2 GONZAGA BASKETBALL John Stockton - Forever A Zag Since taking the hardwood at Gonzaga more than 20 years ago, John Stockton and the small Jesuit University in Spokane have been linked. Stockton remains the player most closely related to the program as he has become one of the National Basketball Association s 50 Greatest Players of All-Time. Stockton finished his Gonzaga career as the first player to surpass the 1,000 point and 500 assist marks during their career. He was named the West Coast Athletic Conference after leading the league in scoring, assists and steals during his senior season. Stockton then became Gonzaga s first player drafted in the first round of the NBA draft as the Utah Jazz selected the point guard with the 16th overall pick. A 10-time NBA All-Star, Stockton currently ranks as the NBA s career leader in assists and steals. Stockton has also won Olympic Gold at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. WCAC Most Valuable Player, 1984 WCAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, 1984 AP Honorable Mention All-American, 1984 CoSIDA Academic All-American, 1984 Bachelor s degree in Business Administration, 1984 NBA 1st Round Draft Pick by Utah Jazz (16th overall) 10 time NBA All-Star NBA s all-time leader in assists and steals Named one of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996) Won Olympic Gold at 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games Won Olympic Gold at 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games Verizon Academic Hall of Fame inductee (2002) GONZAGA ALL-AMERICANS Photos by Gonzaga Sports Information, Gonzaga Public Relations, courtesy of Utah Jazz and Andrew Bernstein (Stockton/Malone Picture) JOHN STOCKTON S GONZAGA CAREER NUMBERS SEASON GP FG FGA PCT FT FTA PCT REB AVG PF-FO A TO BLK ST PTS AVG TOTALS
3 GONZAGA ALL-AMERICANS Dan Dickau - All-American Photo courtesy of Atlanta Hawks Dan Dickau set America on fire in as the Gonzaga University senior became the Bulldogs first first-team Associated Press All-America selection. Dickau helped guide the small Spokane school to a No. 6 national ranking and school record 29 victories. Dickau was Gonzaga s third John R. Wooden Award candidate and the first Wooden Award Top Five All-American. Dickau was also a finalist for the James Naismith Award as he earned Player of the Year honors. He was then selected with the final pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, who in turn traded his rights to the Atlanta Hawks. Dickau continued the long tradition of excellent guard play at Gonzaga, but at the same time put his own unique stamp on the position. He wore No. 21 at Gonzaga because the No. 12 worn by his idol John Stockton has not been available at Gonzaga since Stockton finished playing in Dickau finished his 2-year Gonzaga career ranking fourth on the career 3-pointers list, sixth on the career assists chart and 16th in career scoring with 1,125 points. 4 GONZAGA BASKETBALL Blake Stepp - All-American Blake Stepp once again placed the word GONZAGA on the tips of the basketball world s tongue during the 2004 season as the senior guard helped guide the Bulldogs to their most successful season to date. Gonzaga posted a 28-3 record climbing to No. 2 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll and No. 3 in the final Associated Press poll. Along the way they set a school record with 20 straight wins, a perfect 14-0 WCC mark and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Stepp was Gonzaga s fifth John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year candidate and the third player to earn Wooden Award All- American. He was a second team All-American as selected by the Associated Press and National Basketball Coaches Association, making him the first GU player to earn back-to-back All-America honors after he was an honorable mention AP selection in Winning Freshman of the Year honors in 2001 was a just a sign of things to come for the Eugene, Ore., native as he would go on to win back-to-back WCC Player of the Year honors in 2003 and Stepp became the first Gonzaga player to win multiple awards and only the 12th player to do so in the 53-year history of the. Stepp finished his career as the Bulldogs career 3-point leader with pointers made. He also was one of the school s most double threat players finishing with 1,670 career points (4th at GU) and 640 career assists (2nd at GU). A two-time Academic All- American and the WCC Student-Athlete of the Year, Stepp was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft. 5 GONZAGA ALL-AMERICANS Ronny Turiaf - All-American Quick name the two most famous Gonzaga Bulldogs. Chances are you mentioned John Stockton and Ronny Turiaf and with Zags fans of this generation they may not have necessarily been in that order. A native of Martinique, by way of Paris, France, Turiaf became the face of the Gonzaga Bulldogs program during his four year stay on the Spokane campus. In addition to his friendly smile and talk to everyone attitude, Turiaf could also play a little basketball as he helped the Bulldogs win 107 games and finish with three Top 10 national rankings in the final Associated Press poll. Turiaf earned first-team All- honors three times and was named the WCC in 2005 after averaging 15.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He finished his career ranking fourth at Gonzaga with 1,723 points and 859 rebounds. He also finished as the career leader with 643 free throws breaking the 44-year-old record of Frank Burgess. On the national scene Turiaf was a two-time honorable mention Associated Press All-American. He also finished as a Top 30 Wooden Award Candidate as a junior and senior. In June of 2005 Turiaf was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. Turiaf has since had to place his NBA dreams on hold as he underwent surgery for a heart condition on July 26. The operation was successful and Turiaf has hopes of rejoining the Lakers organization in the near future. To show the impact Turiaf has had on GU fans when a get-well address was set up for the former Bulldog, more than 1,000 fans ed messages on the first day.
