FOUL DQ AST AVG TO BLK STL PTS AVG #18/16 U-M (11-2) Minnesota (12-2) WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MICHIGAN Michigan's 11-2 start is the best for the Wolverines in the John Beilein era Michigan has won its last six straight games Michigan is a perfect 8-0 at home this season and has won its last nine straight in Ann Arbor Michigan's against Penn State marked John Beilein's first win in a Big Ten opener at Michigan Michigan continues to stay in the national top-25 as the Wolverines are currently ranked 18th by the Associated Press and 16th in the ESPN/USA Today Poll Michigan is one of five nationally ranked teams from the Big Ten -- Ohio State (#2/2), Wisconsin (#11/11), Indiana (#13/15) and Michigan State (#16/17). Michigan's win over No. 8 Memphis in the Maui Invitational was John Beilein's first win over a top-10 program since the season -- when U-M defeated No. 4 Duke (81-73) at Crisler Center Michigan was 10-2 during its 2011 non-conference slate; however, U-M still has one remaining non-league game on the schedule. The Wolverines head to Fayetteville, Ark., to play Arkansas on Jan. 21 during one of U-M's conference bye weeks Michigan is averaging 71.6 points per game, with six games of 75-or-more, including a season-high of 90 in win at Oakland (Palace of Auburn Hills). In the John Beilein era, U-M has eclipsed 90-points just three times -- twice against Oakland (103, Dec. 12, 2007 & 90, Dec. 10, 2011) and Northern Michigan (97, Nov. 14, 2009). When Michigan scores 80-or-more points, the Wolverines are a perfect 18-0 in the John Beilein era. Michigan is shooting 48.9 percent from the field this season, which currently the top single-season percentage in the John Beilein era. Currently it is ahead of last year's 44.8 final season percentage. Michigan has shot better than 50 percent from the field four times this season, including a season-best 61.7 percent (29-for-47) vs. UCLA (Nov. 23). Michigan has dished out double figure assists in 12 of its 13 games, including two games with 20-plus at Oakland (Palace of Auburn Hills) and 25 against Bradley. Michigan has 11 games with 30-or-more rebounds, including a season-high 41 rebounds against Alabama A&M. The last time U-M had at least 40 rebounds was against Kansas (Jan. 9, 2011). Michigan had a season-best six turnovers (to go along with 25 assists) in its win against Bradley. Three times this season U-M has posted sub-10 turnovers -- 9 vs. Duke (Maui Invitational) and Penn State and the six against Bradley. WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE WOLVERINES Michigan currently has three players averaging double-digit scoring per game -- Tim Hardaway (16.2), Trey Burke (13.0), and Evan Smotrycz (11.6). Tim Hardaway Jr. scored a season-best 26 points against Penn State going 11-for-18 from the field. The interesting factor was his 10-for-11 performance on buckets inside the arc -- showing a low post game, slashing to basket and backdoor cuts for dunks. Overall it was his fourth 20-plus point game of the season. Trey Burke (13.0 ppg) is second amongst Big Ten freshmen in scoring, only trailing Indiana s Cody Zeller (14.2 ppg). Trey Burke, the two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, is third in assists in the Big Ten (5.2) and has four-or-more assists in 10-of-13 games this season. He has dished out a career-best nine twice -- vs. Duke (Maui Invitational) and at Oakland (played at the Palace of Auburn Hills). Jordan Morgan continues to lead Michigan and the Big Ten in field goal percentage percent (42-for-62). He led both the Wolverines and the conference last season with a 62.7 percentage. Using three straight double-doubles, Evan Smotrycz is leading U-M with 6.9 rebounds per game. He has collected 55 (9.2 per game) of his 90 total in his last six games. Evan Smotrycz has posted double-doubles in his last three straight games. First, he had 17 points and a career-best 11 rebounds against Alabama A&M, followed with a career-best-tying 20 points and 10 rebounds in win over Bradley. He posted his third straight with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Penn State. In his last seven games Evan Smotrycz has been on fire from long range shooting 67.9 percent (19-for-28). Michigan vs. Minnesota All-Time Series Sanction Adjusted Home Away Neutral John Beilein (2-2 home, 3-1 road) With the emergence of Evan Smotrycz as U-M's four-man, Zack Novak has returned to his natural two-guard position. In his last six games, Novak has averaged 8.