The Tournament This weekend s Chevrolet Classic features four teams: Arkansas State, Boston College, Tennessee Tech and host Michigan State. The first-round games mark the season openers for all four teams. Tennessee Tech and Boston College face off in the second game of the opening night at 9 p.m., while the Spartans and Arkansas State tip off at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17. The winners of the two games will meet in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 18. The two other teams will meet in a consolation game. The 2000 tournament marks the Eagles second appearance in the event s 13-year history. In 1992, the Eagles fell to Oregon in the first round, 89-54, before defeating Iowa State in the consolation game, Season Openers Boston College is in season openers including a 12-5 record at home, 6-3 record away and 0-2 record in neutral contets. In each of the last three seasons, the Eagles have won the first game of the season. Last season, Boston College defeated Maine in Orono, 83-65, in the first round of the Preseason WNIT. In 1998, BC topped Massachusetts, 72-66, at home. In 1997, the Eagles defeated Marist, , at Conte Forum in the season opener. Against Tennessee Tech The first round meeting in the Chevrolet Classic between Boston College and Tennessee Tech will mark the second all-time meeting between the two schools. On Dec , the Eagles and the Golden Eaglettes met in the championship game of the Pepsi-Church s Classic at the University of Miami. Boston College won, 68-60, in that contest. Against Arkansas State A possible second-round matchup against the Lady Indians of Arkansas State will mark the first meeting between the two teams. Against Michigan State The possible final-round matchup between Boston College and Michigan State would mark the second meeting between the two schools. On November 22, 1998, the Spartans traveled to Boston to play the Eagles and participate in the fourth-annual Reebok Classic held at the FleetCenter. In the second half, BC held an advantage until the buzzer at the end of regulation when MSU s Maxann Reese nailed a three-pointer to tie the game, 64-64, and send the game to overtime. BC s Alissa Murphy s 19 points led the Eagles to the win, the first ever over a Big Ten opponent. Against the Conferences Against the Ohio Valley Conference, Tennessee Tech s conference, BC holds a 1-0 advantage with the sole game played against the Lady Eaglettes. Against Michigan State s Big Ten Conference, the Eagles are 3-11 with wins coming against Michigan State ( Reebok Classic), Ohio State (1999 NCAA tournament first round) and Northwestern ( ). Boston College has not played a game against a team in the Sun Belt Conference, Arkansas State s affiliation. The Coach Head coach Cathy Inglese is entering her eighth season at the helm of the Boston College women s basketball program. Inglese arrived at Boston College in 1993 after serving as the head coach at the University of Vermont for seven seasons. In her tenure at BC, she has registered a record of , and has a career record of She recorded her 100th victory at Boston College on January 12, 2000, with a win over St. John s. In , Inglese led the Eagles to the best-ever season in school history with a 26-9 record and a second-straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. Inglese led the team to a 22-8 record and was voted BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year. During her stint at Vermont, she became the winningest college basketball coach in the nation over the and seasons. Inglese s teams were undefeated in regular-season play in both (29-0) and (28-0), and became the only Division I men s or women s team to have back-to-back perfect records. She earned District I coach of the year and North Atlantic Conference coach of the year honors in , and and was a national coach of the year finalist all three years. A 1980 magna cum laude graduate of Southern Connecticut State College, Inglese was inducted into the school s athletic hall of fame. To start the season, the team advance to the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT before falling to third-ranked Georgia in the semifinals. A 12-game win streak highlighted the midseason, which included a championship at the State Farm Classic at the University of Florida. BC advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST tournament for the first time since 1990 before falling to eventual league and national champion Connecticut. 