Ti p - o ff at the Oma ha Civic Auditorium is 2:05 p.m. The game is not being televised. Scouting the Bluejays Despite a true freshman point guard and the lack of a senior on its roster, Creighton has won nine of its last 10 games and is in sole possession of first place in the Missouri Valley Conference. Creighton s 9-1 mark in the MVC is their best league start since , a year in which they won the MVC title with a 10-0 league mark. A sign of optimism during CU s seasonhigh seven-game win streak is the emergence of freshman point guard Tyler McKinney. McKinney has averaged 6.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while turning the ball over just four times since being inserted into the starting line-up at the start of this hot stretch. Despite knee surgery that caused him to miss thr ee ga mes, Kyle Korver l e a d s Creighton in scoring (15.3), assists (3.25) and steals (1.81) while ranking as the team s second-best rebounder (5.3). Center Brody Deren scores 10.7 points and averages a team-high 5.6 rebounds per contest, while sixth man Terrell Taylor averages 10.5 points per game off the bench. Scouting the Salukis S o u t h e r n Illinois owns a league-best 18-4 record this season and are in second place in the Valley with an 8-2 league mark. Among SIU s non-conference wins were Indiana, Iowa State, George Mason, Murray State and Saint Louis. SIU is led by junior Kent Williams 16.6 points per game. Williams also leads the team with 44 three-pointers made. Virginia Tech transfer Rolan Roberts scores 13.1 points and pulls down 7.2 boards per game in addition to his le ague-be st 57 blocke d shots. Roberts shoots 59.9 percent from the field, but just 39.8 percent at the free throw line. Also scoring in double-digits is Jermaine Dearman (11.4). As a team, SIU shoots 46.1 percent from the floor, 36.2 percent from the three-point line and 61.3 percent on free throws. The Coaches C r e i g h t o n s Dana A l t m a n (Easte rn Ne w Mexico, 1980) is in his eighth year as head coach of the Bluejays, owning a (.601) mark at CU and a career ledger of (.582) in his 13th year as an NCAADivision I head coach. Altman was named 2001 MVC Coach of the Year after leading the Bluejays to a 24-8 mark and their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance last year. Creighton has improved its win total in every season under Altman and his teams have played in the postseason in seven of the past 10 years. He s assisted by Greg Grensing, Len Gordy and Darian DeVries. Bruce Weber (Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 74) owns a record in his fourth season at Southern Illinois. Weber arrived at SIU after 18 seasons as an assistant at Purdue under Gene Keady. He is assisted by Matt Painter, Rodney Watson and Chris Lowery. The Southern Illinois Series Creighton leads the all-time series with SIU, The Jays own a 21-9 advantage in Omaha, including a win at the Civic last season. Creighton swept both meetings vs. SIU last year and have won 10 of the last 12 in the series. Probable Starters Creighton (14-5, 9-1 MVC) No. Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Yr. Last Meeting With SIU Terrell Taylor finished with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-11 fie ld goal shooting as Creighton be, SIU stayed close and tied the game at in the second half. But the Bluejays, who led at halftime, used a 27-7 run to go ahead, 71-51, and coasted to the victory. It was the 200th career win for Dana Altman. For the game, CU was 12-of-22 from behind the arc. Taylor was 5-of-7 from three-point range and Kyle Korver was 4-of-8. Ryan Sears and Korver each added 14 points for the Bluejays, who also got 13 points and a game- high 10 rebounds from Ben Walker. It was Walker s fifth point-rebound double-double of the season and the ninth of his career. Creighton s Last Game Kyle Korver scored 20 points as Creighton extended its winning streak to seven games with an win over SW Missouri St. Wednesday. Creighton (14-5, 9-1 MVC) is off to its best conference start since 1943 when the Bluejays won the MVC with a 10-0 record. Ismael Caro scored 14 points and Michael Lindeman had 13 for Creighton, which has won nine of its last 10 games. Scott Brakebill and Terrance McGee scored 23 points each for SMS (10-12, 5-5). Creighton took control of the game by outscoring the Bears 30-7 to take a lead with 4:25 left in the half. Brakebill, who had just two points at halftime, came alive in the second half to keep the Bears in the game. Brakebill scored the first 10 points of the second half for Southwest Missouri and later scored eight straight. His 3- pointer cut Creighton's lead to with 54 seconds remaining, but the Bluejays sealed the win by shooting 7-for-8 from the free-throw line in the final minute. The Bears played Wednesday night without senior starting point guard Robert Yanders, who wa s suspended. Both Korver and Brakebill eclipsed the 1,000-point scoring mark Wednesday. Korver, a junior, increased his career total to 1,004, while Brakebill, a senior, now has 1,013. Triple Trifecta Streak Snapped One of Creighton s most impressive streaks came to an end at Evansville on Jan. 26. The Jays had made three or more three-pointers in 175 consecutive games dating to a overtime loss to Northern Iowa on Feb. 16, In that game, CU was 2-for-16 from long-range. The streak was snapped when CU was 2-for-13 from downtown vs. the Purple Aces. One streak still intact is CU s 231 consecutive games with a three-pointer, including every game under the direction of D a n a A l t m a n. Creighton s last game without a three-pointer was a loss at Illinois St. on Feb. 20, 1993 when Rick Johnson was coach. Super Bowl Sunday History Creighton has never played on Super Bowl Sunday