3 SAMFORD GAME NOTES GETTING STARTED The Samford University basketball team will conclude play in its critical two-game Southern Conference-opening road trip Monday at 6 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs meet the Western Carolina Catamounts in a key early-conference contest to be held at the Ramsey Center. Samford (10-4, 1-0 SoCon) enters the matchup riding the positive momentum of a three-game winning streak. Since dropping a hard-fought road decision at No. 21-ranked Florida State on Dec. 19, the Bulldogs have rattled off consecutive victories against Florida A&M, 83-63, Fort Valley State, 94-74, and UNCG, Samford has been victorious in seven of its last eight outings and owns a solid 5-3 mark in road games this season. Saturday s SoCon-opening win at UNCG proved to be the Bulldogs first all-time time triumph at the Greensboro Coliseum and their first road victory over the Spartans since Jan. 6, DENZEL-DYSON NAMED SOCON PLAYER OF THE WEEK Samford junior Demetrius Denzel-Dyson (3D) was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 29, for his performance during all games played Nov , the league office announced. He averaged 22.7 points and 7.0 rebound per outing and shot 54.5-percent (12-of-22) from 3-point range in games against Cincinnati, Nicholls State and Bethune-Cookman. Denzel-Dyson also led the team with a brilliant 61-percent shooting mark from the field. In a home matchup against Nicholls State, he scored a careerhigh 40 points on 15-of-20 shooting from the field. His 40 points proved to be the most scored by a SoCon player this season as he played 44 of the team s 50 minutes and added two assists and a pair of steals. A 6-foot-5 shooting guard, Denzel-Dyson also posted a double-double against Nicholls State with 11 rebounds and shot a brilliant 7-of-11 from 3-point range. Denzel-Dyson scored in double figures in all three games of the week by tallying a team-high 14 points at Cincinnati and 14 points at home against Bethune-Cookman. The Bulldogs native of Covington, Tenn., also pulled down at least five rebounds in every game from his guard position. RETURNING STARTERS The Bulldogs boast two returning starters this season in junior point guard Christen Cunningham and sophomore center Wyatt Walker. Cunningham has started every game of his illustrious three-year career at the point guard position and has already made 79 starts at Samford. Last season, the Georgetown, Ky., native averaged 14.4 points and 3.9 assists per game. Christen s a natural-born point guard and he really knows how to run a team, said Samford head coach Scott Padgett. He does a great job of finding the open man, and when you need a bucket, he has the talent and ability to go score it for you. Since last season, he s really done a good job of becoming more of a leader. We ve had seniors here in his last two years, so now he s one of the oldest guys on the team and definitely the leader. Walker, the Bulldogs 6-foot-9 All-Southern Conference Freshman Team performer from a year ago, is definitely using this season to build upon his stellar rookie campaign. Last year, the Jacksonville, Fla., native averaged 10.6 points and 6.0 rebounds. He also led the team with a 58.1 shooting percentage in 22 minutes per contest. THREE TRANSFERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE THIS YEAR Samford bolstered an already talented roster this season with the addition of senior forward Terry Brutus. Brutus joined the Bulldogs from Ole Miss where he accompanied the Rebels on two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Coming out of high school, Brutus was ranked as a three-star recruit by both Rivals.com and ESPN.com, while averaging 17 points and nine rebounds as a senior. Brutus was eligible to compete immediately for Samford this season as a graduate transfer. He joined redshirt juniors Demetrius Denzel-Dyson and Alex Thompson on the court after they were forced to sit out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. Prior to the campaign, Denzel-Dyson transferred from UMass, while Thompson became a Bulldog after spending the previous two seasons at Auburn. Out of high school, the 6-foot-5 shooting guard, Denzel-Dyson, proved to be a three-star recruit by both Rivals and ESPN.com. He was also ranked as the No. 85 shooting guard in the country and No. 17 overall in the state of Tennessee by ESPN Scouting Services. As a senior, Denzel-Dyson averaged 23.8 points and 10.4 rebounds at Covington (Tenn.) High School. Thompson is proving this season to be a 6-foot-8 forward who can stretch the floor with his 3-point shooting ability. During his time at Houston Academy, he averaged 25.0 points, 12.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.6 blocks and 2.0 steals per game and his 25.0 points per game was tops among all 2A all-state candidates and his 12.8 rebounds were second-most. Thompson came out of high school as the Dothan Eagle Player of the Year, Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 2A Player of the Year, and as one of three finalists for Alabama Mr. Basketball. He scored over 2,000 points in his high school career. I think these guys take the talent level of the team up a notch, first of all, Padgett said. Then, if you look at their size, strength and length, it s another level than what we ve had. They are all three guys who will help us in different ways this