3 second NCAA tournament in two years before falling to Virginia in the second round of the annual event. Senior Cal Bouchard was named to the all-big EAST First Team while junior Jamie Cournoyer was named the league s most improved player. Cournoyer joined senior Alissa Murphy on the all-big EAST third team. After the conclusion of the season, Bouchard was named BIG EAST Women s Basketball Scholar-Athlete and also earned a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. She was also the first Boston College player to play in the Olympics when she was named to the Canadian Olympic team that played in Sydney, Australia. Captains Named The two seniors, Jamie Cournoyer and Danielle O Banion, will serve as team captains this season. Cournoyer, a center, was named BIG EAST most improved payer last season while O Banion was one of the team s most potent long-distance threats in the backcourt. Breezy s Back Junior Brianne Stepherson is ready to tip off the season after returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee suffered last offseason. In the team s two exhibition games the team s point guard showed no signs of the injury. Against the National Women s Basketball League Elite team, she netted 10 points, while pulling down six rebounds and adding three assists in 27 minutes of play. In the second exhibition game against EOS Malbas Sweden, she scored five points, and also added a team-high five assists in 30 minutes. ESPN/USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll 1. The ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll has Boston College ranked 22 nd. In the Associated Press poll, the Eagles are the second-highest also receiving votes team. Five other polls have Boston College ranked in their top 25 polls. Basketball News put the Eagles at 18 th in the nation, Lindy s has them listed in 25 th, Preview Sports has BC ranked 22, as does Women s Basketball Journal. Eagles Chosen Fourth in BIG EAST In the second toughest women s basketball conference in America according to the RPI ratings for the season, Boston College was selected fourth in the BIG EAST in the annual preseason coaches poll. National champion Connecticut was chosen first followed by 2000 Final Four participant Rutgers and Notre Dame. Jamie Cournoyer Brianne Stepherson Becky Gottstein CONSECUTIVE STARTS 35 games 16 games 2 games Gottstein s Preseason Honors Junior Becky Gottstein was named to the preseason all-big EAST second team, voted on by the league s 14 head coaches. She was one of two juniors named to the preseason first and second teams. She and UConn s Sue Bird are the only two juniors on a BIG EAST presseason team. Notre Dame s Alicia Ratay, the 2000 BIG EAST rookie of the year, is the only sophomore selected. Seven seniors were chosen between the first and second teams. Gottstein was also a preseason Street & Smith Honorable Mention Pick All- America pick. Byars Welcomed Junior Rachel Byars, a transfer from Western Kentucky, had a career day in her first outing in an Eagle uniform. Against the National Women s Basketball League in the team s first exhibition match, Byars came off the bench to score 17 points and pull down 14 rebounds. She was seven-for-16 from the floor and three-of-six from the line in 32 minutes. The guard/forward also copped a teamhigh six steals in the game. In the second exhibition against EOS Malbas Sweden, she netted nine points on four-for-five shooting and also included a three-point basket. She also pulled down six rebounds in 25 minutes in the game. Changing of the Guards With the graduation of all-big EAST senior guards Cal Bouchard and Alissa Murphy, two new faces are set to join the Eagle backcourt and usher in a new era of top guard play. Freshman Amber Jacobs has already made her mark on the backcourt. In the team s first exhibition game of the season against the National Women s Basketball League, the Clarks Summitt, Penn., native came off the bench to score 10 points and add four assists and five steals. In the second preseason tune-up, she led all scorers with 22 points on nine-for-17 shooting, including four-for-nine from three-point range. She also added five rebounds. Classmate Janelle McManus showed why she broke former Tennessee star Chamique Holdsclaw s conference scoring record in high school. She pumped in 19 points off the bench and was the game s second-leading scorer behind Jacobs in the EOS Malbas Exhibition game. She also dished out four assists and pulled down three rebounds. Ranked Opponents Six of the Eagles opponets are ranked in the top seven of the preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The same teams were also ranked in the top eight of the Associated Press Poll. Connecticut occupies the top spot in both polls, followed by Tennessee. Duke, Purdue and Notre Dame fall between three and six, along with Georgia - who the Eagles played last season, in the two polls. Rutges is seventh in the Coaches Poll and eighth in the AP poll. Last season, the Eagles were 1-7 against ranked opponets with the lone win coming against No. 22 Duke in the second round of the Preseason WNIT. In that same tournament, Boston College faced No. 3 Georgia in the semifinals, falling 78-70, and No. 15 Illinois in the consolation game, falling Later in the season, No. 1 Connecticut topped BC, 84-77, and No. 5 Notre Dame defeated the Eagles Boston College also fell to No. 8 Rutgers, In the BIG EAST tournament, the Eagles faced top-ranked UConn again, dropping a decision. 