GONZAGA ALL-AMERICANS John Stockton - Forever A Zag Since taking the hardwood at Gonzaga more than 20 years ago, John Stockton and the small Jesuit University in Spokane have been linked. Stockton remains the player most closely related to the program as he has become one of the National Basketball Association s 50 Greatest Players of All-Time. Stockton finished his Gonzaga career as the first player to surpass the 1,000 point and 500 assist marks during their career. He was named the West Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring, assists and steals during his senior season. Stockton then became Gonzaga s first player drafted in the first round of the NBA draft as the Utah Jazz selected the point guard with the 16th overall pick. A 10-time NBA All-Star, Stockton currently ranks as the NBA s career leader in assists and steals. Stockton has also won Olympic Gold at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. 2 GONZAGA BASKETBALL Dan Dickau - All-American Photo courtesy of Atlanta Hawks Dan Dickau set America on fire in as the Gonzaga University senior became the Bulldogs first first-team Associated Press All-America selection. Dickau helped guide the small Spokane school to a No. 6 national ranking and school record 29 victories. Dickau was Gonzaga s third John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year candidate and the first Wooden Award Top Five All-American. Dickau was also a finalist for the James Naismith Player of the Year Award as he earned Player of the Year honors. He was then selected with the final pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, who in turn traded his rights to the Atlanta Hawks. GONZAGA ALL-AMERICANS Dickau continued the long tradition of excellent guard play at Gonzaga, but at the same time put his own unique stamp on the position. He wore No. 21 at Gonzaga because the No. 12 worn by his idol John Stockton has not been available at Gonzaga since Stockton finished playing in Dickau finished his 2-year Gonzaga career ranking fourth on the career 3-pointers list, sixth on the career assists chart and 16th in career scoring with 1,125 points. 3 GONZAGA ALL-AMERICANS Blake Stepp - All-American Blake Stepp once again placed the word GONZAGA on the tips of the basketball world s tongue during the 2004 season as the senior guard helped guide the Bulldogs to their most successful season to date. Gonzaga posted a 28-3 record climbing to No. 2 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll and No. 3 in the final Associated Press poll. Along the way they set a school record with 20 straight wins, a perfect 14-0 WCC mark and a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Stepp was Gonzaga s fifth John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year candidate and the third player to earn Wooden Award All- American. He was a second team All-American as selected by the Associated Press and National Basketball Coaches Assocation, making him the first GU player to earn back-to-back All-America honors after he was an honorable mention AP selection in Winning Freshman of the Year honors in 2001 was a just a sign of things to come for the Eugene, Ore., native as he would go on to win back-to-back WCC Player of the Year honors in 2003 and Stepp became the first Gonzaga player to win multiple awards and only the 12th player to do so in the 53-year history of the. 15 GONZAGA TOURNAMENT TEAMS BULLDOGS HAVE SEASON OF FIRSTS It was a season of firsts in 1994 for Gonzaga. The campaign brought Gonzaga its first West Coast Conference regular-season title, the Bulldogs being the team to catch in going wire-to-wire and finishing with a 12-2 WCC record. The Bulldogs also garnered the school s first post-season bid in its 36-year NCAA Division I history with a bid to the National Invitational Tournament. Gonzaga enjoyed the ride, upsetting Stanford University in the first round on the road. The Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaking setback at Kansas State University in the second round, bringing an end to a 22-8 season. The 22-8 record combined with a 19-9 mark in 1993 and a ledger in 1992 gave Gonzaga 61 wins in three seasons. Several individual accolades came the Bulldogs way. Senior center Jeff Brown was named the WCC Player of the Year and was joined on the All-WCC team by point guard Geoff Goss. Guard John Rillie received honorable mention honors. Brown was also named the GTE/College Sports Information