Lutz is in his 20th season at The Rock, having spent the last four as the associate head coach and the last eight as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach. Lutz has been a member of the coaching staff for eight of SRU s PSAC West titles. Chris Weibel is in his second season as the head coach at Clarion and his 13th overall season as a member of the Golden Eagle staff. Weibel spent 11 seasons as an assistant coach before being promoted to head coach. He led Clarion from a 2-9 record in 2014 to a 7-4 mark in 2015 in his first season at the helm of the program. Weibel is 0-1 against Slippery Rock and is facing Shawn Lutz for the first time as a head coach. MILK JUG GAME Slippery Rock and Clarion began playing for the Milk Jug trophy in 2010 when the schools, separated by less than 60 miles, decided to add an additional element to the rivalry. The jug is painted half white with a green S on one side and half gold with a blue C on the other side. Since the inception of the trophy, Slippery Rock has won it all six times by a combined score of and an average margin of 22 points per game. NATIONAL RANKINGS Slippery Rock was ranked as high as No. 9 earlier this season and was ranked in the AFCA Division II national poll for 15 straight weeks before falling out last week. The Rock were at least mentioned as receiving votes for 23 straight weeks dating back to the 2014 season, but are not receiving votes this week to end that streak. The complete Division II polls are on page 10 of these notes. Rock Football Game Notes - 1

The Rock put up 482 yards of offense with 308 rushing yards and 174 passing yards. Clarion managed 237 total yards with 213 passing yards and 24 rushing yards. SRU had five players with at least nine carries for at least 30 yards in the game. Shamar Greene rushed just 11 times, but went for 82 yards. Isiah Neely added 68 yards, while Julian Durden chipped in 64 and two touchdowns, Dominic Dingle added 56 yards and one score and Dante Nania rushed for 30 yards. Nania also completed nine passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Two of those TD tosses went to Milly Raye, who finished with 69 receiving yards. Jaimire Dutrieuille added 51 yards and one score in the receiving game and returned a punt 91 yards for a TD. All four starters on the defensive line had at least a half sack, led by Marcus Martin with two sacks and Cody Conway with 1.5 sacks. Titus Howard finished with a team-high six tackles, three pass breakups and returned one interception 17 yards for a touchdown. Connor Simmons completed 16-of-40 passes for 213 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Clarion. He was sacked five times. Matt Lehman caught six passes for 48 yards and one score and Kevin Genevro caught four balls for 76 yards and one TD. LAST WEEK FOR SLIPPERY ROCK The hits kept coming for a Slippery Rock team that has seen its expectations decimated by injuries in The Rock lost both its first string and second string quarterbacks to injuries, but rallied from down in the second half to take a lead with just 57 seconds remaining against Edinboro. A pair of pass interference calls, including one with no time left on the clock, aided Edinboro in putting together a scoring drive that ended with a touchdown pass from the two-yard line on an untimed play to end the game. The penalties were a problem all day for SRU, which was called for 15 penalties for 130 yards. The biggest of those penalties was a targeting call and first half ejection of Titus Howard. With Howard off the field and SRU down two starters in the secondary, Edinboro wisely attacked that side of the field and scored 14 points through the air in the second quarter. The call was overturned at halftime and Howard was allowed to retun to the game, but the halftime margin would prove costly. Augustus Necastro had only been dressing this year in the case of an emergency and was planning to redshirt, but when both Don King III and Nathaniel Musselman were injured, Necastro was forced into action early in the third quarter. He responded by leading the team to 22 straight points and going 17-of-22 for 187 yards with two touchdowns, a 2-point conversion and no turnovers. The statistics from the game are hard to believe knowing the outcome. The Rock outgained Edinboro , held the Fighting Scots to just 19 rushing yards and picked off QB Jake Sisson five times. They also posted a 10-minute edge in time of possession, but a kickoff return for a TD, 10 points off turnovers and a couple short fields were enough to give Edinboro the margin it needed. Isiah Neely had 204 total offensive yards with 135 rushing yards and one score and five catches for 69 yards. Drew Scales caught eight passes for 78 yards and one TD and Marcus Johnson caught four passes for 55 yards with one TD. He also caught the two-point conversion.

