Delaware State wrapped up a threegame home stand with a loss to North Carolina A&T in its last outing this past Monday. The Lady Hornets started quickly in the game, opening up a 14-3 lead on a three-pointer by Gennell Addison with 4:08 left in the first quarter. The Aggies outscored DSU 13-1 to close out the quarter to lead after 10 minutes. North Carolina A&T stretched its lead to by the end of the third quarter. NaJai Pollard, in her third game back after missing the previous six due to a knee injury, led the Lady Hornets with 13 points in the NCA&T contest. Lanayjha Ashe was the only other Delaware State player in double figures with 12 points. Arion Jackson pulled down a season-high nine rebounds to lead the Lady Hornets. For the season, Pollard is No. 1 on the team in scoring at 17.1 points per game and in rebounding at 6.8 per contest. The MEAC Preseason Player of -the-year, Pollard has three double-doubles this season and 23 in her career. Ashe is second on the Lady Hornets in scoring (10.4 ppg) and tops in assists (52). She s also second on the team with 13 three-point field goals. Hampton (4-9; 1-0 MEAC) has won its last two games, including a victory over Maryland- Eastern Shore in its MEAC opener last Saturday. Shayla Wright-Ponder came off the bench to lead the Lady Pirates with 17 points and eight rebounds in the game. K lynn Willis added 13 points (8-10 FTs) to the win for HU. For the season Alina Starr is tops on the team and 11th in the MEAC in scoring at 11.9 points per game. Starr is also second in the conference in assists at 4.2 per game. Monnazjea Finney-Smith is Hampton s leading rebounder at 7.1 per contest to rank eighth in the league. She s also No. 1 in the MEAC in three point field goals at 2.7 per game. 3 DELAWARE STATE WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES POLLARD SELECTED AS MEAC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR Delaware State junior forward NaJai Pollard was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year. All awards are voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors. Pollard led the MEAC in both scoring and rebounding in , averaging 18.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per contest. Her.571 field goal percentage was also the best in the conference, and she also tied for fifth in blocked shots (2.0 per game. She was seventh in the nation with 12 double-doubles last season, and Pollard also ranked among the top 25 nationally in offensive rebounding (4.0 per game) and made free throws (150). Last season the Hornets star forward was named First Team All- American by BOXTOROW. In addition, she was the MEAC Player of the Week four times, MEAC Defensive Player of the Week two times and was honored as D1 Women's Basketball HERO of The Week once. 4 HEAD COACH BARBARA BURGESS Former Lady Hornet star Barbara Burgess is in her third season as head coach at her alma mater. This is her second head coaching job. In her return to Delaware State during the , Burgess led the Lady Hornets to a fourwin improvement from the year before. Among the highlights in her first season as DSU head coach were road wins over Savannah State and Hampton, the two previous Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions. The Lady Hornets also posted impressive wins against Division I opponents Appalachian State, Wagner and Longwood last season. DSU President Harry L. Williams announced the appointment of Burgess as the school s ninth head coach on May 5, Her appointment marked the second time that a former Lady Hornet player has headed the DSU women s basketball program. Jackie Devane was head coach from after competing for the team from Barbara stood out among some outstanding candidates for the position, not just because she s a Lady Hornet alum, but because of her highly successful experience as a teacher of the game and recruiter, as well as her commitment to academics and community service, AD Perkins said. We believe Barbara will bring a high level of excellence back to the Lady Hornet program she helped to make so successful as a student-athlete. The first season under Burgess featured the Lady Hornets posting their highest overall (9) and conference (6) win totals since Her first victory resulted in a win over the Sun Belt Conference's Appalachian State in the final game of the Florida Atlantic Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 28. However, Burgess' most impressive victory featured DSU knocking off Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) powerhouse Hampton on the road on Feb. 29, This win not only snapped a 15-game slide to the Pirates, but it was Delaware State s first win at HU since a triumph on Feb. 28, Despite coming to a close with a loss to Florida A&M in the MEAC Tournament, freshman sensation NaJai Pollard garnered MEAC Rookie of the Year honors, leading the Lady Hornets in rebounding (8.3 rpg), blocks (51), double-doubles (8) and finishing second in scoring (11.6 ppg). As a team, DSU led the conference in free throw percentage (.726), along with finishing fifth in field goal percentage (.372), fourth in blocked shots per game (4.2) and seventh in steals per game (8.2). Burgess, who starred for the Lady Hornets from , most recently served as an assistant coach at Delaware State s highly successful MEAC rival Hampton University the past six seasons. While at Hampton, Burgess helped lead the Lady Pirates to five MEAC Tournament titles, five regular season crowns and six national championship tournament appearances. During Burgess tenure as an assistant coach, the Lady Pirates won a ME- AC-record five consecutive tournament championships ( ). Hampton posted an overall record of (.753), including an 88-8 mark (.917) in MEAC regular season play, in addition to winning 54 consecutive games against league opponents (including tournament games). We believe that Barbara s championship experience at Hampton, along with the intensity and passion she developed in her playing days with the Lady Hornets will greatly benefit our women s basketball program, Dr. Williams said. Prior to her time at Hampton, Burgess served one season as an assistant coach at Norfolk State University ( ). She was also the head women s coach at Virginia Union University from , posting a overall record. As a high school coach, she manned the sidelines for six years ( ) as the head women's basketball coach at Phoebus High School (VA). The Phantoms were in her tenure, making three trips to the Eastern Region tournament. From , Burgess was the head women's basketball coach at Huguenot High School (VA). She was named Dominion District Coach of the Year in 1997 after leading Huguenot to a 14-9 record. The following year, the Lady Falcons were runners-up in the Dominion District Tournament. Throughout her 14 years at the helm in the high school ranks, Burgess mentored several players who have gone on to play at the collegiate level, including former Howard University standout Essence Coggins (Huguenot). Burgess was a four-year Black College All-American for DSU ( ) on the court. She was named to the MEAC All-Rookie Team and ended her career with the Lady Hornets as the school s second all-time leading scorer with 1,807 points, a spot she currently still holds. During her sophomore season, she led the team in scoring (17.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg) and was named to the All-MEAC First Team. Her junior campaign featured leading Delaware State in scoring (17.1 ppg) on her way to another All-MEAC First Team selection. Burgess wrapped up career garnering DSU Female Athlete of the Year in , in addition to leading the Lady Hornets to the 1989 MEAC Tournament Championship game. Burgess graduated from Delaware State in 1990 with a bachelor s degree in Health and Physical Education and was inducted to the DSU Athletic Hall of Fame in She also received her master s degree in sports management from California (Pa.) University. Burgess is a native of Richmond, Va. and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

FGs LADY HORNETS STUNG BY INJURY BUG Injuries have played a key role in Delaware State s fortunes during the season. Two Lady Hornets expected to play key roles this season have been unable to contribute. Jamira Watkins, a 6-1 freshman forward from Paterson, N.J., is likely out for the season due to knee injury, while junior guard Yasmine Batch, a 5-9 transfer from Little Rock, Ark., (Fort Scott CC) has been out since the season opener at Temple on Nov. 10. In addition, junior forward NaJai Pollard missed six games and sophomore guard Gennell Addison eight this year as a result of injuries.
