7 BASKETBALL Contact: Debbie Davis ::: ::: (o) ::: (f) East Carolina (3-5, 0-0 C-USA) East Carolina jumped out to an early 15-4 lead, sparked by two straight Jasmine Young 3-pointers, but the Pirates couldn t hold on as they suffered a loss to VCU Saturday afternoon at Minges Coliseum. Young led the Pirates with 16 points while junior guard LaCoya Terry added 12 points and seven rebounds. East Carolina Tiahana Bowens basket at the seven minute mark pulled the team to within six, 46-40, but the Pirates could not get any closer, as VCU went on to win. ECU will host North Carolina State on Sunday at 2 p.m. This game will be aired locally on WITN. Houston (3-6, 0-0 C-USA) Houston snapped a 16-game road losing streak by knocking off previously undefeated Texas Tech Tuesday at the United Spirit Arena. Houston won its first road game since February 2006 and its first game in Lubbock since Feb. 9, Texas Tech (9-1) had won each of the previous 16 meetings in the series. Twiggy McIntyre scored a gamehigh 17 points, 12 of them on 3-pointers. Houston built a 7-point lead midway through the second half by scoring 10 straight, including a pair of 3-pointers by McIntyre. Houston finished the game on an 11-5 run, including five from Courtney Taylor. She blocked a shot and then drove the court and scored on a layup to give the Cougars a 4-point lead with less than a minute to play. Taylor had her second-career doubledouble with 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. UH continues a three-game road trip on Dec. 8 at Miami (Fla.). The Cougar and Hurricanes will tip it off at 1 p.m. CST at the BankUnited Center. Marshall (4-4, 0-0 C-USA) Senior Kizzy Hart scored a career-high 23 points as Marshall defeated North Texas, 82-70, Tuesday at the Super Pit. Hart s total of 23 marked the most points scored by a Marshall player this season and also the first 20-point game since Meg Withrow had 20 against East Carolina on January 28. Casey Baker, not to be overshadowed by Hart, also set a first for the team this season, notching the first double-double since Modupe Ishola did it against UCF last year. Baker scored 14 points to go with a career-high 11 boards. She also tied her career mark of five steals, which she set on Saturday against Pittsburgh. Rounding out Marshall s four double-digit scorers were Alix Barnette and Tynikki Crook. Barnette had 14 points for the second time in three games and tied her career mark, connecting on three 3-pointers. Crook bested her career-high of nine points with 12. The Herd will have a 10-day layoff before returning to action at Ohio University on December 14. Following that game, Marshall will play host to Navy on December 16. The Navy game will also mark the annual Jam The Cam event. Memphis (2-5, 0-0 C-USA) Junior guard Paris Leonard and senior forward Aroha Jennings led the Memphis offense with 12 and 11 points, respectively, but it wasn t enough as the Tigers were fed a loss by Mississippi State in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse Sunday. Jennings also had five rebounds and was one of five Memphis players to post an offensive board. UofM was out-rebounded at the half, in part due to junior forward Ashley Thornton picking up her third foul on the offensive end. Thornton finished with seven points and seven rebounds. The Lady Tigers will break from competition to focus on exams and practice before hosting Belmont on December 14 at 7 p.m. Rice (6-5, 0-0 C-USA) Kadie Riverin and Tara Watts connected on 14-of-20 shots, including 4-of-5 from the 3-point line as Rice snapped a four-game losing streak and gutted out a hard-fought victory over former Southwest Conference and WAC rival TCU Thursday at Sharp Gym on the Houston Baptist University campus. Riverin matched a career-high with 25 points and dished out seven assists. Watts also tallied career-bests with 17 points, five assists and five steals as the Owls shot a season-high 46.7 percent from the floor. Rice (6-5) also got a double-double from Valeriya Berezhynska, who tallied 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Tiffany Loggins contributed nine points and 11 rebounds.
