), three pointers (five), assists (five) and minutes played (35) while leading the Friars to a win over Villanova. On January 13, the 6-7 sophomore forward scored 10 points in 27 minutes in the Friars' victory against 13thranked Connecticut. In the two games last week, Augustin averaged 15.5 points. Augustin has scored 10 or more points in eight of the team's 15 games. He has led the team or has been tied for the team lead in scoring in five of the squad's 15 games. Augustin is third on the team in scoring this season, averaging 9.7 points per game. He PROVIDENCE COLLEGE BASKETBALL is the team's top three-point shooter, connecting on 24 of his 53 attempts (.453). MILLS SHINES IN SECOND HALF... Sophomore Abdul Mills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) has saved his best effort for the second half of PC's last two games. On January 9, he scored all 13 of his points in the second half in PC's win over Villanova. On January 13, Mills registered all 14 of his points in the final 20 minutes of play of the Friars' win against Connecticut. Mills has been one of the Friars' most consistent scorers this season, recording double figures in 11 of the team's 15 games. The sophomore guard leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.4 points per game. Mills recorded a career high with 25 points in PC's win against George Washington on December 11. On December 7, Mills had 16 points in the Friars' win against UMass. He scored 19 points in the Friars' loss to the Maine Black Bears on November 21. On November 29, Mills registered 16 points against FIU. LAKSA HAVING STRONG ROOKIE YEAR... Freshman Maris Laksa (Ventspils, Latvia) has been one of the Friars' top freshmen this season. He is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 9.5 points per game. On January 9, he had 10 points in the Friars' win over Villanova. Laksa has scored in double figures in four of the team's last seven games. He led the Friars to a win against Boston University on December 28 at the Providence Civic Center. In the win, Laksa had a career-best game for the Friars as he scored 24 points and was 4-4 from behind the three-point line (7-8 from the floor) and was 6-6 from the foul line. Laksa scored 11 points and was 3-5 from behind the three-point line in the Friars' win over Brown on December 23. He registered 18 points in PC's win against George Washington on December 11. Laksa was 3-5 from behind the three-point line and shot 3-3 from the free-throw line. He had 17 points in 33 minutes of action in the Friars' win against Florida International on November 29. DOUTHIT AT T CENTER... Freshman center Marcus Douthit (Syracuse, N.Y.) is second on the team in blocks with 27. Douthit scored 12 points and recorded eight rebounds in PC's loss to 11th-ranked Seton Hall on January 3. On December 26, Douthit was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. 5 Rookie of the Week since Sean Connolly received the accolade on November 30, Douthit earned the honor after he led the Friars to a win over cross-town rival Brown on December 23. The 6-10 rookie center recorded career highs in points (22), rebounds (11) and field goals (11-14) while registering his first doubledouble. This season, he is averaging 7.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. On December 30, Douthit scored four points and made a career-high five blocks in PC's win against South Carolina. On December 2, the rookie scored 14 points in the Friars' win over Rhode Island. MILLS SCORES Sophomore Abdul Mills (Brooklyn, N.Y.) registered 25 points in the Friars' win against George Washington on December 11. It marked the highest single-game effort by a Friar since Donta Wade had 38 points against Notre Dame on February 23, It also was the first game this season that a Friar had scored 20 or more points. SHABAZZ PICKS IT UP IN THE BIG EAST... PC's 7-2 center Karim Shabazz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) has improved his play since the start of the BIG EAST Conference play. In PC's three BIG EAST games this season, Shabazz is averaging 10.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. In the Friars' most recent game, Shabazz had 12 points and seven rebounds in the team's win against Connecticut. He leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.1 boards per game. In PC's win against South Carolina on December 30, Shabazz had a game-high nine rebounds. Shabazz recorded season highs in points (14) and rebounds (13) while recording his first doubledouble of the season in the Friars' win over George Washington on December 11. He scored 10 points and registered eight rebounds in PC's win against Massachusetts on December 7. It was Shabazz's second strong performance since returning to the lineup from a knee injury. On December 2, he returned to the PC lineup against the URI Rams and tied his career high with 10 blocks. Shabazz had 10 blocks in PC's win over Long Island on December 27, Shabazz had injured his knee in PC's win over UMKC on November 24. The senior center missed three games due to the injury. In 12 games this season, he is averaging 7.7 points per game. The season was his first year with the black and white PROVIDENCE COLLEGE BASKETBALL Shabazz transferred to Providence in January 1999 from Florida State. The Far Rockaway, N.Y. native is the tallest player in the history of PC basketball. MAXEY SECOND ON THE TEAM... Senior Erron Maxey (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) is second on the team in scoring (10.9 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg). Maxey scored 12 points and registered five rebounds in PC's win against Connecticut on January 13. It marked the ninth game this season that Maxey scored 10 or more points. On December 30, Maxey was one of only two Friars to score in double figures in the Friars' win against South Carolina. He recorded his second double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds) of the season on December 7 when he led the Friars to an victory against Massachusetts. Maxey scored a season-high 19 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in 24 minutes of action in the Friars' win over in-state rival Rhode Island on December 2. Maxey became the 35th player in Providence College history to record 1,000 points when he scored 14 points in PC's loss to Auburn on November 26. He has played in 104 career games and has scored 1,117 points. On November 21, he recorded his first double-double of the season in PC's loss to Maine. He had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Last season, Maxey led the team in scoring, averaging 14.