The 15th-ranked Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks used an explosive offensive attack and a stifling defense to hand Millersville its worst defeat in 50 years Saturday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium. The Crimson Hawks (2-0), which downed C.W. Post 41-0 in week one, continued its impressive early season start with Saturday s 63-3 win. It was the most points scored against the Marauders since West Chester totaled 63 in 1968 and its widest margin of defeat since West Chester won 68-0 in The offense rolled up 618 yards of offense including 293 on the ground and 325 through the air, while Millersville (0-3) was limited to 135 yards of total offense. The Marauders did, however, continue its string 13-straight games with at least 100 yards rushing, totaling 102 on 35 carries. Indiana s balanced offensive attack was led by running backs Justin Warren and Tobias Robinson. Warren led the team with 134 yards on nine carries, including one touchdown run of 89 yards which capped a nine second drive at the end of the third quarter. It was the third play of more than 80 yards from the offense this season. In the second quarter alone, the Crimson Hawks posted 28 points, three of the scores coming off runs of 18, five and seven yards by Robinson, who finished the game with 104 yards on 22 lugs. Quarterback Andrew Krewatch was equally impressive, connecting on 24-of-27 passes for 317 yards, three touchdowns and just one pick. For Millersville, sophomore tailback Cardoza Jacks turned in his best performance since Sept. 29, 2007 as he totaled 48 yards on the ground. Freshman Matthew Booker chipped in 45 yards on 11 totes. The Millersville special teams continued its solid play as well. Kicker John Banzhof improved to 3-of-4 on the season with a 35-yarder in the fourth. Those three points were the first scored on the Indiana defense this season. He also landed three of his seven punts inside the 20 and hit a long of 54. In the last two games, he has put eight punts inside the 20-yard line and has averaged 41.3 yards per punt. It was the Millersville special teams that caught off-guard early. On the opening kickoff, Derrick Bass took a handoff from freshman Matt Egenrieder and raced 45 yards to the 44 yards line. It was the longest return of his career. The Marauders used quarterback Jamal Smith s feet and arm--two rushes for eight yards and two complete passes to Derek Fry--to move the ball to the 12. But on the next play, Smith was forced to scramble and Andre Henderson picked off Smith s pass, ending the Millersville scoring threat. Indiana quickly made the Marauders pay. Krewatch hit 4-of-4 passes on his first drive including an 11-yard touchdown strike, leading a seven-play, 80-yard drive to give Indiana the lead for good. Krewatch went on to complete his first 11 passes, and his first incompletion came early in the second when Jerrod Bowling recorded his first career interception in the endzone. But Millersville could not capitalize and rattled off 28 more points by halftime and poured on 21 more in the third. The Marauders lone points came on a Banzhof field goal with 25 seconds remaining. Millersville senior Matt Harmon finished with double-digit tackles for the second-straight game, posting a career-high 12 and added 1.5 tackles for loss. Fry hauled in a team-best four catches for 34 yards. 63, Millersville 3 (Sept. 13, 2008 at Millersville, Pa.) Score by Quarters Score Indiana (Pa.) 5 pery Rock s picked up steam and pulled away late, handing the Marauders a defeat. Millersville (1-1) struck twice in the third quarter on a touchdown run by Brad Lantz and a Bill Shirk to Jamal Smith 39-yard TD toss, cutting Slippery Rock s (2-0) advantage to heading into the final period. In the final frame, though, the Marauders turned the ball over twice--once on an interception and once on downs--and managed just 37 yards of offense on 13 plays. Slippery Rock, meanwhile, racked up 127 yards of offense including 87 yards rushing and controlled the clock for over 10 of the final 15 minutes. The Rock finished the game with 434 yards of offense and outgained the Marauders on the ground. The running game was sparked by SayQuan Scott-Mitchell, who piled up 205 yards and a 7.3 yards per carry average. Smith made a career-high seven catches and totaled 112 yards. Egenrieder and Brown each hauled in four passes. Lantz totaled 57 yards on 13 carries. MOVING ON UP Senior running back Brad Lantz is back from injury and has an opportunity to leave his mark on the Millersville record books. The running back entered the 2009 season ranked 12th all-time in rushing yards with 1,951 yards. After 120 yards in the first two weeks, he has moved past John Flamish and Juan Jones for ninth. He now has 2,071 and is within striking distance of Troy Smith ( ) for eighth. Smith totaled 2,154 yards during his career. In his two healthy seasons at running back, Lantz averaged nearly 880 yards rushing per season. If he can match that total in 2009, he will have 2,831 yards and rank fourth all-time behind Marc DeBellis ( ). Also, Lantz already ranks third all-time in career carries with 502. He averaged 213 carries during his first two seasons, and totaled 30 carries in the first two weeks of this season. Another season with 213 carries would put him at 685 carries and