before. However, they have won three straight on Feb Game Benchmark Creighton is 14-5 this season and will once again have a winning record after 20 games. The Jays have gone 14-6 in their first 20 games the last four years, all of which resulted in a postseason bid. Here s a look at Creighton s record after 20 games under Dana Altman. Second Half Te a m Creighton has finished the first half of the MVC record with a mighty impressive 8-1 mark, the 12th straight time that CU has been.500 or better in either the first or second-half of the league season. Here s how Dana Altman s club s have fared in the second half of the MVC season since his arrival: Year First Half Second Half Total (.569) (.609) Deren Earns Scholar-Athlete Honors Center Brody Deren was named the Prairie Farms/Missour i Va l l e y Conference Scholar- Athlete of the Week for Jan Deren, a sophomore from Harlan, Iowa, averaged 12.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game, as the Bluejays defeated Illinois State (63-56) on Jan. 16 and topped Bradley (76-63) on Jan. 19. After collecting 16 points and five blocked shots against Illinois State, Deren, who has a cumulative grade-point average in exercise science, collected eight points and six rebounds in 25 minutes of action vs. Bradley. 40 Percent The Tipping Point By holding Evansville to 30.4 percent shooting from the field on Saturday, Creighton improved to 7-0 this season when holding their opponent below 40 perc ent. Since Dec. 1, 1997, Creighton is 47-1 when holding the opposition under 40 percent. The lone exception in that streak is when Iowa defeated CU behind 39.1 percent shooting in last year s NCAA Tournament. The last time a Creighton lost when a foe shot worse than 39 percent was Feb. 16, 1996 when a Northern Iowa club that included Darian DeVries beat Creighton in overtime. Offensively, Creighton has won its last 27 games when it has shot 45 percent or better, dating to a loss at Wyoming on Dec. 1, SIU has allowed just one team to shoot 45 percent this year when they lost to Colorado State. Best League Start In 60 Ye a r s Creighton s 9-1 start in MVC action is their best open to league play since team finished 10-0 in the Valley. How impressive of a run is that? The last MVC team that finished a season with one loss or less was Bradley s perfect 16-0 season in That BU team contained future NBAers Hersey Hawkins and Jim Les. The last previous team to win 17 games in a year was the Wichita State team that went 17-1 and contain future stars Antoine Carr and Xavier McDaniel. A Grand A c h i e v e m e n t A free throw with 19:09 remaining vs. SMS made junior Kyle Korver the 28th member of Creighton s 1,000-point club. Korver finished that game with 20 points and now has 1,004 career points to his credit. Last season Creighton had two players surpass 1,000-- Ryan Sear s (1,309) a nd B e n Walker (1,238). Sears surpassed 1,000 points in his 97th game (a loss at Wyoming) while it took Walker 105 games (a loss ). Korver s reached that milestone in the 81st game of his career. By comparison, all-time leading scorer Rodney Buford (2,116) scored his first 1,000 points in 59 games and his next 1,000 points in 52 games. Not Just A S h a r p s h o o t e r Don t be misled by the fact that 67.5 percent 108 of 160) of Kyle Korver s shot attempts have been three-pointers this year. The 6-7 forward is also able to play near the basket and draw fouls. Korver has made 65.4 percent of his two-point attempts this year, and had his streak of 20 consecutive games with a free throw attempt snapped at Wichita State on Jan. 22. At the stripe, Korver shoots 86.4 percent on the year and is a CU-record 87.2 percent shooter in his career. Korver By The Numbers Kyle Korver has made three or more threepointers in 42 of his 81 care er games a t Creighton. Creighton is 34-8 in such contests, including a 6-1 record this year. With his shooting display (5-of-9) vs. Bradley on Jan. 19, Korver has now made five three-pointers or more in a game on 12 occasions in his career (CU is 10-2 in such games), including three times this year. Creighton has won each of the last 25 home games they ve owned the halftime lead dating to a defeat to SMS on 12/29/99. In that game, CU wasted a halftime advantage. Their success has not been limited to the Civic Auditorium, as Creighton has won 21 straight games (home and away) when leading at the half and are 34-1 since Feb. 2, 2000 when up at the break. Winter To Remember Both the Creighton men s and women s basketball teams own at least a share of first place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, the only time that s happened this late in the year since the women joined the Valley in Connie Yori s CU women s basketball team was 8-1 on the year, one game ahead of second-place SMS and two games ahead of UNI and Drake heading into Thursday s game at SMS. Since the MVC began sponsoring women s sports, no school has won the men s and women s basketball regular-season titles in the same season. Starting Lineup Survivor Mike Lindeman is the only Creighton player to start all 19 games for the Jays this season. What s surprising is Lindeman did not start any games last year as a freshman. He is one of nine different players to start for CU this season. Starting Lineup With An Iowa Flavor All four Iowa natives on the Creighton roster earned a spot in the starting lineup during Creighton s current winning streak. Those four include Ty l e r M c K i n n e y ( U r b a n d a l e ), K y l e K o r v e r ( P e l l a ), Mic hae l Lindeman ( I o w a Falls) and Brody Deren (Harlan). Bench Getting It Done With 10 players averaging 13.0 minutes per game or more, Dana Altman s club continues to get tremendous production off the bench. In Wednesday s game vs. SMS, Altman played 11 different players, with each one seeing between 10 and 29 points of playing time. The Jays bench has had a player score in double-digits in all but three games this year and have accounted for 26 double-figures scoring outings this season. As a whole, Creighton s bench has accounted for 42 percent of the team s points, 44 percent of the team s rebounds and 44 percent of the team s assists while playing 42 percent of the minutes, as seen below: Stat Starting Five (Pct.) They have won 18 straight when making more than half their attempts dating back to an loss at Evansville on Jan. 23, Grimes & Punishment Sophomore forward Mike Grimes has come off the bench and provided a spark in recent games. In his last seven games, Grimes has averaged 7.