5 Comets (2001) and the Miami Sol (2002). The newest Bruin coach also played professionally in Italy, Spain, Israel, Brazil and Puerto Rico. Pitts Rehab on Track for Return in Fall Forward Julia Pitts saw action on the UCLA track and field squad during the Spring of 2005 and started for the basketball team on its 2005 summer tour of Australia. Pitts suffered a torn meniscus cartilage in her left knee last season and had surgery on Feb. 12, She played in 18 games in and started nine times. She is expected to be at full speed for the opening of 2005 pre-season practice. Quoting Coach Olivier on the Bruin Team This year's team will have plenty of experience, including five returning starters, and improved overall depth, said coach Olivier. I was proud of the way our starters stepped up in the absence of Noelle (Quinn) down the stretch last season. Noelle's return, along with the return of Julia Pitts and the addition of our three new freshmen, will provide answers to a lot the question marks that were on last year's team coming down the stretch. We have seen glimpses of what this group is capable of when healthy, and it is exciting to head into the new season knowing this can be a special season. Once again we are playing a high-quality pre-season schedule with games at Baylor, at Oklahoma, at UC Santa Barbara and against Georgia. Overall, the schedule could include as many as 16 games against teams which played in the post-season, including the opener against the defending national champions (Baylor) in Waco. There is no better way to help prepare for what I see as one of the most competitive Pac-10 races in years." Season Bests #00 Ortal Oren Minutes: 25 v. Stanford, 2/20/05 Pts.: 9 v. 6 KATHY OLIVIER HEAD COACH 13TH YEAR (20TH OVERALL AT UCLA) UNLV ( 82) CAREER HIGHLIGHTS Only conference coach to have three first-team All-Pac-10 Conference performers as freshmen Led UCLA to its first-ever Pac-10 Championship in team set school home average attendance record Guided UCLA to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances ( ) for the first time in school history 1999 NCAA Elite Eight Produced three Pac-10 Freshmen of the Year in Noelle Quinn (2004), Maylana Martin (1997) and Erica Gomez (1996) Produced two Pac-10 Players of the Year in Maylana Martin (1999) and Natalie Williams (1994) Bruins have had seven Pac-10 scoring leaders and five rebounding champs with Olivier on the staff Only the second UCLA coach to earn 100 career victories with a win over San Diego State in 1999 Set to begin her 13th season as UCLA head coach, Kathy Olivier has energized the program. The former standout player at Cal State Fullerton and UNLV has produced two Pac-10 Players of the Year, three Pac- 10 Freshman Players of the Year and a Pac-10 team championship. She is the only current Pac-10 coach to have as many as three freshmen named first-team All-Conference performers. From , she guided UCLA to a school-best three straight NCAA tournament appearances. Interest in UCLA women's basketball has taken off to new levels under Olivier. The only six regular season crowds in Bruin history of over 7,000 fans have come out to support UCLA during her tenure. In fact, the top 13 regular season crowds in school history have come with Olivier at the helm. Recognized as an excellent recruiter, she has steadily built the program to reflect her own positive, upbeat and outgoing personality. Olivier has posted a overall mark which includes five top-four Pac-10 finishes in the last eight years. Her teams may favor a running game on offense, but defense is another Olivier strong point. Six of the all-time school top 10 marks for lowest opponent field goal percentages belong to Olivier-coached squads. In 2005, Nikki Blue earned first-team All- Pac-10 honors for the third straight year and was joined on the first team by Lisa Willis. However, the Bruins lost leading scorer and rebounder Noelle Quinn to a knee injury with 12 games to play and finished sixth in the conference. Quinn earned honorable mention all-conference honors, and Lindsey Pluimer was named to the all-conference freshman team. The team set a school record for free throw shooting percentage and allowed opponents the fourth-lowest shooting percentage in school history. In 2004, Olivier led the Bruins to a thirdplace conference finish and into the NCAA tournament. The team boasted the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year in Quinn and a pair of all-conference performers in Blue and Quinn. The Bruin team surrendered just 63.8 points per game, the third-lowest in school history. Olivier led the 2003 Bruins to 12 conference wins, a total surpassed by only two other seasons in UCLA history. By winning 18 games overall, Olivier guided the Bruins to a nine-game improvement over the previous season. Blue became the seventh freshman player in conference history to be named first-team all-league. In 2002, Olivier guided a Bruin team which lost its top two returning scorers during the season to nine wins and a first round Pac- 10 tournament victory. In 2001, she guided a team, which was playing without eight of its top nine scorers from the previous season, to a winning home record in Pac-10 play and wins over three nationally-ranked teams. In 2000, she saw her team reach the NCAA tournament for a school record thirdstraight season. The squad also set a Bruin home attendance record by averaging over 3,700 fans. Under Olivier's guidance, Maylana Martin became just the third player in conference history to ever earn first-team All-Pac-10 honors in four-straight seasons. In 1999, she led her Bruin team to the school s first-ever Pac-10 Conference title and to a best-ever Elite Eight finish in the NCAA Tournament. The team totaled the most wins (26) since the 1981 season and advanced further in the NCAA tournament (Regional final) than any previous UCLA team. The team put together back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since the 1970 s. In addition, the 1999 Bruin team finished with its highest ranking ever (No. 7) in the USA Today poll. Additionally, Martin was named Pac-10 Player of the Year, and she, Erica Gomez and LaCresha Flannigan each earned first-team all-conference honors. In 1998, she guided UCLA to what was then its best finish ever (tie for second) in the Pac-10, its best winning percentage in the last 17 seasons and the first 20-win season since In Olivier's first season as head coach in , Natalie Williams earned Pac-10 Player of the Year honors. Olivier originally joined the UCLA staff in the summer of 1986 as an assistant coach. Olivier began her coaching career at UNLV as a graduate assistant in Following one season at UC Irvine ( ), she was hired at USC and was on the Trojan staff for three years ( through ) as an assistant. USC, led by sophomore Cheryl Miller, won the NCAA title in Olivier s first year (1984) and reached the championship game in her third season (1986). The former Kathy Ricks, Olivier was a standout player at Cal State Fullerton and then at UNLV. As a freshman ( ) at CSUF, she averaged 15.6 points and 9.2 rebounds and raised her scoring average to 19.3 as a sophomore. As a junior ( ) at UNLV, she earned All-America honors while averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds.
