2 FERRIS STATE TO HOST LIONS CLUB HOLIDAY CLASSIC First-Ever Event Includes Four Great Lakes Regional Squads The Ferris State University Athletics Department, in conjunction with the Big Rapids (Mich.) chapter of the Lions Club International, will host the first-ever Lions Club Holiday Men's Basketball Classic Monday and Tuesday, Dec , at FSU s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The classic features four NCAA Division II men s basketball contests involving two schools apiece from both the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). In addition to the host Bulldogs, who compete in the GLIAC, the field also includes Southern Indiana and Indianapolis of the GLVC along with the GLIAC member Wayne State. Both the FSU Athletics Department and the local Lions Club have partnered with other service clubs throughout the district to promote the event in various schools and civic organizations across the area. The Ferris State University men s basketball program, which claimed the GLIAC North Division championship, compiled a overall record in , including a 14-4 GLIAC North Division mark under head coach Bill Sall. FSU has won more GLIAC championships (10) than any other league member. Wayne State, Indianapolis and Southern Indiana all reached the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament in USI earned NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up honors after claiming the regional title and concluding the year with a 28-7 overall record. The Screaming Eagles posted a second-place 15-5 record in the GLVC. Indianapolis compiled a overall record along with a fourth-place (12-8) GLVC mark while WSU registered a overall record and advanced to the regional finals after placing third (11-6) in the GLIAC s South Division. The International Association of Lions Clubs is the largest service organization in the world with over 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs covering 193 countries and geographic areas. Lions Club members give their time, skills and resources to raise funds for charitable giving both in their communities and internationally. They answer the needs challenging the communities of the world and tackle problems such as blindness, drug abuse prevention and diabetes awareness. Lions Clubs also work to improve the environment, build homes for the disabled, help youth groups, conduct hearing programs and provide disaster relief around the world. Here is the Lions Club Holiday Classic Schedule: Monday, Dec. 20 Wayne State vs. Indianapolis, 5:30 p.m. (EST) Southern Indiana at Ferris State, 7:30 p.m. (EST) Tuesday, Dec. 21 Wayne State vs. Southern Indiana, 5:30 p.m. (EST) Indianapolis at Ferris State, 7:30 p.m. (EST) Jim Wink Arena: The Site Of The 2004 Lions Club Holiday Classic The new Jim Wink Arena in the FSU Sports and Convocation Complex became the home of the Ferris State University men s and womens basketball programs on Nov. 30, The 2,400- seat arena replaced Old Wink Arena, which had housed the men s basketball team since the campaign. The Bulldog men s and women s teams are presently midst their sixth season of action in the facility. The need for a new court became necessary after plans were revealed to remodel Old Wink Arena and the remainder of the Health and Physical Education (HPE) Building. The project, which resulted in the state-of-the-art Student Recreation Center, began immediately following the completion of the basketball season. Ferris State was without a home basketball court in as construction continued on its new arena, forcing the Bulldogs to play their home games at Big Rapids High School. Construction on the new facility began in July 1998 when Granger Construction broke ground on the project, and was completed in September The basketball programs moved into an arena that includes locker rooms, athletic training facilities and equipment rooms. In addition to standard bleachers, 350 luxury chair-back seats were installed on the North side of the court. The expanded lobby area between Wink Arena and Ewigleben Ice Arena includes restrooms, concession stands, a ticket office and pro shop. The arena is named after legendary men s basketball coach Jim Wink. Wink, who passed away Aug. 26, 1987, won a team-record 326 games while coaching the men s program from and was inducted into the Bulldog Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.