3 KYLE HALL / ROCK DEFENSE TIE RECORDS The five interceptions recorded by the Slippery Rock defense last week against Edinboro tied a program record for the most in a single-game, a feat that has now been accomplished four times in school history. From an individual standpoint, Kyle Hall, who started for the injured Kevin Green at safety, came down with three interceptions to tie a singlegame school record. That feat has now been accomplished four times in program history as well. Derrick Fulmore and Bob Vernick each had one interception last week as well. LAST WEEK FOR CLARION Clarion went on the road and put a scare into No. 13 Indiana (Pa.), leading at halftime and maintaining a lead until late in the third quarter before the Crimson Hawks scored 28 points in the final 19 minutes of the game to win Indiana posted 594 yards of offense in the game, including 411 rushing yards and 183 passing yards. Clarion rushed for 89 yards and threw for 125 for 214 total yards. Jeff Clemens completed 11-of-32 passes for 125 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Kyle Evans rushed for 112 yards and one score with most of that coming on a 68-yard TD run. Greg Leonard was the leading receiver with three catches for 51 yards. Jacob Craig led the defense with 16 total tackles and one fumble recovery. Tyrone Archie had two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. ROCK MISSING SHAMAR GREENE All-American Running back Shamar Greene was on his way to another stellar season when he was injured in week five at California in the first half. He has yet to return to action and is expected to be out this week as well. Before the injury, Greene broke the all-time career rushing record at SRU and has rushed for 4,275 yards in his career. At the time of the injury, he was top five in all of the NCAA in active rushing yardage and was top five in Division II in career all-purpose yards. Greene is still hopeful of a potential return to the lineup. SLOT RECEIVERS MOVING UP CAREER LISTS Slot receivers Drew Scales and Milly Raye both pulled in their 100th career catches in the last two weeks. Scales is now up to 10th alltime at SRU with 107 career catches, while Raye is 11th with 103 career grabs. Raye also moved up to 10th on the career list at SRU in touchdown catches with his 14th last week. With another year to play, Raye has a chance to climb into the top five in nearly every receiving category. Scales is also just 28 yards away from the SRU career record for total kick return yards. SCALES AMONG NATIONAL RETURN LEADERS Drew Scales ranks seventh among all active players in Division II in career kick return yards with 1,626 total yards. That figure has him sitting second in the SRU record book, needing just 28 yards to tie Paul Favers record of 1,654. Scales has averaged 27.6 yards per return over his career, which ranks eighth among all active players in Division II and currently ranks sixth in Rock history. The top active players in Division II, sorted by total career kick return yards, can be found below. 1. Anthony Mullins... William Jewell...2,411 (99 returns) 2. Jesse Zalk... Adams State... 1,836 (75) 7. Drew Scales...Slippery Rock...1,626 (59) 8. Jhalen Bien-Aime... Pace... 1,608 (63) DK3 MOVES INTO RECORD BOOKS Quarterback Don King III has completed 166 passes in eight games this year, moving him up to fifth in single-season history at SRU. He is just one completion away from moving up to fourth. King III also ranks sixth in single-season pass attempts with 280 and ranks 10th currently in single-season passing TDs with 15. His yards per game average is the fourth best single-season mark in school history and his 1,819 passing yards are closing in on the top 10 as well (10th is 1,895). TURNOVER TROUBLE One of the themes of the three Slippery Rock losses on the year is turnovers. In each of The Rock s three losses the team turned the ball over at least three times. In each of the other five games this year the team has turned the ball over less than three times and come away with a win. STRONG 1ST, 4TH - WEAK MIDDLE Slippery Rock has scored more points in the first quarter this season than any other quarter. The Rock are outscoring opponents in the first quarter and in the fourth quarter, but are being outscored in both the middle quarters. SRU is being outscored in the second quarter and has managed just 38 total points in the third quarter this year to be outscored coming out of halftime. TOUGH TO RUN ON Slippery Rock had the second best run defense in the country last year among Division II programs and The Rock are right back up there again, currently sitting at No. 7 in the nation and allowing just 81.9 rushing yards per game. That equals out to just 2.5 yards per carry through eight games. ROCK BITTEN BY INJURY BUG Slippery Rock has been hit hard by injuries on both sides of the ball the last four weeks with as many as 12 starters missing time with significant injuries. The offense has played without both of its All-Americans the last three weeks in running back Shamar Greene and center Joe LoSchiavo. Last week both the first string and second string QBs were added to that list with Don King III and Nathaniel Musselman suffering injuries. On the defensive side of the ball, John Conglose missed three games, Cody Allen missed four games, Bob Vernick missed two games, Joe Phillips missed