The Fighting Illini were 16-8 (5-6 Big Ten) entering this weekend s action. They play five of their final eight conference games on the road. Illinois is led by junior Brandon Paul, who averages 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists. He is also known for his long-range shooting as he has knocked down 42 this season. It is the Wolverines best 25-game mark since season. Michigan is 8-4 in conference play, putting the Wolverines in a tie for third place with Wisconsin (as of Feb. 10). Michigan has responded after each of its seven losses this season, winning the next game by an average of 10.7 points per game. U-M has not lost two games in a row this season. After playing six of its last eight games on the road, Michigan has just six games remaining in the regular season -- three at home and three on the road. Prior to Michigan's game at Nebraska, the Wolverines played three straight top 25 programs. Overall, U-M has eight games against the top-25 and is 4-4 this season. Michigan remains a perfect 13-0 at home this season and has won its last 14 games at Crisler Center. U-M is one of three Big Ten teams with unblemished home records -- Ohio State (17-0) and Michigan State (15-0). Michigan has sold out five of its last six games at Crisler Center -- Penn State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan State, and Indiana. U-M's final three home games are expected to be sellouts. Michigan averages 10.9 turnovers per game, and has eight games with less than 10. In fact at Nebraska, U-M had just seven turnovers; however three of those were shot clock violations. With his 14 points against Nebraska, Zack Novak became the 45th Wolverine to score 1,000 career points. He now has 1,008 points in his Michigan career. When combined with his 569 rebounds, Novak is the 28th player in program history to amass 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. Zack Novak has gone 20-for-36 from long range (55.6 percent) over the last eight games, hitting double figures in six of those games. Over his last six games, Jordan Morgan has shot 65.9 percent from the field (27- for-41), while averaging 10.5 points and 5.3 rebounds. Stu Douglass replaced Evan Smotrycz in the starting lineup seven games ago. During the starting span, Douglass has averaged 8.6 points, 3.3 assists and 2.9 rebounds. Trey Burke has five Big Ten honors this season -- Player of the Week (1) and Freshman of the Week (4). He was also a top-20 finalist for the Bob Cousy Award. WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MICHIGAN Michigan runs a two-guard set offense, with motion principles. Michigan primarily plays a man-to-man defense, with a 2-3 and a zone thrown in at various times. Michigan only lost one member from last year's squad -- sophomore Darius Morris (NBA Draft), who was a second round pick by his hometown Los Angeles Lakers (41st overall). Morris has made the NBA roster and has played in seven games this season. Michigan remains ranked in both major national polls 22nd by the Associated Press and 25th in the ESPN/USA Today Poll. The Wolverines have been in the top 25 since the preseason poll. Michigan is one of five teams from the Big Ten that are nationally ranked by the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today -- Ohio State (#3/3), Michigan State (#11/12), Wisconsin (#21/22), Michigan (#22/25) and Indiana (#23/23). Michigan has faced a total of eight nationally ranked opponents and has four wins -- #8/8 Memphis (73-61), #18/19 Wisconsin (59-41), #9/9 Michigan State (60-59), and #20/20 Indiana (68-56). Michigan's win over #8/8 Memphis was John Beilein's first win over a top-10 team since the season when U-M defeated #4/4 Duke (81-73) at Crisler Center. Beilein won his second top-10 game this season with a win against in-state rival #9/9 Michigan State. Michigan's win over #18/19 Wisconsin snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Badgers. (ranking note: all rankings are current to date) Two of Michigan's road losses have seen U-M rallies that fell just short. After trailing by 15 at Indiana, U-M's rally just fell short as the Wolverines lost by two (73-71). Then after trailing by 20 at Arkansas, U-M's rally fell short again as the Wolverines lost again by two (66-64) as Trey Burke's last second three-pointer rolled around the rim and popped out. Michigan is allowing 60.4 points per game and has held 15 of its opponents to 60-or-fewer points. All 15 games resulted in wins for the Wolverines. In addition, the 60.4 per game average is the lowest average for an opponent in the John Beilein era. Michigan averages 66.8 points per game and has scored over 75 points six times, including a season-high of 90 in win at Oakland (Palace of Auburn Hills). U-M is 5-1 when scoring 75-plus points. When Michigan scores 80-or-more points, the Wolverines are a perfect 18-0 in the John Beilein era. Michigan is shooting 46.0 percent from the field on the year, which is currently the top single-season percentage for any season in the John Beilein era. It is currently higher than last year's 44.8 percent mark. Michigan has eight games turning the ball over less than 10 times -- six against Bradley and Indiana, seven against Northwestern and Nebraska, eight against Michigan State, and nine vs. Duke, Penn State, and Wisconsin. For the season, U-M averages 10.9 per game, which ranks 14th in the nation. WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE PLAYERS Zack Novak is captaining the Wolverines for the third straight season. He was just the second sophomore in school history to be named captain as well as just the second player to serve as captain for three seasons. Novak is