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. FRIARS IN NON-CONFERENCE AC- TION... PC's win over South Carolina on December 30 was the team's final non-conference game until the Friars play Binghamton on February 22. The Friars have posted a 9-3 mark in non-conference action this season. PC WINS SEVEN STRAIGHT... On January 3, Seton Hall defeated the Friars, 87-80, as the team suffered its first loss since an defeat to Auburn on November 26. On December 30, PC defeated SEC foe South Carolina, 60-55, to earn its seventh consecutive win. It marked the first time Providence College had won seven straight games since the season. FRIARS WIN NINE GAMES... On December 30, PC defeated South Carolina, 60-55, to win its seventh consecutive game and its ninth game of the season. The last time PC earned nine wins before New Year's Day was the season when the Friars improved to 9-3 after a victory over Texas on December 31, FRIARS PERFECT IN DECEMBER... The Providence College Friars posted a 6-0 mark in the month of December. The last time PC was undefeated in the month of December was the season when the Friars registered a 7-0 mark. In PC's six games in December, the team averaged 86 points per game. PC scored 95 points (URI), 85 points (UMass), 93 points (George Washington), 110 points (Brown), 73 points (Boston University) and 60 points (South Carolina) in each of its games in December. In the squad's first six games of the season, PC averaged 69 points per game and recorded a 3-3 mark. SEVEN FRIARS REACH DOUBLE DIGITS IN SCORING... In PC's victory over the Brown Bears on December 23, seven Friars reached double figures in scoring. PC was led by freshman Marcus Douthit (Syracuse, N.Y.) who had a game-high 22 points. The six other Friars to reach double figures were sophomore Romuald Augustin of Montreal, Quebec (15 points), senior Erron Maxey of Lake Elsinore, Calif. (15 points), sophomore Abdul Mills of Brooklyn, N.Y. (11 points), freshman Sheiku Kabba of Bronx, N.Y. (13 points), freshman Chris Anrin of Varmdo, Sweden (12 points) and freshman Maris Laksa of Ventspils, Latvia (11 points). SCHNURR OUT,, TRAUGOTT IN... PC junior forward Brian Schnurr (Fairfield, Conn.) is no longer on the Friar roster. Schnurr will participate in a study-abroad program during the second semester in Australia. PC sophomore Stephen Traugott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) has been added to the Friar lineup. Traugott, a 1999 graduate of Iona Prep, averaged 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists per game in his senior season at Iona Prep. Traugott played two minutes in PC's win over Brown on December 23 - his first game ever in a Friar uniform. He scored one point and grabbed one rebound in his Friar debut. The 6-5, 195-pound forward wears number 25. PC AND CIVIC CENTER ANNOUNCE LONG-TERM DEAL... On Saturday, December 23 it was announced that Providence College and the Providence Civic Center reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension. The new contract ensures

ON THE BLOCKS... Senior Karim Shabazz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) had 10 of the Friars' 14 blocked shots in PC's win over Rhode Island on December 2. In addition to Shabazz's 10 blocks, freshman Marcus Douthit (Syracuse, N.Y.) registered three blocks and sophomore Romuald Augustin (Montreal, Quebec) recorded one swat in the win. The team's 14 blocks tied the Friars' all-time record for blocks in a game. The mark of 14 blocks in a game was established twice by the Friars. On December 14, 1974, PC had 14 blocks against Syracuse and the team tied the mark versus Jacksonville on January 11, Shabazz's 10 blocks versus URI tied his personal best which he set against Long Island on December 27, The PC individual single-game record for blocked shots is 12 established by Marvin Barnes against Buffalo on December 8, FRIARS SIGN TWO RECRUITS... Friar Head Coach Tim Welsh has two studentathletes committed to attend Providence College in September Rob Sanders of New London, Connecticut and Garnett Thompson of Islip, New York have signed national letters of intent to attend Providence College. Sanders, a 6-foot-6-inch, 205- pound forward is attending St. Thomas More Prep School in Connecticut. Last year, he averaged 20 points per game at New London High School and was named Eastern Connecticut Player of the Year. Thompson, a 6-foot-9-inch, 215-pound forward is currently attending Suffolk Community College in New York. Prior to attending Suffolk, Thompson played at Central Islip High School. TALE OF TWO HALVES VES... In the Friars' win over Massachusetts on December 7, the PC's shooting improved significantly in the second half. In the first 20 minutes of action, PC shot (35.5 percent). In the second half, the Friars were (54.8 percent) from the field. WELSH EARNS 100th WIN... Friar Head Coach Tim Welsh earned his 100th career victory when the Friars defeated Florida International, 74-55, on November 29. Welsh now has recorded a mark in his six seasons as a head coach. Prior to coming to Providence, he coached the Iona Gaels for three seasons, posting a mark. In his three seasons at Providence, Welsh has registered a record. FRIARS ON THE RADIO/INTERNET... All the Friar action this season can be heard on 630 WPRO with John Rooke and former Friar Joe Hassett calling all the action. It is the 12th season the two have teamed up to broadcast Friar basketball. The games also can be heard on the world wide web at FRIARS ON TELEVISION... Fourteen Friar games can be seen this season on TV. The Friars tipped off their television schedule against the University of Rhode Island on December 2 on WJAR. The Friars will have two games shown nationally. The January 23 game against Pittsburgh will be televised on ESPN2 and the February 17 game at Boston College will be televised on ESPN. PC also will have six games televised on NESN, three games on WJAR and three games on WPXQ. FRIAR FRESHMEN... The Friars have four freshmen on the roster this season.