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists (28 assists to 5 turnovers) and has shot 50.0 percent (18-for-36) from the field. Eso Akunne has come off the bench to replace either Trey Burke or Stu Douglass and has shot 7-for-8, including going 4-for-5 from long range. Akunne's only miss of the season came on a three-pointer at Oakland (Palace of Auburn Hills) THE MIND BLOWING NUMBERS Evan Smotrycz has remained red hot for Michigan during his last seven games averaging 14.4 points and 8.6 rebounds, posting a career-best 20 points twice, grabbing a career-best 11 rebounds and producing three straight double-doubles. In fact he has 101 of his 150 total points this season in the last seven games. In the first six games, Smotrycz averaged 8.2 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 44.2 percent (19-for-43) from the floor, 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from long range and 54.5 percent (6-for-11) on free throws. In the next seven games, Smotrycz has averaged 14.4 points and 8.6 rebounds while shooting 66.7 percent (32-for-48), 67.9 percent (19-for-28) from long range and 78.3 percent (18-for-23) on free throws. SOMETHING ABOUT THE SECOND HALF FOR JUNIOR This season Tim Hardaway Jr. has seven games in which he has reached double figures in the second half compared to just three where he reached the mark in the first half Two of the six games are notable -- after not scoring against Duke in the first half, Hardaway closed with 19 in the second and after scoring just three points against Oakland in the first half he closed with 18 in the second. In the first half, Hardaway averages 6.1 points shooting 37.5 percent (30-for-80) from the field, 22.5 percent (9-or-40) on three-pointers and 66.7 percent (10-for- 15) on free throws. In the second half, Hardaway averages 10.2 points shooting 58.2 percent (46- for-79), 41.2 percent (14-for-34) on three-pointers and 70.3 percent (26-for-37) on free throws. RECORD WATCHERS With his five rebounds against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (Dec. 13), Zack Novak became the 40th man in program history to grab 500 rebounds in his career. He currently he ranks 40th all-time with 514. Zack Novak became the 18th Wolverine to start 100 games in a career. He is tied for 15th on U-M's all-time list with 101 in his career. Stu Douglass has not missed a game in his career, playing in 115 straight contests. With 18 regular season games remaining (without postseason), he will be just two away from U-M's all-time record of 135 held by Loy Vaught ( ). Zack Novak has played in 113 games for the Wolverines. A LITTLE WOLVERINE BASICS Michigan runs a two-guard set offense, with motion principles Michigan primarily plays a man-to-man defense, with a 2-3 and a zone thrown in at various times John Beilein is in his fifth season as head coach of Michigan. He has a record with the Wolverines -- including two 20-win seasons and two trips to the NCAA Tournament (2009 & 2011). Michigan only lost one member from last year's squad -- sophomore Darius Morris (NBA Draft), who was a second round pick by his hometown Los Angeles Lakers (41st pick). After not having a senior on the roster last season, Michigan is still considered young playing two seniors (Zack Novak & Stu Douglass) and one junior (Matt Vogrich). For the first time in his career at Michigan, John Beilein will have no turnover in his coaching or strength and conditioning staff. Beilein's assistants include Jeff Meyer, Bacari Alexander and LaVall Jordan. Zack Novak is captaining the Wolverines for the third-straight season. He was just the second sophomore to be named captain as well as just the second player to serve for three seasons. Novak is joined by Stu Douglass as co-captain for the second straight season. Zack Novak, Stu Douglass and Corey Person will be the first three players to spend their entire four-year career under the guidance of John Beilein at Michigan. A TRIO OF EARLY SIGNEES Michigan inked three top 100 players during the November early signing period forward Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy), 6-6 forward Tre Robinson (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS) and 6-6 forward Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Mark's