Directors of America men s basketball Academic All-American of the Year and WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Brown led the in scoring for the second straight season with a 21.1 average, and carried a GPA. Head coach Dan Fitzgerald received his second WCC Coach of the Year honor for guiding the Bulldogs to their inaugural WCC regular-season championship in 15 years of conference membership NIT Second Round Front Row (L-R): Trainer Steve DeLong, Assistant Coach Dan Monson, Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald, Assistant Coach Mark Few, Assistant Coach Bill Grier, Manager Pat Davis; Middle Row (L-R): 14 John Nemeth, 10 Matt Bollinger, 24 Jon Kinloch, 22 Matt Stanford, 23 David Cole, 13 Geoff Goss, 11 Kevin Williams; Back Row (L-R): 25 Scott Spink, 32 Scott Morgan, 34 Jeff Brown, 21 Marty Wall, 31 Caslav Trifunovic, 33 Jason Bond, 35 Jason Rubright, 15 John Rillie BULLDOGS HEAD TO THE BIG DANCE A rags-to-riches season landed Gonzaga University its first Tournament title and the Bulldogs inaugural berth in the NCAATournament after 37 years of NCAA Division I membership. The Bulldogs took a rocky road to the Big Dance. After an 11-1 pre-season record, many observers were second-guessing the so-called experts which picked the defending regular-season WCC champions no higher than sixth in any pre-season poll. But an 0-6 start in WCC play had the Bulldogs in the WCC doghouse. The turnaround was quick, and Gonzaga went on a run which saw it win 7-of-8 games in the stretch run of the WCC regular season, enough to give the Bulldogs a 7-7 record and fourth seed in the WCC Tournament at Santa Clara University. The Bulldogs used dramatic, staging comebacks in all three WCC Tournament games. And sharpshooting John Rillie documented his own highlight film with one of the best 3-game performances in the history of the WCC Tournament. Rillie went from the field for 64.3%, from 3-point range (71.4%) and from the free throw line (91.7%) in earning MVP honors. In the NCAA First Round in Salt Lake City, UT, Gonzaga drew the University of Maryland, ranked 10th in the country. In spite of Jason Rubright holding Player of the Year Joe Smith to 9 points for his secondlowest total of the season and a season-low 4 rebounds, the rest of the Maryland arsenal proved too much in an victory, ending a 21-9 Bulldog season NCAA West Regional Front Row (L-R): Manager Drew Dannels, Manager Ryan Fitzgerald, Assistant Coach Bill Grier, Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald, Assistant Coach Dan Monson, Assistant Coach Mark Few, Trainer Steve DeLong; Back Row (L-R): 14 John Nemeth, 10 Kyle Dixon, 24 Jon Kinloch, 32 Scott Morgan, 33 Jason Bond, 21 Paul Rogers, 34 Scott Snider, 35 Jason Rubright, 15 John Rillie, 23 David Cole, 11 Kevin Williams, 13 Jon Miller. 92

GONZAGA BASKETBALL GONZAGA HEADS BACK TO THE POST-SEASON Gonzaga capped the 1996 season with its third straight trip to the post-season, landing its second berth in three years in the National Invitational Tournament. The Bulldogs shared the regularseason title, then advanced to the title game of the WCC Tournament before falling short in their bid for a second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Gonzaga was pitted against Washington State University in the NIT first round, a rematch of a season-opening overtime thriller won by the Cougars in the Spokane Arena. Lorenzo Rollins tried to rally the Bulldogs, but his career-high 30 point performance wasn t enough in a WSU victory. The campaign gained the Bulldogs program added credibility and respect. Gonzaga compiled some impressive facts and figures in a 5-year period. The Bulldogs went 21-9 for their fourth 20-win campaign in five years. In doing so Gonzaga ran its overall record in that span to , the best in the and one of the best up and down the entire West Coast. Gonzaga also continued its mastery of opponents in The Kennel, pushing its 5-year home record to 63-5 (including 51 of its last 54) for a winning percentage of.926. The 96 Bulldogs advanced to the WCC Tournament title game for the second straight year while making its third appearance during the 90s in the championship contest. Point guard Kyle Dixon and center Paul Rogers were selected to the All-WCC team, Rogers fourth in scoring and second in rebounding, Dixon third in assists and fifth in steals in the WCC. Jon Kinloch and Scott Snider were honorable mention selections. Kinloch and Snider