joined by Stu Douglass as co-captain for the second straight season. Zack Novak, Stu Douglass and Corey Person will be the first three players to spend their entire four-year careers under the guidance of John Beilein at Michigan. Ben Cronin, who had his career cut short due to injury, gives the class four members as Cronin continues to serve as a student assistant with the program. All four players will be honored at U-M's home finale against Purdue. Michigan altered the starting lineup for Michigan's home game against Michigan State (Jan. 17), putting Stu Douglass at the two-guard, while Evan Smotrycz came off the bench. It paid off for U-M as Novak helped hold Green, who averaged a double-double going into the contest, to a seasonlow seven points. Michigan is led in scoring by Tim Hardaway Jr. (14.3) and Trey Burke (14.0). Hardaway has 18 games scoring in double figures with four 20-plus point games, while Burke has reached double figures in 22 games with three 20-plus point games. Tim Hardaway Jr. scored a season-high 26 points in the win against Penn State, going 11-for-18 from the field. He managed to shoot 10-for-11 on two-point shots scoring from the low-post, slashing to basket and taking backdoor cuts for dunks. This season, Tim Hardaway Jr. has 11 games in which he has reached double figures in the second half alone, compared to just four in the first half. Games of note for Hardaway's second half surges include not scoring vs. Duke in the first half, but closing with 19 in the second; after scoring three points at Oakland in the first half, he scored 18 in the second half to close with 21 for the game and after scoring six points at Purdue in the first half, he added 13 in the second half giving him 19 in the road win. Tim Hardaway Jr. tallied the second double-double of his career with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the win against Wisconsin. Hardaway's other double-double was another 17-point, 10-rebound performance against Northwestern (Feb. 9, 2011). Trey Burke scored a career-high 27 points in the win against Minnesota, going 8-for-11 from the field. This included a 2-for-2 clip from beyond the arc in addition to his 9-for-11 effort from the free throw line. Trey Burke (14.0 ppg) is second among Big Ten freshmen in scoring average, trailing only Indiana forward/center Cody Zeller (15.1 ppg). Burke is 18th in scoring average among the nation's top true freshmen. Trey Burke is second in the Big Ten in assists, averaging 4.9 assists per game, and eclipsed 100 assists in his first season as he has 117. Overall, Burke is sixth among the nation's top true freshmen. Burke has 12 games this season with five-plus assists and posted career bests of nine against Duke (Maui Invitational) and at Oakland (Palace). Burke is just 24 assists away from setting the U-M freshman signle season record. One more stat item for Trey Burke: he has 10 blocks this season, which is tied for the team lead with Evan Smotrycz, and ahead of Jordan Morgan's and Jon Horford's nine -- all of whom stand over 6-8. Jordan Morgan continues to lead Michigan and the Big Ten in field goal percentage at 65.2 percent (86-for-132). He led both the Wolverines and the conference last season at 62.7 percent. Jordan Morgan has taken over the team lead for rebounding with 5.5 per game. He has collected at least seven rebounds in eight games, including a career-best 12 rebounds against Minnesota. During Big Ten play, Morgan 6.3 rebounds per game offensive and 3.8 defensive. Evan Smotrycz is second on the Wolverines with 5.1 rebounds per game. He has grabbed five-plus rebounds in 11 games, reaching the 10 rebound mark three times. Evan Smotrycz posted double-doubles in three consecutive games. First, he had 17 points and a career-best 11 rebounds against Alabama A&M, followed by an effort in which he tied his career-high with 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds in the win over Bradley. He posted his third straight game with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Penn State. RECORD WATCHERS Stu Douglass has not missed a game in his career, playing in 127 consecutive games. With six regular season games remaining (without postseason), he will be just two away from U-M's all-time record of 135, which is held by Loy Vaught ( ). Zack Novak has played in 125 total games. With six regular season games remaining (without postseason), he will be just four away from U-M's all-time record. Zack Novak became the 18th Wolverine to start 100 games. He currently ranks fifth in program history with 113. He has started his last 84 consecutive games. Zack Novak became the 40th player to grab 500 rebounds in his career. Currently his 569 total ranks him 30th in school history. Along with his 1,008 points, he is just the 28th Wolverine to tally 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. Zack Novak ranks fourth all-time for minutes played (4,062), an average of 32.5 per game. He is the fourth player in U-M history with 4,000 career minutes. Zack Novak ranks fourth all-time for three-pointers made (202) and fifth for three-point attempts (559). Novak is just the fourth player to tally 200 threepointers in a career. Stu Douglass ranks fourth for three-point attempts (567) and fifth all-time for three-pointers made (193). Zack Novak (1,008) is the 45th Wolverine with 1,000 points in his career. Stu Douglass (874) needs 126 points to become the 46th Wolverine with 1,000 in his career. Tim Hardaway Jr. (843) needs 157 points to become the 46th Wolverine with 1,000 in his career. With 122 assists and six regular season games remaining this season, Trey Burke needs just 19 more to break the U-M