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in just 14.3 minutes per contest. For the year, Grimes is averaging 4.9 points and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 61.5 percent from the field. After just one double-digit scoring performance in the first 42 games of his career, Grimes had 10 points (in 13 minutes) vs. Bradley and followed that up with 11 points (in 16 minutes) vs. Wichita State to match his career-high. Guards Turnover Think Creighton doesn t miss Ryan Sears at all? Last year the four-year starter had a solid 137 assists compared to just 63 turnovers. This year, CU s point guards--ismael Caro, Tyler McKinney and DeAnthony Bowden (during the first 12 games before being moved to shooting guard)-- have combined for 102 assists and 71 turnovers. One encouraging sign is that McKinney has had just three turnovers total over the last six games. As a team, last year s team had 64 more assists than turnovers, while this year s team has 11 more assists than turnovers. However, during this current 9-1 stretch they have 28 more assists than turnovers. G u a r d e d O p t i m i s m Tyler McKinney has gained the edge in the battle for starting point guard honors. Creighton is now undefeated in McKinney s eight starts at point guard, a time during which he has 21 assists and just five turnovers. Before McKinney did it at SMS, the last time Creighton had a freshman with four or more assists but no turnovers was when Ryan Sears did it vs. both Indiana State and Bradley during the season. However, Sears never had three straight starts without a turnover, as McKinney did against SMS, Illinois State and Bradley (Jan ). Double-Digit Three s Creighton hit a season-high 10 three-pointers in 20 attempts at SMS while matching a yearly-best by making 50 percent of their attempts. Last year CU had 10 or more three-pointers in eight different games. The Jays have now won 14 straight games when they ve hit 50 percent or better of their three-pointers dating to a loss to Northern Iowa on Jan. 2, 2000 when they were 8-for Creighton Numerical Roster No. Name Yr. In fact, the Jays have made 60 percent or more of their free throw attempts in all 19 games this year and 41 straight contests dating to last year s 14-of-24 (58.3 percent) showing vs. Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 23, I n Southe rn I l l i n o i s loss at Northern Iowa last week, they shot a paltry 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from the stripe.

6 A Trifecta Tradition Based on Creighton s tradition of success and productivity behind the three-point line, you ve got to figure that one of the main points of emphasis for each opposing coach that scouts the Jays is to take away the good looks from long-range. That being said, Northern Iowa joined Southwest Missouri State (on 1/12/98) as the only teams in the last six years to hold CU without a first-half three-pointer. Creighton missed all four first-half three-point attempts vs. UNI on Jan. 5, snapping a streak of 22 straight halves with at least one trifecta dating to a 0-for-5 second half showing vs. Southern Illinois on Jan. 31, Home Sweet Civic Creighton is 25-1 at home since the last home game of the season, losing only to Xavier in that time. Xavier snapped a CU-record 20-game home winning streak on Dec. 20 that had ranked as the seventh longest active streak in Division I. It was Creighton s second non-conference loss at home in the last five seasons, the other being a loss to #19 Tulsa on Jan. 12, Before the Xavier setback, the last time the Bluejays had suffered a home defeat was a loss on Feb. 19, 2000, when Southern Illinois escaped Omaha with a victory. The Jays have won 14 straight conference games at home entering Sunday. Double-Digit Half Dozen Creighton had six players with 11 points or more in its romp over Mississippi Valley State. The last time CU had six players in double-figures was a win over Evansville on Feb. 28, This season, Creighton has had 12 different players score 10 or more points in a game. In fact, the only player who hasn t reached double-digits this year is redshirt freshman walk-on Dan Bresnahan. A March Tradition Did you know that Creighton is one of 25 teams nationally to have played in the NCAA Tournament each of the last three years? The select company, listed alphabetically, includes Arizona, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Creighton, Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan State, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford, Syracuse, Temple, Tennessee, Texas, UCLA, Winthrop and Wisconsin. Mid-Major Update Collegeinsider.com ranks Creighton as the fifth-best mid-major team nationally in their weekly Mid-Major poll. Gonzaga is ranked first, Western Kentucky second, Butler third and Southern Illinois fourth. The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Continent, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Sun Belt, West Coast.
