3 LAST MEETING WITH NEW HAVEN - 9/5/15 Slippery Rock defeated New Haven on the road to open the 2015 season thanks to a dominant second half in which the offense put up 25 points and the defense allowed just three. SRU finished the game with a advantage in total offense and most of New Haven s yardage came on three big plays in the first half, including a 78-yard TD pass. Shamar Greene ran for 116 yards and one touchdown, Dante Nania completed 32 passes for 269 yards and three TD and seven different receivers caught at least three passes. Taishan Tucker pulled down two TD catches and Milly Raye added one. Teven Williams led the defensive effort with 12 total tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Derrick Fulmore picked off one pass and Kris Williams recovered a fumble. New Haven was paced by Andre Anderson, who rushed for 80 yards on just nine carries and caught one pass for a 78-yard touchdown. Ajee Patterson was 6-of-16 passing for 83 yards in relief of Shazzon Mumphrey, who started the game and went 6-of-14 for 136 yards and one TD. The win marked the seventh straight season opening victory for the program, which has not lost the first game of the year since SEASON-OPENER STREAK Slippery Rock has won its last seven consecutive season-openers, including last year s victory on the road at New Haven. The last time The Rock failed to open their season with a victory was the 2008 season. POTENT OFFENSE Slippery Rock had the nation s most potent offense last year, averaging 45.2 points per game and putting up the most first downs of any team in the country. Those numbers helped SRU to lead all PSAC Western Division schools in scoring over the last five years. The Rock led all PSAC teams with a school record 633 points in 2015 and have averaged 38.2 points per game over the last five years. A look at the total scoring for SRU over the last five seasons can be found below 2011: : : : : 520 Totals: 2,294 points 38.2 points per game. FAST-PACED OFFENSE No offense in the nation ran more plays than Slippery Rock last season. The Rock were the only team in the country to top 1,200 plays on the year, running 1,215 plays for an average of 86.8 plays per game. Only Northwest Missouri State (1,142) and Emporia State (1,131) came close as just three programs ran more than 1,000 plays last year. SRU ran 100 or more plays in a game two times last season. TAKEAWAYS Slippery Rock led the nation in takeaways last year with 47 turnovers gained by the defense. The Rock were first in the nation in fumble recoveries with 23 and third in the nation in interceptions with 24. SRU also finished first in the nation in touchdowns scored by the defense with eight. The program broke single-season records for passes defended (112 with 88 breakups, 24 interceptions), fumbles forced (19) and fumbles recovered (23). RUN DEFENSE Slippery Rock had the second best rush defense in the country last year, allowing opponents just 71.7 yards per game on the ground. That number established a new program record for lowest yards per game allowed and a new school record for lowest average yards per rush at just The 1,004 opponent rushing yards allowed are the third lowest in school history, despite the team playing 14 games. SACKS Slippery Rock has led the PSAC in total sacks over the last five seasons with 158 total sacks. That number is helped by a league-high 48 sacks in 2015, which was eight higher than the next best program in the league. The Rock have recorded at least 24 sacks in each of the last five years and finished the 2015 season ranked seventh in the country in sacks per game at STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE The Rock face a balanced schedule this season on paper, as their opponents went a combined (.500) in However, seven of the 11 opponents posted winning records last year, headlined by California (Pa.) (8-3), Indiana (Pa.) (9-3), West Chester (7-4), New Haven (7-4), Clarion (7-4) and Kutztown (7-4). The overall strength of schedule is weighed down by Edinboro (0-11), Lock Haven (2-9) and Seton Hill (3-8), with those three programs combining to post a 5-28 record. Slippery Rock s six home opponents this season compiled an overall record of (.424) in The team should face a much tougher challenge on the road, as its away opponents compiled an overall record of (.589) last fall. SRU will have road trips to four teams that posted at least seven wins last year (California, Indiana, West Chester, Clarion). TOUGH STRETCH TO OPEN YEAR Slippery Rock has one of the toughest opening pair of games among all schools in the Atlantic Region. The Rock will open the year with back-toback games against teams that went 7-4 and played in their conference title games last year with New Haven and West Chester, the latter of which will be a rematch of the PSAC Championship from last fall. MIHALIK STEPS DOWN George Mihalik