7 INDIANA BEATS UNC IN ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE BLOOMINGTON, Ind. With a commemoration of the 1981 NCAA Championship team, an appearance from World Series champion Kyle Schwarber, and a Big Ten/ ACC Challenge matchup against No. 3 North Carolina, the atmosphere in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall had all the makings of a wild Wednesday night. But the No. 10 Hoosiers (5-1) decided to add another ingredient to the mix: a wire-to-wire win over the third-ranked Tar Heels (7-1). The crowd at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall reached its boiling point before the start of the national anthem, but the Hoosiers pushed the decibel meter on their first three possessions. OG Anunoby banked a layup in the low post before Robert Johnson splashed a 3-pointer on the next possession. James Blackmon Jr., after assisting on Johnson s three, called his own number from the arc and buried the shot, giving IU an 8-2 lead. The Hoosiers stepped on the gas and did what they ve done so well under head coach Tom Crean, by playing their best against the best. Under Crean, Indiana is unbeaten at home against teams in the top three. For the second consecutive game, Anunoby led IU s attack with 16 points, going 6-for-8 from the field. James Blackmon nearly earned a double-double in his return to the lineup, scoring 14 points with 9 rebounds and a trio of 3-pointers. Indiana s offense showed diversity, however, as all five starters entered double-digit figures. Anunoby gifted Hoosier fans with a shocking highlight play near the end of the first half. Josh Newkirk picked off a passing lane to reverse possession at mid-court and took his dribble to the 3-point arc. He put a pass into Anunoby s hand as he left the ground, and Anunoby stamped the alley-oop with all his might. It wasn t the only time the sophomore made the highlight reel. Anunoby also came from behind to slap a block into the backboard in the second half. The offense pushed IU to a 12-point lead by halftime, and the Hoosiers closed the door with an uncompromising performance on the defensive end. North Carolina guard Joel Berry averaged 18 points per game at the Maui Invitational this year, but the Hoosiers held him to 8 points on a 3-for-13 performance from the field. Furthermore, the Hoosiers pumped the brakes on North Carolina s transition offense to just 2 points. Johnson championed the defensive effort. He matched up against all types of play styles, from Berry to 6-8 forward Josh Jackson, and came away with 3 steals and 6 defensive boards. Curtis Jones came off the bench in a big way as well, with moments like his glass-cleaning put-back against UNC s frontcourt and his pressure in transition to force a turnover out of play. Although they never conceded the lead, Indiana knew they d be in for a fight in the final minutes against Roy Williams Tar Heels. North Carolina closed the gap with a 9-1 run after the uner-8 minutes timeout. Blackmon shifted the pressure to UNC after running across the arc to fire a contested 3-pointer into the twine, followed by De Ron Davis layup on the next possession. Indiana s win, their second over a top-3 team this season, was overflowing with emotion. Nobody put that on display better than Thomas Bryant. The big man finished the night with 12 points and 7 rebounds, going 4-for-7 from the field, and brought the fiery passion Indiana fans are used to seeing. In the first half, he brought the crowd to a roar with a put-back dunk. In the second half, Bryant drove from the wing to sink a baby hook before splashing a 3-pointer from the same spot. IU has now won 25 regular season games against ranked opponents, the highest total in the Big Ten since the start of the season. Indiana s defense was stout, holding UNC to under 70 points for the first time this season. UNC shot less than 40 percent, a season worst, from the floor and less than 30 percent from the 3-point line. IU holds a 9-6 all-time series advantage over North Carolina, including a mark of 4-2 in Bloomington. IU improves to 5-1 on the season, the fifth time the Hoosiers have won at least five of the season s first six games under Tom Crean. With the victory over UNC, Indiana has now won 10 consecutive home games over ranked opponents. IU started quickly in the first half, pushing the lead to as high as 17 points, the largest deficit the Tar Heels have faced this season (previous was four). The Hoosiers took a lead into the halftime break. All five Hoosier starters scored in double figures, the second time this season IU has had five double figure scorers in one contest, the first being the season-opening win over Kansas. OG Anunoby poured in a team-high 16 points for the game. The sophomore added five rebounds and two blocks to his line. James Blackmon Jr. returned, following a one game absence, to score 14 points and dish out three assists. Blackmon, Jr. now has 820 points in 51 career games. He also hauled in a team-high nine rebounds, tying a career high. Thomas Bryant logged big minutes, and recorded 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Robert Johnson tallied 11 points for the Hoosiers, including 10 points in the first half, and grabbed six boards. Johnson came away with three steals, tying a career high. Johnson has drained at least one 3-point jumper in his last 15 games played. Josh Newkirk chipped in 10 points, three assists, a block and a steal. Newkirk has scored double figures in two games this season. Juwan Morgan contributed six points and three rebounds in 21 minutes of game time. De Ron Davis drilled a handful of clutch free throws, and finished the night with five points, three boards and swatted two shots, tying a career high. He has blocked two shots in each of his last two games.

