1 MARTIN LAIRD ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD (MALE) Liam Varley Club name: Sydney University Ultimate Frisbee Association (SUUFA) Jersey Number: 26 Why we are nominating Liam: This is Liam s second year at SUUFA, and his second year of playing frisbee. Liam is Sydney Uni Ultimate s current president and has vastly improved as a player over the past year. Liam played for Colony s division two team, The Rum Corps at nationals last year and has also played a number of tournaments with the first team. Most notably, he recently played with Colony at the Asia Oceanic Ultimate and Guts Championships in Manila, and off the back of his play there has subsequently been invited to Colony s 30-man world clubs training squad. This year Liam was selected to play in our dominant University Games Squad at both EUGs and AUGS. He helped the EUGs team to a gold medal last semester and is hoping to do the same at AUGs this year. As mentioned above, he was recently elected as president of SUUFA. He is looking forward to continue the work of our previous board and to continue to grow Sydney University Ultimate over the next year.

2 Josh Halliday Club Name/s: Monash Ultimate Frisbee Jersey Number: 6 Australian resident Currently completing a Bachelor of Biomedicine (Monash University) Has not previously competed at Nationals, Mixed Nationals, Beach Nationals or a WFDF event. Monash Ultimate Frisbee (MUF) would like to nominate Josh Halliday for the Martin Laird Encouragement Award. Josh entered the Ultimate Frisbee scene in 2017 and started playing socially, at Monash Ultimate Frisbee. Josh represented the MUF B team at the 2017 Southern University Games. He was a pivotal player for the team, a dominant defensive player who produced many blocks. In addition to this, Josh was a constant positive presence on the sideline, loud and supportive. From here, Josh has recently been selected into the 2017 U22 Victorian Men s team. This is a testament to his dedication to the sport and his willingness to take on feedback and constantly improve himself on the field. Josh has also been an active member in the Monash Ultimate Frisbee community, dedicating his time to assist the committee when needed. Josh has a bright future ahead of him in Ultimate, and has shown a willingness to be an active member in the Ultimate community through his commitment to Monash Ultimate Frisbee.

3 Matt Beevers UQ Ultimate Jersey: 64 Matt (Beevs) Beevers started playing Ultimate in July Playing locally with the club in both the Brisbane mixed league and and premier league for a number of years. He eventually filled in the role of League Director in 2014 at UQ. He became president of the club last year with a passion to increase the amount of club exposure to the wider Brisbane area. The social league grew to record numbers which resulted in the biggest UQ Ultimate presence in the Brisbane ultimate community to date. He revived Brisbane s favourite tournament Lovefest with a record 12 teams participating and there are now 4 teams playing BUML and 2 teams playing BPL that fly under the UQ Ultimate banner. Beevs constantly plays with a positive attitude, a willingness to ask others how to improve and embodies the spirit of the game on and off the field. He is a certified Game Advisor and was one at the Australian Ultimate Championships this year. He won the Brisbane Premier League Guarin Owen Shield which is awarded to players who show positivity fair mindedness, joy of the game and friendliness on the field at all times. He is the current captain of the UQ Ultimate men s team. He has been a huge asset to the UQ Ultimate family and we will miss him dearly when he graduates next semester. We believe he is well deserving of the Martin Laird Encouragement Award

4 Allan Williams #2 UWA Ultimate Club The UWA Ultimate Club is proud to have Allan as one of their newer members, competing this year at his first AUG s. In only his second year of competitive Ultimate, Allan has already competed overseas with the UWA Development Team, playing a key role in their win of the NYP Invitational held in Singapore. He was also a key defensive handler with the WA Division II National Men s team, Bronze Bullseye, competing in Wollongong in Allan is such a great leader for the Club and the players around him. He s always happy to help out with players throwing and will always go that extra mile to help with people s fitness programs and push them to keep improving themselves. He s a great addition to the team as he s one of those few people that can always fire up players when they re feeling down, knowing just the right things to say to keep everyone motivated. This ability to positively influence the people around him, coupled with his quick understanding and analytical outlook of the sport has lead to him being elected as our defensive line captain, in only his first University Games! Allan is a defensive powerhouse, using his speed and strength to consistently get blocks on his players, then easily switching to offense as a handler to convert the goal. Always tasked with the tough matchups, Allan relishes the challenge of shutting down his opponent and we look forward to seeing him in action this week at the 2017 AUGs.