Academy) Mitch McGary is rated by ESPN.com (#2, graded 97 out of 100), Scout. com (#2) and Rivals.com (#3) Mitch McGary grew up with current Wolverine captain Zack Novak in Chesterton, Ind. Phase I of the Crisler Center, which was completed at a cost of $20 million, primarily addressed infrastructure needs such as repair of the roof, electrical, plumbing and air handling systems. However, the most noticeable areas of Phase I was the complete renovation of Crisler Center's interior bowl -- which included new HD scoreboards, new seating of the entire arena area including club seating, expanded seating for people with disabilities, addition of hand rails, construction of loge box seating, as well as the Wolverine Den. Phase II of the Crisler Center renovation will begin during the season. This project, which is budgeted for $52 million, will add approximately 63,000 gross square feet to Crisler Center allowing for new fan entrances, expanded and renovated concourses, new restrooms and concession areas, fan interactive areas, additional retail spaces and ticketing areas, as well as a private club space. Michigan moved into its new home -- the Player Development Center -- in mid-october. The Player Development Center was built at a cost of $23.2 million. The PDC houses has a total of 57,000 square feet, including two practice courts, the men's and women's basketball offices, meeting rooms, film rooms, weight room, athletic training room, equipment room and new team locker rooms. Each player's locker is equipped with an ipad for personal use in the facility, film work, as well as scouting reports. The idea for the ipad's came from Director of Basketball Operations Travis Conlan MICHIGAN AT THE MAUI INVITATIONAL Michigan finished third at the 2011 Maui Invitational following a victory over UCLA Michigan opened the tournament with a win over No. 8 Memphis before losing in the semifinal against No. 6 Duke, After averaging 20.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and shooting 50.0 percent from the field (20-for- 40), Tim Hardaway Jr. was named to the 2011 All-Tournament team -- along with Duke's Austin Rivers and Ryan Kelly (MVP), Georgetown's Jason Clark and Kansas' Thomas Robinson For the tournament, Michigan shot 54.4 percent (87-for-160) from the field as a team, while averaging 75.7 points per game Overall, Michigan had three players average in double figures -- Tim Hardaway Jr. (20.0), Trey Burke (13.7) and Zack Novak (12.0) Michigan is 10-4 (9-2*) all-time at the Maui Invitational having competed in the event five times , 88, 94, 98, 2011 Michigan has two Maui Invitational titles in 1985 and 1988 MICHIGAN IN THE BIG TEN/ACC CHALLENGE The Big Ten won the Commissioner's Cup for the third straight year with an 8-4 record in The Big Ten evenly split the wins with four wins at home and four road victories. Michigan fell in its 2011 challenge matchup at Virginia, 70-58, and drops to 4-7 all-time in the Challenge series. In 2009, John Beilein led No. 10 Michigan to the second round, after defeating No. 7 Clemson (62-59) before falling to No. 2 Oklahoma (73-63). In 2011, Beilein led No. 8 Michigan to the third round, after defeating No. 9 Tennessee (75-45) before falling to No. 1 Duke (73-71). John Beilein appeared in his sixth NCAA Tournament in 2011, his second at the helm of Michigan. Beilein is 8-6 all-time in the tournament, 2-2 at Michigan. John Beilein is one of just seven coaches to take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament, along with Lefty Driesell, Jim Harrick, Lon Kruger, Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith and Eddie Sutton. Beilein has taken Canisius (once), Richmond (once), West Virginia (twice) and Michigan (twice) to the NCAA Tournament. No coach has ever taken five schools to the NCAA Tournament. In 2011, John Beilein faced a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in his coaching career. Beilein has met No. 2 seeds on three occasions -- defeating No. 2 Wake Forest in the 2005 second round at West Virginia, falling to No. 2 Texas in the 2006 Sweet 16 at West Virginia and falling to No. 2 Oklahoma in the 2009 Second Round at Michigan. John Beilein has only lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament once in his six trips, in 1996 to Utah while coaching at Canisius College. Last season was the 12th overall Division I postseason appearance for Beilein, including six trips to the NIT. Beilein is all-time in postseason play. Beilein also guided LeMoyne College to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 1988, going 1-1 with the Dolphins. 10 MICHIGAN BASKETBALL season

