Delaware State (6-8; 0-0 MEAC) was 5-11 in the MEAC and tied for eighth in the final regular season standings during the campaign. The Hornets are coming off a win over Cheyney last Monday (Jan. 5) in their most recent outing. DeAndre Haywood scored a career-high 25 points and Kendall Gray recorded his eighth doubledouble of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Hornets. DSU shot a season-high 56.1% from the field, hitting 32 of their 57 shots in the contest. The Hornets were also 10-for-22 from three-point territory (45.5%). Haywood was nine-for-11 from the floor, including three-of-four on threepoint shots. He was also four-for-five at the free throw line. Haywood s previous career-high was 23 points in the Hornets overtime win at Penn in the season opener on Nov. 15. Amere May was the only other DSU player in double figures with 10 points. Charles Burley had six points and led all players with six assists for the Hornets. Morgan State (2-14; 0-2 MEAC) brings a six-game losing streak into the contest. The Bears are coming off a loss at St. Mary s (Cal.) on Tuesday. Morgan State hit just 19 of its 54 shots from the floor (35.2%) and were outrebounded in the contest. Blake Bozeman, son of the Bears head coach, was the only MSU player in double figures with 22 points. Bozeman was nine-for-14 from the field, including three-of-seven from three-point territory. Cedric Blossom leads the Bears in scoring at 13.5 points per game. Bozeman is a close second with a 13.2 point per-game average. He also leads the team with 37 three-point field goals (37-115). Zech Smith is Morgan s leading rebounder at (6.8 pg) and shot blocker (25), while Donte Pretlow has a team-high 38 assists. DSU vs. MORGAN STATE SERIES HISTORY (Morgan State leads 43-38) The Hornets are seeking their second straight win in the series. The Hornets and Bears split two regular season meetings last season. Morgan State won the first meeting in Baltimore, Md. It was the first game for Keith Walker as interim head coach of the Hornets. DSU led at the half, but was outscored in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Delaware State avenged the loss with a win in last season s second meeting in Dover, Del. Kendall Gray scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Hornets in the contest. Delaware State has won the last two Memorial Hall meetings against the Bears. The last three games between the teams at DSU have been decided by a combined total of six points (DSU won meeting 52-50; Morgan State won contest 73-72). 3 DELAWARE STATE MEN S BASKETBALL NOTES HORNETS FIFTH IN MEAC PRESEASON POLL Voters in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men s basketball preseason poll believe Delaware State will be an improved team from a year ago. The Hornets have been picked to finish fifth out of 13 teams in the regular season race. The Hornets collected 194 points in the poll of league head coaches and sports information representatives. Defending MEAC champ North Carolina Central is favored to win its second straight regular season title. The Eagles collected 15 of 26 first place votes and 317 total points. Hampton is a close second to NCCU. The Pirates garnered nine first place votes and 304 points. Morgan State (265 points) and Norfolk State (225) are third and fourth, respectively, in the poll. Delaware State was 9-21 overall and tied for eighth in the final regular season standing with a 5-11 MEAC record during the season. The MEAC also announced its preseason player honors. Delaware State center Kendall Gray (jr.; Dover, Del.) has been selected to the preseason All-MEAC First Team, while guard Kendal Williams (sr.; Stone Mountain, Ga.) was a third team pick. Gray was second in the MEAC in rebounding (7.9 pg), third in field goal percentage (.579) and fourth in blocks (2.7 pg) last season. He ranked third on the Hornets in scoring (11.5 ppg) and set a school record for the second time in his career with 81 blocks. In addition, he led the team with 11 double-doubles during the campaign. In three seasons with the Hornets, Gray has 623 points, 420 rebounds and 210 blocks. He needs 13 blocks to become the school s all-time leader. Williams led the Hornets with 84 assists to rank 10th in the MEAC (2.8 pg) in his first year with the Hornets after transferring from Baltimore City Community College. Williams was fourth on the team in scoring and topped the club with a.420 three-point shooting percentage (29-for-69) last season. 4 HEAD COACH KEITH WALKER Keith Walker was officially announced as head coach of the Hornets on Apr. 15, He served as DSU's interim head coach for 11 games after being appointed to the position on Jan. 30, Walker first joined the Delaware State staff as an assistant coach in July During his stint as interim coach, Walker led the Hornets to a 5-6 overall record and 5-5 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Prior to the appointment, the team was 4-15 overall and 0-6 in the conference. Delaware State posted a season-high three-game win streak, highlighted by a victory over MEAC Tournament runner-up Morgan State, during Walker s stint as interim head coach. During the season, Hornet junior center Kendall Gray set a team record with 81 blocks. Gray was named to the 2014 All-MEAC Second Team. Gray held the previous team record with 75 blocks as a sophomore. The Hornets recorded 185 blocks during the campaign, the second-best single-season mark in team history. During the season, Walker s work with the Hornet big men was instrumental in the team's school-record 192 blocks, shattering the record previously held by the squad. Delaware State was tops in the MEAC and fifth among all NCAA Division I teams at 6.6 blocks per game during the campaign. In addition, DSU power forward Marques Oliver moved into first place on the team's list for career blocks that season. Oliver finished his career with 222 blocks. Walker helped lead the Hornets to three consecutive MEAC regular season titles from 2004 to '07, during which the Hornets posted a league record of 46-8 (.850). The Hornets appeared in three consecutive MEAC Tournament championship games, capturing the title and accompanying NCAA Tournament berth in The following year, Delaware State