were voted to the GTE/College Sports Information Directors of America District VIII All-Academic team. Kinloch sported a 3.67 GPA with a double major in finance and marketing. Snider carried a 3.28 GPA in business management and administration NIT First Round Front Row (L-R): Manager Drew Dannells, Associate Head Coach Dan Monson, Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald, Assistant Coach Mark Few, Assistant Coach Bill Grier; Back Row (L-R): 14 John Nemeth, 11 Kevin Williams, 23 Lorenzo Rollins, 22 Mike Leasure, 32 Bakari Hendrix, 25 Phillip Ball, 21 Paul Rogers, 33 Jason Bond, 34 Scott Snider, 31 Keith Kincaid, 24 Jon Kinloch, 10 Kyle Dixon GONZAGA TOURNAMENT TEAMS 1998 NIT Second Round Front Row (L-R): Student Assistant Kevin Williams, Assistant Coach Mark Few, Head Coach Dan Monson, Assistant Coach Bill Grier, Assistant Coach Scott Didrickson; Back Row (L-R): Manager Aaron Hill, 11 Quentin Hall, 15 Ryan Floyd, 24 Richie Frahm, 22 Mike Leasure, 23 Mark Spink, 34 Jeremy Eaton, 30 Axel Dench, 32 Bakari Hendrix, 31 Casey Calvary, 33 Doug Griffin, 25 Mike Nilson, 13 Matt Santangelo, 10 Carl Crider, Manager Tony Smith. RAGS-TO-RICHES SEASON FOR BULLDOGS Dan Monson s first team as head coach of Gonzaga University will be a memorable one, the Bulldogs standing the basketball world on its ear early and continuing right through to a second-round game in the NIT. The Bulldogs weren t figured to have much chance at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, AK, with such teams as Tulsa, Mississippi State, and 5th ranked Clemson included in the 8-team field. A first night blowout of Tulsa got the attention of the some. A squeaker over Mississippi State in a battle of Bulldogs gained Gonzaga a little more attention. But nobody expected them to manhandle Clemson in the title game. Matt Santangelo was named MVP of the tournament, and the Bulldogs were the darlings of the collegiate basketball world early in the season. But it was a confident team which went 11-4 entering play, a team that had been tested in the most intimidating of arenas. The Bulldogs raced to a 4-0 WCC start, then dropped both ends of a road trip to Saint Mary s College and the University of San Diego. With Bakari Hendrix turning into one of the most dominating seasons in WCC history, the Bulldogs would lose just twice more on their way to a 10-4 record and regular-season WCC crown. Hendrix was named the WCC Player of the Year with his 19.6 ppg and 7.3 rpg, joining John Stockton and Jeff Brown as Bulldogs so honored. Matt Santangelo was selected to the All-WCC squad, and Richie Frahm received honorable mention accolades. Monson was the unanimous choice by his peers for WCC Coach of the Year, and Basketball Times named him the Rookie Coach of the Year. In the WCC Tournament, Gonzaga got a buzzer-beater from Santangelo to defeat Loyola Marymount University in overtime in the first round, the cruised past San Diego Gonzaga, making its fourth WCC Tournament championship game appearance in the 90 s, fell to the University of San Francisco With a 23-9 record and a WCC regular season title under their belt, the Bulldogs believed their chances were good for an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. But the selection committee thought otherwise, and the Bulldogs were off to the National Invitational Tournament for the third time since In the first round Quentin Hall came off the bench to spark a rally by scoring all 17 of his points in the final 11:39 and the Bulldogs had a victory over Wyoming. It was off to the University of Hawai i for round two, the Bulldogs seeing their season end with a setback, their record setting a school mark for wins. 93

GONZAGA TOURNAMENT TEAMS BULLDOGS MOVE TO ELITE STAGE For two weeks in March 1999, the Bulldogs became the darlings of a nation. They captured the hearts and applause of almost every "free agent" fan whose team had not entered the original field of 64 or who had seen their team eliminated along the way to the Elite Eight. But while the clock struck midnight in a setback to eventual NCAA champion University of Connecticut in the West Regional Finals in Phoenix, Ariz., the Bulldogs had nonetheless established themselves as one of the elite programs in the country. The Bulldogs finished with a school-record 28-7 record and a No. 12 final ranking, but more importantly earned the national respect of being among basketball's elite. The season will long be remembered