Longtime Lady Vol assistant Mickie DeMoss is now leading the Wildcats. IN OUR LAST GAME In the 38th meeting between the Associated Press number one and number two teams, the #2 Tennessee Lady Vols came away victorious with a triumph over top-ranked Duke before a raucous sell-out crowd of 9,314 at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Jan. 24, Early in the contest, both teams battled hard as Duke edged out to a slight lead, 13-8, at the second media timeout. Down by only five, the Big Orange battled back and evened the score at 16 following a Shyra Ely layup with 6:02 remaining in the first half. With the game knotted at 22 apiece and just a little more than two minutes left in the opening stanza, the Blue Devils closed with a 4-0 run to take a lead at the break. In the first half, the Lady Vols shot just 26 percent (10-38) from the field, failed to attempt a free throw and were out-rebounded, Additionally, no player in orange had more than four points. Despite the poor first half stats, Pat Summitt s squad came out of the locker room refocused and took its first lead of the game, 31-30, following a pair of free throws from Ely at the 16:11 mark. UT would go up by as many as five before Duke rallied to retake the lead, 45-44, with 9:19 left in regulation. Moments later, junior Loree Moore swiped her second steal of the game and raced towards the basket for a layup, but was fouled hard by Duke s All-American Alana Beard. Moore was unable to take the free throws and was forced to the bench. It was later learned that the starting point guard suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee and will miss the remainder of the season. Unaware of the extent of the injury and able to get up and down the floor reasonably well, Moore returned to the game and hit a decisive 3-pointer to put the Lady Vols up by nine, 60-51, with less than four minutes remaining. The Blue Devils managed to cut the margin to just two with 24 seconds left, but UT connected on its last seven free throws to hold on for the three-point victory. Tennessee was led by Ely and sophomore Shanna Zolman, who each scored 15 points. Moore also posted a double-digit total with 11 points. Junior Brittany Jackson just missed double figures with nine points and snared a career-high seven rebounds. On the night, the Lady Vols shot 38.7 percent (24-62) from the floor (58.3 percent in the second half) and held Duke to just 35.8 percent (24-67) shooting. The battle of the boards was even, with both team claiming 43 rebounds. TENNESSEE LADY VOLS NCAA CHAMPIONS

ELY EARNS SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Lady Vol junior forward Shyra Ely was named the SEC Player of the Week, Jan , In Tennessee s games last week, she led the Lady Vols in scoring and rebounding in a key SEC win over Vanderbilt at home and the upset victory over top-ranked Duke in a very lively and hostile gym in Durham, N.C. Her field goal efficiency versus Vanderbilt ( ) is one of the best of her career. The 22-points she scored against the Commodores is a season-high. Nailed 7-8 critical charity tosses including 5-6 at Duke. Added three assists and three steals to go along with 18.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg for the week. She tallied double-figures scoring for the 12 th time this season while leading the Lady Vols in the scoring department for the eighth time and on the boards for the 11 th time during the campaign. AND NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS LOREE MOORE Tennessee Lady Vol junior guard Loree Moore, who suffered an injury to her left knee with 8:42 left in Tennessee's upset victory over top-ranked Duke on Jan. 24, heard the three letters athletes detest, A-C-L. Further diagnostic testing on Jan., 26 revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament of left knee, according to University of Tennessee team orthopaedist Dr. William T. Youmans. Moore will be lost for the remainder of the season. We were cautiously optimistic but realized at the same time what the extent of the injury might be, said Lady Vol head coach Pat Summitt. I really feel bad for Loree. She has been a great leader for this team and has some big shoes to fill at the point guard position. No doubt, though, losing Loree is a tough and unfortunate break for our team, said Summitt of her newly number one-ranked Lady Volunteer squad. One of three players to start all 17 games for the Lady Vols this season, Moore averaged 7.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 2.8 apg while logging 27.7 minutes per contest. Moore, UT's starting point guard, was fouled by Duke All-American Alana Beard on a breakaway lay-up following a steal with 8:42 to play and Tennessee trailing The Lakewood, Calif., native had to be helped to the bench while fellow junior Shyra Ely sank both of Moore's free throws following the injury to give the Lady Vols a lead. After being evaluated by Tennessee head athletic trainer Jenny Moshak, Moore did return to the floor a few minutes later and sank a key three-pointer with 4:11 showing to give UT a lead. However, she returned to the bench shortly thereafter and watched the #2-ranked Lady Vols upset the #1-ranked Duke Blue Devils, No surgery date is set as of yet. Moore will begin pre-surgery rehabilitation immediately. TENNESSEE LADY VOLS NCAA CHAMPIONS

