The Bison have had 14 members of the rookie team, 14 second-team awards and 14 first-team honorees, as well as a pair of Defensive Player of the Year citations. The Bison had at least two players honored by the Patriot League every year from 1996 to Only Holy Cross, which has had at least two players cited by the league every year, has a longer streak. Even though Molly Creamer, who was named First Team All-Patriot League three times, Second Team All-Patriot League once, was a member of the All-Rookie Team in and is the only three-time Patriot League Player of the Year in league history, graduated in 2003, Bucknell has still had success in earning postseason recognition in recent years. Since the campaign, the Bison have had six first-team selections and six all-rookie choices. Hope Foster helped end Bucknell s longest streak (two years) without a Player of the Year or Rookie of the Year selection since last season when she copped Player of the Year honors. Among current Bison, she has been showered with the most accolades, earning First Team All-League three times in addition to her Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards. As a freshman, Foster was also a member of the All-Rookie Team with classmate Kesha Champion. In , Bucknell became just the second Patriot League team other than Holy Cross to place at least four players on the league honor roll (first team, second team and rookie team). It also became the second team to place at least two players on the All-Rookie squad in back-to-back years. BISON ON ALL-LEAGUE TEAMS ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE First Team:... Julie Bachman Rookie Team:... 25 RETIRED JERSEY - JENNIFER WALZ #12 JENNIFER WALZ 5-8 GUARD MURRAY HILL, N.J./ GOVERNOR Jennifer Walz s jersey was retired prior to Bucknell s game against Drexel on Jan. 20, During her four years at Bucknell, Jennifer Walz compiled one of the finest records of any student-athlete, on or off the court, in Bucknell athletics history, and her accomplishments in athletics took her to national prominence. In January 1985, Walz was a senior at Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights, N.J., about to lead her team to a state championship. She also had a major decision to make as several colleges expressed interest in her. Walz s decision to attend Bucknell centered around academics and her potential role on the team. She knew that Bucknell had the immediate need for someone of her talent, and a coach that would give her the playing time to develop her skills. By the time she graduated, Walz had set and reset a number of Bucknell and East Coast Conference records, and achieved numerous honors. Walz proved herself early in her career. She immediately assumed a starting position her freshman year and remained there throughout her tenure as a Bison. She averaged 15.0 points per game and shot better than 72 percent from the free WALZ S RECORD-SETTING CAREER Single Game Scoring: (twice) vs. Appalachian State (12/30/88) vs. Delaware (2/21/89) Field Goals Made: vs. App. State (12/30/88)^ Field Goals Attempted:...36 vs. Delaware (2/21/89) Single Season Scoring: ( ) Points Per Game: ( ) Field Goals Made: ( ) Field Goals Attempted: ( ) Free Throws Made: ( )^ Free Throws Attempted: ( )^ Career Scoring:... 2,112^ Points Per Game: Field Goals Made: Field Goals Attempted:...1,701 Free Throws Made: Free Throws Attempted: ^- Bucknell and ECC record All records as of graduation in 1989 throw line as a rookie. Walz demonstrated her ability that year against Towson State when, in overtime with 18 seconds remaining and Bucknell trailing 86-84, she dribbled the ball down court and made an eightfoot jumper and drew a foul. She made the ensuing free throw as the Bison defeated Towson State, 87-86, for the first time in three years. The pressure was on Walz following her impressive freshman campaign. She and her abilities were public knowledge, and Bucknell s program was on the rise. In Walz s sophomore year ( ), the Bison rallied for their first-ever winning season, posting a record. In the process, Walz set the first of her many records. Head coach Lori Howard had built a balanced scoring attack by Walz s junior year. Competitors realized Walz would still be a threat though, and kept the pressure on her. Walz was forced to create more open situations for herself, as she improved her passing and ball-handling skills. By her senior year, offensive plays and scoring came naturally to Walz. She collected her points with a deadly outside shot or a drive to the hoop, where she was often fouled. At the close of the season, Walz was the ultimate all-around player and was rewarded for her efforts by being named ECC Player of the Year after averaging a career-high 22.1 points per game. To cap her career, on April 2, 1989, Walz appeared in a segment of The NCAA Final Four Show on ABC-TV. She and Alec Kessler, of the University of Georgia, were honored for academic excellence by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. In her four years at Bucknell, Walz set the tone for future athletes in general, but especially for female players.