for the runner by Quentin Hall which led to Casey Calvary s put-back at the buzzer to beat Florida in the Sweet Sixteen. During the course of the season Richie Frahm also made a name for himself as one of the nation s top sharpshooters as he set a new single-game scoring record for The Pyramid during the Zags first round win over Memphis in the Preseason NIT NCAA Elite Eight Front Row (L-R): Manager Aaron Hill, Assistant Coach Mark Few, Head Coach Dan Monson, Assistant Coach Bill Grier, Trainer Steve DeLong, Assistant Coach Scott Snider; Back Row (L-R): 24 Richie Frahm, 25 Mike Nilson, 22 Mike Leasure, 31 Casey Calvary, 34 Jeremy Eaton, 33 Eric Chilton, 30 Axel Dench, 32 Zach Gourde, 23 Mark Spink, 21 Damany Hendrix, 15 Ryan Floyd, 13 Matt Santangelo, 11 Quentin Hall. ZAGS TASTE SWEET SUCCESS For the second straight season - and as if to erase all doubt of 1999 being a fluke - Gonzaga University once again made another run at March Madness in After facing one of the toughest schedules in the country including a 10-day span against No. 1 Cincinnati, No. 8 Temple, traditional power UCLA and regional rival Washington; first-year head coach Mark Few guided the Zags to their second consecutive NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. Gonzaga finished the season with 26-wins, the seventh most by a rookie head coach, and a No. 24 national ranking NCAA Sweet Sixteen Front Row (L-R): Manager Aaron Hill, Assistant Coach Scott Snider, 31 Casey Calvary, Trainer Steve DeLong, Assistant Coach Bill Grier, Head Coach Mark Few; Back Row (L-R): 32 Zach Gourde, 23 Mark Spink, 24 Richie Frahm, 13 Matt Santangelo, 21 Matt Kincade, 14 Kenny Williams, 15 Ryan Floyd, 10 John Gebbers, 11 Germayne Forbes, 25 Mike Nilson, 22 Jimmy Tricco, 34 Jay Sherrell, 30 Axel Dench, Assistant Coach Leon Rice. 94

GONZAGA BASKETBALL ZAGS RETURN TO FIELD OF 16 Despite the graduation of five seniors the Gonzaga basketball program continued roll during the season as the Zags made their third consecutive run deep into the NCAA Tournament. Gonzaga joined Duke and Michigan State as the only current schools to have made three consecutive appearances in the round of 16 or better. Led by Player of the Year and Wooden All-American, Casey Calvary, Gonzaga won better than 25 games for the third year in a row finishing with a 26-7 record. Calvary also added to his list of memorable moments in a Gonzaga uniform by breaking a backboard against New Mexico and making the game winning shot against Virginia. While Calvary was the focal point of the team, the Gonzaga program made history of its own by becoming the first school to sweep all of the West Coast Conference post-season awards. Mark Few was named the Coach of the Year, Blake Stepp earned Freshman of the Year honors and senior Mark Spink was named Defender of the Year. Transfer point guard Dan Dickau added to the awards list winning WCC Tournament MVP honors as the Zags downed Santa Clara for their third straight WCC Tournament crown. Along the way Gonzaga rolled off a school record 14-game winning streak while school best 13-1 record in the WCC. Only Santa Clara was able to stop the Bulldogs from becoming the ninth school to post a perfect conference record in the 49 year history of the league NCAA Sweet Sixteen Front Row (L-R): Assistant Coach Leon Rice, Head Coach Mark Few, Assistant Coach Bill Grier, Assistant Coach Scott Snider; Back Row (L-R): Manager Aaron Hill, 14 Kenny Williams, 10 Blake Stepp, 25 Anthony Reason, 33 Cory Violette, 32 Zach Gourde, 34 Jay Sherrell, 31 Casey Calvary, 23 Mark Spink, 22 Jimmy Tricco, 15 Alex Hernandez, 24 Kyle Bankhead, 11 Germayne Forbes, 21 Dan Dickau, Volunteer Coach Tommy Lloyd. GONZAGA TOURNAMENT TEAMS GONZAGA MAKES FOURTH STRAIGHT NCAA TRIP The Gonzaga magic continued into the 2002 season as the Bulldogs advanced to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament behind the inspired play of All- American Dan Dickau and a veteran squad. Along the way Gonzaga set a school record with 29 wins and earned a No. 6 national ranking in both major polls. The season started on a down note as No. 2 Illinois defeated Gonzaga and a less-than-100 percent Blake Stepp. The Bulldogs responded by advancing to the finals of the Great Alaska Shootout. After a loss to Marquette in the Great Alaska Shootout championship, Gonzaga ran off 12 straight wins including thrillers over No. 16 Fresno State and road games at Saint Joseph s and New Mexico. After