3 Delaware State University Women s Basketball Game 2 Nov. 9 A WIN WOULD MEAN» The Hornets would be 1-1 for the first time since the season.» DSU s first road win since beating Florida A&M, 57-53, on Jan. 23, LAST TIME OUT... DSU fell in its season opener on the road to Old Dominion. In the loss, ODU s Stephanie Gardner poured in a career-high 21 points, while the Lady Monarchs outrebounded DSU, 56-50, along with totaling 31 secondchance points. From beyond the arc, meanwhile, ODU went 11-for-26 (.423), whereas DSU went 3-for-9 (.333). The bright spot for DSU offensively, on the other hand, featured three players finishing in double figures, led by guard Raven Bankston (8-of-12) and forward Tierra Hawkins (7-of-16) both totaling 18 points. Hawkins also added eight rebounds, while guard Raine Bankston chipped in with 11 (3-of-11) points and three assists. Also, turning in a solid performance was forward Deanna Harmon with a teamhigh 11 rebounds, to go along with nine (3-of-6) points. BANKSTON NAMED MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Monday afternoon, freshman Raven Bankston was named MEAC Rookie of the Week after totaling 18 (8-of-12) points, five rebounds and a steal in DSU s season loss at Old Dominion. The freshman out of Detroit, Mich. also went 2-for-3 (.666) from beyond the arc to lead the Lady Hornets. With this feat, Bankston is the first Hornet to earn this recognition since Tierra Hawkins garnered the award three times during the season, as she went on to be named MEAC Rookie of the Year. MILESTONE WATCH After scoring a team-high 18 points in DSU s loss at ODU last week, junior Tierra Hawkins pushed her career-point total mark to 986. With this performance, she is now 14 points shy of reaching 1,000. Last season, she finished fourth in the conference in scoring (17.1 ppg), seventh in rebounding (7.4 pg) and second in field goal percentage (.509). Her 529 points last season were the third most by any Hornet since the campaign. With these efforts, the Clinton, Md. native, earned Preseason All- MEAC Second Team honors. A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE The season for the Lady Hornets, which ended with a loss against Vandy in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, was one to remember. Despite the loss, DSU made its first trip ever to the Big Dance by way of defeating Morgan State, 55-42, to capture the program s lone MEAC Tournament Championship. In addition, forward Raquel Collier ( ) earned MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors, whereas head coach Ed Davis ( ) was named MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Coach. Holding down the top spot was defending regular season and conference tournament champions, Hampton (658), who received 20 firstplace votes. Additionally, Hampton s Alyssa Bennett was named Co-MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, along with FAMU s Jasmine Grace. Career wise, she sits 10th (210) on DSU s all-time assist list. RETURNERS DSU s floor general last season, point guard Jade Washington, returns for the Lady Hornets. Washington was tops on the club with 108 assists to rank fourth in the MEAC (3.5 ppg) last season. In addition, she recorded a team-high 54 steals in her first season in a Hornet uniform after coming over from Arizona Western. Rounding out the rest of the Hornets returning players are sophomore N Kayah Kersey and junior Coreenah Redden. 5 Delaware State University Women s Basketball Game 2 Nov. 9 FRESH FACES Delaware State s newcomers include standout twin sisters Raven and Raine Bankston out of Detroit, Mich. Also, in the backcourt, is the addition of sharpshooter Diamond Williams out of Newark, N.J. Forwards Tylinn Carter and Mi Queara Lewis, meanwhile, will look to make solid contributions in their first seasons in a Hornet uniform. Hailing from San Diego, Calif., by way of Serra High School, Carter averaged 14.1 points and 4.1 assists per game to help lead her squad to the Eastern League championship last season. In the case of Lewis, she averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds per game, to go along with shooting 85 percent from the line. As a senior at Digital Harbor High School (Baltimore, Md.), she led her team to a Division I title. In addition, walk-on freshman Kareena Pitts will compete for playing time down on the block. SISTER, SISTER Highly touted twin sisters, Raine and Raven Bankston, head into their first season looking to make significant impact. Coming out of high school, each ranked among the top 20 high school players in Michigan and helped lead John Glenn High School to city and district championships as seniors. In a game during their high school careers, they combined for 75 points. TOUGH ROAD AHEAD The schedule for the Lady Hornets will be a tough one, headlined by five NCAA Tournament teams from last season in Vanderbilt, Albany, No. 8 Maryland, West Virginia and defending regular season and conference tournament MEAC champions, Hampton. Williams introduced Tamika L. Louis, a former championship junior college head coach and Division I assistant coach, as the new head coach. In her first season, the Lady Hornets finished overall, including 6-10 in MEAC action to earn the ninth seed in the conference tournament. Nevertheless, DSU took down the eighth-seeded Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in the opening round, 55-44, to snap a five-year MEAC tournament skid. Meanwhile, forward Tierra Hawkins was able to garner Second Team All-MEAC honors by leading the Lady Hornets in scoring (17.1) and rebounding (7.4). Louis arrived at Delaware State with 14 years of coaching and recruiting experience on the NCAA Division I, Junior College and high school levels. Before accepting the position at DSU, she served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the season at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. As the Lady Hornets head coach, I will be a servant-leader and hope that my energy, dedication and work ethic will be infectious to the young ladies on the team. Louis added: We will establish a winning culture here with an expectation to excel in the classroom and on the court, resulting in MEAC championships. Just as important, we will develop future leaders who, upon graduation, will make an immediate impact in our global society and positively represent DSU. From , Louis was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for St. John s University, where she was in charge of organizing all recruiting initiatives, game scouting, overseeing player academic progress and of-court mentoring. Additionally, she was responsible for the development of the Red Storm guards, including Second Team All-Big East and All-American Shennieka Smith. Prior to her time at SJU, Louis served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of Illinois from where she was instrumental in signing the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked players in the 2009 class in the country, according to ESPN Hoop Girl and Blue Star rankings, in All-Americans Destiny Williams and Karisma Penn. From , she was the head women s basketball coach at Mott Community College in Flint, Mich., where she led her squad to a overall record during her tenure. The squad boasted a 16-0 conference record and was 27-7 overall en route to a NJCAA Region XII championship and bid to the NJCAA Tournament. For her efforts during this stellar season, Louis was named the Michigan Community College Athletic Association and Region XII Coach of the Year.