4 SAMFORD GAME NOTES RETURNING LETTERWINNERS Also this season, Samford boasts four talented returning letterwinners in Eric Adams, Alex Peters, Gerald Smith and Tanner Tapp. Adams and Peters are both being asked to play key roles in the frontcourt for the Bulldogs this season, while Smith and Tapp are providing critical depth in Samford s backcourt. INCOMING FRESHMEN Padgett and his staff continued to make major waves in the recruiting scene during the early signing period last season, as the Bulldogs added highly-acclaimed talents James Boone, Triston Chambers, Justin Hopkins and Josh Sharkey to their roster as members of the 2016 signing class. I am very excited about this class, said Padgett. We are bringing in shooting, speed, toughness and athleticism, and this group will win a lot of games during the next four years at Samford. SAMFORD PICKED SEVENTH IN SOCON PRESEASON POLLS The SoCon released its annual preseason rankings on Oct. 26, and Samford was slated seventh by both the coaches and media, it was announced by the league office. Chattanooga, which opened its season with a 13-point road victory at Tennessee on Nov. 4, was tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the SoCon title for the second consecutive season. ETSU was slotted second (74) and received two first-place votes. Wofford (57) edged Mercer (55) for third place in the preseason balloting. Furman and UNCG tied for fifth place with 50 points apiece. Samford was picked seventh (32), while Western Carolina came in eighth (20). VMI (19) and The Citadel (13) rounded out the poll. WHAT S COMING UP NEXT? Following Monday s SoCon showdown at Western Carolina, the Samford University basketball team will next be in action Thursday at 7 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs begin a crucial three-game conference homestand against the Furman Paladins to be held at the Pete Hanna Center. Samford will then play host to Wofford on Saturday at 6 p.m., and Mercer on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN3. THE LAST TIME OUT Samford defeated the UNCG Spartans in the Greensboro Coliseum for the first time in school history Saturday as the Bulldogs opened Southern Conference play in resounding fashion with a decisive road victory. Samford s win proved to be its first at UNCG since Jan. 6, 2011, on campus at Fleming Gym. Samford extended its winning streak to three and moved to 7-1 in its last eight games dating back to Nov. 27. The Bulldogs lone loss during the stretch occurred on the road at No. 21-ranked Florida State, Samford owns a solid 5-3 record when playing away from home this season. The Bulldogs snapped a four-game losing streak against UNCG. All-time, Samford owns a 10-9 record versus the Spartans. Junior guard Demetrius Denzel-Dyson led all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. The Bulldogs sharpshooting native of Covington, Tenn., drained a trio of 3-point baskets and pulled down six rebounds. Samford s starting guards accounted for 44 of the team s 73 points as junior point guard Christen Cunningham and freshman shooting guard Triston Chambers both added 14 points apiece. Chambers played a huge role for the Bulldogs as he knocked down a game-high four 3-point baskets on six attempts. Samford s valuable shooter also added a rebound and an assist in 25 minutes of action. Cunningham, who is now just 41 points shy of reaching the prestigious 1,000-point plateau, scored his 14 in 37 minutes of playing time. He also handed out seven assists and grabbed three rebounds. Already this season, Cunningham has registered 90 assists for an average of 6.4 per outing. Samford s dynamic junior floor general from Georgetown, Ky., is currently well on pace to eclipse the Bulldogs school record of 151, which was achieved by Raijon Kelly in the season. Samford s Wyatt Walker pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and added seven points, three blocks, two assists and a pair of steals. Junior forward Alex Thompson chipped in with eight points, three steals and two boards. DOGS SEE GENERATIONAL SCORING vs. COLONELS Marking the most points scored in a Bulldog basketball game in over 40 years, Nicholls State rallied back from a 19-point second-half deficit to upend Samford, (2OT), in the final matchup of the 2016 San Diego Classic on Nov. 27. The combined 209 points scored proved to be the most in a Samford game since Feb. 21, 1976, when the Bulldogs dropped a decision on the road at Denver. It also marked the most points scored in a Samford home game since March 3, 1975, when the Bulldogs held off Georgia Southern, , in regulation. 