The winner of Thursday s semifinal will play in the league title match, which is slated for Sunday, Nov. 5 at the home venue of the highest remaining seed. MARQUETTE SECURES 13TH BIG EAST TOURNAMENT BERTH The Golden Eagles own a pair of BIG EAST tournament crowns from 2012 and 2013 and have qualified for the league quarterfinals in all 13 of their years affiliated with the league (13-10 overall record entering Thursday s semifinal). MU has also reached the league s semifinals all but three years (10 times total) and has advanced to four league championship matches. Marquette fell at eventual College Cup semifinalist Georgetown in last year s league title contest after advancing to the finals on a semifinal overtime goal by Carrie Madden against St. John s. MADDEN PROVIDES SPARK TO MU OFFENSE Redshirt junior forward Carrie Madden s return to the starting eleven from an early season quad injury has paid dividends in conference play with her ability to generate scoring chances. She owns a pair of two-goal matches this season in conference play at DePaul and against Creighton and leads MU with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. The 2017 All-BIG EAST First Team selection also posted two assists in the BIG EAST quarterfinals against Xavier on Kylie Sprecher s match winner and Eli Beard s first goal. Through her first two years at Marquette, Madden played in a total of one match and did not record a point. That lack of playing experience didn t hinder her ability to contribute offensively in 2016 as Madden proved to be Marquette s most potent finisher. She led MU with six goals and 17 points in 2016, including four match winners. Madden scored against Butler on Oct. 23 in the 93rd minute to keep Marquette in the hunt for the BIG EAST regular season title and scored on a phenomenal finish behind her against St. John s in OT of the league tournament semifinals. Madden was named to the 2016 All-BIG EAST Championship Team and was the only MU player named to the 2017 All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. BEARD AND BUGAY STEP UP IN 2017 With the departure of last year s large senior class, the 2017 Golden Eagles need contributions from players like midfielders Eli Beard and Ryley Bugay in supporting roles. The pair stepped up in the win at Louisville on Sunday, Aug. 27 with their first goals of the year. Bugay s match winner, the first tally of her career, came on a penalty kick in the 51st minute and the redshirt junior leads MU in minutes played. Beard scored the day s final goal from 40 yards in the 69th minute to mark just her second goal since her 2014 freshman campaign. Bugay has made herself an invaluable member of MU s midfield this season, playing a role similar to that of 2016 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Morgan Proffitt. Bugay earned most valuable defensive player honors in the Marquette Invitational earlier this year and has been a mainstay at the top of MU s defense. Beard posted two goals in MU s 3-0 win over Xavier in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship on Oct. 29 and leads the squad with 45 shots this season. POWELL RETURNS FOR SIXTH SEASON Forward Darian Powell led Marquette in both 2014 and 2015 with seven goals after sitting out both 2012 and 2013 with injuries and leads MU in scoring once again as a sixth-year graduate student. Powell posted points in six of the squad s first eight matches and sits second the team with 14 points on five goals and a career-best four assists. Powell s overtime winner against Xavier on Oct. 14 leaves her alone in eighth in program history with 23 goals and was her 10th match winner, tying her for sixth all-time at MU with current assistant coach Ashley Bares. MU has appeared in the NCAA tournament in over half of its years of competition (13 of 24) and has earned 10 conference regular season titles and four league tournament crowns. In the program s 25th campaign, Marquette has posted an overall record of , including a mark of in Markus Roeders 22 years at the helm. SPRECHER EMERGING AT FORWARD Kylie Sprecher slid into the starting lineup on Aug. 27 at Louisville and produced immediately, posting points in four straight matches and earning a pair of BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades in the process. Sprecher, a freshman from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, earned offensive MVP honors at the Marquette Invitational for her play against CMU and Mercer and was honored by the BIG EAST on Sept. 4 as the league s freshman of the week. She then posted the match winner at Boston University on Sept. 8 and assisted Darian Powell s winner on Sept. 10 at Rhode Island. The 2017 BIG EAST All-Freshman Team selection also notched a career-high two assists on both of Carrie Madden s goals in MU s 2-0 win at DePaul on Oct. 5. MU AMONG MOST SUCCESSFUL BIG EAST TEAMS SINCE 2005 Since entering the BIG EAST Conference in 2005, Marquette has proven to be among the conference s elite women s soccer programs. The Golden Eagles have accumulated an overall record of since that time and a mark of in league action, which includes six regular season conference titles and a pair of tournament championships in 2012 and MU, which