a conference road loss at Pepperdine, Gonzaga proceeded to string together a school record 14 wins while climbing the national charts to a No. 6 ranking. A fourth straight WCC Tournament championship followed before Gonzaga was saddled with a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament and a first-round meeting with Mountain West regularseason champion Wyoming. The Bulldogs were knocked out in the NCAA first round but Dickau followed with several postseason honors including first-team All-American honors, Player of the Year finalist status and a firstround NBA draft selection NCAA West Regional Front Row (L-R): Assistant Coach Tommy Lloyd, Assistant Coach Leon Rice, Head Coach Mark Few, Assistant Coach Bill Grier, Director of Men s Basketball Operations Jerry Krause; Back Row (L-R): Manager Lucas Rae, 1 Winston Brooks, 10 Blake Stepp, 14 Brian Michaelson, 25 Anthony Reason, 30 Dustin Villepigue, 33 Cory Violette, 35 Ronny Turiaf, 32 Zach Gourde, 34 Jay Sherrell, 15 Alex Hernandez, 24 Kyle Bankhead, 11 Germayne Forbes, 21 Dan Dickau 95

GONZAGA TOURNAMENT TEAMS BULLDOGS EARN AT-LARGE BERTH Gonzaga became the first school to advance to five straight NCAA Tournaments as the Bulldogs received an at-large berth to the 2003 NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs led by Associated Press honorable mention All-American guard Blake Stepp posted a 24-9 record and won their third straight WCC regular-season title with a 12-2 conference mark. Gonzaga opened the season ranked in both national polls but fell out in December despite posting a 3-0 record the week they were dropped from both polls. The Bulldogs could never muster enough momentum to crack the polls again, twice being ranked as the top team also receiving votes. Gonzaga did win the hearts of the nation in March as they knocked off Cincinnati in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Salt Lake City. Gonzaga then played Arizona in the second round in what many people consider the best game of the 2003 NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs would lose the contest in double-overtime as two shots fell short at the buzzer. Along the way Gonzaga earned national recognition with games against national programs such as Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina State and Utah. The Bulldogs also won their third straight WCC Player of the Year honor as Blake Stepp was honored, the first Bulldogs underclassman to win NCAA Second Round Front Row (L-R): Trainer Steve DeLong, Director of Men s Basketball Operations Jerry Krause, Assistant Coach Leon Rice, Head Coach Mark Few, Assistant Coach Bill Grier, Assistant Coach Tommy Lloyd ; Back Row (L-R): Manager Lucas Rae, 1 Winston Brooks, 24 Kyle Bankhead, 10 Blake Stepp, 22 Erroll Knight, 32 Zach Gourde, 33 Cory Violette, 35 Ronny Turiaf, 35 Richard Fox, 42 Sean Mallon, 30 Dustin Villepigue, 23 Tyler Amaya, 14 Brian Michaelson, 25 Tony Skinner, 15 Colin Floyd, 13 Josh Reisman, Manager Ryan Franklin. ZAGS CLIMB TO NO. 2 NATIONAL RANKING Gonzaga continued their run as one of the nation s elite programs making their sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Gonzaga posted a 28-3 record including a perfect 14-0 slate in the WCC. The Bulldogs were led by second-team All- American Blake Stepp who earned his second WCC Player of the Year honor giving the Bulldogs four straight WCC POY honorees. Stepp became the 12th player in WCC history to win the award multiple times. Joining Stepp on the All-American list was junior Ronny Turiaf who earned honorable mention honors giving Gonzaga two All-Americans for the first time in school history. In addition to individual accolades the Bulldogs also set a team record with 20 straight wins and a No. 2 national ranking by the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll and a No. 3 ranking by the Associated Press. The high national ranking landed the Bulldogs a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, Gonzaga s run coming to an end in the second round with a loss to Nevada NCAA Second Round Front Row (L-R): Manager Lucas Rae, Director of Men s Basketball Operations Jerry Krause, Head Coach Mark Few, Assistant Coach Bill Grier, Assistant Coach Leon Rice; Back Row (L-R): 20 Kyle Bankhead, 14 Brian Michaelson, 10 Blake Stepp, 4 Tony Skinner, 33 Cory Violette, 34 Richard Fox, 1 Ronny Turiaf, 32 Sean Mallon, 3 Adam Morrison, 22 Erroll Knight, 5 Derek Raivio, 15 Colin Floyd. 96