3D S HISTORIC GAME The Bulldogs Demetrius Denzel-Dyson (3D) led all scorers with a career-high 40 points on 15-of-20 shooting from the field against Nicholls State on Nov. 27. He also posted a double-double with 11 rebounds and shot a sizzling 7-of-11 from 3-point range. Denzel- Dyson played 44 of the team s 50 minutes and added two assists and a pair of steals. His performance is still ranked as the seventh highest scoring output in the nation this season. SAMFORD S WALKER IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS The Bulldogs Wyatt Walker heads into Monday s game ranked seventh in the nation with eight double-doubles this season. Walker is also ranked No. 15 in the country in defensive rebounds per contest (7.5), No. 14 in total rebounds (147) and 19th in the nation in rebounds per game

5 SAMFORD GAME NOTES SCORING IS KEY Since the beginning of last season, Samford has registered a 13-2 record when scoring at least 80 points. On Nov. 14, the Bulldogs opened the season with a dominant road victory at San Diego and turned in a 46.9-percent shooting performance from the field, including a welcome 10-of-25 (40 percent) outing from 3-point range. On Wednesday, Samford cruised to a home victory against the Fort Valley State Wildcats in a nonconference matchup held in the Pete Hanna Center. PADGETT IN HIS THIRD SEASON Samford head coach Scott Padgett is in his third season at the helm of the Bulldogs. Padgett currently owns a record at Samford and is coming off the school s winningest season in seven years, dating back to the campaign. Last year, the Bulldogs compiled an impressive 10-5 record in non-conference play and registered a pivotal road victory at Nebraska. The win proved to be Samford s first triumph against a Big Ten opponent in school history. I m really excited about where we re at right now, said Padgett recently. We still have a long way to go, but I think we re on target to where we wanted to be in year three. We have a team that s right there talent-wise and that will be able to compete. I think Samford fans will be happy to come watch the team this season. CHAMBERS CAREER DAY Samford s Triston Chambers turned in a career performance against Nicholls State on Nov. 27. The Bulldogs true freshman sharpshooter from Cold Springs, Ala., scored a personal-best 24 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. All six of his field goals came from 3-point range as he finished 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Chambers also handed out five assists for Samford. DOUBLE DOWN Samford s Wyatt Walker has recorded a double-double in eight of the Bulldogs 14 games this season. On Nov. 27 against Nicholls State, Walker posted a 12-point, 10-rebound performance in the Pete Hanna Center. Last season as a true freshman, he finished the campaign with four total double-doubles. CUNNINGHAM S ASSIST FRENZY On Nov. 27, in the Bulldogs heartbreaking home loss to Nicholls State, junior point guard Christen Cunningham handed out a career-high 13 assists. Last year, Samford s dynamic floor general became the first player in school history to record backto-back seasons with at least 125 assists. Walker averaged a double-double as the Bulldogs sophomore center finished the stretch with 30 rebounds and 27 points, both team highs. Walker paced Samford with 16 points and 16 rebounds in the Bulldogs victory on the road at

6 SAMFORD GAME NOTES SCOUTING THE COMPETITION Western Carolina (5-9, 0-1 SoCon) heads into Monday s game with aspirations of bouncing back from Saturday s home loss to preseasonconference favorite Chattanooga. In the defeat, Western Carolina placed three scorers in double-figures led by redshirt junior Haboubacar Mutombo who scored 15 points. Junior Devin Peterson added 11 points off the bench while freshman Adam Sledd continued his strong play of late with 10 points and eight rebounds. The Catamounts struggled to score the ball as they shot just 33.9 percent for the game including 33.3 percent (9-27) in the first half and 34.5 percent (10-29) in the second period. Western Carolina won the rebounding battle (38-31) but holding onto the ball once again proved to be a problem as the Mocs forced 17 turnovers compared to 14 of their own. After falling behind 2-0 after Chattanooga s opening possession, the Catamounts began a 14-3 run to take their largest lead of the game. The Mocs responded with a 14-2 run of their own which gave Chattanooga the lead with 6:01 left in the first. Western Carolina kept it close for the remainder of the opening half but a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left gave the Mocs a lead at the break. Chattanooga opened the second half with a layup to go ahead by 10 points and they would hold a double-digit lead for most of the period. Western Carolina cut the lead to eight on four separate