Lutz has been a member of the coaching staff for eight of SRU s PSAC West titles. Marty Schaetzle is in his 15th season as the head coach at Mercyhurst, where he has posted a overall record. He has led the program to winning seasons in five of the eight years since the Lakers joined the PSAC, including a 10-3 mark in 2010 when the program won its only PSAC title. A 1983 graduate of Bucknell University, Schaetzle s 76 wins are the third most among all active PSAC head coaches. LONGEST HOME WINNING STREAK Slippery Rock enters tonight s game with the longest active home winning streak in Division II at 19 straight games. The Rock were flawless at home in each of the last three seasons, including a 7-0 record last fall with a pair of NCAA playoff victories. SRU s last home loss came in the final game of the 2012 season. NATIONALLY RANKED Slippery Rock has been ranked in the AFCA Division II poll for 13 straight weeks dating back to midway through last season. The Rock have been ranked or listed as receiving votes in 21 straight polls dating back to week 10 of the 2014 season. This week, SRU slipped 10 spots to No. 19 in the poll after falling on the road at California. Complete Division II polls are on page 10 of these notes. Rock Football Game Notes - 1

Kerr Thompson Stadium). The Rock own a (.740) home record since artificial turf was installed in the summer of 2003 and are (.806) in home games since The numbers get even better in recent years, as The Rock are 19-0 since the beginning of 2013 and have not lost at home since Nov. 10, SRU is 32-4 (.889) at home since the beginning of 2010 and has gone undefeated at home in four separate seasons during that stretch. The Rock have won 16 of their last 17 home night games and are 27-9 (.750) under the lights all-time at home. LAST MEETING WITH MERCYHURST - 10/17/15 No. 20 Slippery Rock ran for 252 yards and held Mercyhurst to -11 yards on the ground in a win last year in Erie. The Lakers threw the ball an incredible 65 times in the game when they couldn t get anything going on the ground with standout back Brandon Brown-Dukes, who is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad. Brown-Dukes finished with game with nine carries for -16 yards. Shamar Greene had no issues running the ball for The Rock, racking up 167 yards and one touchdown in the game. Julian Durden added 65 yards and two scores on the ground. Dante Nania completed 16-of-26 passes for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a game that featured spurts of rain, snow and hail. Leroy McClain caught a highlight reel 38-yard TD to lead the receivers. Zach Emerick completed 39-of-65 passes for 412 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions for the Lakers. Jaquan Williams caught eight balls for 137 yards and one score and FJ Williams added 10 catches for 97 yards and one TD. The Rock defense was led by Marcus Martin with 10 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks for a loss of 15 yards and five additional QB hurries. Teven Williams added 11 tackles, one sack and one interception and Alfon Cook and Derrick Fulmore each recorded one interception as well. LAST WEEK FOR SLIPPERY ROCK Slippery Rock turned the ball over on three straight series in the second quarter, including two interceptions that went for 14 points the other way, in suffering its first loss of the year, at No. 24 California. In addition to the turnover issues, The Rock also struggled with injuries, losing four starters either before or during the game, including All- American running back Shamar Greene. Marcus Martin was one of the lone bright spots for SRU and was the most dominant defensive player on the field all day. He finished with a career-high 13 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. The 52 points allowed was the first time a Rock team allowed 50 or more points to an opponent since September of LAST WEEK FOR MERCYHURST Mercyhurst used a trick play with running back Richie Sanders going out wide and throwing a 69-yard TD pass to Brad Novak to take a lead at Gannon with 2:37 to play last week, but the Golden Knights answered back just over two minutes later to force overtime. Neither team would find the end zone in the extra session. Dylan Kondis kicked a 39-yard field goal for Mercyhurst and Gannon missed its attempt to end the game with the Lakers coming out on top 38-35, despite being outgained in total offense.

