The Knights last beat the Cobbers in 1992 and hold only five victories in the 24 previous meetings with their conference foes from the far north. Last year the Knights had their best chance in recent memory, falling but having a chance in the final minutes to perhaps score a game-tying touchdown. The Knights snapped a three-game losing streak last week by trouncing Augsburg College, It marked Carleton's largest margin of victory in a conference game in 10 seasons. The Cobbers, meanwhile, suffered their second straight loss by falling at home to St. Thomas. Concordia, which qualified for the NCAA Playoffs each of the past two seasons and entered the season nationally ranked, must win out to finish with a.500 record. CASPERS BAGS CAREER COMPLETIONS RECORD Senior Darren Caspers (Bemidji, Minn.) completed 15-of-28 passing for 195 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions in the Knights 37-7 win over Augsburg. The completion total moved his career total to 406, as he surpassed Jon Groteboer s 02 career record of 401. Caspers has passed for 1,557 yards this season and is on track to become only the second quarterback in Carleton history to surpass the 2,000-yard mark in a single season. He is tied for third on the single-season points scored list at Carleton with 72, 22 behind Skye Flanagan's 1996 total. He ranks 12th in Division III with 10.3 points scored per game, which also ranks him first in the MIAC. Jackson has scored 10 rushing touchdowns, one receiving touchdown and one via a kick return this season. In his career he has 20 rushing scores, two via receiving, one on a punt return and four via kick returns. FOSS CONTINUES MOVE UP TACKLES CHART Senior Randy Foss (Hastings, Minn.) had his best game of the season against Augsburg. He tallied a season-high 12 tackles and forced a key fumble as Carleton held Augsburg to 56 yards of total offense in the first half. With the Knights leading 23-7 but Augsburg threatening early in the fourth, Foss forced the fumble that was recovered by a teammate and returned 54 yards to the Auggie 26. 3 LAST TIME OUT: KNIGHTS END LOSING SKID, DOMINATE AUGGIES R.J. Jackson scored three touchdowns, moving within two scores of breaking the Carleton single-season touchdown record, and Darren Caspers became the Knights alltime completions leader as Carleton blew past Augsburg, The win snapped Carleton s (4-3, 2-3 MIAC) three-game losing streak as the Auggies lost for the 11th straight time. Jackson scored on runs of 6, 2 and 4 yards, giving him 12 touchdowns on the season and leaving him one shy of Jim Bradford s 1990 record of 13 touchdowns. Caspers, meanwhile, completed 15-of-28 passing for 195 and one touchdown with no interceptions. The completion total moved his career total to 406, as he surpassed Jon Groteboer s 02 career record of 401. The Knights opened and closed the first half with a bang. Sophomore Chris Gardner (Gaylord, Minn./Sibley Co. East) took the opening kickoff back 85 yards for a score, his first return for a touchdown in his career. At the end of the half, Augsburg drove to the Carleton 30-yard line but the Knights defense held and Mike Morrissey (Jr./Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) sacked Augsburg quarterback Jordan Berg on fourth down. With only 52 seconds left, the Knights offense drove 55 yards in eight plays, as Caspers hit Matt Frank from 13 yards out for the secore with three second left. Caspers was 5-for-8 for 55 yards on the drive. In between the opening kickoff and the final play of the first half, the Knights dominated the Auggies, outgaining the hosts in total offensive yards. The Auggies managed to cross midfield only twice in the half as the Knights led 17-0 at the break. Carleton scored early in the second quarter, as Jackson slashed in from six yards to cap a 7-play, 42 yard drive, with Jackson tallying 27 of the 42 yards on the drive. Tim Kane (So./Hopkins, Minn.) booted a 35-yard field goal with 3:34 left in the half after Andy Krominga (Sr./Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) recovered a fumble on a punt return at the Augsburg 33-yard line. The Auggies finally got on the board, scoring on the first drive of the second half as Berg hit Andrew Neumann from 22 yards. The Auggies looked to be going in for another score early in the fourth when Randy Foss forced a fumble that Nick Cesarek (So./Eagan, Minn./Eastview) recovered and nearly returned for a score, racing 54 yards to the Auggies 26. Caspers hit Mike Kootsikas for 24 yards and Jackson picked up the final two and the Knights were in control, Another takeaway by the Knight defense set up Carleton s final score. Mike Gravelle (Sr./Austin, Minn.) picked off Berg at the Auggie 43, and after Caspers hit Frank for 26 yards down the doorstep, Jackson scored for the third time on the day from four yards. Carleton outgained the Auggies, , in total offense. Jackson himself tallied 143 all-purpose yards, rushing for 93 yards on only 18 carries and adding 50 yards receiving on five catches. Frank tallied five grabs for 80 yards. Foss paced the defense with 12 tackles and the forced fumble and Cesarek and James Colbenson (Jr./Rushford, Minn./Rushford- Peterson) added nine stops. KOOTSIKAS, TOPEFF KEEP KNIGHT TREND AS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Carleton senior offensive tackle Matt Topeff (Andover, Minn./Blaine) and senior free safety Mike Kootsikas (Rosemount, Minn.) were named the MIAC s offensive and defensive players of