The last time the Paladins won a tournament game was in the preliminary round of the 1994 tourney in Asheville, N.C., when Furman knocked off The Citadel (75-70) before losing to eventual champion, Chattanooga (85-81) in the quarterfinals. Although Furman made it to the 1991 tournament semi-finals (via a first round bye) before losing to Appalachian State (87-82), the Paladins have not advanced into the semi-finals with a win since 1990, when Furman knocked off Marshall (82-77) in overtime in the quarterfinals before being ousted by Appalachian State (79-62) in the semi-finals. IT'S VMI AGAIN...Thursday's Furman-VMI Southern Conference Tournament first round clash will mark the 12th time overall and third time in the last four years the Paladins and Keydets have met in league tournament play. VMI outlasted Furman in overtime in the quarterfinals of the tournament, and a year later the Keydets turned the trick again in overtime by edging Furman in a preliminary game. The Paladins' last Southern Conference Tournament win over VMI was a verdict in the preliminary round of the tourney in Asheville, N.C. Overall Furman is 6-5 versus VMI in Southern Conference Tournament action. HIGH NOON SHOWDOWN No. 2...Furman's Thursday first round game tipoff with VMI is scheduled for noon, thereby marking the second straight noon tipoff the Paladins have had following last Saturday's high noon start against the College of Charleston (85-63 loss in Charleston). Should Furman defeat VMI Thursday, the Paladins will face top-seeded College of Charleston on Friday at, you guessed it, noon. FIVE ON THE DOWNSIDE...Furman heads in the Southern Conference Tournament having dropped its last five games and six of its past seven. The fivegame losing skid is the second longest by the Paladins under head coach Larry Davis. A year ago Davis' first team suffered through a six-game losing streak early in the season. Furman's last win was a decision over Western Carolina in Greenville on Feb. 6. MOST WINS SINCE Furman's 11 wins are two more than last season and the most by a Furman squad since the season, when then head coach Butch Estes' Paladins finished WIN OVER VMI BIGGEST IN LARRY DAVIS ERA...Furman's win over VMI in Greenville on Jan. 30 marked Furman's most decisive victory of the season and biggest margin of victory under second year head coach Larry Davis. Paced by senior center Daniel Quigley's career high 23 points and 11 rebounds, Furman raced to a halftime lead and rolled up the Keydets on the boards en route to the win. The Paladins shot a season high 56.9% from the field and held VMI to 29.5% shooting an opponent season low. Stanislav Makshantsev joined Quigley with a solid performance, scoring 17 points and adding 10 rebounds. The Paladins also Keydet guard Jason Bell, the Southern Conference's leading scorer, to only 12 points. LEADING THE LEAGUE..Furman leads the Southern Conference in free throws made (453) and attempted (678). The Paladins also lead the league in 3- point field goal percentage defense (31.0%). VERSUS THE NORTH AND SOUTH...Furman posted a 4-2 record against the Southern Conference Northern Division this year, but the Paladins managed only a 1-9 record against Southern Division foes. FURMAN, THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE, AND THE NCAAs...Furman and the Southern Conference will join Greenville's Bi-Lo Center in hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament in That event will be preceded by the Southern Conference Tournament, which is scheduled to be played at Greenville's Bi-Lo Center beginning next year and in The Southern Conference Tournament will move on to the North Charleston Arena for the 2002 and 2003 seasons. PALADINS SIGN TWO...Furman signed two high school standouts to national letters of intent in November. Darrell Arbaugh, a 6-foot-7 forward from Ashland, Ky., signed with the Paladins first, and two days later Furman inked 6-foot-5 forward Kenny Ziegler from Lithonia, Ga.
