XU enters the game with a 12-9 (4-6 BIG EAST) record with a 3-6 mark in road games. Providence is coming off a home loss to Butler on Friday, Jan its second consecutive loss. The Friars are 5-16 (2-8 BIG EAST) with a 4-6 record in home games. A win on Sunday would snap the Musketeers longest losing streak of the year and give Xavier the series sweep over the Friars. XU won the first meeting between the two schools, 71-59, on Jan. 4 at Cintas Center. FASTBREAK POINTS Maddison Blackwell scored a season-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting with two 3-pointers at Creighton. The sophomore forward entered the game with only three made 3-pointers on the year (3-of-10). The Musketeers hit 56.3 percent of their 3-pointers against Creighton, going 9-of-16 from behind the arc. The nine 3-pointers is the second most in a game by XU this season, one shy of tying its season high of 10 at Cincinnati on Dec. 14. Jenna Crittendon had 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting at Creighton, her second straight game in double figures. The junior guard has averaged 8.9 points per game during BIG EAST play, up from 4.9 points per game in nonconference action. Maleeka Kynard tied her career high in rebounding with a team-high six rebounds on Friday at Creighton. The senior guard also added seven points and a team-high four assists. XU hit 56.5 percent of its shot attempts in the second half against Creighton. XU opened the second period hitting 11 of its first 16 shots with four 3-pointers. The 65 points at Creighton were the most points by XU in a game since posting 71 in the win over Providence on Jan. 4. The Musketeers were held under 60 points in their previous two outings. LAST TIME OUT The Musketeers dropped a contest at Creighton on Friday, Jan. 30. The Bluejays used a 19-8 run to close the game and scored 17 second-chance points off of 15 offensive rebounds. Creighton also held a advantage in points in the paint. LAST TIME OUT VS THE FRIARS Briana Glover was one of three XU players in double figures in the meeting earlier this season, scoring a game-high 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting. The junior forward was also 7-of-7 from the foul line. Xavier was 30-of-37 from the foul line against Providence. The 37 attempts is a season-high for the Musketeers. Maleeka Kynard scored a career-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting versus the Friars. The senior guard hit three 3-pointers in the win and went 3-of-4 from the foul line. 4 Brian Neal is entering his second season as the head coach of the Xavier women s basketball team and his fourth season overall with the Musketeers. Neal, who was named interim head coach of the women s basketball team on Oct. 9, 2013, was named the program s seventh head coach by Director of Athletics Greg Christopher on Nov. 7, Neal replaced Amy Waugh, who resigned after a two-year tenure with the Musketeers. Brian Neal Head Coach 4th Season (2nd as head coach) Northern Kentucky, 91 Neal spent the and seasons as an assistant coach on the Xavier staff before being appointed head coach. Prior to Xavier, he was the head coach of Thomas More s women s program for seven years. Neal posted a (.847) overall record at Thomas More with six consecutive 20-win seasons and five consecutive Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) championships. Neal was a four-time recipient of the PAC Coach of the Year Award and was twice named the Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. The Saints made five straight NCAA Championship appearances during Neal s tenure. In , Thomas More earned the school s first-ever No. 1 ranking and posted the program s second undefeated regular season in four years while advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Championship for the second time in three seasons. In March of 2011, he was named the Russell Athletics/Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region Six Division III Coach of the Year. Before taking over the reins at Thomas More, Neal was an assistant coach at his alma mater Northern Kentucky University for six seasons under head coach Nancy Winstel. While at NKU, the Norse compiled a six-year record of (.813) and advanced to the NCAA Division II Women s Basketball Championship each season with the school s first-ever national championship coming in All told, NKU made two national title game appearances and four elite eight appearances with Neal on staff to go along with six Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) conference titles. Neal began his coaching career at the Division III level as an assistant coach at Wilmington College from With the Quakers, he was an assistant under head coach Jerry Scheve for a team that posted back-to-back 20-win campaigns in his final two seasons. Neal graduated from Northern Kentucky in May of 1991 with a bachelor s degree in journalism with an English minor. He is currently pursuing a master s degree in sport administration at Xavier. Neal and his wife, Amy, reside in Taylor Mill, Ky., with their four children, Allison, Madison, Emma and Maxwell. 5 XU NOTES SERIES HISTORY WITH PROVIDENCE Xavier is 2-1 all-time against Providence. A win on Sunday would give the Musketeers their first road win in the series. IN BIG EAST PLAY Xavier is 4-6 in BIG EAST play, with a 1-4 mark in road conference games. The Musketeers have lost three straight in BIG EAST action. Raeshaun Gaffney leads the team in scoring during conference play with 11 points per game. Briana Glover has added nine points per game in those outings. XU is averaging 58.4 points per game in BIG EAST play. In road conference games, the Musketeers are averaging 59.2 points per game with a.418 field-goal percentage. Maleeka Kynard ranks third in the BIG EAST in free-throw percentage (.839) in conference only games. As a team, the Musketeers rank fourth (.695). Anniina Äijänen scored six points on 3-of-5 shooting at Creighton in 15 minutes of action off the bench. The freshman forward has hit 59.3 percent (16-of-27) of her shot attempts during conference play. ON THE ROAD Xavier is 3-6 in road games this season. The Musketeers are averaging 65 points per game on the road, led by Briana Glover s 11.3 points per game. The Musketeers have a.435 field-goal percentage in road games compared to a.387 fieldgoal percentage when playing at Cintas Center. Three Xavier players are hitting over 50 percent of their shot attempts on the road in Briana Glover (.519), Leah Schaefer (.543) and Maddison Blackwell (.538). UP NEXT The Musketeers return to action on Feb. 6 against Marquette. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center. STORYLINES ENTERING THE SEASON The Musketeers were picked to finish ninth in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll as voted on by conference head coaches. Xavier returns three starters from a year ago and a total of eight letterwinners. The returning starters include juniors Jenna Crittendon and Briana Glover and sophomore Leah Schaefer. Xavier also returns sophomore Maddison Blackwell who was tabbed to the BIG EAST All- Freshman Team last season. The forward averaged 6.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game during BIG EAST action. She also posted a team-high.457 field-goal percentage during conference play. Xavier has 12 underclassmen on the roster and four upperclassmen, including one senior in transfer Maleeka Kynard. All told, the Musketeers have eight newcomers on the roster. Last season, the Musketeers made 204 three pointers to rank sixth in single-season school history. Xavier attempted 684 three pointers to rank first in school history. Since 2007, Xavier has made five NCAA Tournament Appearances - the second most among current BIG EAST programs. DePaul leads the conference during that span with eight appearances. All told, the Musketeers have made 10 NCAA Appearances.
