6 Presidents Report 2016 Welcome to the Southern Peninsula Basketball Association AGM 2015/2016. I am pleased to write that we have experienced another year of positive consolidation both on and off the court. Our financial stability continues to strengthen with a positive forecast for year 2016/2017 and our on court programs and Domestic growth sees us close to 85% capacity. We have recently undertaken a member survey and the feedback was both very informative in that we were given a clear indication of what is working and what needs some attention, it also gave us your thoughts on a number of initiatives that we will be looking to implement. Our growth in the Domestic program can be attributed to the expansion of the Premier League to U16 and U18 age groups, our Sunday Mixed competition continues to grow and we will also be trialling an U23 competition this coming summer season. We have undertaken a number of maintenance projects with the upgrade of the Dromana car park lights, painting in the foyer at Dromana and extensive painting in the foyer and toilets at Rosebud. We are currently sourcing quotes for major infrastructure works to the Dromana toilet block. Other expenditure includes the restructure of the Referee program to include nightly court Supervisors to improve the experience for all our members and have a point of contact should a situation arise. Our Representative Program continues to excel at both senior and junior level. Our State Championship Women s team played finals for the second consecutive year and, as was the case last year, were beaten by the eventual Championship winning team. Our Youth League girls had a very tough year but with an average age of 14 years in an U23 competition the 6 wins they achieved was an outstanding effort particularly when they defeated the eventual Champions in the last weekend of the season. We are very pleased to announce that we are in a prime position to re-enter our Men s team into Div. 2 for the upcoming season. With a coach committed to the next 2 years and a very solid core group of players mixed with our own youth players we are very excited for year 2017 in the BIG V. The Board of Management has recently employed the services of a consultation organisation, Terry Dillion Solutions, to undertake an Association health check to determine our key areas of focus moving forward over the coming 12 months. Terry Dillion comes with excellent credentials with his success at West Coast Eagles Football Club and the Hawthorn Football Club. Our health check has identified 15 key areas that the BOM will be focusing on over the next 12 months some of which include sponsorship levels, engaging key personnel, obtaining Government grants and improving our volunteer base. I want to take this opportunity to thank 2 departing Board members in Nicole Wicks and Cameron Richards. Both Nicole and Cameron have been key contributors to the clubs consolidation over recent years and we wish them all the best. With our action plan set out from our health check and a very positive financial forecast for the next 12 months we are looking forward to a very exciting year ahead of us. Southern Peninsula Basketball President Glenn Shannon
7 Director of Coaching & Dev Report 2016 The Southern Peninsula Basketball Association has enjoyed yet another year of success on court, with both our Junior & Senior Sharks teams. We have also seen the introduction of a new development program in the Premier League, which has given many local players the opportunity to further develop and play at a higher level, locally. Our Junior Sharks Program has continued to grow in strength, with many of our teams playing at a higher level than that of previous years, and we have also seen greater numbers selected in to Basketball Victoria Country Programs, which is a sign that our development programs are working. We have also been fortunate enough to have a number of local coaches appointed to State Head Coaching positions, along with two assistant coaches being appointed, this has been a great reward for those coaches who have put in countless hours within our program, developing the juniors. The Senior Sharks Program has had another successful year with both our State Champ Women and Youth League Women performing well, the most pleasing part being the Youth League Program developing a number of local juniors to the point were they will now take up fulltime positions within the State Champ Women s Program. Our Senior Men s Program is back, having just received confirmation that they have been accepted in to the BigV D2 Men s competition. The Men s program is already in pre-season, which has seen many young local players hit the court in preparation for the season tip-off early next year. Lastly, we had three of our Senior Women s Program players depart for college earlier this year, Ella Hellessey (TCU), Eliza West (Utah State), and Courtney Middap (Hawaii), and have all settled in and are doing great! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our players, coaches, managers, officials, and volunteers for their efforts and dedication towards building our program, it is truly appreciated. Director of Coaching & Development Gerard Hillier
8 Domestic Report 2016 The 2016 summer and winter season has seen some great improvements over the past 12 months. In 2016 we had our Import Players Kaitlyn Mileto and Brittany Carter visit many primary schools and conduct free clinics, which was offered to all schools in the area. From these free clinics we have seen increased Aussie Hoops attendance, which we were then able to form domestic teams for our U9 s competitions. We had strong participation numbers with 232 teams in winter and a record 259 teams this new summer season. We have had 29 new teams register this summer season mostly senior teams, which is fantastic news for our Association. We are at 100% capacity on Monday nights and are working on getting a women s competition back up and running on Wednesday nights. SPBA wishes to thank all members that took time to fill out our members survey online. We appreciate all your feedback and we have collated your main concerns, which we are working on to ensure we are continuously working to improve our competitions, referees and facilities. Our referee program is going from strength to strength which is helped with our Dromana Academy Program in conjunction with Dromana Secondary College. All students enrolled in the subject a taken through the referee course. We currently have 48 active refs. - A Grade 14 - B Grade 11 - C Grade 23 We are continuously working on developing our C graders with the work of our Referee Advisor Murray Sydenham and Referee Administrator Ben White. Basketball Administration Manager Bridie McGuire