in first place all-time ahead of the legendary Ricke Stonewall, who totaled 648 while racking up 4,169 yards from DOUBLE THE PRODUCTION With Brad Lantz injured last season, Cardoza Jacks emerged as the team s workhorse running back. Jacks totaled a team-best 765 yards in just five PAGE 5 starts and rattled off four 100-yard performances in the final five games. With Jacks and Lantz both healthy in 2009, the Marauders have two backs with over 1,000 career yards. While Lantz boasts 2,071 yards, Jacks, a junior, has 1,101 yards and a career average of 4.9 yards per carry. The two running backs combined for 151 yards rushing in the season opener. Jacks totaled 88 yards on just three rushes, and Lantz added 63 on 17 carries. Lantz has seven 100-yard rushing performances to his credit, and his career best is 152 (Nov. 10, 2007 vs. Kutztown). All four of Jacks 100-yard rushing games came in 2008, and his high is 274 yards. He also set a school record for carries with 44 against Cheyney on Oct. 11. Jacks has averaged just over 500 yards per season in his first two years. Staying on that pace would put him over 2,000 yards and into the top 10 on Millersville s career rushing list. Of the top 10 rushers in school history, there are three sets of teammates. Ricke Stonewall (1st), Bob Coyne (5th) and Troy Smith (8th) all played together from Scott Highley (2nd) and Ron Porter (6th) were teammates from , and Marc DeBellis (3rd) and Gerald Mack (7th) played on the same team in CAPTAIN SHIRK Bill Shirk has emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the PSAC since he took over in the fourth game of the 2008 season. He has started the 2009 season quickly, completing 33 of 62 passes for 399 yards and two touchdowns. He has also had two passes go for more than 37 yards. In the 10 games that Shirk has started, the squad produced 23 points, 18 first downs, 151 yards rushing and 208 yards passing per game. In the three games without him as the starter, the team averaged 16.3 points, 12 first downs, yards rushing and 73 yards passing per game. In just 10 starts, Shirk has six 200-yard passing efforts. He recorded his first of the 2009 season against Slippery Rock when he totaled 214 yards. Shirk finished 2008 with five 200-yard games. On Oct. 18 against C.W. Post, he became the first Millersville quarterback to throw for 300 yards in a game since Dan Csencsitz threw for 301 against Bloomsburg in Millersville played 40 games during that stretch without a 300-yard passer. Shirk also completed 29-of-45 passes for 290 yards and a touchdown against East Stroudsburg on Nov., It was the most pass attempts by a Marauder since 2004 when Csencsitz totaled 49 attempts against Bloomsburg. With 22 completions against Bloomsburg, he became the first Millersville quarterback since 2004 to complete at least 20 passes. The last Marauder QB to perform the feat was Csencsitz. Shirk s three passing TD s against Cheyney were the most by a Millersville QB since Dan Csencsitz threw four against Mansfield in MR. SMITH GOES TO WR Jamal Smith picked up right where he left off as a big-play threat for the Marauders. In the first two games of 2009, he has made a team-leading 11 catches for 160 yards and scored three touchdowns. Both of his touchdown receptions have been for more than 20 yards. All four of the receiving touchdowns in his career have gone for more than 20 yards. He also scored a rushing touchdown against Assumption. In addition to four receiving scores, he has six rushing and six passing touchdowns for 16 overall. Smith s seven catches in week two set a new career high. He has caught at least one pass in each of his 10 starts at the position. His 112-yard performance against Slippery Rock was the third 100-yard receiving game of his career and the first of the 2009 season. He also went over 100 yards on Sept. 20, 2008 against West Chester (131) and on Oct. 18 at C.W. Post (139). All three of his 100-yard games have come on the road. Through two games in 2009, Smith has established himself as one of the most productive wide receivers in the league. He is fifth in receptions per game, third in receiving yards per game, seventh in all-purpose yards and tied for third in scoring. Smith s 80-yard grab against West Chester in 2008 was the team s longest completion of the season and was the longest since Drew Folmar s 91-yard TD pass to Sean Scott in Both of his TD catches are two of the three longest pass completions of the season for Millersville. Only two receivers in school history have totaled 1,000 yards in a season. Sean Scott did it twice (1998 and 1999), and Mike McFetridge set the school record with 1,131 yards in TOTALING TACKLES Millersville s returning safety duo of Matt Sutjak and Julius Carter opened 2009 as they closed 2008 as the team s leading tacklers. Sutjak and Carter have led the team in tackles in each of the first