the week after Carleton's upset of Bethel. Topeff, a former tight end, caught a key pass that set up Carleton s first touchdown and then threw the eventual game-winning touchdown pass of 53 yards as Carleton upset Bethel, With the Knights trailing, 7-3, midway through the second quarter, Topeff took a lateral from Darren Caspers, rumbling down to the 2-yard line. Carleton eventually scored to take a 10-7 at halftime. With the Knights trailing midway through the fourth quarter, Topeff took a lateral from Caspers and hit wide receiver Matt Frank for a 53-yard TD. Topeff was part of an offensive effort that had only one turnover. Kootsikas, who had started his previous 22 career games at wide receiver, tallied six tackles, two pass breakups and an interception in his second career start at free safety. Kootsikas, who didn t play football his rookie season, ranks in Carleton s all-time top 10 in receptions and receiving yardage, moved over to defense this season to aid a young secondary and responded with a huge game this week. He broke up a key third-down pass on Bethel s last drive from the Carleton 25-yard line and intercepted a pass late in the first half, allowing Carleton to try a 48-yard field goal at the end of the half. The Knights defense held Bethel to 233 total yards and only 77 yards rushing, including 36 yards on 19 CARLETON IN MIAC RANKINGS Scoring Offense 1. St. Olaf Carleton Concordia 15.7 Scoring Defense 1. Kootsikas was an all-metro defensive back during his prep career at Rosemount High School. CASPERS MIAC'S CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior Darren Caspers was named the conference co-offensive player of the week after throwing for a career-high five touchdowns in Carleton's victory over Macalester. Caspers finished the game 10-of-15 for 248 yards with scoring passes of 5, 19, 7, 72 and 60 yards. All of his action came in the first half, as the Knights rolled to a 38-0 halftime lead. He posted what is believed to be a Carleton school-record single-game efficiency rating of His performance helped lead Carleton to a 52-0 win over the Scots and retain the Book of Knowledge trophy for the fourth consecutive year. RAMLER'S COACHING START ONE OF BEST EVER AT CARLETON A search of the Carleton football archives by student assistant Adam Rossow '07 revealed that rookie head coach Kurt Ramler's 3-0 start is the best in 72 years. George Gibson started his Carleton 5-0 in 1934 and led the Knights to a 6-1 overall record that season. JACKSON SETS SCHOOL RECORD WITH 6 TDS IN VICTORY Junior running back R.J. Jackson had an unbelievable record-setting performance in Carleton s season opener, scoring six touchdowns in the first half in leading the Knights past UM-Morris, Jackson set a new Carleton single-game record by scoring six touchdowns (on only 12 touches) in leading Carleton to a victory in new head coach Kurt Ramler s debut. Jackson s scores came on touchdown runs of 11, 30, 2 and 1 yards, a 46-yard screen pass and a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He broke the previous Carleton record of five touchdowns and 30 points scored in one game, held jointly by Skye Flanagan 98, set against St. Thomas in 1996, and Jim Bradford 92, set against Gustavus in Jackson played only one series in the second half as Carleton scored on its first five possessions of the game in taking a 41-7 lead at halftime. For the game he tallied 69 yards rushing on only 10 carries, 46 yards receiving and 93 yards on the kickoff return, leaving him with 208 all-purpose yards. He was named the MIAC offensive player of the week and to D3Football.com's national "Team of the Week." LAST TIME, SEPT. 24, 2005: KNIGHTS NEARLY PULL UPSET OF COBBERS Mike Kootsikas and R.J. Jackson each scored two touchdowns and the Knights defense forced three turnovers, but Carleton came up just short, falling to 16th ranked Concordia- Moorhead, Jackson racked up 227 total yards, including an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Kevin Williamson started the scoring for Concordia, as he ran in from one yard out just two minutes into the game. It was his first of three touchdowns on the day. The point after attempt was blocked, making the score 6-0 Concordia. The Knights responded quickly, as Jackson took a screen pass and raced 50 yards to set up a Kootsikas s first touchdown catch of the game. Concordia then scored two straight touchdowns, but the Knights defense stopped both two-point conversion attempts to make the score 18-7 five seconds into the second quarter. In past seasons this may have been the time when the Knights folded, allowing their nationally-ranked opponent to win in a rout. However, Jackson made sure that this season would be different, returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to spark his teammates. On the next Carleton drive Darren Caspers threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kootsikas to give the Knights a stunning lead with 11:50 to go in the first half. Concordia would rally, however, scoring three straight touchdowns to take a lead with 4:11 to go in the third quarter. A 29-yard Jackson touchdown run and a 34 yard Matt Bond '06 field goal cut the Cobber lead to with 13 minutes left in the game, but that would be all the scoring in the game, as Concordia held on for a victory. The Knights had an opportunity to tie the game in the final minute, as they drove to the Concordia seven yard line, but four straight incompletions ended the upset bid.