freshman record of 140 held by Gary Grant during the season. Game Notes SEASON HONORS Tim Hardaway Jr. was named the Big Ten Player of the Week (Nov. 28). -- Earned the honor after earning Maui Invitational All-Tournament honors for posting 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 50.0 percent (20-for-40) overall. Trey Burke has been named the Big Ten's Player of the Week once (co, Jan. 2) and the Freshman of the Week, four times (Nov. 28, Dec. 12, Jan. 2 and Jan. 23). -- Earned FOW (Jan. 23) after averaging 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in upset win over Michigan State (20 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and two steals) and narrow two-point loss at Arkansas (13 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists). -- Earned both awards in the same week (Jan. 2) after guiding U-M to a 2-0 start in Big Ten play, averaging 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game while shooting 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from the field and 88.9 percent (16-for-18) from the free throw line. During the week, Burke tallied 13 points, five rebounds and seven assists (and no turnovers) against Penn State and had a career-best 27 points against Minnesota. -- Earned FOW (Dec. 12) after recording 20 points in a win over Oakland, going 7-for-11 and dishing out nine assists. -- Earned FOW (Nov. 28) after helping U-M to a third place finish at the Maui Invitational, averaging 12.0 points and 6.0 assists per game in the three contests. He recorded 17 points and nine assists vs. Duke. Zack Novak earned his third straight Capital One Academic All-District V first team and is now eligible to earn a spot on the Academic All-America team. NATIONAL AWARD LISTS Zack Novak is one of 10 finalists for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS award candidate -- CLASS is an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School. The award is given to a studentathlete that is classified as an NCAA Division I senior and has notable achievements in four areas of excellence -- community, classroom, character and competition. Redshirted the season after suffering a knee injury during preseason conditioning, returned to practice only to suffer a season-ending shoulder injury diving for a ball in a drill on the scout team. This shelved him for the remainder of the season. Former roommate of Darius Morris, who left U-M as a sophomore and was drafted in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft by the L.A. Game Notes INTRODUCING THE NEW CRISLER CENTER With the renovations of Crisler Arena, the addition of the Player Development Center and eventually the arena club and stores, Michigan will now refer to the entire complex as Crisler Center. Phase I of Crisler Center's renovations, which was completed at a cost of $20 million, primarily addressed infrastructure needs such as repair of the roof, electrical, plumbing and air handling systems. The most noticeable area of Phase I, however, was the complete renovation of Crisler Center's interior bowl, which included new HD scoreboards, new seating for the entire arena area, including club seating, expanded seating for people with disabilities, the addition of hand rails, the construction of loge box seating, as well as the newly added Wolverine Den. Phase II of Crisler Center's renovation will begin during the season. This portion of the project, which is budgeted for $52 million, will add approximately 63,000 gross square feet to the Crisler Center, allowing for new fan entrances, expanded and renovated concourses, new restrooms and concession areas, fan interactive areas, additional retail spaces and ticketing areas, as well as a private club space. Michigan moved into its new home -- the Player Development Center -- in mid- October. The Player Development Center was built at a cost of $23.2 million. The PDC has a total of 57,000 square feet, including two practice courts, the men's and women's basketball offices, meeting rooms, film rooms, a weight room, an athletic training room, an equipment room and new team locker rooms. Each player's locker is equipped with an ipad for personal use in the facility, film work, as well as scouting reports. The idea for the ipads came from Director of Basketball Operations Travis Conlan. A PDC dedication ceremony was held during halftime of the Wisconsin game on Jan. 8. A LITTLE ABOUT THE SEASON Michigan played the 19th toughest schedule in the country. Michigan had 24 games against the RPI top 100, with 17 against the top 50. Michigan finished with the 23rd 20-win season in school history (21-14). Michigan had a squad that featured no seniors and six freshmen. Michigan played 18 games against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament. Michigan tied for fourth overall in the Big Ten the highest finish for U-M head coach John Beilein. Michigan advanced to the semifinal of the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since Michigan was one of just three schools in the Big Ten (Ohio State, Purdue) with four-or-more road wins in conference play. Michigan had the youngest team in the Big Ten and 19th youngest in the country. Michigan was picked to finish 10th or 11th in the Big Ten in nearly every preseason publication. Michigan finished its non-conference schedule with a 10-2 record. U-M lost seven of its next eight games, and began Big Ten play 1-6. Michigan's win at Michigan State -- its first victory against the Spartans on the road since sparked the Wolverines, as they won 10 of their last 15 games to close the season and earn the program s second NCAA Tournament trip in three seasons. Nine of Michigan's 14 