Southern Conference teams are in nonconference home games. Western Carolina s Larry Hunter and Wofford s Mike Young both rank among the top 15 winningest coaches in league history. The 2017 Southern Conference tournament will be held March 3-6 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. Player of The Week Player of the Week Julian Eleby, VMI, Sr., G VMI s Julian Eleby has been named the Southern Conference Men s Basketball Player of the Week for all games played Dec The senior scored a game-high 31 points as VMI topped Charleston Southern (88-83) last week. The Fayetteville, N.C., native connected on 9-of-13 fi eld goal attempts and was 5-of-9 from 3-point range in the win. He added fi ve rebounds, three assists and a steal for the Keydets. Eleby scored 27 of his 31 points in the second half, which tied for the third-highest scoring output in a half in school history. Eleby ranks seventh in the league in scoring (14.6 ppg) and ranks fourth in the SoCon in made 3-pointers per contest (3.0 3fg). Other top performers in the Southern Conference included The Citadel s Preston Parks, ETSU s T.J. Cromer, Furman s Devin Sibley, Mercer s Ria n Holland, UNCG s James Dickey, Samford s Christen Cunningham, Chattanooga s Casey Jones and Wofford s Eric Garcia. 2 Conference News and Notes Close Encounters Southern Conference teams are 6-12 this season in nonconference games that have been decided by one possession or went into overtime. League teams were 14-7 last year in onepossession games and have gone since the start of the season. Familiar Faces Southern Conference teams returned 84 lettermen for the season. Eight of 10 schools boast at least eight returnees from last season. League teams averaged 8.4 returners from Conference teams return 28 starters from last year, an average of 2.8 per team. Furman, UNCG and Chattanooga each return four starters from last season. Six of the 10 members from the 2016 Coaches All-Southern Conference team return for Head Coaches All 10 Southern Conference head coaches return to the bench in the league for The current head coaches have a combined 42 years of experience in the SoCon. Wofford head coach Mike Young ranks fourth on the league s all-time wins list. Young has tallied 237 wins with the Terriers and needs just seven victories to move past Maryland s Burton Shipley into third place. Young was named the 2015 Coach of the Year by both the league s media and head coaches. Western Carolina s Larry Hunter has 175 victories at WCU and ranks 14th on the league s all-time wins list. One-Possession Games Southern Conference teams played 90 league games during the regular season. Twenty-one games (23 percent) were decided by one possession or went into overtime. In 2015, the league had 23 of 90 (26 percent) conference games decided by one possession. In 2014, the league had 17 of 88 (19 percent) conference games decided by one possession. In 2013, the league had 30 of 108 (28 percent) conference games decided by one possession. In 2012, the league had 32 of 108 (30 percent) conference games decided by one possession. Sudden Impact Wofford s Fletcher Magee was named the league s Freshman of the Year by the league s coaches in Magee joined Ian Chadwick (1998) and Karl Cochran (2012) as the only Terriers to win the award. MEAC Southern Conference News and Notes Nonconference Scheduling Nine of the 10 SoCon teams are scheduled to participate in exempt tournaments this year. SoCon teams will take part in the Holy City Hoops Classic (The Citadel), Sanford Pentagon Showcase (ETSU), CBE Hall of Fame Classic (Furman), Savannah Invitational (Mercer), High Point Tournament (UNCG), San Diego Classic (Samford), Maui Jim Maui Invitational Mainland (Chattanooga), Global Sports Invitational (Western Carolina) and Gulf Coast Showcase (Wofford). Annual Leaders Furman led the league in scoring defense as the Paladins allowed just 66.7 points per game last season. Wofford led the SoCon in fewest points allowed for four straight seasons ( ). Furman was the last team other than Wofford to lead the league in scoring defense, back in Wofford led the league in 3-point fi eld-goal percentage (.408). It was the highest percentage by a SoCon team since Davidson connected on 41.7 percent of its 3-pointers during the season. Mercer led the SoCon in rebounding margin (+8.8). It is the highest margin in the league since College of Charleston was +9.0 in Postseason Performance A Southern Conference-record six teams advanced to the postseason in Chattanooga earned the league s automatic bid to the NCAA tourney, where the Mocs fell to Indiana in the fi rst round. UNCG and WCU both earned bids to the CBI. The Spartans knocked off Houston Baptist at home before dropping a fi ve-point decision (72-67) at Ohio. Western Carolina was eliminated in the fi rst round at Vermont. Furman and Mercer were accepted to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The Paladins held off Louisiana-Monroe in their fi rst game before falling to Louisiana. Mercer dropped its fi rst game of the tournament at Coastal Carolina. ETSU advanced to the semifi nals of the inaugural Vegas 16 tournament. After topping Louisiana Tech, the Bucs fell to Oakland University. Preseason Honors Chattanooga was picked to win the championship in preseason balloting conducted by the league s head coaches. The Mocs return four starters and seven lettermen from last season s team that went ETSU was picked second and earned two fi rst-place votes, while Mercer was tabbed third. Chattanooga s Tre McLean was named the league s preseason Player of the Year and was joined on the preseason all-conference team by teammates Casey Jones and Justin Tuoyo. Seven of the league s 10 teams had at least one player on the preseason all-conference team. Making The Grade In addition to achieving success on the court, SoCon men s basketball teams boast impressive academic credentials. In the latest data released by the NCAA, in May 2016, Southern Conference men s basketball teams posted an Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 961. It was the eighth consecutive year that the SoCon average was higher than the national rate. Conference Tournament The 2017 Southern Conference Tournament presented by General Shale will be held March 3-6 in Asheville, N.C., at the U.S. Cellular Center. This year s tournament fi nal will be Monday, March 6, at The oldest conference tournament in the nation, the SoCon tournament was fi rst held in 1921, and 2017 marks the 97th year of the postseason classic.