retired from Slippery Rock both as head coach and as a professor following the 2015 season after leading SRU to 197 wins in 28 years. In total, Mihalik spent 44 years of his life at SRU as a player, assistant coach and head coach. The Rock won eight PSAC West titles and made six NCAA playoff appearances under Mihalik, who owns the fourth most wins in PSAC history. YOUTH MOVEMENT Slippery Rock has a balanced roster with many upperclassmen penciled to start on both sides of the ball, but this year will also be notable for how young The Rock are on the field. The opening week depth chart features 18 players listed as projected starters or backups that are sophomores or freshmen in eligibility. CAPTAINS NAMED The team votes each year to select the annual captains. This year s captains are Shamar Greene, Joe LoSchiavo, Bob Vernick, Derrick Fulmore and Joe Phillips. 7 SHAMAR GREENE MOVING UP RECORD BOOKS After recording the second highest single-season rushing yards (1,482) in program history in 2014, Shamar Greene managed to surpass that mark with 1,545 yards in just 11.5 games last season. Now entering his senior season, Greene currently ranks second in SRU history in career rushing yards (3,754), third in all-purpose yards (4,215), sixth in rushing attempts (645), and seventh in rushing touchdowns (28). He needs just 974 all-purpose yards, 179 rushing yards and 112 rushing attempts to become the program leader in those categories. GREENE WINS PSAC RUSHING TITLE Shamar Greene s 1,545 rushing yards last season were the most in the league, despite him missing 2.5 games with an injury. The yardage ranked fourth among all backs in Division II last season. He had his best career year to date, averaging yards per game and 5.7 yards per carry. 8 RUNNING BACK DEPTH Shamar Greene, Isiah Neely and Dominic Dingle all return to The Rock this season after helping to lead the program to multiple singleseason rushing records last fall. The Rock rushed for 3,608 yards as a team, scored 46 rushing touchdowns and averaged rushing yards per game. In addition to Green s 1,545 yards and 14 touchdowns, Neely added 119 carries for 630 yards (5.3 yards per carry) and five touchdowns and Dingle chipped in 42 carries for 295 yards (7.0 yards per carry) and three touchdowns. Dingle also had the longest rush of the year at 67 yards. The Rock also added All-Ohio running back Dontez Rash as a freshman this fall. Rash has impressed in preseason camp and will be played as a true freshman this fall. QB BATTLE DECIDED IN CAMP Slippery Rock entered preseason camp with two senior quarterbacks battling for the starting role. The team has named transfer Don King III from Sam Houston State as its starter for week one against New Haven. King edged out returner Zack Newsock, who will begin week one as the backup. The number three QB on the depth chart is true freshmen Nathaniel Musselman. King played sparingly at Sam Houston and graduated early with one year of eligibility remaining. Newsock is a redshirt senior that has appeared in games in each of the last three years. He s made eight career starts and has completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,357 yards with 20 TDs and 13 INTs. PASS CATCHERS GALORE Slippery Rock will likely play at least eight receivers on a rotating basis throughout the season and could play as many as wide receivers each game, not counting the three rotating tight ends expected to see time. Slot receivers Milly Raye and Drew Scales, along with outside targets Marcus Johnson and Carnel Harley will get the starts in week one. SLOT RECEIVERS Milly Raye had a breakout year last fall, leading the team in catches with 57 for 770 yards and eight touchdowns. Drew Scales suffered an injury that forced him to miss much of the season, but before the injury he caught 17 passes for 182 yards. Behind the starters, Leroy McClain and Dakota Clanagan are expected to be the next two slot receivers to see the field. McClain caught 28 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns last year and Clanagan will be looking for his first career catch. WIDE OUTS Marcus Johnson and Carnel Harley both learned the system in their first year with SRU last season but emerged from camp as the starters for week one. Johnson caught seven passes for 126 yards and one TD in 2015 and Harley caught three passes for 37 yards as a true freshman. Behind them, Taishan Tucker, Darren Massey and Tavarus Sample are expected to be the next three receivers to see the field. Tucker was fourth on the team in receptions last year with 35 catches for 440 yards and four touchdowns. Massey was an All-PSAC selection at Edinboro before transferring to SRU for his senior season. INTERCEPTIONS Slippery Rock picked off a total of 24 passes last season and returns most of the primary threats to keep that trend going in Titus Howard and Derrick Fulmore both