Following that game, the Cowboys will travel to the east coast for an ESPNU televised game at nationally ranked North Carolina. After breaking for Christmas, Mc- Neese will open Southland Conference play at Northwestern State (Jan. 3) and at Stephen F. Austin (Jan. 5) before returning home on Jan. 7 against Nicholls State. McFe r r i n d e b u t s a m e m o r a b l e o n e - Sophomore forward Craig McFerrin hasn t seen game action since January of last season, that s when he was lost for the remainder of the year after a shoulder injury on Jan. 29 in a game against Central Arkansas. McFerrin, who missed the season s first seven games due to academics, made his debut in Wednesday s win over Louisiana Tech in career fashion. He entered the game with 16:18 to play in the first half and the Cowboys trailing He quickly made his presence known with six straight points to spark a 12-2 run by the Cowboys as he was en route to a career-high 14 points for the game. Gu i d r y g o e s d o u b l e t i m e - Sophomore forward Desharick Guidry recorded his fifth consecutive double-double in Wednesday s win over Louisiana Tech after he scored 18 points with 11 rebounds. He now has six career double-doubles and is the first Cowboy to get five straight since Kevin Ross in the season. The school record is eight consecutive double-doubles set by David Lawrence in the season. Ha r d y a n a l l-a r o u n d g o-t o g u y - Sophomore guard Kevin Hardy can do it all for the Cowboys. Through the first 8 games, he s led the team in scoring once, has grabbed double-digit rebounds once, led the team in assists four games, team leader in blocked shots twice and in steals four times. Fr e s h m a n Le w i s a s w a t m a c h i n g - True freshman forward Austin Lewis is making his presence known in the paint. The 6-8 Houston native leads the team and ranks tied for 3rd in the league with 1.7 blocks per game. He has 12 on the season and has swatted away multiple shots in each of the last four games and five on the season. He played just five minutes against Louisiana Tech due to an injured ankle, but still managed two blocked shots. Back-2-back postseason first time ever - When McNeese was selected to play in the CollegeInsider.com basketball tournament last year, it marked the second consecutive season that the Cowboys have been tabbed to play in a postseason national tournament. Two years ago, the Cowboys played in the NIT and hosted Boston College in the first round. In its history, McNeese has appeared in 2 NCAA tournaments (0-2), 3 NIT (1-3) and 1 CBI (0-1). Alawoya have been selected in the 2012 NBA Development Draft with both players going in the seventh round Richard to the Iowa Energy as the ninth pick in the round and Alawoya the 15th pick to the Austin Toros. Richard wrapped up his McNeese career last season and was named the Southland Conference s Player of the Year after averaging 17.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest. He led the Cowboys to a second consecutive conference tournament final appearance and a national postseason tournament for the second straight year. Richard, a native of Carencro, finished up his career with 1,625 points 12th best on the McNeese all-time career scoring list. He became just the seventh Cowboy basketball player in school history to earn an all-american honor after he was named an Associated Press All-American honorable mention. He was also named the Louisiana Player of the Year. Alawoya was a member of the Southland Conference championship team that finished the season with a record and an appearance in the NIT where it hosted Boston College in the first round. The Houston native earned first team all-conference honors as a senior when he led the team with 10.3 rebounds to go along with a 10.2 scoring average. He was the only player in the Southland that season to average double figures in both scoring and rebounding. He ended his career with 840 total rebounds which places him sixth on the McNeese all-time career rebounding list. The Iowa Energy is a developmental team for the New Orleans Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets and Washington Wizards while the Toros are associated with the San Antonio Spurs. Co w b o y s p i c k e d 3r d, 4t h in p r e s e a s o n polls - A year after posting a record and making its second consecutive appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament championship game, the McNeese State Cowboys have been tabbed for a third place finish by the league sports information directors and fourth by the coaches in the conference preseason polls. Oral Roberts, which joined the Southland from Summit League in July, has been chosen to win the

The Golden Eagles, who finished 27-7 last season, picked up seven firstplace votes from the coaches and six from the SIDs. Stephen F. Austin was selected second in both polls, garnering the remaining three first-place votes from the coaches and four from the SIDs. The Lumberjacks finished second in the West Division of the Southland last season with a overall mark and a 12-4 conference record, which earned them the second seed in the league tournament. Northwestern State was picked third by the coaches followed by McNeese State and Lamar, respectively. In the SID poll, Lamar and McNeese State were slated in a tie for third followed by Northwestern State. In the coaches poll, Southeastern Louisiana was picked sixth followed by Sam Houston State seventh. Nicholls State and Central Arkansas tied for the eighth spot and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rounded out the poll. According to the SIDs, the Bearkats were selected sixth, the Lions seventh and the Colonels eighth. Concluding the poll were the Bears and Islanders in ninth and 10th, respectively. With 10 Southland teams this year, the league will not play in divisions for the first time since the season. The top eight teams based on conference winning percentage earn berths to the 2013 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament March 13-16, at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. Cannon helped McNeese State reach its second consecutive postseason trip after it played in the championship game of the conference tournament each of the last two years. The senior from Alexandria was second on the team, behind conference player of the year Patrick Richard, with 11.5 points. He added 4.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 33 games. That kind of production led to the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches to award Simmons the Tommy Joe Eagles Memorial Award as the state s major college coach of the year two years straight. In the season, Simmons guided the Cowboys to their first Southland Conference regular season championship since the season, and led the team into the National Invitational Tournament where it hosted Boston College, and last season, he led the Pokes to their second straight conference tournament title game appearance and later took part in the CollegeInsider. com tournament. McNeese did make back-to-back postseason appearances in (NIT) and (NCAA) but that was under two different head coaches (Ron Everhart and Tic Price). The 20-win season Simmons Cowboys produce in was also the first for the school in nine years and the 15-2 home record was one of the very best. McNeese knocked on the 20-win door once again last year where the 17-win season saw four games where the Cowboys came up short by four points or less. Now, Simmons enters this season with the goal of not only making the conference tournament title game for the third consecutive season, but winning it for the first time since that season. Simmons has hit some high spots during his career at McNeese, both as head coach and assistant coach. As a former assistant at McNeese (in the late 1980s on the staff of Steve Welch), the Cowboys won the league s tournament title and participated in the NCAA. He earned the SLC coach of the year honor as well as that for the state of Louisiana in 2011 and was also named the district coach of the year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He s now in six seasons with the Cowboys and is in eight season overall. Simmons was also on the staffs at Northwestern State and Louisiana Tech when those two teams won league titles and played in the NCAA tournament and an assistant at Delta State when it played post season. He was an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech when the team went to the NIT Final Four and made two NCAA appearances. He was an assistant at Delta State when it won 24 games and appeared in the Division II Final Four and he was an assistant at Northwestern State when the Demons won back-to-back league crowns, participated in the NCAA and gave the SLC a first round NCAA victory for the first time since the 1980s. During a 28-year career Simmons has coached more than 20 players who have gone on to play in the professional ranks including Karl Malone. He is a member of the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame, having been inducted for his playing career at Louisiana Tech and he is one of the few current collegiate head coaches in the nation who scored more than 1,500 points during their playing careers. At Tech he was the team captain and team MVP and in 1981 ranked fifth in the nation in free throw shooting. He still holds the school record for free throw accuracy in a single season and for career free throw accuracy. A native of DeRidder, he and his wife Elaine Marie have three children, Desmond, David and Deon.