more than one game, Cody Conway missed more than one game, Kevin Green is set to miss his second straight game and Anthony Zappone and Titus Howard have both missed time, giving The Rock defense a total of eight starters that are either out or dealing with injuries. FRESHMEN HAVE TO PLAY The Rock traditionally sits most of their true freshmen for a redshirt year while the players adapt to the program, academic life and the college game. That is the case again this year, but many true freshmen have had to burn that redshirt and contribute. The most notable of these are both freshman QBs Nathaniel Musselman and Augustus Necastro. Running back Dontez Rash has seen significant carries with Shamar Greene sidelined, and linebacker Patrick Minenok started two games. Tight end Dylan Stapleton and defensive lineman Levar Ware have also seen time. The Rock are also using a pair of true freshmen specialists in kicker Jake Chapla and punter Josiah Davis for a total of nine true freshmen seeing the field. Rock Football Game Notes - 3

4 MARTIN SHATTERS SRU/PSAC SACK RECORD Eight games into his junior season, Marcus Martin has recorded more career sacks than any player in PSAC football history. His 39.0 career sacks shattered the former SRU record of 32.0 and the former PSAC record of In eight games this year, despite seeing double teams and facing three All-American offensive tackles so far, he has recorded 47 total tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. MARTIN AMONG BEST IN ALL OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL Marcus Martin s 39.0 career sacks are the third most of all active football players in the country at any level and are 10.5 better than any other junior at any level. His 1.15 sack per game average is the second highest average of all players currently playing at any level. 1. He has his sights set on becoming the all-time Division II record holder (46.0) and has a realistic chance with another year to play of becoming the all-time sack leader in NCAA history (53.5), regardless of division. The career record holder for each NCAA Division can be found below. This season in Division II football brings an interesting race as both Lucky Baar from McKendree and Marcus Martin are rapidly moving up the all-time career sack list in Division II. They are the only two active players with more than 30 career sacks. Martin has the edge in the race for the top spot, however, as Baar is a senior this season and Martin has another year of eligibility. ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN TOO As if his excellence on the football field isn t enough, Marcus Martin also excels in the classroom. He was named to CoSIDA Academic All- America honors last season in his first year of eligibility for the award. Martin carries a 3.6 GPA in the safety management program with a minor in business administration. He is a three-time PSAC Scholar- Athlete. CAREER TACKLES FOR LOSS RECORD Marcus Martin is also on pace to become the all-time leader in NCAA history in career tackles for loss. He has 61.5 through two years and eight games (on pace for at least 80) and the Division II record is 77.0, set by Andre Bernardi from North Greenville. 6 BIG LEG FROM CHAPLA True freshman kicker Jake Chapla connected from 51 yards against Mercyhurst, which was the first 50+ yard field goal for an SRU kicker since 2003 and is the second longest field goal in school history. It was also the first kick of more than 50 yards by any kicker in the PSAC since the 2012 season. Chapla has made 9-of-12 FG attempts this year to rank 10th in SRU single-season history. He has made five kicks of 40+ yards. ZAPPONE LEADING THE DEFENSE Linebacker Anthony Zappone transferred to SRU for his senior year from Eastern Michigan and like Teven Williams last year, has made an immediate impact and looked like he s been here all along. Last season, Williams came in from Youngstown State and ended up leading SRU in tackles and earning All-America honors. This fall, Zappone is the leading tackler for SRU through eight weeks with 67 total tackles, including 8.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He also has two interceptions, five QB hurries and a team-high 31 solo tackles on the year. CONWAY NEARING TOP 10 Defensive end Cody Conway is closing in on cracking the all-time top 10 list at SRU in career sacks. He currently has 17.0 career sacks, needing just 0.5 to move into a tie for 10th on the all-time ledger with Mike Welhorsky ( ). He is also closing in on the top 10 list for career tackles for loss. Conway has 34.0 career stops behind the line of scrimmage, 3.0 away from joining John Sikora in 10th all-time. SECONDARY CLOSING IN ON CAREER LISTS Safety Derrick Fulmore currently ranks sixth in SRU history with 13 career interceptions, four off the career record of 17. He has 25 career passes defended, six off the 10th spot on the SRU career list. Titus Howard has 28 passes defended and needs just three more to move into 10th in SRU history. Alfon Cook has 25 and is six off the 10th spot. WINNING SEASON STREAK With a 12-2 record last fall, Slippery Rock has now put together seven straight winning seasons, has been above.500 in nine of the last 10 years and has finished in winning fashion in 23 of the last 28 seasons. Only three teams in the PSAC have at least seven winning seasons in a row entering the 2016 season. With a win over Clarion, The Rock would guarantee themselves of an eighth straight winning season. Greene and Martin have been teammates for most of their football playing careers and are rewriting record books together each week on opposite sides of the ball. NEW COORDINATORS In addition to a new head coach, Slippery Rock opened 2016 with a pair of new coordinators. Domenick Razzano was promoted from codefensive coordinator and secondary coach in 2015 and will serve as the defensive coordinator in The Rock also hired a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Justin Roper, a former Division I quarterback that played at Oregon and Montana. Roper comes to SRU after spending two years as the QB coach at Valdosta State. 