5 Sister Act Boston College boasts two sisters on the roster this year. No. 54, Becky Gottstein returns for her junior year, while she is joined by her sister, freshman Carolyn, who will wear number 55 this season. Records Watch Two BC players will have the opportunity to crack the all-time records lists at BC this season. Juniors Becky Gottstein and Brianne Stepherson will soon move among the leaders in several categories. Gottstein already holds the single-season record for field goal percentage with a 57.5 percent performance in her freshman campaign and is ninth in the single-season rebounding records with last season s 9.6 rebounds per game average. This season, the forward will make a runs at the single-season scoring and rebounding lists. Eagle legend Sarah Behn is 15 th in single-season scoring with 428 points. Gottstein should also break into the career marks this season in both scoring and rebounding this season. She is 75 rebounds shy of the all-time top 10. On the points list, she needs just 449 points to move into 10 th place in the record books. Last season, she scored 325 points despite missing twelve games with a stress fracture in her ankle. Stepherson could position herself among the leaders in two categories: steals and assists. In assists, Stepherson is already 10 th all-time with 242 and should move into the top four this season. Last year, she had 130 assists. Alissa Murphy is currently fourth with 301. Stepherson has 74 career steals through her first two years of play and only needs 34 more to crack the top 10. Joanie Gallagher 95 is 10th with 108 steals. Last season, Stepherson stole 47 balls from the opponents. Exhibition Recap National Women s Basketball League In the first of two preseason tune-ups, the Eagles faced a team from the National Women s Basketball League Elite. Defeating the touring team 73-48, several Eagles had an opportunity to show off their skills for the first time in Eagle uniforms. Junior transfer swing player Rachel Byars had a double-double with 17 points an 14 rebounds to lead both categories. Freshman guard Amber Jacobs scored 10 points off the bench and added a team-high four assists. Junior point guard Brianne Stepherson also netted 10 points and pulled down six rebounds. Jacob s fellow freshman backcourt newcomer Janelle McManus tallied eight points in just 16 minutes. The Eagles were up only by nine points, 24-15, with 4:44 left in the first half, but went on a 11-0 run to close the half and took a lead into the locker room. With 6:23 left in that game, the NWBL had scraped the Eagle lead down to 15, but over the game s closing minutes, Boston College outscored the semi-professional league for the final margin of victory. Combined, they were 7-16 from behind the three-point line. Junior Becky Gottstein netted 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in her return from a sprained ankle. The Swedish team took a 12-point lead midway through the first half, 24-12, and even led at the half, 37-33, but the Eagles began slowly chipping away at the lead to start the second half. Homecourt Advantage When the Eagles tip off their home schedule on Nov. 22 against Duke, the Blue Devils will have a tough going at Conte Forum. Boston College currently sports a 16-game winning streak dating back to February 17, 1999 when the Eagles defeated Vilanova, During the season, BC mounted a perfect 14-0 campaign at home, outscoring their opponents by 21.8 points per game. Summer Tour Junior Nicole Conway was a member of the 2000 BIG EAST Women s Basketball All-Star Team this summer that toured Canada at the beginning of June. The team, comprised of one member from each of the league s 13 teams last season, went 5-1 on the goodwill tour. Conway averaged 8.2 points per game in the six contests and 2.7 rebounds per game. She scored a game-high 16 points in the BIG EAST s first win of the tour, a victory over Simon Fraser in the second game on the road. During the summer of 1999, head coach Cathy Inglese, assistants Kelly Cole and Bill Gould, center Jamie Cournoyer and trainer Donna Bennett all represented Boston College on the trip through Europe with a 4-1 record. Return from Injury Sophomore forward Maureen Magarity returned from an injured left foot in the second exhibition game against EOS Malbas Sweden, with which she missed time due to a stress fracture. Seeing her action since last season, she came in and played two minutes and made one steal. Injury Report Everybody on the Boston College roster is expected to be available for this weekend games. Two Eagles are healthy after missing the first two exhibition games. Freshmen Carolyn Gottstein has recovered from a bone contusion in her right knee, while classmate Maureen Leahy has returned from a viral infection. Mackie Out Junior Kim Mackie will miss the season after undergoing reconstructive surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee suffered in a preseason practice.
