Days is the nephew of Buckeye great Jim Cleamons, a current assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers. Reynolds is the younger brother of former Ohio State women s basketball player DiDi Reynolds. Dustin will sit out the season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules (from Hillsdale College in Michigan). Days is expected to be in uniform in January. The Buckeyes now have four walk-on players on the roster. Danny Peters is a fifth-year senior and Mark Titus is in his senior campaign as well. Peters will end his career with five varsity letters, one as a manager (2006) and four as a student-athlete ( ). TURNER, USA EARN BRONZE AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES Junior Evan Turner averaged 4.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and led Team USA with 18 assists at the World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. The United States finished with a 6-1 record at the early- July event with Turner making three starts and averaging 16.3 minutes a game. He connected on 52 percent of his shots (12-23) and 4 of 5 free throws. BUCKEYES RETURN VETERAN SQUAD Accustomed to starting over virtually from scratch each of the last four seasons, Thad Matta, head coach of the Buckeyes, returns all five starters from a squad in In addition to the five regulars that finished the season with an appearance in the 2009 NCAA Tournament, the Buckeyes also return senior Jeremie Simmons, who started 25 of 33 games last year, and junior David Lighty, who started the first seven games of the season before suffering a broken foot. Lighty, who started all 37 games as a true sophomore, received a medical-redshirt, and will have two full seasons of eligibility remaining with the Buckeyes. Leading the returning starters are juniors Evan Turner (33 starts last year), Jon Diebler (33 gs) and Dallas Lauderdale (31 gs). Sophomore William Buford (25) and senior P.J. Hill, who started the last eight games of the season, also return. TURNER AMONG CANDIDATES FOR PRESEASON HONORS Evan Turner led Ohio State and the Big Ten in scoring last season with an average of 17.3 points a game. He was No. 3 in rebounding as well with 7.1 and was among the Top 10 league players in steals (4th/1.8 spg.) and assists (8th/3.97). He was a finalist for Big Ten Player of the Year honors a season ago and will be among the favorites entering his junior season. His name has also garnered All- America consideration after earning a spot among the Top 15 finalists for the 2009 Oscar Robertson Award, given annually by the United States Basketball Writer s Association to the player of the year in college basketball. DIEBLER AMONG BIG TEN, NATION S TOP SHOOTERS Jon Diebler, the all-time leading scorer in Ohio High School history, started slow in the college game from behind the arc, where he made a name for himself as a prep at Upper Sandusky High School. After shooting 29 percent from long range as a rookie (48-166), Diebler responded with a breakout sophomore season. He knocked down 96 of 231 treys for 41.6 percent accuracy. That effort was second in the Big Ten for makes and is the second-most single season 3s made in Ohio State history. He already is second all-time at Ohio State in 3s made in a career (167) and his eight 3s made at Northwestern last year rates No. 2 in Ohio State s record book for 3s made in a game. Buckeyes by Month During Matta Era Year November December Janurary February March April Record Totals LAUDERDALE, MADSEN, SARIKOPOULOS MAN THE MIDDLE FOR BUCKEYES Junior Dallas Lauderdale returns to the paint for Ohio State after sharing time with B.J. Mullens, a 2009 NBA First Round draft pick (24th overall pick) of the Dallas Mavericks. Mullens, later traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, marks the fifth Buckeye first-round pick under Matta and sixth overall NBA player since taking over in Lauderdale continues to improve physically and defensively. He was among the nation s top shot blockers last season, rejecting 67 shots to finish No. 2 in the Big Ten with an average of 2.03 blocks per game. Madsen is in his third season with the Buckeyes and has earned his Ohio State degree. His experience with Thad Matta s system, ability to score and provide quality defensive minutes will earn playing time. He started three games this year while Lauderdale recovered from a right hand injury early in the season. Sarikopoulos, a transfer from UAB who sat out the season at Ohio State to satisfy NCAA transfer rules, becomes eligible this season. He adds size (7-0, 265), rebounding and post-passing skills to the Ohio State big man rotation. Sarikopoulos played sparingly during the U19 World Championships for his native Greece. A left-knee sprain hampered his playing time during the event. He averaged 1.3 points and 0.7 rebounds as the United States defeated Greece to claim gold. The event was held in Auckland, New Zealand in early July. WHERE TO POINT? The point guard position rotated between Jeremie Simmons and P.J. Hill a season ago with Simmons starting the first 25 games and Hill the final eight. Simmons moved over to provide minutes at the No. 2 