picked off four passes last year and Alfon Cook snagged three interceptions. Fulmore ranks eighth all-time at SRU with 11 career interceptions. The career record belongs to Brian Polk ( ) at 17 picks. RETURN GAME THREAT With Drew Scales back in the lineup this season, The Rock gains an explosive playmaker in the return game. Scales was ranked in the top 10 players in the country before his injury last year in active career kick return average. He has returned 42 total kickoffs for 1,214 yards with two touchdowns and has an average career return number of 28.9 yards per kick. He s also got one punt return TD for a total of three return TDs in his career. Newcomers Dontez Rash and Landon Yeartie will also add explosiveness to the return game. NEW SPECIAL TEAMS FACES One of the biggest questions marks entering the season will be the special teams units after the graduation of All-Conference kickers Andrew Huska and Mike Wainauskis. The Rock will look to a pair of true freshmen to fill those roles this year, with Jake Chapla handling the placekicking and Josiah Davis set to be the punter. DEFENSIVE LINE One of the most formidable units for The Rock on paper entering the season is the defensive line, anchored by All-American and Regional Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Martin. Joining Martin are All- Region tackle Joe Phillips, end Cody Conway and nose guard Mike Kope as the starters. Phillips finished the 2015 season with 12.0 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Conway added 12.5 tackles for loss and 8.0 sacks and Kope chipped in 3.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. Those numbers combined with Martin s 25.0 tackles for loss and 15.5 sacks give SRU one of the top returning front fours in the PSAC. CONWAY NEARING TOP 10 Defensive end Cody Conway is closing in on cracking the all-time top 10 list at SRU in career sacks. He enters his senior season with 15.0 career sacks, needing just 2.5 to move into a tie for 10th on the all-time ledger with Mike Welhorsky ( ). BROTHERS ON THE ROSTER Slippery Rock has a pair of full-blood brothers on the roster this year. All-Region senior linebacker Bob Vernick is joined by freshman brother Tim Vernick and freshman defensive lineman Josh Bader is joined by his brother Zach Bader, who transferred in from Youngstown State. STARTERS FROM WEST MIFFLIN Slippery Rock is projected to start four players that all graduated from West Mifflin high school in week one, three of which have earned at least All-Region honors during their careers at SRU in Shamar Greene, Marcus Martin and Derrick Fulmore. Jim Popa will also move into a starting role on the offensive line. NEW COORDINATORS In addition to a new head coach, Slippery Rock will open 2016 with a pair of new coordinators. Domenick Razzano was promoted from codefensive coordinator and secondary coach in 2015 and will serve as the defensive coordinator in The Rock also hired a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Justin Roper, a former Division I quarterback that played at Oregon and Montana. Roper comes to SRU after spending two years as the QB coach at Valdosta State. TUCKER GETS NFL SHOT Slippery Rock offensive lineman Cory Tucker, who finished his Rock career in 2015 by earning All-America honors and being a finalist for the Upshaw Lineman of the Year Award, earned an NFL shot and spent the 2016 NFL preseason in camp with the Cleveland Browns, appearing in three preseason games. 8 -Rock Football Game Notes

RB Andre Anderson is among the preseason All-America candidates and one of the premier rushers in the region. He averaged 7.1 yards per carry last year and went for 1,150 yards and 14 touchdowns. He s also a weapon as a pass catcher out of the backfield and finished fourth on the team in receptions last year with 24 catches for 287 yards and one TD. The New Haven defense finished the 2015 season ranked first in the NE-10 and 10th in the nation in scoring, allowing just 17.6 points per game. 17 HEAD COACH SHAWN LUTZ Shawn Lutz was named the 16th head coach in Slippery Rock football history on Dec. 18, 2015 after finishing his fourth season as The Rock s associate head coach, eighth season as defensive coordinator and his 20th overall season as a member of The Rock s staff in Lutz has been an integral part of Slippery Rock climbing to the top of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in recent years, as he has guided the defense of the three-time defending PSAC Western Division champions. The Rock have won four of the last five PSAC West titles, have claimed back-to-back overall PSAC titles and have made three straight trips to the NCAA Division II playoffs, including a trip to the quarterfinals last fall. Slippery Rock is one of only six programs in Division II to appear in the last three playoff tournaments. Slippery Rock s defense has annually