16 16 -Rock Football Game Notes HEAD COACH SHAWN LUTZ Shawn Lutz was named the 16th head coach in Slippery Rock football history on Dec. 18, 2015 after finishing his fourth season as The Rock s associate head coach, eighth season as defensive coordinator and his 20th overall season as a member of The Rock s staff in Lutz has been an integral part of Slippery Rock climbing to the top of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in recent years, as he has guided the defense of the three-time defending PSAC Western Division champions. The Rock have won four of the last five PSAC West titles, have claimed back-to-back overall PSAC titles and have made three straight trips to the NCAA Division II playoffs, including a trip to the quarterfinals last fall. Slippery Rock is one of only six programs in Division II to appear in the last three playoff tournaments. Slippery Rock s defense has annually ranked among the best in the PSAC under Lutz, and that was true again in The Rock defense shattered multiple school records on the way to the NCAA quarterfinals, including putting up the best rushing numbers in program history. The Rock defense, led by the defensive line (also coached by Lutz), allowed just 2.2 rushing yards per carry and 71.7 rushing yards per game on the season. Those numbers gave Slippery Rock the second best rushing defense in the country. The Rock also led the nation in takeaways with 47, finished first in the nation in fumble recoveries with 23 and finished third in the country in interceptions with 24. In addition to those numbers, The Rock defense led the country in scoring with eight touchdowns of their own, ranked sixth in tackles for loss with an average of 9.4 per game and ranked seventh in sacks with an average of 3.43 sacks per game. Slippery Rock also shattered program records for most passes defended (112), fumbles recovered (23), fumbles forced (19), tackles for loss (132.0) and interceptions returned for touchdowns (4). Lutz has coached one of the best starts to any individual career in NCAA history in redshirt junior defensive end Marcus Martin, who recorded 31.5 sacks in just two years and entered this season as the only active player at any level of NCAA football to average more than 1.00 sack per game. Martin, who averaged an incredible 1.21 sacks per game through the 2015 season, was named the PSAC West and Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year in He is on a pace that could see him shatter the all-time NCAA sack record. The success of the defense in 2015 was no surprise after what the 2014 unit was able to accomplish. Despite losing eight starters after the 2013 season, including all the linemen and linebackers, The Rock s defense helped lead the way to a PSAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in SRU s defense ranked eighth in the nation in rushing yards per game allowed (92.3), 20th in passes intercepted (16) and 22nd in third down conversion defense (31.8 percent). The 2013 Rock defense ranked fourth nationally among NCAA Division II teams in pass defense efficiency (97.46), fifth in third-down conversion (.265) and 25th in rushing defense (121.8 yards per game). SRU ranked second among the PSAC teams in rushing defense. Lutz served 10 seasons as defensive line coach and seven seasons as recruiting coordinator before assuming the reigns of the defense in He added the title of associate head coach in 2012 as Slippery Rock began a long-term plan to transition him into the head coaching role. He wasn t always a defensive guy, as he also tutored the tight ends and tackles in 1998 and served as graduate assistant in 1996 and 1997, working with the offensive linemen. Under Lutz s leadership, The Rock defensive line has carved out an impressive niche. He has coached nine linemen that earned All-America citations and 24 All-PSAC honorees. Lutz-coached defensive linemen have led the PSAC in quarterback sacks five of the last eight seasons and currently hold or share eight school records. As a player, Lutz was a three-year letterman as a tight end at West Virginia University. He was a member of two bowl teams. One of those teams finished the regular season unbeaten, won the Big East Conference championship, played in the Sugar Bowl and had a No. 6 final national ranking. Lutz received his bachelor s degree in secondary education/social studies from WVU in 1996 and received his master s degree in sport management from SRU in A native of Massillon, Ohio, Lutz and his wife, Julie, are the parents of three sons, Logan, Gavin and Easton, who was just born in August of The Lutz s reside in Grove City.