3 MARTIN INCREASES SRU/PSAC SACK RECORD Just five games into his junior season, Marcus Martin has recorded more career sacks than any player in PSAC football history. His 2.0 sacks last week at California bring his career total to 37.5, the eighth most in Division II history. In five games this year, despite seeing double teams and facing two All-American offensive tackles so far, he has recorded 39 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks. MARTIN AMONG NATION S BEST Marcus Martin s 37.5 career sacks are the third most of all active football players in the country and are 10.5 better than any other junior at any level of college football. His 1.21 sack per game average ranks second among all players in the nation and first among players that have appeared in at least 20 games. 1. He has his sights set on becoming the all-time Division II record holder (46.0). He has averaged nearly 16.0 sacks per season over his first two years, a number that could make him the record holder this year if he is able to repeat. He has a realistic chance with two years left to play of becoming the all-time sack leader in NCAA history, regardless of division. The career record holder for each NCAA Division can be found below. This season in Division II football brings an interesting race as both Lucky Baar from McKendree and Marcus Martin are rapidly moving up the all-time career sack list in Division II. They are the only two active players with more than 30 career sacks. Martin has the edge in the race for the top spot, however, as Baar is a senior this season and Martin has another year of eligibility. CAREER TACKLES FOR LOSS Marcus Martin is also on pace to become the all-time leader in NCAA history in career tackles for loss. He has 59.0 through two years and five games (on pace for at least 88.5) and the Division II record is 77.0, set by Andre Bernardi from North Greenville. With one more TFL Martin will tie the all-time SRU program record of 60.0 set by Hall of Famer Matt Kinsinger. ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN TOO As if his excellence on the football field isn t enough, Marcus Martin also excels in the classroom. He was named to CoSIDA Academic All- America honors last season in his first year of eligibility for the award. Martin carries above a 3.6 GPA in the safety management program at Slippery Rock. He is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete. Oklahoma Panhandle DREW SCALES...SLIPPERY ROCK OFFENSE GETTING BACK UP TO SPEED Slippery Rock led the nation by a wide margin in total offensive plays in 2015 and averaged 86.8 plays per game. With a new offensive coordinator, new starting QB and four new offensive linemen, the offense averaged just 72.5 plays per game and failed to reach 400 yards of total offense in each of the first two games of this season. Those numbers have improved since, with the team averaging 97.7 plays per game and yards per game over the last three weeks. On the season, The Rock now average 84.0 plays and yards of offense per game through five weeks. TOUGH TO RUN ON Slippery Rock had the second best run defense in the country last year and The Rock are right back up there again, currently sitting at No. 5 in the nation and allowing just 71.4 rushing yards per game. That equals out to just 2.1 yards per carry through five games. YOUTH MOVEMENT Slippery Rock has a balanced roster with many upperclassmen starting on both sides of the ball, but this year is also notable for how young The Rock are on the field. This week s depth chart features 23 players (including special teams) listed as projected starters or backups that are sophomores or freshmen in eligibility. ZAPPONE LEADING THE DEFENSE Linebacker Anthony Zappone transferred to SRU for his senior year from Eastern Michigan and like Teven Williams last year, has made an immediate impact and looked like he s been here all along. Last season, Williams came in from Youngstown State and ended up leading SRU in tackles and earning All-America honors. This fall, Zappone is the leading tackler for SRU through five weeks with 46 total tackles, including 6.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He also has two interceptions and a team-high 20 solo tackles on the year. EARLY SEASON STUMBLES HAVEN T BEEN ALL BAD The loss last week at California marked the third straight year in which Slippery Rock has dropped its first game of the season in either week four or week five. In each of the last two years, the team has rebounded and gone on to win the PSAC West title and the overall PSAC Championship. Last week, it was a week four upset loss to Seton Hill that sparked a run of nine straight wins and an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals. ROCK TO HONOR GOLD STAR FAMILIES AT HALFTIME During halftime of tonight s game, Slippery Rock University will honor the memory of two former SRU ROTC graduates that lost their lives in Iraq by welcoming their Gold Star Families. SRU President Cheryl Norton will present SRU pins and flowers to the families of the late Army Capt. Jason West and Army 2nd Lt. Christopher Loudon during the ceremony. The tribute marks the 10th anniversary of the soldiers combat deaths