ranked among the best in the PSAC under Lutz, and that was true again in The Rock defense shattered multiple school records on the way to the NCAA quarterfinals, including putting up the best rushing numbers in program history. The Rock defense, led by the defensive line (also coached by Lutz), allowed just 2.2 rushing yards per carry and 71.7 rushing yards per game on the season. Those numbers gave Slippery Rock the second best rushing defense in the country. The Rock also led the nation in takeaways with 47, finished first in the nation in fumble recoveries with 23 and finished third in the country in interceptions with 24. In addition to those numbers, The Rock defense led the country in scoring with eight touchdowns of their own, ranked sixth in tackles for loss with an average of 9.4 per game and ranked seventh in sacks with an average of 3.43 sacks per game. Slippery Rock also shattered program records for most passes defended (112), fumbles recovered (23), fumbles forced (19), tackles for loss (132.0) and interceptions returned for touchdowns (4). Lutz has coached one of the best starts to any individual career in NCAA history in redshirt junior defensive end Marcus Martin, who has recorded 31.5 sacks in just two years and is the only active player at any level of NCAA football to average more than 1.00 sack per game. Martin, who averaged an incredible 1.21 sacks per game through the 2015 season, was named the PSAC West and Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year in He is on a pace that could see him shatter the all-time NCAA sack record. The success of the defense in 2015 was no surprise after what the 2014 unit was able to accomplish. Despite losing eight starters after the 2013 season, including all the linemen and linebackers, The Rock s defense helped lead the way to a PSAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in SRU s defense ranked eighth in the nation in rushing yards per game allowed (92.3), 20th in passes intercepted (16) and 22nd in third down conversion defense (31.8 percent). The 2013 Rock defense ranked fourth nationally among NCAA Division II teams in pass defense efficiency (97.46), fifth in third-down conversion (.265) and 25th in rushing defense (121.8 yards per game). SRU ranked second among the PSAC teams in rushing defense. 18 HEAD COACH SHAWN LUTZ Those efforts resulted in seven Rock defenders earning All-PSAC Western Division honors, five garnering All-Region honors and senior linebacker Quindell Dean, now an assistant coach on Lutz s staff, being named to All-America honors. In 2012, The Rock ranked 10th nationally in third-down conversion and 25th in pass defense efficiency. SRU was third in the PSAC in interceptions (16) and fifth in rushing defense (138.7 yards per game). The 2011 Rock defense led the PSAC in both total defense (261.2 yards per game) and rush defense (80.0 yards per game), tied for second in interceptions with 20 and ranked third in scoring defense (16.5 points per game). Behind the efforts of all-star performers Brandon Watters, Jake Wickline and Zach Sheridan, The Rock defense ranked third nationally in rushing defense, fourth in total defense, sixth in scoring defense and ninth in pass efficiency defense ( In 2010, The Rock s defense ranked second in the PSAC and 17th nationally in pass defense. Lutz s defense also produced two All- Region selections, (Sheridan and Robert Doiley) and two All-PSAC choices (Doiley and Andre Freeman). Lutz served 10 seasons as defensive line coach and seven seasons as recruiting coordinator before assuming the reigns of the defense in He added the title of associate head coach in 2012 as Slippery Rock began a long-term plan to transition him into the head coaching role. He wasn t always a defensive guy, as he also tutored the tight ends and tackles in 1998 and served as graduate assistant in 1996 and 1997, working with the offensive linemen. Under Lutz s leadership, The Rock defensive line has carved out an impressive niche. He has coached nine linemen that earned All-America citations and 24 All-PSAC honorees. Lutz-coached defensive linemen have led the PSAC in quarterback sacks five of the last eight seasons and currently hold or share eight school records. As a player, Lutz was a three-year letterman as a tight end at West Virginia University. He was a member of two bowl teams. One of those teams finished the regular season unbeaten, won the Big East Conference championship, played in the Sugar Bowl and had a No. 6 final national ranking. Lutz received his bachelor s degree in secondary education/social studies from WVU in 1996 and received his master s degree in sport management from SRU in A native of Massillon, Ohio, Lutz and his wife, Julie, are the parents of three sons, Logan, Gavin and Easton, who was just born in August of The Lutz s reside in Grove City. 18 -Rock Football Game Notes