guard spot, his natural position, down the stretch. Evan Turner will see the majority of the time directing traffic this year. He handed out 97 assists last season to lead the Buckeyes in that category while also recording 58 thefts at the defensive end. 7 Six Student-Athletes Added to Men s Basketball Program Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach, announced the addition of six student-athletes to the Buckeye men s basketball program Nov. 11. The class of six high school seniors is rated by many analysts as the No. 1 class in the nation and will be eligible to play for the Buckeyes in the fall of The highly-touted class includes a quartet of Ohioans and natives of Illinois and Indiana. Jared Sullinger, a 6-foot-9-inch power forward from Northland High School in Columbus, Ohio, is rated in most major recruiting publications as the No. 1 player at his position and the No. 1, 2 or 3 player overall nationally. His high school teammate, 6-6 small forward J.D. Weatherspoon, is ranked among the nation s best at his position. Ft. Wayne, Ind. (Bishop Luers) product Deshaun Thomas (6-7 forward) is the No. 1 small forward in the country. He ll be joined by Lenzelle Smith, Jr. (6-4, guard) one of the top shooting guard prospects and a consensus Top 75 recruit. Aaron Craft, a 6-2 point guard, from Findlay (Ohio) Liberty Benton, and Cincinnati, Ohio, native Jordan Sibert (6-4 guard) round out the Class of Craft and Sibert are both considered to be Top 100 by major recruiting services. Sullinger and Weatherspoon led Northland to its first state championship as juniors in Sullinger made the winning free throws with three seconds remaining. He was named Mr. Basketball for the state of Ohio after averaging 19.9 points and 14.8 rebounds last season and is considered to be one of the top prospects in America. The power forward is the brother of former Buckeye J.J. Sullinger. As a sophomore, Jared was named Third-Team All-Ohio. Weatherspoon averaged nearly 15 points and 8.0 rebounds a game as a junior and was Northland s leading scorer (18 pts.) in the state championship game. The past three summers, Sullinger and Weatherspoon led their AAU team, All-Ohio Red, to a record, collecting 29 titles out of 33 tournaments entered, including three national titles. Thomas is one of the most sought-after recruits to come out of the basketball-rich state of Indiana. The Fort Wayne native led his high school, Bishop Luers, to back-to-back state championships. In the process, Thomas has established himself as one of the state s most prolific scorers. He is already Luers all-time leading scorer. As a junior, he averaged 30.3 points to go along with 15.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 blocks. During the state basketball tournament, Thomas averaged 23.4 points. He is currently the 11th all-time scorer in Indiana high school history, needing just more than 800 points this season to surpass Damon Bailey as the all-time leading scorer for the state of Indiana. Thomas has averaged more than 29 points in his career. Smith, a bigger guard who has a knack for distributing the basketball, will add a new dimension to the Buckeyes guard play. The 6-4, 210 pound lefty can shoot the three off the catch or dribble and is able to post up smaller defenders with his unusual size for a guard. Smith was first-team allstate last season and led Zion-Benton High School to a state runner-up finish in He is one of the top guard recruits in the country and was coveted by more than a dozen teams. Along with his basketball skills, Smith is a star in the classroom, carrying a 4.1 grade-point average. Craft has made a name for himself with his stout defense and is considered one of the best guard defenders for the Class of Craft led Liberty-Benton High School to a state runner-up finish his freshman season and was named First- Team All-Ohio as a junior. He can also create opportunities for himself, averaging 19 points last year. He is an all-around point guard and has the qualities that should help him excel as a Buckeye. He too played for All-Ohio Red in the summers. In addition, Craft carries a 4.0 grade-point average. Sibert also played for All-Ohio Red. The shooting guard from Cincinnati led Princeton High School to a state runner-up finish last season, losing in the championship game to Northland High School and fellow OSU recruits Jared Sullinger and J.D. Weatherspoon. Sibert scored 21 points in the title game and was named Honorable Mention All-Ohio. Sibert is known for his ability to slash between defenders and get to the rim with his speed and athleticism. He suffered a leg injury after his high school season last summer and was not able to compete in the summer of What they are saying about EVAN TURNER... At 6-7, 205, Evan Turner is the most versatile player in the country. Thad Matta has him doing everything on the court: rebounding, passing, shooting. He makes everybody else around him better. It s about time we put Evan Turner in talks about national player of the year. -Jay Williams, ESPN Noting ET Evan Turner is one of two Big Ten players currently averaging a double-double (19.8 ppg./12.8 rebs.)
