Sunday will mark the second ever meeting with the Tigers, with the last meeting taking place back in November 2007, an Buckeye win at VCA. Friday marks the second meeting with Temple in as many years after the Buckeyes opened up with an win in Philadelphia a year ago. Tennessee State, located in Nashville, Tenn., finished 9-21 last season but return four starters and nine letterwinners, including leading scorer Tayla Foster (11.6 ppg). The Lady Tigers open their season Friday, Nov. 11 at Cleveland State before making the trip down I-71 to face the Buckeyes Sunday. Tennessee State defeated LeMoyne-Owen College, 78-60, in an exhibition Nov. 1. Junior forward and Columbus Northland native Destiney Gaston paced the Lady Tigers with 15 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Junior Samantha Prahalis was named Big Ten preseason co-player of the year in October. She finished third in the NCAA with 6.9 assists per game last season. OSU IN SEASON OPENERS Ohio State has won its last 16 season openers, including last year s win at Temple. The Buckeyes have not dropped a season opener since 1994 and a home opener since 1985, a loss to Texas. All-time, Ohio State is in seasonopening games. SNEAK PREVIEW Jim Foster s Buckeyes will feature somewhat of a new look this season compared to years past with a more guard-oriented attack. For the past eight years Ohio State has featured a dominate post player in All-Americans Jessica Davenport ( ) and Jantel Lavender ( ). And after recently losing Lavender to graduation and the WNBA along with departed seniors Brittany Johnson, Sarah Schulze and Alison Jackson the Buckeyes will now look to create more within the backcourt, with their defense and out in transition. We re going to play different, Foster said during Ohio State s media day. Our strength is in our guards, so we will play a lot more through them. That requires good guards and that s what we have. He s right. Back are three starters from last year s team that went and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second time in three years. Starters back include all-big Ten point guard Samantha Prahalis, Big Ten all-defensive guard Tayler Hill and center Ashley Adams, who earned a spot on last year s Big Ten all-freshman team. 6 HEAD COACH JIM FOSTER Jim Foster is in his 10th season at Ohio State and his 34th overall as a head coach in His collegiate experience consists of jobs at Ohio State, Vanderbilt and St. Joseph s (Pa.) universities. Throughout his coaching career, the Abington, Pa., native has posted a (.720) record and his squads have made 26 postseason appearances (25 NCAA tournaments), including 12 consecutive NCAA tournaments. His is the eighthwinningest active coach in Division I and is just the second collegiate coach - men s or women s at any level - to win 200 games at three different schools. At Ohio State, he has helped the Buckeyes qualify for a school-record nine consecutive NCAA tournaments and rank in the national Top 10 in four of the last the last six seasons. A four-time Big Ten coach of the year ( , 09), he led the Buckeyes to a record-setting sixth consecutive Big Ten regular season title and a second straight tournament title in 2010 while setting a program record with 31 wins. During the last seven seasons, Ohio State has the ninth-most wins (193) in Division I women s college basketball and is one of nine schools to win at least 20 games over the last nine years. Since he was hired, Foster has mentored seven Mc- Donald s High School All-Americans, six WNBA Draft picks and two State Farm/WBCA All-Americans in Jantel Lavender (2009, 10, 11) and Jessica Davenport (2005, 06, 07). In the process, he and his players have turned Value City Arena into one of the most intimidating venues for opposing teams as his Buckeyes have posted a remarkable record at home over the last seven years and a mark overall. But probably the most impressive statistic goes way beyond wins, tournament births and championships. Throughout his coaching career, Coach Foster has preached the importance of academics. And in addition to his players consistently earning high marks in the classroom, every student-athlete who has played for Foster at St. Joe s, Vanderbilt and Ohio State has gone on to earn their degree. Most recently, the women s basketball squad was honored once again with an APR (Academic Progress Rate) score in the top 10 percent of all Division I squads in the sport. Last season the Buckeyes went 24-10, captured their third straight Big Ten tournament title and advanced to their second Sweet 16 in three years -- but not before experiencing some bumps in the road. After starting the season 7-0 and ranked in the top 10, the Buckeyes dropped nine of their next 15 games to drop out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in 130 weeks. After many had written the Buckeyes off, Foster rallied his troops to win their next 11 games that took them all the way to the NCAA Sweet 16 where they eventually lost to No. 1 seed Tennessee. All-American Jantel Lavender would go on to become the first Big Ten player - men s or women s - to win Big Ten player of the year honors all four years and also earn WBCA All-America honors for the third year in a row. She broke numerous Ohio State and Big Ten records while becoming OSU s all-time leading scorer and rebounder and setting an NCAA record by scoring in double-figures in all 136 career games. Samantha Prahalis would earn second team all-big Ten honors, Tayler Hill was named to the all-defensive team while Ashley Adams earned a spot on the all-freshman team. In April 2011, Lavender was chosen 5th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA Draft.