in West, formerly of Crafton, enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school, serving as an attack helicopter repairman. He later enrolled at SRU and served in the ROTC program. He graduated from SRU in 2002 with a degree in human resource management. A tank commander of the 1st Brigade, 1st Armor Division based in Friedberg, Germany, West took part in Operation Iraqi Freedom in He died July 24, 2006, in Ramadi, Iraq, during a firefight with enemy combatants. Medals and commendations posthumously awarded to West include: Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Combat Action Badge, Aviation Badge and the Parachutist Badge. Members of West s family that will participate in the ceremony include: his mother, Dee West; widow, Juli West; and brother, Doug West. Loudon, formerly of Brockport, graduated from SRU in 2005 with a degree in environmental health. He served as captain of the Ranger Challenge Team. The Army assigned Loudon to the 2nd Platoon, C Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. After deployment to Iraq, Loudon died Oct. 17, 2006, in Baghdad of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Medals and commendations posthumously awarded to Loudon include: Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge and Parachutist Badge. Member s of Loudon s family that will participate in the ceremony include: his widow, Jacey Kennedy; parents, Randy and Susan Loudon; and brothers, retired Army Maj. Nicholas Loudon and Jonathan Loudon. It is important to remember and honor their sacrifice, said Army Capt. Joseph Barrow, SRU assistant professor of military science. Their lives were cut short for what our country asked them to do. Our country asked them to go and fight. In doing so, they made the ultimate sacrifice. SRU s embrace of former soldiers has been noted by several veterans groups. Victory Media, a veteran-owned company that helps veterans transition back into civilian life, named the University a 2016 Military Friendly School. The halftime ceremony will be just one part of a day filled with events to celebrate veterans and military personnel as part of SRU s annual Salute to Military game. Rock Football Game Notes - 5

The Rock led the nation in total takeaways in 2015 with 47 turnovers gained, but are off to a slower pace than that this year with nine takeaways through five games. Seven of those were interceptions and two were fumble recoveries, both of which came last week at California. The Rock are currently ranked eighth in the PSAC and 81st in the country in total takeaways. The fewest points scored by any team in the series was the 10 scored by SRU in the first game of the series back in 2008, while the most points scored were the 58 scored by The Rock in CAPTAINS NAMED The team votes each year to select the annual captains. This year s captains are Shamar Greene, Joe LoSchiavo, Bob Vernick, Derrick Fulmore and Joe Phillips. BROTHERS ON THE ROSTER Slippery Rock has a pair of full-blood brothers on the roster this year. All-Region senior linebacker Bob Vernick is joined by freshman brother Tim Vernick and freshman defensive lineman Josh Bader is joined by his brother Zach Bader, who transferred in from Youngstown State. STARTERS AND STARS FROM WEST MIFFLIN Slippery Rock starts four players that all graduated from West Mifflin High School, three of which have earned at least All-Region honors during their careers at SRU in Shamar Greene, Marcus Martin and Derrick Fulmore. Jim Popa also moved into a starting role on the offensive line to begin the 2016 season. Greene and Martin have been teammates for most of their football playing careers and are rewriting record books together each week on opposite sides of the ball. NEW COORDINATORS In addition to a new head coach, Slippery Rock opened 2016 with a pair of new coordinators. Domenick Razzano was promoted from codefensive coordinator and secondary coach in 2015 and will serve as the defensive coordinator in The Rock also hired a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Justin Roper, a former Division I quarterback that played at Oregon and Montana. Roper comes to SRU after spending two years as the QB coach at Valdosta State. TUCKER GETS NFL SHOT Former Slippery Rock offensive lineman Cory Tucker, who finished his Rock career in 2015 by earning All-America honors and being a finalist for the Upshaw Lineman of the Year Award, earned an NFL shot and spent the 2016 NFL preseason in camp with the Cleveland Browns, appearing in three preseason games. He was the second SRU alum to be on an NFL roster this year, joining Minnesota Vikings starting guard Brandon Fusco, who had his SRU number (74) retired last year. 16 HEAD COACH SHAWN LUTZ Shawn Lutz was named the 16th head coach in Slippery Rock football history on Dec. 18, 2015 after finishing his fourth season as The Rock s associate head coach, eighth season as defensive coordinator and his 20th overall season as a member of The Rock s staff in Lutz has been an integral part of Slippery Rock climbing to the top of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in recent years, as he has guided the defense of the three-time defending PSAC Western Division champions. The