occasions but that would be as close as the Catamounts would come. An 8-0 run by the Mocs late in the second half gave Chattanooga its largest lead of the game, 60-42, with 4:06 left to play. The Mocs would coast down the stretch taking the victory. The Catamounts leading scorer this season is Mutombo with 10.2 points per game. Marc Gosselin is currently Western Carolina s top rebounder with an average of 6.6 per outing, while Peterson is pacing the Catamounts with 38 assists this year. THE ALL-TIME SERIES - - SAM. vs. WESTERN CAROLINA On Monday, the Bulldogs will square off against Western Carolina for the 18th time in school history. The Catamounts currently own a 10-7 advantage in the all-time series, including a 7-1 mark when playing at home in the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, N.C. Last season, the teams split the annual home-and-home series with each team winning on its home court. Samford tallied an victory at the Pete Hanna Center on Jan. 16, 2016, while Western Carolina later earned a win in Cullowhee on Feb. 13. Two years ago, during the campaign, the Bulldogs swept the Catamounts and won in the Ramsey Center for the only time in school history as they posted a road victory on Feb. 5, WALKER NAMED SOCON PLAYER OF THE MONTH Samford s Wyatt Walker was named the Southern Conference Player of the Month on Dec. 5, after the Bulldogs sophomore center from Jacksonville, Fla., tallied seven double-doubles in all seven games in November. Walker averaged 14.3 points and 13.1 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs and shot 55 percent from the floor. At the time, his seven double-doubles led the nation, while his 13.1 rebounds per contest ranked fourth. Samford s Walker scored a season-high 19 points in a win over Bethune-Cookman on Nov. 26, in just 20 minutes of action and he recorded a season-high 16 rebounds a week earlier in a win at Campbell. KNOCKING DOWN THE THREE Heading into Monday s SoCon road test at Western Carolina, the Bulldogs boast four players shooting at least 38.5 percent from 3-point range this season, including junior guard Demetrius Denzel-Dyson (3D), who is shooting a sizzling 51.6 percent from beyond the arc. Denzel-Dyson is ranked No. 6 in the nation in 3-point field-goal percentage at 51.6, while Samford is ranked No. 23 in the country in the category at 40.2 percent. Along with Denzel-Dyson s remarkable 3-point shooting percentage, the Bulldogs Triston Chambers owns a 46.2 mark, while Alex Thompson is shooting 38.5 percent from beyond the arc. In , just Padgett s second season at the helm, Samford vastly improved under his leadership and registered its best win total in six years, dating back to With talented sophomore point guard Christen Cunningham and All-SoCon performers Darius Jones-Gibson, Matt Rose and Wyatt Walker leading the way, the Bulldogs opened the season with a brilliant 5-1 record and knocked off Nebraska on the road, 69-58, in Lincoln, Neb. Samford s double-digit victory on the road at Nebraska proved to be the school s first triumph against a Big 10 opponent. Additionally, the Bulldogs finished the season with a solid 10-5 record against non-conference opponents. Following his inaugural campaign as the Bulldogs head coach, Padgett was named a finalist for the 2015 Joe B. Hall award, which is presented annually to the top firstyear coach in college basketball. Padgett, during his first season as head coach at Samford University, compiled 13 wins and six SoCon victories with the Bulldogs. Boasting a roster comprised of just three seniors and a trio of juniors, Padgett guided his young Bulldogs to early success in his initial season heading the program. In 2015, Samford s Jones-Gibson was named a Third- Team All-SoCon performer, while Cunningham and Evan Taylor both earned SoCon All-Freshman Team honors. With a roster featuring five sophomores and four true freshmen in , the future proved to be bright for the Bulldogs basketball team. The Samford University basketball team completed Padgett s first season as head coach with a overall record. The Bulldogs steadily improved throughout the campaign and rattled off a five-game winning streak midway through the SoCon season. Padgett, a Louisville, Ky., native was a first-round draft pick selected 28th overall by the Utah Jazz in 1999 and spent eight years in the NBA. The 6-foot-9 forward recorded 1,142 points in four years with the Jazz before spending the next two seasons with the Houston Rockets. He played the campaign with the New Jersey Nets. Padgett began the season with the Rockets before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, where he finished out his career. During his time at Kentucky from , Padgett played for legendary head coaches Rick Pitino and Tubby Smith. Padgett helped lead the Wildcats to the 1998 NCAA Championship, where he was named to the NCAA All-Final Four team, as well as the NCAA All-East BASKETBALL QUICK FACTS