defeated Northern Arizona on the road in the National Invitation Tournament for the team's only national post-season win. The Hornets also appeared in the 2007 National Invitation Tournament. Walker served as head coach at Division II Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., for seven seasons from 1993 to He posted a overall record at Shaw, including a 21-9 mark and the school s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth during the season. He led the team to a 17-9 mark in the campaign. The Bears finished in the Top 10 of the Sheridan Broadcast Network Black College poll during two of Walker's seasons. In 1998, he coached a team of U.S. collegiate players to a bronze medal at a tournament in Russia. From 1987 to '93, Walker was an assistant coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. IUP was ranked number one in the NCAA Division II poll during parts of three seasons while Walker was on the staff. Before entering the coaching ranks, he enjoyed a playing career that included a brief stint with the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers during the season. Prior to reaching the NBA, Walker played a total of seven years with various European and U.S. professional basketball leagues. As a collegiate player at Clemson University, he helped lead the Tigers to a 23-9 overall record and an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament during the season. He was a teammate of former NBA All-Star Larry Nance. Walker earned a 1981 Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Clemson in 1981; and a master s degree in Student Personnel Services from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Keith and wife Kim have three children, Dockery, Zachary and Sawyer. Dockery is a member of the Brown University men s basketball team. Gray is the MEAC leader in total blocks (43), blocks per game (3.3), rebounds per game (10.8) and defensive rebounds per game (8.4). 7 BLOCKS APLENTY Thanks to Kendall Gray, DSU is the top shot blocking team in the MEAC. The Hornets are No. 1 in the league and 38th among NCAA Div. I teams in blocked shots per game (5.1). DSU is also third in the MEAC and 44th nationwide with 72 total blocks. Led by Gray, DSU has posted its top two block numbers in the past three years. In Gray s freshman season of , the Hornets set a school record with 192 blocks. The following season, DSU collected 185 blocks, the second-highest total in team history. HOMEGROWN TALENT For the second straight season, Delaware is the state with the highest number of players on the Hornets roster. The roster includes six First State natives. Local products Tyshawn Bell (Dover) and Kendall Gray (Dover) are in their third season with the team. Bell leads the Hornets with 26 three-point field goals. His lone three-ball against Cheyney is DSU s last outing moved him into fifth place on the Hornets alltime list with 160. Belll had a career-high five three-pointers (5-7) vs. Arkansas on Nov. 21; and hit four threes in the previous contest at North Texas (4-5). He tied his season-high with 19 points in the Arkansas contest. tying his total in the season-opening win at Penn. His career high is 21 points, which he has reached twice. As a junior in , Bell ranked among the MEAC leaders with a.345 three-point percentage (41-for-119); and was second in the league in free throw shooting at 86.2% (75-for-87). He was also second on the Hornets in scoring with a career-best 12.1 point per-game average last season. Bell is also on track to join the Hornets 1000-point club this season. He scored a career-high 21 points in back-to-back games last season. He scored 21 vs. Savannah State on Feb. 10 (7-9 FGs; 2-2 3pt; 5-5 FTs), and followed that with 21 at Bethune-Cookman the next game (6-11 FGs; 7-8 FTs). Bell also tallied 19 points in the previous game (vs. SC State) to give him 61 during the three-game stretch. He was fifth on the Hornets in scoring (7.2 ppg) and second in threepoint field goals (43). Bell ranked fourth in the MEAC in three-point percentage ( for-111) and knocked down at least one three-pointer in 22 of DSU's 30 contests during his rookie season. AMERE MAY COMES FULL CIRCLE WITH THE HORNETS Amere May stepped into the national spotlight with his career-best 48-point performance in the Hornets victory over St. Francis Brooklyn on Dec. 17, the second highest total in team history. May was 16-for-25 from the field, including six-of-10 from threepoint territory; and 10-for-10 at the free throw line. His point total was the most by a Hornet since Tom Davis set the team record with 50 against Brooklyn College on Feb. 1, 1989; and is tops among all NCAA Division I players this season. His previous DSU high was 32 points in the Hornets' win over Wake Forest on Nov. 28. He had four three-pointers in the first 20 minutes. His six three-pointers in the game tied his career-high. He also had six baskets from beyond the arc in the Wake Forest contest. The performance against St. Francis helped earn May his second MEAC Player-of-the-Week award this season on Dec. 22. He was named MEAC Player-of-the-Week for the first time in his career on Dec. 1 after scoring 50 points in two games. As of Jan. 7, May was second in the MEAC (40th nationally) in scoring at 18.5 points per game. He s also second in the league in free throw percentage (83.7%) and fifth in three-point field goals per game (2.3). He has scored at least 20 points in four games this season. One of the first calls Keith Walker received after being named head coach of the Hornets last spring was from May, who left DSU after two seasons from 2011-to-13. May was recruited to Delaware State by Walker when he was a Hornet assistant. The South Haven, Mich., native averaged 5.9 points in 53 games, primarily as a reserve in his first two seasons at DSU. May played the season at Div. II St. Augustine s (N.C.), where he averaged 19.3 points per game; and was named to the All-CIAA First Team. May left St. Augustine s last summer and re-enrolled at Delaware State. He petitioned the NCAA to allow him to compete for the Hornets this season. May was allowed to practice but did not compete in DSU s first three games this season while the petition was being considered.