Summitt s teams from fast-tracked the coach with the quickest 100 wins in her career, three years and two days. She was the fastest women s coach to reach 600 wins just 734 games. December 5, 1999 Pat Summitt reaches the magical 700-win plateau at the University of Wisconsin s with an conquest of the Badgers. She joined Texas Jody Conradt as the only women to notch the milestone. Her ascent to 700 wins was also the fastest in women s collegiate basketball. The last set of 100 wins was knocked out in three years and 12 days along with three more NCAA titles. January 12, 2003 Pat Summitt is within reach of 800 wins as her Lady Vols come from behind (by 14 points) to defeat Auburn, 81-72, in the SEC opener in Thompson-Boling Arena for win #799. Summitt joined an elite group of three other NCAA Division I coaches who previously achieved the 800 milestone Dean Smith (North Carolina) 879, 2. Adolph Rupp (Kentucky) 876, 3. Jim Phelan (Mt. St. Mary s) 830. What is so amazing is that Summitt achieved 800 victories in just 29 seasons while Smith finished with 879 wins in 36 seasons, Rupp with 876 victories in 41 seasons and Phelan with 830 w s having concluded his 49 th season. Additionally, 47% of the 1,001 total games coached by Summitt have been contested against ranked teams. WOW! JODY JOINED THE 800 CLUB BOBBY DID TOO Almost a week to the day that Tennessee coach Pat Summitt became the first women s coach to reach 800 wins, she was joined by Texas coach Jody Conradt who claimed her 800 th win an upset victory over #7 Texas Tech, 69-58, in Austin, Texas. What s amazing is how quickly Summitt closed the gap on Conradt who had 680 wins on Dec. 21, 1996, while Summitt had 604 trailing the Texas coach by 76 victories. After UT s undefeated 39-0 season in , Summitt closed the gap to 44 games. In , Summitt had narrowed the victory gap to just two games 781 (Conradt) and 779 (Summitt) on Feb. 12, 2002, when Texas upset Tennessee in Knoxville. Both coaches sported 788 wins to start the season. Presently, Summitt (837) is ahead of her longtime coaching rival from Texas (834) as of games thru Jan. 27, Coach Bob Knight of Texas Tech entered the 800 Club on his second try as his Red Raiders defeated Nebraska (75-49) on Wed., Feb. 5, With Knight s inclusion, three coaches entered the 800 wins club in a 22-day span. What s so amazing is that the 800 Victory Club had just four members entering the season and their ranks doubled to eight coaches in just one year. Summitt, Conradt and Knight joined the ranks from the NCAA Division I ranks while Jerry Johnson of LeMoyne-Owen (NCAA D-II) was first in the 800 Club last season winning number 800 on Nov. 22, 2002 with a win over Christian Brothers College in front of 987 fans at home. The win was UT s 22nd in a row over the Wildcats, 17th in a row during the season and improved the Lady Vols record to UK fell to overall and 4-10 in conference play. Gwen Jackson led UT in scoring with 25 points as three Lady Vols reached double-figures. Shyra Ely posted a career-high 17 rebounds to go along with a season-high 18 tallies and Kara Lawson posted 16 points and six boards. On the afternoon, UT shot 54.7%, dominated the rebounding war and continued its recent surge in free throw shooting percentage by hitting 21 of 24 charity tosses to make the total 44 of 48 over the last two games. The game itself saw UT take control early as buckets by Ely and Gwen Jackson and a trey by Kara Lawson boosted UT to an early 7-2 advantage. The Lady Vol lead continued to grow, reaching as much as 11 points at 19-8 following a Gwen Jackson putback, before the Wildcats began chipping away at the deficit. After UK got to within six points at 19-13, a Shanna Zolman jumper boosted the UT lead back to eight tallies. However, with 6:50 remaining in the first half, Kentucky went on an 8-0 run to tie the score behind the efforts of Rita Adams and SeSe Helm, who together scored 43 points for UK on the afternoon. Lawson answered for UT with a big three-pointer, Ely had a steal and lay-in, Gwen Jackson posted a lay-up and Loree Moore hit two buckets as an 11-0 UT spurt gave the Lady Vols a lead with 1:06 to play. Adams closed the half for UK with a free