7 two games. The duo has combined for 40 stops this season. Both players have made at least eight tackles in both games and both set career highs against Slippery Rock. Carter totaled 14 tackles and Sutjak tallied 10. Through two weeks, Carter is tied for fourth in the PSAC with 11.0 tackles per game. Sutjak is tied for 10th with nine tackles per game. The pair totaled 73 and 70 tackles respectively in Both players ranked in the PSAC s top 25 in tackles per game. Carter, a three-year letterwinner, has totaled 154 career tackles. Carter totaled eight or more tackles in a game eight times in the last two years. Sutjak has tallied eight or more tackles seven times. SPECIAL SPECIAL TEAMS Millersville s special teams have been a key asset to the team so far this season and several players rank among the tops in the PSAC. Millersville ranks fourth in kickoff returns, averaging 25.6 per return. Individually, Lou Brown ranks third with a 25.6 average. His eight returns have gone for 205 yards (the most in the PSAC). He also has the second longest return in the league this year. His 42- yard return against Slippery Rock was the longest by a Marauder since Derrick Bass went for 45 yards on Sept. 13, John Banzhof has displayed one of the biggest legs in the conference this year. In the first two weeks, he has punted the ball 12 times for a leaguebest 43.4 average. He has also drilled four 50-yard punts, including three in week two against Slippery Rock. His best of the season was a 56-yard against Slippery Rock. He has also landed four punts inside the 20 without a touchback. Banzhof has landed 26 punts inside the 20 while totaling just five touchdbacks in the last two seasons. He has drilled seven punts longer than 50 yards and has a career long of 67. Banzhof is also perfect on six PAT s this season. He is one of only five kickers in the league to be perfect on as many attempts. DISTANCE RUNNER Cardoza Jacks 78-yard touchdown run against Assumption on Aug. 28 was the longest run by a Marauder since Brad Myers 80-yard TD scamper against Shippensburg in Including the 78-yard run at Assumption, Jacks has recorded two runs of more than 50 yards in the PAGE 7 last two seasons. He had a 54-yard run against Cheyney in He has three runs of more than 30 yards. THE SACK IS BACK Millersville totaled four sacks against Assumption and one more against Slippery Rock, giving them five on the season and more than half of the entire 2008 season total of seven. At Assumption, the Marauders recorded their first four-sack game since Nov. 3, 2007 against Bentley. Millersville has totaled four or more sacks in a game just three times since the start of the 2006 season. All four sacks came from different players. Jeff Longley, Zack Riley and Chad Miller each recorded their first career sacks. Owen King tallied a half-sack last year, giving him 1.5 for his career. Miller currently leads the team with two sacks. He entered the 2009 season without a sack in 22 career games but has had one in each of the first two games this year. SHIRK S TD STREAK Quarterback Bill Shirk is in the midst of an impressive streak. He has thrown at least one touchdown pass in each of his first 10 starts. In those nine starts, he has thrown 16 touchdown passes. Three times he has thrown two or more touchdown passes. Eight of his touchdown passes have gone for more than 30 yards as well. CATCHES FOR MATT Sophomore Matt Egenrieder has become one of Bill Shirk s top targets. Egenreider caught a team-high five passes in the season opener at Assumption and four more in week two at Slippery Rock, giving him 15 catches in his last three games dating back to the 2008 season finale at Edinboro. He has led the team in catches in two of the three games. He has also recorded at least one reception in six straight games dating back to last year. YOUTH WILL BE SERVED The Marauders have seven seniors on the roster, and only four of those players had experience starting on offense or defense before the season opener. At Assumption, five defensive players earned their first career starts. Shane Gross and Jeff Longley started at linebacker for the first time. Erik Murphy and Christian Rodriguez started at cornerback in their first collegiate game. Defensive end Zack Riley earned the start in his first collegiate game as well. The players may have been inexperienced, but they have been productive. Gross, Longley and redshirt freshman linebacker Jamie Thomas have combined for 36 tackles, two pass breakups, a sack and two forced fumbles. On the offensive side, left tackle Neil Moloney started as a true freshman, and Lou Brown got the start at wide receiver as a redshirt freshman. In addition to the seven first-time starters, 10 other players earned their first collegiate experience. The 2009 roster includes 35 true freshmen, 11 redshirt freshmen and 14 sophomores on the roster. That means that 51 percent of the roster had never competed in a collegiate game prior to the season opener against Assumption. DIFFICULT TO NAVIGATE Not only does Millersville s 2009 schedule start with three road games, it is dotted with outstanding teams. Three teams (West Chester, Bloomsburg and Edinboro) started the season ranked in the top 25 of the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll, and jumped into the rankings this week at No. 24. Of Millersville s 11 opponents, five have started 2-0 and four others have won one of their first two games. WELCOME ABOARD Greg Colby added four new coaches to his 2009 staff. Roland Weeden takes over as running backs coach after two years at Cheyney and three at Fairleigh Dickinson. Terry Owens will assist with the defensive backs after an outstanding career at Kutztown, and former Marauders Adam Cobb and Eric Updegrove will also work as assistants.
