Western Carolina sophomore keeper Jennifer Lauer has been named the Southern Conference s women s soccer player of the week for all matches Sept The award is selected by the league office. Lauer was flawless in goal on the week as the Catamounts went to open Southern Conference play. She posted nine saves to go along with a 0.00 goals against average as WCU tied Elon 1-1 on Friday and topped UNCG 1-0 on Sunday. The Acworth, Ga., native entered Friday s home match against Elon with the Catamounts trailing 1-0 in the 21st minute. Lauer made two second-half saves and Western Carolina netted the match-tying goal in the 76th minute to send the game to overtime. Lauer made another save in the first extra period as WCU and Elon played to the 1-1 draw and she earned her first career decision. Lauer worked nearly the equivalent of a full regulation game, logging a scoreless 89 minutes, 37 seconds in the net. Lauer was rewarded with her first career start two days later at UNCG and didn t disappoint. She made six saves on the day, facing nine shots from the Spartans in picking up her first career win and shutout. The weekly award is the first of Lauer s career. 2 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE NEWS AND NOTES NOTES AROUND THE SOCON Appalachian State The Mountaineers split their first conference matches of the season, falling in double overtime to UNCG, 3-2, and defeating Elon 2-1 in overtime. It was the first road victory over Elon since College of Charleston CofC has now won nine straight SoCon openers and have won both matches of their opening conference weekend in four straight seasons. Sarah Schaidle was named as one of 30 candidates nationally for the Senior CLASS Award. She joins Shawn Ferguson from the men s team, making CofC one of three schools nationally to have candidates on both lists. The Citadel Vanessa Aponte fired seven shots in Sunday s game against Wofford to set a new school record with 160 for her career. Fittingly, the record-breaker came on the game-winning goal as the Bulldogs topped Wofford. Davidson Elon Furman Freshman Stephanie DeVita leads the nation with five match-winning goals and ranks fifth with 10 total goals in 10 matches this season. Georgia Southern The Eagles victory over Chattanooga (5-0) is their largest win since Sept. 19, 2007, when they defeated The Citadel, 6-0. UNCG The Spartans continued their 16-game road winning streak in SoCon play with a 3-2, double overtime win at Appalachian State on Friday. The stretch dates back to Oct. 2, 2011, when the Bulldogs played to a 1-1 draw versus with The Citadel at home at the Samford Track and Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs have not been defeated by a SoCon opponent since Nov. 7, 2010, when Samford dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to UNCG in the championship match of the SoCon Tournament. Chattanooga Western Carolina Tied Elon 1-1, in its second straight double overtime game on Friday Sunday marked just the second time in school history Western Carolina has come away with a win at UNCG The last win at UNCG was a 1-0 victory on Sept. 27, 2002 The Western Carolina win snaps the Spartans three-match winning streak over the Catamounts Western Carolina shot above.500 for the first time this season with a record. CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT The 2012 Southern Conference Women s Soccer Championship remains an eightteam format this year. The eight teams with the highest point totals at the end of the regular season will advance to the conference championship with teams 1-4 hosting teams 5-8 in first round matches on Sunday, Oct. 28.
