After notching three points and drawing a penalty kick that led to another goal in the two matches, Hess was named the BIG EAST s top freshman over the last week and was also named as a defender on TopDrawerSoccer s Team of the Week. Hess played well enough in her 54 minutes of action during her collegiate debut at Kansas to earn herself a starting assignment at Illinois State and did not disappoint. The Batavia, Illinois native scored the game s first goal in the fifth minute off a corner kick and looked to push the action up field offensively in her role as MU s left back. Hess, who played for Eclipse Select SC, is one of two freshman to see the pitch for Marquette this season along with starting keeper Maddy Henry. GOLDEN EAGLES CONTINUE TO GET IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM Twenty-five women on last year s 35-member team earned at least a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 during the academic year and were honored on the BIG EAST Conference All-Academic Team. That group includes three student-athletes who carried 4.0s through both semesters in redshirt freshman Courtney Dugan and juniors Caroline Fink and Kirsten Timmer. POWELL SPARKS THE MU OFFENSE Forward Darian Powell led Marquette in both 2014 and 2015 with seven goals in each of her first two seasons of action after sitting out both 2012 and 2013 with injuries. The La Porte City, Iowa native scored four of her seven goals in Marquette s final three regular season matches last season as MU defeated Villanova and Butler before falling at DePaul in overtime. Powell, who is working her way back from an offseason injury, made her 2016 debut by playing 11 minutes at Kansas on Aug. 21 and tallied her first goal of the year, the match winner, in a 2-1 victory at Illinois State on Aug. 25. MARQUETTE GOAL SCORERS VARIED IN 2015 The Golden Eagles return 92.9 percent (26 of 28 goals) of their goal scoring production from last season but finding consistent production was an issue at times late in the year. The Marquette offense was able to generate more than one goal on just two occasions in BIG EAST play after trouncing Creighton 5-1 in the league lid-lifter on Sept. 27. Head coach Markus Roeders hopes that the depth of MU s attacking midfielders and forwards will allow the offense to take a step forward in All-BIG EAST First Team selection Jacie Jermier is the lone goal scorer having departed the program, while Darian Powell, Marquette s leading goal scorer in each of the last two campaigns, is one of 10 returning scorers from last season. In addition to Powell s seven tallies, Liz Bartels, Molly Pfeiffer, Ashley Handwork and Morgan Proffitt each posted three goals in MU ONE OF MOST SUCCESSFUL CURRENT BIG EAST TEAMS SINCE 2005 Since entering the BIG EAST Conference in 2005, Marquette has proven to be among the conference s elite women s soccer programs. The bond that our players and coaches have amongst each other goes way beyond the soccer field. Players interact like sisters and form life-long friendships. As coaches, our roles expand beyond the field. We build an environment where every person is treated equally. We serve as coaches, friends, "father-like" figures and guardians. Our players know that they can rely and communicate with us at any time. Since the team spends so much time together and they enjoy each others company, it creates one big family atmosphere. The relationships and trust that is built throughout the years forms a lifetime connection to each other and the program. Family for us is not about whose blood you have but who you care about. Pride Pride is striving to preserve the tradition, foundation and history that was built by the strong women who were among the first to wear Marquette University on their shirts. They did it in order to pave the way for their future sisters fully knowing that their names might be forgotten, but ever willing to continue to provide the path in which today's women continue to walk upon. Our players take a lot of pride in being part of Marquette Women's Soccer and all it stands for. This program has built a strong history of success that goes beyond the soccer field. Playing and representing Marquette, respecting our former players, and honoring each of our families and friends is very important to us. Yes, winning is important, but how we prepare, interact and represent ourselves and Marquette every day is what we strive for. Excellence We strive for excellence. Whether it be in the classroom, in the community, on the field, or in life. We have built high standards and continue to live up to them. Excellence isn't measured in wins and losses but how we conduct ourselves by giving 100 percent at all times in everything we do. The players work very hard in the classroom and graduate prepared to take the next step in life. Our philosophy is that we always work hard and be consistent in our beliefs. Experiencing and playing at the highest level every day raises the bar for all of us and we embrace those standards. Tradition We are fortunate to have been recognized as a top 20 program consistently for nearly 10 straight years and that goes back to the committed, driven women that have come into the program and made Marquette a special place. They continue to carry the torch that was lit for them and they are very proud of that tradition and will continue to pass it along to the next generation of players and family members. Our team is only as strong as it's foundation and our tradition and the contributions made by every person involved with the program continues to grow stronger every day. *- Conference Regular Season Championship ^- Conference Tournament Championship

Proffitt was joined on the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team by classmate Liz Bartels. Proffitt was a NSCAA All-Northeast Region selection in 2015 after earning All-BIG EAST First Team honors on defense and was as a second team all-conference selection in The defender scored three goals as a junior and earned BIG EAST weekly recognition on three occasions, including a pair of defensive player of the week honors. She is the first MU player to be named BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year since Ally Miller in Bartels earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors as a junior in 2015 after recording three goals, including a pair of match winners, and four assists. She played mostly in the midfield last season, but spent much of 2014 up front on her way to All-BIG EAST First Team recognition as a sophomore. GOLDEN EAGLES WELCOME SEVEN NEWCOMERS IN 2015 Marquette s roster boasts seven new players this fall who hail from Nebraska and four Midwestern states, including Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and Ohio. The group contains a goalkeeper, Maddy Henry, three primary defenders, Mary Kate Simon, Emily Hess and Maura Weaver, as well as three midfielders/forwards in Erin Johnston, Abby Hess and Josie Fowler. Roeders on their signing: "It is a great blend of players with Maddy Henry being one of the top goalkeepers coming out of high school. She will be a freshman but her demeanor, skill-set and poise playing the position is beyond a player arriving at the college level. Maura Weaver, Emily Hess and Mary Kate Simon each provide a defensive presence, winning personalities, high energy levels and toughness, in addition to their willingness to get involved in the attack. Erin Johnston is a crafty and versatile midfielder who has been around our program the longest as the younger sister to rising senior Meegan Johnston. Despite her size, Josie Fowler brings a level of skill, creativity and attacking flair that is hard to stop. Abby Hess brings athleticism, speed and a goal scoring mentality that is truly unique and should flourish at our level." NEW WORLD CLASS INDOOR FACILITY TO HOUSE MU SOCCER A new indoor athletic performance center, which will combine indoor playing fields for Marquette s soccer and lacrosse programs, an indoor track, and a world-class athletic performance research facility was announced on Jan. 29, 2015 by MU President Dr. Michael R. Lovell. The facility will be located on the 800 block of Michigan Street and is expected to house offices and locker rooms for MU soccer. Through a strategic partnership with the NBA s Milwaukee Bucks, cutting-edge faculty and student research in sports performance, medicine, nutrition and rehabilitation will enhance the performance of Marquette student-athletes and professional athletes worldwide.