He has made 12 postseason appearances in his 19 seasons at the helm of a college Division I basketball program -- six NCAA Tournament and six NIT. The 20-Win Standard: John Beilein is the only active coach in the collegiate ranks to record a 20-win season at four different levels: junior college, NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I. In fact, Beilein has recorded a 20-win season in all seven coaching stops in his 34 seasons. Overall, Beilein has compiled win campaigns. One of Seven: John Beilein has guided four different programs to the NCAA Tournament -- Canisius (1996), Richmond (1998), West Virginia (2005, 2006) and Michigan (2009, 2011). Beilein is one of seven coaches to take four different schools to the Big Dance. There has never been a coach to take more than four different schools to the NCAA Tournament. It should be noted, with Beilein's 1988 Division II NCAA Tournament appearance, he technically has taken five different teams to the NCAA postseason. The list of seven includes: John Beilein (Canisius, Richmond, West Virginia, Michigan) Lefty Driesell (Davidson, Maryland, James Madison, Georgia State) Jim Harrick (Pepperdine, UCLA, Rhode Island, Georgia) Lon Kruger (Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, UNLV) Rick Pitino (Boston U., Providence, Kentucky, Louisville) Tubby Smith (Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota) Eddie Sutton (Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma State) Beilein's Recruitng Classes Ben Cronin (Syracuse, N.Y.) Michigan Big Ten Totals Beilein at the Helm of U-M (THE SEASON): John Beilein entered his fourth season at Michigan with one of the youngest teams in the nation as the Wolverines roster featured no seniors and 11 underclassmen, tied for 16th-most in the nation. The Maize and Blue, which was picked to finish near the bottom of the Big Ten, opened league play 1-6 before winning at Michigan State for the first time since That victory propelled U-M to an 8-3 finish to the regular season, ending with a 9-9 record in the Big Ten. Michigan earned the fourth seed at the Big Ten Tournament, its highest since 2003, and advanced to the semifinal for the first time since U-M qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons, earning a No. 8 seed. The Wolverines defeated No. 9 seed Tennessee, 75-45, the largest margin of victory ever in an 8-9 matchup. (THE SEASON): In his third season at Michigan, John Beilein's Wolverines picked up two wins over top-15 teams (No. 15 Ohio State and No. 15 UConn) while falling victim to close losses in a campaign. Michigan lost nine games by seven-or-fewer points as the Wolverines just could not seem to get that late game break. Senior DeShawn Sims and junior Manny Harris picked up All-Big Ten honors for the second consecutive season, with Sims earning secondteam honors while Harris garnered third-team accolades. Harris declared for the NBA at the completion of the season, forgoing his senior year at Michigan. (THE SEASON): The second season of the John Beilein era at Michigan saw his Wolverines return to national prominence, ending a 12-year NCAA Tournament drought with a selection to the 2009 event. U-M recorded the program's 22nd 20-win season in school history, ending with a record, doubling the win total from a season prior. Michigan advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after upsetting Clemson (62-59) in the first round. In addition to the postseason, U-M set single-season records for free throw percentage (75.7 percent), three-point field goals made (305) and attempts (912). (THE SEASON): In his first season with Michigan, John Beilein s young Wolverine team played one of the toughest schedules in the country, facing eight selections to the 2008 NCAA Tournament and 11 nationally ranked opponents. Beilein established a foundation for his U-M program, starting three freshmen and two sophomores throughout the season and, as the year came to a close, saw his Wolverines improve. Half of Michigan s 10 wins were over the final 10-game stretch (one in Big Ten Tournament action). game day notebook MICHIGAN BASKETBALL 17