throw as the teams went to the locker room with UT holding a tenuous eight-point advantage. The story for Tennessee, not just in the first half but for the game, was turnovers, as the Lady Vols suffered 14 first half miscues and 23 total on the afternoon. A 12-5 Tennessee run coming out of the break boosted UT to a lead with 16:17 to play, but the Orange and White couldn t shake off determined Kentucky as the Wildcats once again cut the UT lead to only eight at behind Helm, Adams and Danyelle Payne. With 6:28 to go, UK trailed only after five straight Adams points, but Ely and Gwen Jackson had already taken over for UT. The pair combined to score 19 of 21 points for UT down the stretch as the lead grew back to double-digits at with 2:18 remaining. Eight straight free throws over the final 56 seconds enabled UT to put the game out of reach as Tennessee hung on for a hard-fought victory and ensured its third perfect 14-0 mark in conference play in the last six seasons. Currently, UT has been ranked in 331 consecutive polls and since the season and the Lady Vols have been in the top 10 for all but one poll. UT is the only team to have been ranked every year for the last 28 years of the poll. UT has appeared at least once per season over the poll's history. PECK S THE ONLY ONE The roll call goes like this: Sylvia Hatchell, Sharon Fanning, Jane Albright, Lea Henry, Nancy Darsch, Trish Roberts, etc., etc. Tennessee coach Pat Summitt has faced many former players and assistant coaches in a variety of games thru the years but Carolyn Peck is the only one to record a victory over her former boss. While at Purdue, Peck handed Summitt a loss on Nov.15, 1998 in the State Farm Tip Off Classic in West Lafayette, Ind. The defeat snapped UT s 46-game consecutive winning streak (that was second only to Louisiana Tech s all-time 54-game winning streak). Tonight, Mickie DeMoss hopes to join Peck on the short-list of former players or staffers who have defeated their mentor. JUST A HINT OF ORANGE The Kentucky blue seems to sport a hint of orange this season with new head coach Mickie DeMoss making the jump from Tennessee. DeMoss prowled the Tennessee sidelines from and was instrumental in the Lady Vols six NCAA titles during her tenure. Also on the DeMoss staff, with connections to Big Orange Country, are former Lady Vol guard Niya Butts ( ) and graduate assistant Matthew Mitchell ( ). CAREER STATS VS. KENTUCKY Returning Lady Vol career statistics versus Kentucky can be found on p. 73 in the Tennessee media guide. Junior Shyra Ely leads the team with 14.0 ppg ppg while Shanna Zolman tosses in 9.0 ppg. Best on the boards versus the Wildcats is Ely with 12.0 rpg.. Following the game with topranked Duke, the senior class has compiled a record against ranked teams winning 81% of the time. Overall, this senior class is in all games (.885) for their Tennessee tenure to date. UT S LAST LOSS TO AN UNRANKED TEAM? When is the last time Tennessee lost to an unranked team? That would have been to LSU on Mar. 2, 2002 at the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. LSU had been in and out of the Top 25 polls in late January and February. Prior to that, UT s last loss to an unranked team was five years previous (to the day) losing to Auburn on Mar. 2, 1997 at the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. TENNESSEE LADY VOLS NCAA CHAMPIONS

FREE THROW A GO-GO Sophomore Shanna Zolman has seen very few free throws she doesn t like. In fact, she leads the nation in free throw accuracy connecting at a 94 percent clip. Zolman has missed just three this season (5-7 at #5 Stanford) and (1-2 vs. Vandy in Knoxville) and is for.940. Zolman had connected on 22 consecutive charity tosses before missing against Vanderbilt on Jan. 22, Tennessee s all-time leader in consecutive free throws was Tiffany Woosley who hit 45 consecutive thru CONSECUTIVE SEC HOME WINS With the victory over Vanderbilt on , the Lady Vols have now won 50 consecutive SEC home games. 8 218 WINS IN OUR LAST 237 GAMES The Lady Vols have won an amazing 218 games in their last 237 basketball contests (.919) spanning seven seasons (starting with NCAA Tournament play in 1997). UT was 6-0 in the 1997 NCAA Tourney, ran the table with a 39-0 record in , turned in a 31-3 worksheet in , a 33-4 mark in , a 31-3 overall record in , 29-5 in , 33-5 in and 16-1 in LADY VOLS HAVE DEALT FIRST LOSSES This season the Lady Vols have handed five teams their first defeat of the campaign: UT-C, La Tech, Stanford, DePaul and Oklahoma. WON YA OVER In the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls the weeks of Dec. 15 and Dec. 22 and Jan. 19, the Lady Vols snagged some first place votes away from top-ranked Connecticut and Duke. UT grabbed as many as two first place votes in