losses in came against some of the top-ranked programs in the nation. The Wolverines lost those games by a mere average of 4.3 points, including five by three-or-fewer points. TO THE VICTORS VALIANT hail! to the conqu'ring heroes U-M Adds Trio During Early Signing Period U-M coach John Beilein announced the signings of 6-10 forward Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy [N.H.]), 6-6 forward Glenn "Tre" Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS) and a 6-6 forward Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Mark's School [Mass.]) to a National Letters of Intent in the November early signing period. Mitch McGary Mitch McGary is playing in his final prep season at preseason ranked No. 1 Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. Last season, McGary helped Coach Jason Smith's Bobcats to a 33-3 record and the NEPSAC Class AAA semifinal while averaging 12.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per game. Prior to heading to prep school, McGary played two seasons at Chesterton High School under Coach Tom Peller. As a junior, he averaged 22.0 points, 13.3 rebound, 5.0 blocks and 3.0 assists, leading the Trojans to the 4A Sectional qualifier. In his first varsity season, he averaged 14.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 3.0 assists. Mitch McGary #21 in Class of 2012 Glenn "Tre" Robinson III Tre Robinson blossomed in his junior season at Lake Central High School, averaging 22.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals under Coach Dave Mulausnic. He helped the Indians advance to the Class 4A Sectional semifinal while earning his second straight All-Duneland Conference, all-area and team MVP honors. As a sophomore, he averaged 16.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists. Robinson, who is the son of former NBA All-Star and Purdue Boilermaker Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson, has made two straight trips to the IBCA Top 100 and was named to the Core Six Player team at the 2011 IBCA Junior All-Star Game. Nik Stauskas Nik Stauskas earned NEPSAC Class AA second team and All-Independent School League first team honors last season while playing for coach Dave Lubick at St. Mark's School in Southborough, Mass. Stauskas averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists while helping St. Mark's to a 26-2 record, a perfect 16-0 ISL record and an NEPSAC Division AA runner-up title. Prior to his time at St. Mark's, Stauskas was selected for and attended the NBA Top 100 Camp. Before heading to prep school, he played two years at Loyola Catholic Secondary School in Toronto, Canada. As a sophomore he averaged 32.0 points, 14.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists. What is Being Said... Beilein won his 600th career game as a head coach against Gardner-Webb (80-58, Nov. 21, 2010) at the Crisler Center. Over the span of his career he has coached 1,028 games. Always the Head Man: In his 34 seasons coaching in college basketball, John Beilein has only served as a head coach. He has seven stops during that time period, starting at Erie Community College ( ) and Nazareth (1983), before heading to LeMoyne ( ) for nine seasons. The 20-Win Standard: John Beilein is the only active coach in the collegiate ranks to record a 20-win season at four different levels: junior college, NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I. Michigan Big Ten Totals Beilein at the Helm of U-M (THE SEASON): John Beilein entered his fourth season at Michigan with one of the youngest teams in the nation as the Wolverines roster featured no seniors and 11 underclassmen, tied for 16th-most in the nation. The Maize and Blue, which was picked to finish near the bottom of the Big Ten, opened league play 1-6 before winning at Michigan State for the first time since That victory propelled U-M to an 8-3 finish to the regular season, ending with a 9-9 record in the Big Ten. Michigan earned the fourth seed at the Big Ten Tournament, its highest since 2003, and advanced to the semifinal for the first time since U-M qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons, earning a No. 8 seed. The Wolverines defeated No. 9 seed Tennessee, 75-45, the largest margin of victory ever in an 8-9 matchup. (THE SEASON): In his third season at Michigan, John Beilein's Wolverines picked up two wins over top-15 teams (No. 15 Ohio State and No. 15 UConn) while falling victim to close losses in a campaign. Michigan lost nine games by seven-or-fewer points as the Wolverines just could not seem to get that late game break. Senior DeShawn Sims and junior Manny Harris picked up All-Big Ten honors for the second consecutive season, with Sims earning secondteam honors while Harris garnered third-team accolades. Harris declared for the NBA at the completion of the season, forgoing his senior year at Michigan. (THE SEASON): The second season of the John Beilein era at Michigan saw his Wolverines return to national prominence, ending a 12-year NCAA Tournament drought with a selection to the 2009 event. U-M recorded the program's 22nd 20-win season in school history, ending with a record, doubling the win total from a season prior. Michigan advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after upsetting Clemson (62-59) in the first round. In addition to the postseason, U-M set single-season records for free throw percentage (75.7 percent), three-point field goals made (305) and attempts (912). (THE SEASON): In his first season with Michigan, John Beilein s young Wolverine team played one of the toughest schedules in the country, facing eight selections to the 2008 NCAA Tournament and 11 nationally ranked opponents.