8 K WILL Delaware State guard Kendal Williams (sr.) has been recognized for his stellar play in his first season with the Hornets last year. Williams was named to the pre-season All- MEAC Third Team. He was among the MEAC leaders in three-point percentage last season, connecting on 29-of-69 attempts (.420). Williams was tops on the Hornets with 84 assists and ranked fourth in scoring at 8.2 points per game. This season, has appeared in all 14 games, starting the last seven. He is fifth among team regulars in scoring at 5.7 points per game and is second on the team with 36 assists. Williams scored a season-high 10 points vs. Rhode Island (Dec. 13). He tied his season-high with nine points (4-8 FGs) in his first start of the season at Wake Forest (Nov. 28). He also scored nine points vs. N. Texas (Nov. 19) and eight (4-4 FTs) in season-opening win at Penn (Nov. 15). The former Dover (Del.) High School star was a All-Maryland Junior College First Team and All-Region XX Second Team selection at Baltimore City Community College. He averaged 14.8 points and 4.9 assists (each a team high) during season and helped lead BCCC to overall record, a conference title and Region XX Tournament finals last season HORNET NEWCOMERS Delaware State s opening day roster featured five players who are new to the program, including one with prior Division I experience and a local star. Swingman Aric Dickerson (jr.; 6-6) briefly played at West Virginia University under Bob Huggins before transferring to Lee College in Texas. Dickerson was a standout at Lincoln Park H.S. in Chicago. Todd Hughes (fr.; 6-2) helped lead Delaware s Sanford School to a state championship. The Smyrna, Del., native was an All-State selection and 1000-point scorer during his scholastic career. Guard Quincy Tillinghast (fr.; 6-0) nailed more than 500 three-point field goals during his career at the School for the Performing Art in Cincinnati, OH, while swingman Kavon Waller (fr.; 6-5) was his district s Player-of-the-Year and an All-State selection as a senior at Virginia s Thomas Dale HS. Moscow, Russia native Artem Tavakalyan (fr.; 6-6) helped lead Florida Air Academy to a 26-2 overall record and state playoff berth as a senior in HOME COOKING DSU s Memorial Hall had been an unfriendly place for Hornet opponents in recent years. Despite seven home losses last season (7-7), the Hornets are a solid (.719) at home since the season. DSU was 8-3 at home during the season. The Hornets were 11-0 in front of the home crowd during the campaign and 9-1 in Memorial Hall during the , and seasons. The Hornets are in Memorial Hall vs. MEAC opponents (.776) since the campaign. The Hornets are 2-1 at home this season. DELAWARE STATE MEN S BASKETBALL NOTES HAYWOOD RETURNS TO EARLY SEASON FORM Sophomore guard DeAndre Haywood is coming off a career-high 25 points in the Hornets win over Cheyney is their last outing on Tuesday (Jan. 5). Haywood was nine-for-11 from the field and three-of-four from three-point territory in the contest. It was his first double-figure scoring game since four straight to start the season. Haywood came out the gate strong in this season. He topped the Hornets in scoring in each of the first three games, including 23 points vs. Penn in the season opener. He was eight-for-16 from the field and seven-of-10 at the free throw line in the Penn contest. He scored five points in the overtime, including two free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win. In addition, Haywood tallied five rebounds, four assists and a game-high four steals in 38 minutes of playing time in the opener. The MEAC thought enough of Haywood s performance at Penn to name him as its first Player-of-the-Week for the season. It also marked the first time he has received the honor. Haywood is fourth among Hornet regulars in scoring at 9.4 points per game this season. He is also tops on the team with 19 steals this season. Haywood was named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team after averaging 6.2 points in his debut season. He set career scoring highs in three consecutive games last season, highlighted by a game-high 20 points vs. Florida A&M on Feb. 17. He tallied 17 points vs. Bethune-Cookman in the previous contest (Feb. 15) and 13 against Savannah State the game before that (Feb. 10). Haywood hit 16 of 28 shots from the field during the stretch (.571). In the Florida A&M contest, Haywood was seven-for-12 from the field. He scored 19 points in the second half. He was fifth on the Hornets in scoring last season. ROAD WARRIORS Delaware State s men s basketball traveling party will spend plenty of time packing and unpacking this season. The Hornets are scheduled to log more than 24,600 miles by bus and plane to a total of 13 states and the District of Columbia. The schedule is highlighted by first-time trips to Hawai i and Oregon. The Hornets played at Hawai i on Dec. 2; and were back in the air less than three weeks later for a trip to Eugene, Ore., to face the Ducks (Dec. 20).