the AP poll and one in the ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches poll before earning the #1 ranking the week of Jan. 26th. A-ROB ROCKS Lady Vol senior pivot Ashley Robinson has already recorded 40 blocked shots in 17 games. The 6 5 center rejected a school-record eight shots versus Rutgers to move past Tamika Catchings (140 blocks) into third place on the career blocked shot list. Robinson has 170 career blocks to date. UNTIL RECENTLY, IT HAD BEEN AWHILE Before the Dec. 14, 2003 over time versus Stanford and the Dec. 17, 2003 OT versus DePaul, the Lady Vols had not been involved in an extra stanza game since the Jan. 4, 2003, overtime contest with Connecticut. Prior to that, the last time Tennessee was involved in an extra stanza game was during the season when the Lady Vols played a record four overtime affairs. IN OVERTIME The Lady Vols are all-time in overtime games. The most OT games in a season was , when the Lady Vols were 3-1 in overtime contests losing to Georgia, 94-93, and defeating Texas, 68-65, Vanderbilt, and LSU, Tennessee's 21 points in the extra stanza against Vanderbilt on Jan.19, 1997, was the most ever scored by the Lady Vols in a single overtime. HOW MANY TIMES HAS TENNESSEE GIVEN UP OVER 80 POINTS??? Fortunately, not too often. DePaul s 89 points tallied on Dec. 17, 2003, was the highest point total scored on the Tennessee Lady Vols since Mar. 1, UT and LSU were in a basket-for-basket shoot-out in the SEC Tournament semifinals as the Lady Vols won in overtime. Since 1999, the Lady Vols have been tagged for 80+ points by the opposition on just eight occasions (including DePaul). Connecticut leads the scoring fest with four games in the 80s, while DePaul, LSU, Florida and Xavier have turned in one 80+ game each. In these games, UT was 4-4 when the opposition scored 80+ points. Points Opponent Date UT W/L SCORE 89 DePaul W Connecticut W Connecticut L LSU L Connecticut L Connecticut W Xavier L Florida W 92-80) AWH, UCONN, A TIE IS LIKE KISSING YA SISTA And in this case, your sister is Tennessee. Tennessee and Connecticut have found yet another way to be linked in NCAA women s basketball history as the Huskies fell short of breaking the Lady Vols 69-game NCAA homecourt winning streak against Duke on Jan. 3, The Dukies roared back to take a win with a buzzer-beater trey. So, Tennessee and Connecticut are co-holders of the NCAA Women s longest homecourt winning streak at 69-games. DID YOU KNOW UConn s previously longest home win streak was 54 and ended with a loss against Tennessee on Jan. 10, 1999, in Gampel. The Huskies 69-game winning streak at home (both Gampel and Civic Center) dated back to a loss versus Tennessee on Feb.2, Tennessee is 2-1 at Gampel but has never won in the Hartford Civic Center Here s a few of our streaky facts: The record spanned from Feb. 1, 1991 until Jan. 2, 1996 UT s streak was snapped by, guess who?????????? Connecticut on Jan. 6, 1996, in front of 10,584 brave Lady Vols fans who made the trek despite a freak snow-ice storm in Knoxville that day, 40% of the 69 games were contested against ranked opponents a dozen wins came over teams ranked in the Top Lady Vol players participated in the 69-game homecourt winning streak Former Lady Vol All-American Dana Johnson, a 6-2 center from Baltimore, MD played in 57 of the 69 games in the streak, Olympian and All-American Nikki McCray, a 5-11 guard from Collierville, TN, recorded 35 double-doubles during the 69-game streak. SEC PLAY 2004 This season, the Lady Vols will play home-and-home games with Arkansas and South Carolina and traditional rival, Vanderbilt. Last season, the Lady Vols played home-and-home games with Auburn from the West and Florida from the Eastern Division of the SEC. HERE S STOP AND GO FOR YA During the TCU game on Jan. 2, 2004, the clock stopped 117 times during the course of the game. Talk about carpel tunnel syndrome. When all the media timeouts (8), team timeouts (9), fouls (42), turnovers (45), jump balls (13) and trips to the free throw line were figured in the count came back at 117 times for the stoppage of the clock. The old record for the Lady Vols was set last season when the clock stopped 93 times in the Arkansas game. I know it doesn t mean much, but have you ever stopped to think about it?? HOME, SWEET, HOME The Lady Vols rarely lose at home. In fact, since moving to the Thompson-Boling Arena for the season, UT has lost two games in one season just four times. UT lost two games in TBA during the inaugural campaign, in , , and the season. The 12 all-time losses at Thompson-Boling Arena have come at the hands of just six teams: Connecticut (2002, 2000, 1996), Louisiana Tech (1999, 1989), Georgia (1996, 1991), Texas (2003, 2002, 1987), Stanford (1996) and Auburn (1988).