Rock have won four of the last five PSAC West titles, have claimed back-to-back overall PSAC titles and have made three straight trips to the NCAA Division II playoffs, including a trip to the quarterfinals last fall. Slippery Rock is one of only six programs in Division II to appear in the last three playoff tournaments. Slippery Rock s defense has annually ranked among the best in the PSAC under Lutz, and that was true again in The Rock defense shattered multiple school records on the way to the NCAA quarterfinals, including putting up the best rushing numbers in program history. The Rock defense, led by the defensive line (also coached by Lutz), allowed just 2.2 rushing yards per carry and 71.7 rushing yards per game on the season. Those numbers gave Slippery Rock the second best rushing defense in the country. The Rock also led the nation in takeaways with 47, finished first in the nation in fumble recoveries with 23 and finished third in the country in interceptions with 24. In addition to those numbers, The Rock defense led the country in scoring with eight touchdowns of their own, ranked sixth in tackles for loss with an average of 9.4 per game and ranked seventh in sacks with an average of 3.43 sacks per game. Slippery Rock also shattered program records for most passes defended (112), fumbles recovered (23), fumbles forced (19), tackles for loss (132.0) and interceptions returned for touchdowns (4). Lutz has coached one of the best starts to any individual career in NCAA history in redshirt junior defensive end Marcus Martin, who has recorded 31.5 sacks in just two years and is the only active player at any level of NCAA football to average more than 1.00 sack per game. Martin, who averaged an incredible 1.21 sacks per game through the 2015 season, was named the PSAC West and Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year in He is on a pace that could see him shatter the all-time NCAA sack record. The success of the defense in 2015 was no surprise after what the 2014 unit was able to accomplish. Despite losing eight starters after the 2013 season, including all the linemen and linebackers, The Rock s defense helped lead the way to a PSAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in SRU s defense ranked eighth in the nation in rushing yards per game allowed (92.3), 20th in passes intercepted (16) and 22nd in third down conversion defense (31.8 percent). The 2013 Rock defense ranked fourth nationally among NCAA Division II teams in pass defense efficiency (97.46), fifth in third-down conversion (.265) and 25th in rushing defense (121.8 yards per game). SRU ranked second among the PSAC teams in rushing defense. 17 HEAD COACH SHAWN LUTZ Those efforts resulted in seven Rock defenders earning All-PSAC Western Division honors, five garnering All-Region honors and senior linebacker Quindell Dean, now an assistant coach on Lutz s staff, being named to All-America honors. In 2012, The Rock ranked 10th nationally in third-down conversion and 25th in pass defense efficiency. SRU was third in the PSAC in interceptions (16) and fifth in rushing defense (138.7 yards per game). The 2011 Rock defense led the PSAC in both total defense (261.2 yards per game) and rush defense (80.0 yards per game), tied for second in interceptions with 20 and ranked third in scoring defense (16.5 points per game). Behind the efforts of all-star performers Brandon Watters, Jake Wickline and Zach Sheridan, The Rock defense ranked third nationally in rushing defense, fourth in total defense, sixth in scoring defense and ninth in pass efficiency defense ( In 2010, The Rock s defense ranked second in the PSAC and 17th nationally in pass defense. Lutz s defense also produced two All- Region selections, (Sheridan and Robert Doiley) and two All-PSAC choices (Doiley and Andre Freeman). Lutz served 10 seasons as defensive line coach and seven seasons as recruiting coordinator before assuming the reigns of the defense in He added the title of associate head coach in 2012 as Slippery Rock began a long-term plan to transition him into the head coaching role. He wasn t always a defensive guy, as he also tutored the tight ends and tackles in 1998 and served as graduate assistant in 1996 and 1997, working with the offensive linemen. Under Lutz s leadership, The Rock defensive line has carved out an impressive niche. He has coached nine linemen that earned All-America citations and 24 All-PSAC honorees. Lutz-coached defensive linemen have led the PSAC in quarterback sacks five of the last eight seasons and currently hold or share eight school records. As a player, Lutz was a three-year letterman as a tight end at West Virginia University. He was a member of two bowl teams. One of those teams finished the regular season unbeaten, won the Big East Conference championship, played in the Sugar Bowl and had a No. 6 final national ranking. Lutz received his bachelor s degree in secondary education/social studies from WVU in 1996 and received his master s degree in sport management from SRU in A native of Massillon, Ohio, Lutz and his wife, Julie, are the parents of three sons, Logan, Gavin and Easton, who was just born in August of The Lutz s reside in Grove City.