has missed the NCAA tournament just three times since its addition to the league, went a remarkable in BIG EAST play in the four seasons from HENRY CONTINUES LINE OF MULTI-YEAR STARTERS IN NET Maddy Henry has held strong in net during the early portion of her sophomore campaign and recorded a new career high with 15 saves in Thursday s scoreless draw with Illinois State. That mark is the highest single-match save total for an MU keeper since 2001 and tied for the fifth most in program history. Over the BU, URI and UWM matches, Henry saw 63 opponent shots after seeing 69 total in the first six matches of the year. She notched a then-career-high nine saves in the 2017 lid-lifter against No. 2 Stanford to earn her fourth career BIG EAST weekly accolade with mention on the league s honor roll on Aug. 21. She was also named the league s goalkeeper of the week on both Aug. 28 and Sept. 4 after helping the Golden Eagles to four-straight shutouts. All told, the shutout streak lasted 541:44 (of which she played 527:43) as Marquette held opponents off the scoreboard from Aug. 20-Sept. 10. Henry joined an exclusive club of Marquette goalkeepers last season as just the fourth primary starter since MU s entrance to the BIG EAST Conference for the 2005 campaign. The previous three keepers started in net for the length of their entire MU careers and each earned multiple All-BIG EAST accolades. Henry, a sophomore from Omaha, Nebraska, hopes to join Laura Boyer ( ; Overland Park, Kansas) and Natalie Kulla ( ; St. Louis) as goalkeepers from America s Heartland to experience success in Blue and Gold. Amanda Engel ( ; Centennial, Colorado) graduated in 2016 and was a four-year starter and two-time All-BIG EAST selection. Player MP-MS Min. GA GAA Sv. W-L-T Sho. The bond that our players and coaches have amongst each other goes way beyond the soccer field. Players interact like sisters and form life-long friendships. As coaches, our roles expand beyond the field. We build an environment where every person is treated equally. We serve as coaches, friends, "father-like" figures and guardians. Our players know that they can rely and communicate with us at any time. Since the team spends so much time together and they enjoy each others company, it creates one big family atmosphere. The relationships and trust that is built throughout the years forms a lifetime connection to each other and the program. Family for us is not about whose blood you have but who you care about. Pride Pride is striving to preserve the tradition, foundation and history that was built by the strong women who were among the first to wear Marquette University on their shirts. They did it in order to pave the way for their future sisters fully knowing that their names might be forgotten, but ever willing to continue to provide the path in which today's women continue to walk upon. Our players take a lot of pride in being part of Marquette Women's Soccer and all it stands for. This program has built a strong history of success that goes beyond the soccer field. Playing and representing Marquette, respecting our former players, and honoring each of our families and friends is very important to us. Yes, winning is important, but how we prepare, interact and represent ourselves and Marquette every day is what we strive for. Excellence We strive for excellence. Whether it be in the classroom, in the community, on the field, or in life. We have built high standards and continue to live up to them. Excellence isn't measured in wins and losses but how we conduct ourselves by giving 100 percent at all times in everything we do. The players work very hard in the classroom and graduate prepared to take the next step in life. Our philosophy is that we always work hard and be consistent in our beliefs. Experiencing and playing at the highest level every day raises the bar for all of us and we embrace those standards. Tradition We are fortunate to have been recognized as a top 20 program consistently for nearly 10 straight years and that goes back to the committed, driven women that have come into the program and made Marquette a special place. They continue to carry the torch that was lit for them and they are very proud of that tradition and will continue to pass it along to the next generation of players and family members. Our team is only as strong as it's foundation and our tradition and the contributions made by every person involved with the program continues to grow stronger every day MARQUETTE WOMEN S SOCCER GAME NOTES

The Golden Eagles were outshot 25-1 in the 1-0 win at BU as Kylie Sprecher scored the match winner in the 24th minute on MU s lone shot. Marquette applied greater pressure on its opponent in Sunday s win at URI, outshooting the Rams with a 11-6 edge in corner kicks. With Carrie Madden out for both matches and Jamie Kutey still hobbled over the weekend, MU received a goal and an assist from both Sprecher and Darian Powell, plus the first career goal from defender Bri Jaeger at URI. Defensively redshirt freshman Mary Kate Simon started alongside redshirt sophomore Bri Jaeger in their first career starts, while redshirt junior Heather Handwork also returned to the pitch after not playing last year.