This was the first time that the Hoosiers scored 100 points or more against a ranked opponent since beating No. 17 Tulane, in November of IU won its 19th straight season opener, while snapping the Jayhawks 14-game season opening winning streak. It was the Hoosiers first season opening win away from Assembly Hall since beating Lafayette in the 2006 Preseason NIT at Bankers This was just the second time in nine seasons that IU did not start a freshman in the season opener. The last time came in when Will Sheehey and Victor Oladipo were frosh. Sophomore OG Annunoby and junior Josh Newkirk made his first career starts for the Hoosiers. Junior Robert Johnson made his 56th career start, junior James Blackmon Jr., started his 46th game and sophomore Thomas Bryant was in the starting lineup for the 36th occasion. Blackmon, Jr. has been in the opening night starting lineup each of the last three years and Bryant for the second straight season. Johnson started on opening night as a freshman and this year. Newkirk, freshman Curtis Jones, freshman Devonte Green, freshman De Ron Davis and junior Freddie McSwain, Jr., all played in their first game with the Hoosiers. Indiana has now won 24 regular season games against ranked opponents, the highest total in the Big Ten since and second most only behind Kansas. Indiana increases its lead in the all-time series against Kansas to 8-6. The 103 points scored makes it three out of the last four years that Indiana has scored 100 or more points in the season opener (100 vs. Chicago State in 2013; 116 vs. Mississippi Valley State in 2014). Indiana connected on 15 3-point field goals in the game, the eighth time under Tom Crean that the Hoosiers have made at least 15 in a game. The 15 3-pointers made by the Hoosiers are the most that Kansas has allowed in a non-conference game since at least (courtesy STATS, INC.). IU held Kansas to just 2-for-9 shooting in the overtime period. Indiana shot 50.0 percent (14-for-28) from the field in the second half, including 7-for-12 from long distance. When you add in the 2-for-3 effort in overtime, the Hoosiers were 9-for-15 over the final 25 minutes. The game featured 16 ties and 17 lead changes. Kansas largest lead was nine points early in the second half while the Hoosiers largest lead was five points with 3:45 left in regulation. The 31 fouls against the Hoosiers was tied for the most called against Indiana in the Tom Crean Era and was just the third time since that three Hoosiers had fouled out in a game. Player Plaudits Blackmon, Jr., returned from knee surgery which cost him the final 22 games of the season last year and scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half and overtime to lead the No. 11/12 Hoosiers to a win over the No. 2/3 Kansas Jayhawks in the Armed Forces Classic. His three pointer with 2:30 gave the Hoosiers the lead for good in the overtime period. In the second half and overtime, he was 6-for-12 from the field, 4-for-7 from 3-point range and 6-for-6 from the line. He also had six rebounds. It s the 14th game of his career scoring at least 20 points. He went 4-of- 8 from the 3-point line and 6-for-7 at the free throw line while also grabbing six rebounds. He now has 750 points in 47 career games played. Jones came off the bench and scored 15 points in 16 minutes, including seven points in overtime to lead the Hoosiers to the win over the Jayhawks in Honolulu. He scored five points in a one minute span in the first half to give IU its first lead in the game with a 3-pointer and a driving layup. In the overtime, he hit a 3-pointer with 1:45 to go to extend the lead to for the Hoosiers. With IU up by two with 16 seconds to play, Jones knocked in two free throws and with Kansas pressing down two with five seconds to play, Jones took the inbounds after breaking away from the press and sealed the victory with a slam dunk. Bryant recorded his third career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He kept the Hoosiers in the game in the first half with 16 points, including a career-best two 3-point field goals. Other Hoosiers who have had double-doubles on opening night in the Crean Era include Tom Pritchard vs. Northwestern State in , Christian Watford vs. Howard, , Cody Zeller vs. Stony Brook, , Watford and Zeller vs. Bryant, and Noah Vonleh vs. Chicago State, Anunoby did a little bit of everything, totaling 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots (ties career high).
